Mabel Ara Updike, 88, the daughter of George Washington and Cora (Dodson) Goodman, was born Jan. 30, 1913, near Schell City and passed from this life on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Christian Health Care of Nevada. After graduating from Schell City High School in 1931, Mabel attended the State Teachers College in Warrensburg, then later graduated from the Pittsburg, KS, State Teachers College. On Jan. 22, 1939, Mabel was united in marriage to Cecil B. Updike. After their marriage, Cecil farmed and Mabel taught school, teaching for twenty-four years before retiring in 1977. She was a very dedicated teacher who loved all children. Mabel was converted at a young age and became a member of the Schell City Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant sisters, and her husband, Cecil, who passed away on March 15, 1998. Survivors include cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. Services were held on Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Schell City Christian Church with Pastor Marvin Jamison officiating. Musical selections were provided by Sharon Goodman and Julie Wilson. Pallbearers were Jim Goodman, Ervin Goodman, Sam Vantellman, Grady Davis, Harvey Gerster and Roger Prough. Interment was in the Green Lawn Cemetery, Schell City under the direction of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home, Schell City.

Lewis H. Urner, 85, Nevada, passed away on Tuesday morning, Oct. 30, 2007. at his home in Nevada following a brief illness. He was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Nevada, to Anthony Samuel Urner and Josie May McCain Urier. He married Mable L. Simmons on Dec. 5, 1981, in Nevada, and she survives of the home. Lewis was born and raised in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School. He attended Kansas State Teachers College, in Pittsburg, Kan. While there he was drafted in June 1942. He trained in Fort Berming, Ga., and Camp Rucker, Ala. While serving under General George Patton in the United States Army, he received four battle stars and two other medals. He served in France, Belgium, Luxemburg and Germany with the 3463nd Maintenance Ordinance Group. Lewis received his Doctorate in Education from the University of Missouri in Columbia. During his career, he was Dean at Moberly Junior College for eight years, Superintendent of Schools at Carl Junction for 21 years and Bronaugh for seven. years prior to his retirement. Following retirement from the field of education, Lewis enjoyed an antique collectible business. He and his wife Mable enjoyed traveling and playing cards with friends and neighbors. He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Masons, the American Legion and the United Methodist Church. Survivors in addition to his wife Mable include four children, George Timer and his wife Marilyn, San. Diego, Calif., Lewa timer, Joplin, Mo., Donna Gorman and her husband, Dorman, Jefferson City, Mo., and Tom Simmons and his wife, Jan, Lee's Summit, MO; three grandchildren, Kyle Gorman, Jefferson City, Mo., Chris Simmons and his wife, Kristy, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Robyn Simmons, Arlington Va.; two great.grandchildren, Cole Simmons and Chase Simmons, both of Lee's Summit, Mo. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Christine Mae Freshour Tinier; four brothers, Anthony, Charles, Jimmy Lee, and George Timer, and one sister, Josie May. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, at Ferry Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park. Nevada, with full military honors.

Butler, Bates County, MO - Mrs. Frankie Lee Utley who had made her home in Bates County for many years, died Wednesday morning, May 10 at her home northeast of Butler. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, May 12, at the Culver-Underwood chapel. (note: Frankie Nafus Utley was born Feb 6, 1870 in Bates County. She married Job Utley on 13 Mar 1892 at Pippinville, Bates Co., MO. She died May 10, 1961.)

Job Utley, pioneer resident of the Peru community, died at his home early Saturday morning. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. S. O. Thomas of the home, also two brothers, George Utley of Des Moines, IA, and Dave Utley of Butler, and one sister, Mrs. Rebecca Utley of Butler. Funeral services were held Sunday. (note: Jobe Utley was born July 6, 1866 in Illinois, the son of Benjamin Bradford UTLEY and Rebecca Stevens He died June 29, 1940.)

Leota M. "Billie" Hooper Utterback, 87, of Adrian, MO died Friday, March 26, 2010 at the Adrian Manor, Adrian. Graveside services will be held Thursday, April 1, 2010 at Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. Cremation. Billie was born January 4, 1923 in Ballard, MO to Alva and Nettie (Worden) Hooper. She later moved to Adrian where she graduated from High School in 1940. She attended Templemans Beauty School in Kansas City, MO and upon graduation was later employed at the Plaza Beauty Salon in Kansas City, MO. In 1944 she moved back to Adrian and worked at Goldie's Beauty Shop in Butler, MO. There she met Richard Utterback and after an eighteen month courtship, was married, and they were together 48 years before his death in June 1992. Billie and Richard were avid golfers and were past members of Milburn Country Club, Overland Park, KS and Twin Pines Country Club in Harrisonville, MO. They really enjoyed playing golf together. Billie loved competition and was Women's Club Champion several times at both Country Clubs. Billie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Richard, a great-grandson, Mitchel McKee, three sisters, Mary Maas, Alice Rinehart, and Daisy Derks and two brothers Albert Hooper and Richard Hooper. She is survived by one daughter, Sandra Wray and her husband Charles of Menifee, CA; one son, Richard Utterback III of Adrian, MO; two brothers, Jack Hooper of Raytown, MO and Ken Hooper of Kansas City, MO; two grandchildren, Christine McKee and her husband Timothy and Shannon Maurisak and her husband Jeffrey; and four great grandchildren, Max and Maggie McKee and Haleigh and Liam Maurisak.
