Patricia Ann Hagen, age 59, of Butler, Missouri died Monday, April 14, 2008 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. She was born February 21, 1949 to Benjamin Barton and Norma Jean Perkins Bell in Kansas City, Missouri. Patricia is survived by her son, Brian Spitler of Butler, Missouri; two brothers, Alvan Bell and wife Susan of Independence, Missouri and Larry Perkins of Archie, Missouri; a sister, Marsha Murphy and husband Michael of Topeka, Kansas; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mrs. Walter Haggard died in Kansas City, Mo., Saturday, May 19, 1917. The cause of her death was cancer of the stomach, from which she had been suffering for several months. Mrs. Haggard was about 58 years old at the time of her death. She is survived by a husband and several grown children. The deceased was a niece of Jeff McCombs, of this city. The body was shipped to Adrian Tuesday noon and taken to Altona where funeral services were held from the Altona Baptist church. Burial in Altona cemetery. H. T. Carr was the undertaker in charge.

Edward P. Haley died at the German hospital in Kansas City, Sunday, August 18th from injuries received in the Chicago and Alton machine shops at Slater, Mo., last Saturday, aged 41 years. Edward Haley was raised near Burdett and lived there until fifteen years ago when he moved to Kansas City, he had been employed by the C. & A. railway for thirteen years and at the time of his death held the position of foreman in the shops. He was a man of good moral character and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. Last week Mr. Haley was here visiting his sister Mrs. Mamie Hill, and his brother Richard Haley, at that time he was in the prime of vigorous manhood, and his sudden taking away came as a shock to his many friends here. He is survived by a widow, two children, mother, two sisters and two brothers. These have the sympathy of their many friends in their bereavement. - LATER REPORT - Mr. Haley received the injuries which caused his death while working in the railway shops at Slater. He was between two engines on the dead track when they cut a string of box cars in on the track without giving a signal, these struck one of the engines and he was caught between the bumpers of the engines literally crushing him about the hips. The body was brought to Adrian Tuesday noon and taken to Burdett where funeral services held, conducted by Rev. Wolfe, of Slater. The Slater Knights of Pythias, of which deceased was a member, had charge of the burial service. C. S. Ells, Frank Wetton, Pat Mahoney and Jas. Taylor represented the Slater Lodge and gave the burial service of the Order. There were representatives of the Labor Order present at the funeral. The floral offerings were profuse and very beautiful.

Mrs. Ida L. Haley died at her home in Adrian Monday, November 29, 1943. Mrs. Haley suffered a stroke of paralysis over two years ago and had been an invalid since that time. Her age was 69 years, 6 months and 6 days. Ida Laura Chrisman, daughter of Ewing and Martha Chrisman, was born at Independence, Missouri, May 23, 1874. When a young lady she moved to Bates county, locating in the Burdett community. April 29, 1894 she was united in marriage to Edward P. Haley. To this union three children were born, Naomi Goldie and Harry Lee, who preceded her in death, and Perry Fletcher Haley, of the home. Mr. Haley died August 13, 1912. Mrs. Haley is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Anna Corbin, of the home. These sisters have made their home together for a number of years. These good ladies had been a comfort to one another in their unfortunate affliction in the late years. Mrs. Corbin lost her sight a number of years ago. Fletcher Haley has given his mother as well as his aunt constant care in these years of affliction. Becoming a member of the Christian church early in life, Mrs. Haley had lived a true Christian life through all the years. Her membership has been with the Adrian Christian church since 1924. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors and Pythian Sisters organizations. Funeral services were held from the Adrian Christian church Wednesday afternoon, December 1, 1943. Burial was in the Burdett cemetery by the Creath & Six funeral service.

Dru Allyson Hancock, the loving daughter of Jesse Lee Hancock and Crystal Dawn Mason-Hancock, left this world the morning of Nov. 28, 2007, at Children's Mercy Hospital, in Kansas City, Mo., after a sudden illness. Dru was born on May 11, 2005, at a healthy 7 pounds, 11 ounces. She was loved dearly by her two older brothers, Draven and Drake Hancock, of Nevada. She was an angel in her short time in this world, and will be dearly missed. She was preceded in death by her cousin, Lindsey Mason and by great-grandparents and many other family members. Dru has left behind her mother and father, two brothers; maternal grandparents Mickey and Laurel Mason, of Nevada, and paternal grandparents Donn and Crystal Hancock, of Walker; dozens of cousins, aunts, uncles, other family and a world of friends. Mildred Mary Haney, 80, Nevada, Mo., passed away on Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born on Aug. 24, 1926, in Macks Creek, Mo., to Charles Chester Eldred and Bertha Christine Jetter Eldred. She and Earl William Haney were married in Kansas City, Mo. He preceded her in death in November 1966. Mildred was born and reared in Macks Creek, and attended school there. She lived most of her life in Macks Creek and had also lived in Kansas City and Tulsa. In the mid '70s, Mildred moved to Nevada where she has lived ever since. During her lifetime, she has worked various places such as Windemere Baptist Bible Camp, National Bellis Hess in Kansas City and the Mitchell Hotel in Nevada. Mildred was a member of the First Baptist Church in Macks Creek and later the Pine Street Baptist Church in Nevada. Survivors include one son, John Haney, Shreveport, La.; one daughter, Donna Gordey, Fort Smith, Ark.; six grandchildren, Amber Fleaman, Rachel Watson, Sarah Haney, Paul Haney, Angela Conn and Darrell Gordey Jr.; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Majorie North, Adrian, Mo. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Melvin Casey Eldred; and one sister, Mabel Klump. Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 28, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada.

Harry L. Hannah was born January 24, 1908 in St. Clair County, Mo., the son of Ettie Lou and Henry Hannah. He passed away July 5, 1973, at the Bates County Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr. Hannah was united in marriage to Gertie Marie Snodgrass, August 25, 1928 who passed away April 5, 1953. To this union one son was born, Arnold D. Hannah. Mr. Hannah had spent most of his life in Butler. He was a carpenter by trade and had many, many friends among those in this line of work. He gave his life to Christ at an early age and was a member of the Ohio Street Methodist church where he was a faithful member, serving on many committees and devoting his time and talents wherever and whenever needed. He was a longtime member of the Methodist Mens Club. On December 24, 1953 he was married to Angel Leslie, who preceded him in death August 14, 1972. He is survived by one son, Arnold Hannah of Butler, and one stepson, David Leslie of Tuscon, Ariz.; six brothers are Abe, Clayton, and George of Butler; Claude of Peculiar, William and Eugene of Jasper and one sister Mary Salmon of Montrose, Mo.; two grandsons, Kirk Douglas and Matthew Wade Hannah of Butler; three step-grandsons, Charles, Ken and Richard Leslie; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services were held Sunday, July 8, at the Underwood-Steinbeck chapel. Burial was made at Oak Hill cemetery.

Joseph "Abe" Hannah was born February 6th, 1898, in St. Clair County, Missouri. He departed from this earth on December 16, 1993 at Butler, Missouri. Funeral Services were held on Sunday, December 19, 1993, at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri. Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Joseph "Abe" Hannah, age 95, of Butler, Missouri, died Thursday, December 16, 1993 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. He was born February 6th, 1898 to Robert Henry and Ettie Lou Replogle Hannah in St. Clair County near Osceola, Missouri. Abe is survived by one son, John Hannah and wife, Beth, of Aurora, Colorado; one daughter, Doris McManus and husband, Francis, of Oswego, New York; one brother-in-law, Fred Niggley of Butler; three sisters-in-law, Florence Arnote of Kansas City, Kansas, and Crystal Hannah and Willa Niggley both of Butler; eight grandchildren - John and Jim Hannah, Mike, Mark, Jim, and Judy McManus, Carol Balmer, and Nora Lee; 13 great-grandchildren: Chris, Cori, Stephen and Rachel Hannah, Brian, Jennifer, Kristin, Gregory, Maureen, Nicole, Ryan, and Steven McManus, and Hannah Marie Balmer; and one great-great granddaughter, Shanaya McManus. He was preceded in death by his wife on September 9, 1992; also his parents, nine brothers, and one sister. Abe, one of 11 children, grew up near Osceola where he worked in the timber, cutting railroad ties and firewood and hauling to the old lime kiln. He worked as a hired hand for several farmers before moving to Bates County where he farmed a Scully lease. He married Cora B. Niggley on December 8, 1920, and to this union, two children were born. He lived in the communities of Altona, Ballard, Passaic and Butler where he farmed, drove a school bus, worked in John Ray's Tin Shop and Wayne Bedwell's Gambles Store, and as a meat cutter for the markets of A&P, Raleigh Welch, and McGuires. He retired and painted Standard Oil Gas Stations.

Henry Clayton (Tad) Hardie, 99, Schell City and Kansas City, the son of John William and Viola T. (Suggs) Hardie was born May 13, 1909, in Rich Hill and passed peacefully from this life on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at his home in Kansas City. Early in his life, Tad, along with his family, moved to Schell City where he attended school. At the age of 19 he moved to Kansas City to work at Sheffield/Armco Steele. He worked there until his retirement. It was while living in the Kansas City area that Tad met and married Harriett J. Brocaw and together they had two sons and one daughter. A few years after Harriett's death, Tad married Virginia (Newhouse) and together they enjoyed more than 30 years of marriage until her death in 2007. Even though Tad lived most of his life in Kansas City, he always remained close to Schell City and maintained a home in town for extended visits. He was a deeply religious man who studied the Bible throughout his entire life. At the time of his death, his church membership still remained at the United Methodist Church in Schell City. He was an avid golfer and became an accomplished photographer simply through trial and error. Survivors include his two sons, Ronald Theodore Hardie, Independence, and John William Hardie, Des Peres; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Of special mention is Tad's great-niece, Brenda, who cared for him during the last months of his life. His beloved daughter, Barbara, preceded him in death in December 2007. Services were held on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City. Interment was in the Flat Rock Cemetery, Schell City.

Harry Joe Hardy, 81, Sheldon, Mo., passed away on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, following a lengthy illness. He was born July 8, 1926, in Hayden, Colo., to Roy Paul Hardy, Sr. and Beatrice Florence Workman. He married Jacquelyn Joyce Stites on Aug. 21, 1949, in Centralia, Mo., and she survives of the home. Harry graduated from Sheldon High School in 1944. He joined the United States Navy and served from June 1944-1946 mostly on the U.S.S. Cross in the Pacific Theatre of War during World War II. Following the service, he worked for Texas Empire Gas for three years until he went into farming, retiring in 1991. In addition to his wife Jackie, survivors include one daughter, Joy Halseth and her husband, Alfred, Joplin, Mo.; two sons, Randy Hardy, of the home, and Mark Hardy, Sheldon, Mo.; four grandsons, Yancey McKnight, Houston, Texas, Michael Hardy, Joplin, Mo., Chance Halseth, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Austin Hardy, Buffalo, Mo., and three great-grandchildren, Mollie Halseth, Raymore, Mo., Alexandria Hardy, Beaumont, Texas, and Brody McKnight, Houston, Texas, and one nephew, Greg P. Eugene "Gene" Charles Harms, 73, son of Albert Henrick Harms, Sr., and Ruby P. (Rohning) Harms, was born June 1, 1930, at Cole Camp, Mo. Gene passed away Tuesday evening, Feb. 10, 2004, at his home in Schell City, with family members holding his hand. In 1935, the Harms family moved to Schell City. Gene attended Schell City School. On Nov. 22, 1952, he married Bonnie Jean Amick in Kansas City, Mo. To this union two daughters were born, Karen and Kim. Gene was in the U.S. Army and served his country in the Korean Conflict from September 1954 to September 1956. In the Army, he had his own welding shop, a sign above its door read "Harms Welding." Gene received the Good Conduct Medal. When he returned from Korea to Kansas City, he went to work for General Motors at their Fairfax plant. He worked for them 21 years as a painter. During this time he and Bonnie also enjoyed farming on weekends at their farm near Schell City. They moved down to the farm full-time in 1971. They had a cow/calf and row crop operation for many years. Gene was one of the first farmers in the area to broadcast soybeans. Several local farmers came by to look at his fields near Harwood. At first Gene could not understand why there were so many tracks in the entrance to the field. In the days Gene was farming, he was sometimes called "Mr. Green Jeans." Everyday Gene wore pine green uniform pants and a matching shirt to work in. He seemed to think it was appropriate for his work clothes to match the color of farm machinery he liked best. Once he even spray-painted a canvas hat John Deere green. It was a different style of hat; it looked similar to a hat a gangster would wear. Gene wore it daily to the field. We are pretty sure no other farmer had a hat like it. You never knew what he was going to paint green and yellow next. In 1984, Gene and Bonnie opened "Double A Package Store" in the basement of their home. They also sold various odds and ends they collected at auctions in their store. When their youngest granddaughter, Kelsey, just a toddler, visited them, she would take it upon herself to announce loudly "customer" anytime she hear the driveway bell ring into the house. We all got a kick out of that. Sometimes Kelsey would spend a whole week at her grandparents farm. They retired from the store in 1995. After retiring Gene and Bonnie continued to attend many auctions around the area, went fishing and spent time with family and friends. Gene suffered a great loss in 1997, when his wife and partner of 45 years passed away. He was never quite able to adjust to that loss. Gene then turned to his family and his coffee shop friends to fill his time and of course the Western Channel. He also still enjoyed keeping up on what other local farmers were doing. He would sometimes visit Sam Vantellman's fields to see how the harvest was going. He would drive by Steve Bell's new farm east of Walker every week or so, anxious to see what changes Steve had made since his last drive-by. In September, 2002, Gene was blessed with his first grandson, Cameron Albert Parrish. In October of 2003, Gene was very happy to attend the wedding of his granddaughter, Leslie. Later, on Dec. 6, 2003, he was honored to help walk his oldest granddaughter, Amanda, down the aisle on her wedding day. We had spoke to dad/grandpa on several occasions about accepting Jesus as his Savior and about seeing Bonnie again in Heaven. We told him it was something he could count on. Dad knew how very much we loved him. Though we know God loved him much more. We hope he could see Jesus in us and our actions. God truly blessed us when he chose our dad and grandpa, a kind, caring, generous man, who also knew how to be quite a funny character. Dad spent his last day here with his two daughters and two of his grandchildren, Amanda and Cameron (age 17 months). Someone had urged us not to go to work that day, Amanda came home from work early, so that we could all go over and be with him. Dad also visited by phone that day with his close friend Madelyn (owner of one coffee shop). She said they laughed and joked, and while they talked Gene eased her mind about how he was doing by telling her of an imaginary doctor appointment he had the next day. Madelyn had him call her whenever he was not coming out to the cafe so she knew he was okay. This is one of several nice things about living in a small town. People really care and look out for each other. As we look back on that day we can see what a detailed plan God had for it and that he was right there with us holding our hands as he always is. Dad was never a complainer. When asked how he was feeling he would sometimes just say, I'm feeling a little slow today. He always did his best to keep up an illusion for everyone, to try and cover how bad he probably really felt. Looking back, we can see and we are hearing from others that he must have worked pretty hard at this. All so his family and friends wouldn't worry as much. Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie; his parents, his brothers, Virgil, Joseph, Henry and Earl; and by two infant brothers, William Hale and Bobby Q. Also, his father-in-law, Raymond Amick. Services were held Saturday, Feb. 14, at Schell City Christian Church. Burial was at Green Lawn Cemetery, Schell City, Mo. under the direction of Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home.

James Dale "JD" Harris, 63, Adrian, Mo., died at his home Friday, May 25, 2001. Graveside services were May 29 at Altona Cemetery. Mr. Harris was born Sept. 10, 1937 in Malden, Mo., to Joe and Bessie Mae (Jackson) Harris. He attended school until he joined the United States Army, serving two terms of duty in Vietnam. He was a security guard and private police officer most of his life. He married Oneta Leighty, who survives, on July 23, 1992. Hen enjoyed playing guitar and played in bands. He was in the backup band for Loretta Lynn for a number of years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger days; enjoyed going to sporting events and school events in which stepdaughter Cristi Jones was involved. He loved being with family and doing things with them. He is also survived by two other stepdaughters, Kelli and Alisa Jones; daughters Pamela Sue Harris and Sharon Temmons; a son, James Harris; two adopted sons, Daniel and Michael Harris; four sisters, Juanita Redman, Della Langston, Mary Terrel and Ruby Hossman; and numerous grandchildren and other relatives. MRS. ELIZABETH HARRISON DEAD - Mrs. Elizabeth Harrison, a native of Bates county, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alva P. Jones, 3646 Charlotte, Kansas City, Missouri, Wednesday, December 11, 1940, aged 87 years and 11 months. Elizabeth Crawford, daughter of Col. And Mrs. Wm. Crawford, was born in Bates county in the Altona community, December 14, 1854. The Crawford family was among the early settlers of Grand River township. Here she grew to womanhood. November 6, 1870, she was united in marriage to James Coleman Harrison. Of this union six children were born, one son, James; Archibald, died at the age of three years; one daughter, Cora Lee, died at the age of eight years. The oldest daughter, Mrs. Ida Tabler died in 1920. The living children are, Mrs. Pearl Steven, of Howe, Indiana; Mrs. Alva P. Jones, Kansas City, Mo.; and Mrs. W. H. Kratz, of Belton. There are nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, a sister Mrs. Charity White, Eldorado Springs, Missouri.

JAMES COLEMAN HARRISON DEAD - James Coleman Harrison died at his home in this city Monday, March 1st, 1915; aged, 70 years, 7 months and 1 day. Mr. Harrison was born in Morgan county, Missouri, July 30th, 1844, and resided there until 1868, when he came with his parents to Bates county, locating on a farm near Altona, where he resided until 1893, when he moved to Adrian where he resided until his death. After moving to this city he was engaged in business for some years but two years ago sold his grocery and hardware store and retired. Mr. Harrison was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Crawford November 6th, 1870. Of this union five children were born, one son, James Archibald, died at the age of three years; one daughter, Cora Lee, died at the age of eight years. The widow, three daughters and an adopted daughter survive. The living children are Mrs. Ida Tabler, of Adrian; Mrs. Pearl Steven, of Decatur, Illinois; Mrs. Ethel Jones, of Topeka, Kansas, and the Miss Jessie Harrison. Mr. Harrison was converted September, 1888, and united with the Altona M. E. Church South and held his membership there until death called him to his reward. He was a good man a kind neighbor and an excellent citizen, he measured up to every requirement of good citizenship and had the respect and esteem of all who knew him. Funeral services for Mr. Harrison were held at Adrian and Altona. The services here were held from the Methodist church Tuesday morning. The service at Altona was held from the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon. Burial in the Altona cemetery.

Walter L. Harrison died in Kansas City, Mo., Thursday, February 5th, 1920, after a brief illness of influenza complicated with pneumonia; aged 32 years, and 4 months. Walter L., son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Harrison, was born in Grand River township, Bates county, Mo., October 5th, 1887, and spent all the years of his life in his native township. September 11th 1911, he was united in marriage with Miss Dean Bankee, who survives him. Besides the widow he is survived by his parents, two brothers and two sisters, they are: C. P. Harrison of Altona; Hardaway Harrison, of Kansas City, Mrs. Earl Broughton, of Kansas City, and Miss Anna Harrison, at home. About 10 years ago Walter was converted and united with the Altona Methodist Church. He was a good citizen and enjoyed the esteem of those among whom he had spent all the years of his life. His death will be deeply mourned by a wide circle of friends, who extend sympathy to the stricken relatives. The body was brought to Adrian Friday and taken to Altona, where the funeral services were held from the Altona Christian church. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

He worked as a farmhand on a family farm at Amsterdam, MO from 1937 to 1942. In November 1942 he joined the United States Army. He served in a tank battalion as crew member and commander during WWII. He served 16 months in France, Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. After leaving the military in January 1946 he was a truck driver and farmer. He was married to Pearlie Mae (Bass) Hartsell for 40 years. After he retired he loved to fish and pick up pecans. He was preceded in death by four brothers, David W. Hartsell, Raymond Hartsell, Walter D. Hartsell and Robert Leon Hartsell; and three sisters, Mary K. Leuty, Clara Belle Martin and Blanche M. Chamberlain. He is survived by his wife, Pearlie Mae of Stockton, MO; one brother, George LeRoy Hartsell and his wife, Lois, of Archie, MO; two stepdaughters, Ann Aliey and her husband of Stockton, MO and Sue Carey and her husband of Kansas City, MO; and many nephews and nieces.

Rites for Mrs. Nancy N. Harvey. The body of Mrs. Nancy N. Harvey, 99 years old, former resident of Rich Hill and a most highly esteemed woman, who passed away March 26, at the home of a daughter Mrs. Josephine Stephenson, in Kansas City, arrived here Saturday and burial in Greenlawn Cemetery. Funeral services were held Friday evening at the Evler Chapel, 1300 Linwood Boulevard at Kansas City, and services also held at the grave here Saturday morning. Besides Mrs. Stephenson, she also is survived by a daughter Mrs. Sarah Kretzinger, of Rich Hill, and two sons Wm. Z. Harvey, ID and Frederick C. Harvey of Kansas City. Services at the grave were conducted by Rev. Knight. The pallbearers were her grandsons: Cyde Welliver, Merl Sargent, E D. Harvey, Lyle Harvey, Bernice Dickison, and William Minton.

Olga Hilda Christina Haverland, 89, was born at a farm home in Williston, N.D. on March 3, 1917, to Herman and Anna Maria Bellach Lindenman and passed away May 23, 2006, in the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, Clinton. Olga's family moved from North Dakota to Rockville when she was a young girl. They traveled in a Maxwell car whle livestock traveled by box car to Missouri. She lived with her parents and 12 siblings in rural Rockville. She attended and graduated from the eighth grade at Fairmount School in Rockville. Olga was 34 yers old when she was united in marriage to Raymond J. Haverland, Lowry City, on April 7, 1851, at the Evangelical Reformed Church in Prairie City. Olga and Raymond bought a farm outside of Lowry City. They were married for 20 years when they adopted their son, Gary, and their daughter, LaDonna. Olga was involved in 4-H in Bates County as a leader in sewing and cooking crafts. She also started a 4-H club in Lowry City and enjoyed 27 years of service in St. Clair County. She loved to volunteer in her community and at her church at Valley Center. She was married to Raymond for 40 years. Olga is survived by her son, Gary Haverland, Lowry City and her daughter, LaDonna Warren, Moberly; daughter-in-law, Melinda Haverland, Lowry City; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one sister, Pearl Wilson, Butler, and a host of other family members and friends. Olga was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Haverland; her parents, Herman and Anna Maria Lindenman; 11 siblings, Clara Lindenman, Emma Lindenman, Anna Lee, John Lindenman, Albert Lindenman, Herman Lindenman, Arthur Lindenman, Lily Lindenman, Fred Lindenman, Freida Wilt and Elmer Lindenman. She was loved and will be missed by everyone that knew her. Services were Friday, May 26, at Valley Center United Church of Christ. Interment was in the Valley Center Cemetery under the direction of Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

Stanley Andrew Haynes of Grayslake, Ill. passed away Aug. 31, 2007, at home. He was born on Sept. 4, 1928, in Walker, Mo., the first-born child of Irl Potter and Margaret L. (Weddle) Haynes. Stan enlisted in the United States Navy in 1948. His naval career included sea duty in connection with the Korean Conflict, two tours off Vietnam during the Vietnam War and two round-the-world cruises. Chief Personnel man (PNC) Haynes retired in 1971, after most recently serving as Supervisor of the Military Personnel Office of the Ninth Naval District at Great Lakes. Numerous awards and commendations were granted to him during his career. In 1989 he retired from Allstate Insurance in Skokie after 17 years of service. He enjoyed serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster of Wildwood, Ill., Boy Scout Troop No. 71. He enjoyed music and sang with the Zion Concert Band and the United Protestant Church Choir. A devoted family man, he also enjoyed woodworking, camping and spending time with family, especially at their cottage near Mecosta, Mich. Stan is survived by his wife Betty L. (Bay) Haynes, whom he wed Nov. 26, 1961, at the Chapel-by-the-Lake, Great Lakes, Ill.; by his son Mark (Jane) Haynes and granddaughters Elisabeth and Kathryn of Waukegan, Ill.; by his daughter Beth Haynes of East Peoria, Ill.; by his brother Paul (Janet) Haynes of Ann Arbor, Mich.; by sister-in-law Janice Haynes of Jackson, Mich.; and by six nieces and one nephew, plus a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lucille (Haynes) Hazekamp, and brothers Alvin Lander Haynes and Alan Ray Haynes. Charlotte Flashes - The remains of Julias Heckadon, who died Wednesday at this home near Sprague was laid to rest in the Howell Cemetery Friday. The burial service was conducted by the Masonic Lodge of Foster. His brothers, Fred, and wife and Will, and wife of Mound City, Kansas, John and children of near Rich Hill, his sister, Mrs. William Bones of Oklahoma City, and her daughter, Lizzie of Kansas were present. Other relatives and old neighbors were at the cemetery to meet them.

Kendall Edward Heckadon was born on Feb. 26, 1988, in Overland Park, Kan. He was the son of Kenny and Linda Heckadon. He passed away on June 1, 2008, as a result of an automobile accident at the age of 20. Kendall attended Rich Hill High School and was a graduate of the class of 2006. He was active in band and baseball. He was employed by 3M, in Nevada. Kendal was passionate about the outdoors. He loved to go fishing, hunting, mushrooming and boating with his life-long hunting partner -- his dad. When his dad was unavailable, he was joined by his dog, Duke. Kendall was the epitome of a perfect brother. He loved to spend time with his sisters, Kenya and Kenda. Kendall had another life-long friend -- his mom. He was very close to her and enjoyed going to concerts and just having fun. He was always there for his family and would do anything for anyone, he did not know many strangers. Kendall spent a lot of time with all of his grandparents. He was what you would call their "right hand" man. Kendall was loved my many, and he loved all, especially the ladies. Kendall was preceded in death by his uncle, Wayne Yoss. Kendall is survived by his parents Kenny and Linda Heckadon; sisters Kenya McFrederick and husband Adrien, of Hume, and Kenda Heckadon, of the home; two nieces, Milia and Talya McFrederick, and one nephew Peyton McFrederick, all of Hume; paternal grandparents, Ellsworth and Betty Heckadon; maternal grandparents, Vernon and Della Yoss, all of Rich Hill. Kendall will leave behind several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and extra special loved ones. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 5, at Rich Hill Christian Church. Cheryl Lynn Henry, age 60 of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, October 19, 2008 at her home in Butler after a two-year battle with cancer of the brain. She was born December 29, 1947 to John Howard and Lucile Meta Vahrenberg Huerner in Portsmouth, Virginia. Cheryl's mother re-married and Cheryl was raised by Norman Eddie Whertvine, the main father figure in her life. Cheryl, one of eight children, grew up in Chamois, Missouri where she attended elementary school and graduated from Chamois High School in 1964. She continued her education at Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, Missouri, earned her Master's Degree in Education and taught as a Special Education Teacher in the Missouri School Districts of Camdenton, Higginsville and 26 years in Butler, retiring in 2002. Cheryl was married on April 11, 1980 to James Edward Beasley, and to this union, three children were born. Mr. Beasley died in an automobile accident on April 14, 1990. Cheryl married Robert "Bobby" Edward Henry Jr. on July 20, 1991 and together they raised her children. Grounded in her faith, she was a devoted Christian and member of the Butler First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was involved in the Purse Strings Investment Club and Church Women's Group. Cheryl, fondly known for her mellow disposition, was loving, caring, humble . . . and always satisfied. With a heart of gold, she was selfless and giving to family and friends. Being the eldest child, Cheryl was like a second mother to her siblings and, as a young adult, sewed tirelessly for her sisters. Throughout her career as a teacher, she was a comforter and a role model to others. Some of her pastimes included walking, shopping, cooking, listening to music of the 1960s, eating sweets, growing geraniums, playing cards, watching Bonanza, Gunsmoke and Reba on TV, singing, visiting with friends, reading love or romance stories, going to craft shows where she sold tye blankets, and playing scrabble with her mom. Spending time with her family was her ultimate enjoyment--as was spoiling her grandchildren. She was a devoted wife and proud mother. Pete Henry, 70 of Drexel, passed away Saturday, November 27, 2010 at his home in Drexel. Pete was born April 14, 1940 in Kansas City, Mo., the son of John Stewart and Mary Theresa (Peckenpaugh) Henry. He married Linda Ryan on January 19, 1962 in Kansas City. Pete served in the U.S. Air Force, and was most proud of being a union electrician with I.B.E.W. 124. He loved his family, hunting, fishing, and also farming. Pete was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Harold Henry. He is survived by his wife Linda of the home; sons John and Pat Henry; as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services Wednesday, November 31 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel, MO. Burial will follow in Sharon Cemetery, Drexel.

Mrs. H. G. Hensley died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John T. Gossard, in Grand River township, Tuesday, March 7, 1922, of diptheria; aged, 16 years, 6 months and 13 days. Florence Gossard was born August 24th, 1905. Most of her life was spent in Ohio, but for the past few years she has resided in Bates county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John T. Gossard. In December 1921, she was united in marriage with Horace G. Hensley and they were living at the Gossard home when she was stricken with her last illness. Florence was an excellent young lady and her death came as a great blow to her husband, parents and her grandfather, E. M. Bice. In this sorrow they have the deep sympathy of many friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

Nora A. Henson, 81, Nevada, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at Nevada Regional Medical Center. She was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Bates County, Mo., to Ira Newton King and Sarah Lea Malcom King. She married Orvel Bridges in 1961 and celebrated 38 years of marriage before his death in 1998. She later connected with an old family friend, Stanley Henson, and they were married on Dec. 31, 1999, until Stanley departed this life in 2003. Shortly after, Nora had to move to Moore-Few Nursing Home until her passing. Nora was raised in rural Bates County near the old Bethel Baptist Church where she accepted Christ and was baptized at a young age. She moved back to this area in 1961 where she worked at Nelly Don Factory for a number of years. After retirement, she decided to work part-time at the Wal-Mart snack shop for a short time. She was an avid fisherman most of her life, also enjoyed her gardening, canning, and cooking for her family. Nora was an accomplished seamstress and loved to sew for her children and grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, Rollin Wallace and his wife Donna, of Nevada, and Bob Wallace and his wife Marcella, of Nevada; one daughter, Faye Periman and her husband Bob, of Nevada; one stepdaughter, Mary O'Hair and her husband Darrell, Deerfield, Mo., 11 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Norma Brammell, of Independence, Mo., Lucille Hoglan, of West Plains, Mo, Martha Scott, of Harrisonville, Mo., Arletta Dover, of Shelton, Wash., and June Northup, of Elmwood, Ill., and numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Sonny, George and Jasper King; one sister, Beatrice Goswick; one son, Eddie Wallace; one daughter, Rita June Wallace; one grandson, Darren Wallace; and one great-grandson, Joshua Wallace. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 9, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada.

She was born May 19, 1930, in Nevada, to Marion Ray Moore and Lula Elizabeth Carroll Moore. She married Norman Paul Herstein on May 20, 1947, in Girard, Kan. He preceded her in death on March 31, 2000. Dorothy grew up in Nevada and attended Nevada schools. She traveled throughout the United States with her husband, a pipeline welder. Dorothy attended the United Methodist Church. She was an avid bingo player. She loved her children and grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, Gary Herstein and his wife Mary, Nevada, and Ron Herstein and his wife Judy, Nevada; one daughter Robin Fisher and her husband Gene, Nevada; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Larry Moore and his wife Marilyn, Springfield; one sister, Ruby Folkner, Nevada, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Death In California of Mrs. G. V. Higgins - News came to Appleton City Monday of the death of Mrs. G. V. Higgins, longtime resident of Appleton City, now of California. Mrs. Claud Dean of Deepwater, sister of Mr. Higgins, received the word Friday, January 5, that Mrs. Higgins had passed away that day at a hospital in San Bernardino, Calif., where she and Mr. Higgins had been living for a while. She suffered a second stroke on December 31st. Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Mrs. Dark (Geneva) Shipley of Anderson, Mo., who is ill at the hospital in Stella, Mo. One son, Leo, of Yucca Valley, Calif.; also three other daughters, two reside in San Bernardino and one in the state of Washington. Mrs. Higgins is also survived by four brothers: Sine and Man Hooper, Butler, Mo.; Alva Hooper, Kansas City, and Jesse Hooper, who has been in the hospital at Osceola for two years. Mr. Higgins is reported to be in very poor health. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins left Appleton City about two years ago, going to California for their health. They spent most of their married life in and near Appleton City and were valued members of the First Baptist Church. At the time the news was received here, there was no date set for the funeral services for Mrs. Higgins as no burials are permitted in the state of California on Sunday.

DEATH FROM SPINAL MENINGITIS - Darrell Franklin, 1 year old son of Clifford and Irene Sexton Highley, died at Mercy hospital in Kansas City, Tuesday evening of spinal meningitis. The child was born October 20, 1937. Last Friday the infant became ill and was brought to Adrian to a physician Saturday. Monday the child's condition became alarming and he was taken to Kansas City. Within two hours after reaching the hospital the child died. Brief burial services were held at the graveside Wednesday afternoon in Altona cemetery, and burial was made by the Creath & Six service.

Ralph Edward Highley, son of Thomas B. and Clarissa Cope Highley was born December 4, 1886, and departed this life October 3, 1972 at the age of 85 years. Ralph was born and grew up in the Altona area. He married Josephine L. They lived in Kansas City many years. She preceded him in death in January 1953. He then moved back to Altona. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Paul Highley. He is survived by one brother Alvy B. Highley of Fredrick, Colorado; four half sisters, Mona Corwine and Thelma Underwood of Ballard, Hazel Harris of Craig, Colorado and June York of Bolivar; five half brothers, Clifford Highley, Holden, Woodrow, Butler, Robert and William of Archie and Leroy of Adrian. Graveside services were held Sunday, October 8, 1972. Burial was in the Altona cemetery.

PIONEER CITIZEN DEAD - Thomas Burton, son of Joseph and Hannah Highley, died at his home near Altona, December 15, 1932; aged 75 years, 1 month and 1 day. Mr. Highley was born on a farm near Altona, November 14, 1857, and spent all the years of his life near the place of his birth, where he was favorably known and respected. On December 18, 1879, he was married to Miss Clarisa Cope. To this union three sons were born: Alva of Altona, Ralph of Adrian, and Paul of Grainfield, Kansas. On December 14, 1902, he was again married, to Miss Lula Laycock. To this union thirteen children were born, three whom preceded him in death. We have not the names of the surviving children by this marriage. About sixteen years ago Mr. Highley was converted and united with the Altona Baptist Church, remaining a member of that Church until his death; he was also a member of the Masonic Order. Mr. Highley was a pioneer in this country and possessed the characteristics of the pioneers, friendly, accommodating and helpful in every possible way. He had a pleasing personality and made and kept friends. We all liked Bert and enjoyed his friendship and cheerful spirit and shall miss him sadly in the circle of his friends. Funeral services for Mr. Highley were held Saturday afternoon from the Altona Baptist church. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery by Creath & Six, funeral directors.

On Wednesday March 27th, 1895, Harry Hill died at his home near Burdett, Mo, aged 30 years four months and six days. Many friends gathered to comfort his sorrowing wife, but God alone can heal her wounded heart. How hopeful the wife and sister were until near 2 o'clock in the morning, while they watched so faithfully over their dear one the angel of God came softly into the chamber and called Harry to come up higher. As the spirit fled from earth to heaven the wife and sister watched to see if possible there might be one ray of hope left, but their hope was vain, the spirit had gone. Dear ones prepare to meet him on the other shore; his troubles are over. We hope that the heavy blow that now seems impossible to bear, will prove to be an ultimate boom.

Ethel Nadine Hillsman, age 90, the daughter of Charles Lewis and Stella Mae (Greer) Cranfield was born Feb. 12, 1916, in Beaman, Mo., and passed from this life on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott, Kan. Ethel attended elementary school in Taberville as well as her freshman and sophomore years, then her junior year in El Dorado Springs before completing her senior year at Schell City High School. After graduation she was united in marriage to Clarence George Hillsman and to their union five children were born. The family lived for a time in the Schell City area then relocated to the Fort Scott area where Ethel and the children lived while Clarence was in the military. After Clarence returned from the service the family lived for a time in the Rockville and Appleton City areas before Ethel, along with her children moved back to Fort Scott in 1954. She was employed as a laundry attendant until her retirement. Her hobbies included gardening and flowers and she took great pride in her rose garden. She was a tireless member and worker in the Parkway Church of God Holiness and volunteered countless hours as a playground supervisor for Fort Scott Christian Heights. Her belief in God, her church involvement, and her volunteerism were all integral parts of her life. Survivors include two sons, Hubert Dale Hillsman of Meridian, Miss., and Clarence David Hillsman of St. Joseph, Mo.; three daughters, Sally Lou Dyer of Independence, Kan., Charlene Mae Stoaks of Vale, Ore., and Florence Jacqueline Peck of Sedalia, Mo.; one sister, Neola Maxine Smith of Cerritos, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the Parkway Church of God Holiness in Fort Scott, Kan. Interment was in the Green Lawn Cemetery in Schell City, Mo. James M. "Bob" Hilte was born September 16, 1917 in Lowry City, Missouri to John K. and Susie L. (Snethen) Hilte. He passed away March 5, 2008 at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri at 90 years of age. Bob lived in the Montrose, Lowry City and Deepwater, Missouri area all of his life. He was employed by the Missouri Department of Transportation for 31 years retiring in 1980 as Shed Foreman. He also worked on chain saws and lawn mowers for around 25 years. Mr. Hilte was a member of the United Presbyterian-Methodist Church in Montrose where he had taught Sunday school for about 50 years. Bob and Alice M. Carter were united in marriage January 19, 1941 in Clinton, Missouri and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this year. Bob enjoyed gardening and his favorite thing to make was a big, beautiful garden. He also liked to fish. Preceding Bob in death were his parents and four brothers, Arnold, Howard, Ernie and Earl Hilte. Survivors include his wife, Alice, of the home, their two sons, John P. Hilte and wife Linda of Montrose, Missouri and James C. Hilte and wife Tammy of Appleton City, Missouri, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Service: Hill & Son Funeral Home, Appleton City, MO on Saturday, March 8, 2008. Interment: Montrose Cemetery in Montrose, MO.

Nina Mae Hockett, 75, Adrian, MO, died Friday, May 29, 2009 at Adrian Manor in Adrian. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, June 2 at the Scott Cemetery in Amsterdam, MO. Nina was born November 26, 1933 in Henry County, MO, the daughter of George Horroll and Fern (Hughes) Corwine. Nina, the youngest of four children, grew up in the Amsterdam area where she graduated from the Miami RI School. After graduation she moved to Kansas City, MO where she got a job at Western Electric as a key punch operator. She held numerous waitressing jobs and retired after several years operating Hockett's Upholstery. In 1952 she married W. R. "Ted" Hockett in Harper, MO. Nina was a member of the Amsterdam Baptist Church. She enjoyed camping, her flowers, feeding the birds and being with family and friends. Nina was preceded in death by her parents and a son-in-law, Forrest "Frosty" McGraw. She is survived by her husband, Ted, of the home; four daughters, Nylene McGraw, Mound City, KS, Ginger Filtingberger and her husband, Jim, Debbie Moles and her husband, Bob and Deanna Hockett, and one son, Dustin Hockett, all of Adrian, MO; two brothers, Norman Corwine, Colorado Springs, CO and Nason Corwine and his wife, Barb, Amsterdam, MO; one sister, Naomi Kershner, Independence, MO; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

HOFFMAN, Earl Neil

Earl Neil Hoffman, 61, was born on April 1, 1940, to Lewis Glenn and Susie Rose Scott Hoffman. He passed away Friday, Nov. 23, 2001. Neil attended grade school at Oak Ridge in Vernon County. He graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1957. Neil accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church. In November of 1958, Neil joined the United States Air Force and proudly served 20 years. In those years he was awarded numerous medals and served in many countries and throughout the United States. On Nov. 11, 1959, Neil married Sharon Boone of El Dorado Springs. To this union three precious sons were born; Robert Neil, Mark Alan and J. Lee. Neil and his family returned to El Dorado Springs in December of 1978. Neil's hobby was driving trucks which he dearly loved. He drove dump trucks for Ronald Alexander from 1982 until 1987 and in 1990 he joined Contract Freighters Incorporated of Joplin. In May 2000, he was awarded one of their highest honors which was 'one million safe driving miles'. Neil was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Susie Rose Hoffman; three sisters, Ethel Taylor, Nina Williams and Dorothy Flory and two brothers, George and Glenn R. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his sons-Robert, Mark and J. Lee; daughters-in-law, Laurie and Nancy; grandchildren-Jarod, Jessie and Randy; his sister, Lillian 'Tillie' Newman; sisters-in-law, Vernal and Lou Ann Hoffman; uncle and aunt, Sidney and Inez Hoffman; mother-in-law, Zeila Boone; brother-in-law, Gary Boone, and his wife, Barbara; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Graveside services were held Monday afternoon, Nov. 26, at the Harwood Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.

Dr. Carol Penny Holman (nee O'Lear), of Nevada, died Monday, Nov. 12. Born in Passaic, NJ, Penny lived in Mahwah, NJ, before beginning graduate studies at Syracuse University where she met and married her husband Dr. Loyd Bruce Holman. She is survived by her husband, and their son Dr. Alexander Holman, his wife Emily, and their son Liam. Penny was sister to Linda and Bill Dator, and aunt of Lisa, Rebecca and Will. A graduate of Ramsey High School and of Michigan State University, Penny received a Masters Degree and Certificate of Advanced studies in School Administration from Syracuse, and a doctorate in Psychology from the Forrest Institute of Psychology. Penny served as the director of education for the New York Upstate Medical Center's facility for emotionally disturbed blind children, as a teacher of children with special needs, as a writer of educational materials for the National Crusade for Opportunity, and with her husband as a producer of documentary films for the New York State Department of Education in India. She maintained a practice as a clinical psychologist for more than 10 years in Nevada.

Mary Katherine Holmes, 90, Nevada, Mo., died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, following a lengthy illness. She was born March 12, 1916, in Nevada, to Joseph A. "Babe" Sullivan and Glenn Stukesberry Sullivan. Katherine grew up in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School. She lived nearly all her life here. Katherine was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and B.P.O.E. Does. Survivors include one son, Mike Holmes and his wife, Kathie, Olathe, Kan.; three grandchildren, Jason Holmes, Kansas City, Mo., Hilary Holmes, Olathe, and Jennifer Loving, Lenexa, Kan.; one great-grandchild, Tyler Cossairt, Lenexa; one sister, Dorothy Ann Malinoski, Hattiesburg, Miss., and nieces and nephews. Erastus Evans Holt was born Feb. 25, 1844, in Calloway County Mo., died March 6, 1914, at his home Southwest of Appleton City. Age 70 years, and 11 days. While a young man he moved to Bates Co., where he lived up to the time of his death. Dec. 20, 1868 he was married to Mary Ford. To this union were born 5 sons: William E., Albert E., Emmett M., Smith, and Walter V. Holt. He is survived by his wife, 3 sons, 5 sisters and 2 brothers, to whom a host of friends and neighbors extend their deepest sympathy in this time of their sorrow and loss. In the fall of 1869 Mr. Holt was converted in a meeting held by J. Hugh Robison a Baptist Missionary. He became a charter member of the Round Prairie Baptist church and for over forty years has been one of its deacons, ever zealous and wise in his care of his Masters cause. After an illness of almost a month on Friday morning about 3 o'clock he quietly passed away to be at home with his Lord. May his loved ones be comforted with the thought that "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints," and that in the glorious morn of the resurrection we shall be reunited never more to say good-bye. He will be sadly missed in his church and community as well as in his home. The funeral service was conducted at the Round Prairie Baptist church Sunday morning March 8. Interment was made at the Round Prairie Baptist Cemetery.

Wilbur Wallace Holt, son of William E. and Carrie (Stephenson) Holt, was born near Appleton City in the Round Prairie neighborhood,Bates County, Mo. on September 9, 1900. He died May 10, 1988 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Appleton City, where he had lived the past five years, at the age of 87 years, 8 months and 1 day. On September 14, 1921 he was united in marriage to Pauline C. Raybourn in Butler, Mo. To this union three children were born, Olive Aileen, Lola Louise and Chester Charles. He was converted at an early age and joined the Round Prairie Baptist Church where he remained faithful until his health failed. He lived on the same tract of land all his life near the Reynard School where he received his eighth grade education. He spent his entire lifetime farming, which was his chosen vocation. He enjoyed taking care of livestock, especially good cattle. He was interested in modern methods of farming, having served on the County ASC committee. He worked for the betterment of his community, having served on the local school board, cemetery board, the township road board and tax collector and was always willing to help a neighbor. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two little brothers. He leaves his wife, Pauline C. of Colonial Manor; daughters, Aileen Mitchel and husband, John of Montrose; Lola Browning and husband, John L. and son, Chester and wife, Mary Lue all of Appleton City; eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Though he lived a good, long life, he will be missed by his family. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 12 at Eckhoff-Hill Funeral Home in Appleton City. Burial was in the Round Prairie Cemetery.

MRS. CHESTER HOOKER DEAD - Mrs. Chester Hooker died at her home near Altona, Saturday night, September 28, 1912, age 24 years. Her maiden name was Taylor, a daughter of Squire Taylor, and she was reared in the Altona neighborhood. Funeral services were held at Altona Monday. Afterwards the body was laid to rest in the Altona cemetery.

Lonnie Lee Hooker, Rt. 1, LaCygne, Kansas, passed away January 29, 1975 at Ft. Scott, Kansas at the age of 65 years, 5 months and 12 days. He was born August 17, 1909 at Altona, Missouri, to Ella Jane Taylor and Chester James Hooker. On December 4, 1938 he was married to Jane P. Stockdall and to this union was born three sons. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and twin brother. He is survived by his wife, Jane Hooker, three sons, James Earl of Independence, Mo.; Samuel Joe Hooker, Ft. Riley, Kansas; Charles Lee Hooker of the home; two adopted sons, Johnny Lee Bear, Houston, Texas, Robert Wayne Hooker, LaCygne, Kansas; three daughters-in-law; three grandsons, James Bear, Jimmy Hooker, Robert Wayne Hooker, Jr.; two granddaughters, Heather Hooker and Linda Hooker; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 1, 1975 at the Atkinson-Dickey Chapel. Interment in Altona cemetery.

Plane Crash Fatal To Pilot, 136 Safe - The pilot died, but 136 children escaped injury Saturday morning when a light plane crashed into the Green Bowl in Lee's Summit, where the children were bowling. The plane, fortunately, only struck the roof of the building before plummeting into the paved parking lot behind the structure. Officers identified the dead man as Albert F. Hooper, Jr., 63, of Adrian, Mo., reported to be an experienced pilot. Investigators this week were still trying to piece together what exactly caused the crash. They said Hooper was flying alone in the Cessna 150 rented from the Robinson Aviation service in Butler, Mo. The plane punched a hole in the roof of the bowling alley, before bouncing off and crashing in the lot where the force of the crash threw the body of the pilot more than 20 feet and broke the plane into several pieces. Noise of the crash was heard for some distance, attracting a crowd. The crash also knocked out power temporarily over a section of town. Location of the hole in the roof of the bowling alley, 803 W. Oldham Pkwy., was above the pin-setting machine and was not near the bowler's area. Wilbur Pollard, owner and operator of the bowling alley, said 106 children were bowling in a Saturday morning league and that 30 more children were waiting for lanes to open. No one was injured inside the alley and the youngsters were orderly. Pollard said they were kept inside until their parents arrived to take them home. Edgar C. Robinson, who rented the plane to Hooper, said Hooper took off alone about 9 Saturday morning on a pleasure trip. Hooper, he added, was an experienced pilot. He identified him as a lithographer in Adrian who has owned several planes of his own. He had an up-to-date pilot's license, Robinson said. About a half hour before the crash, witnesses reported seeing the airplane above U.S. 50 and Lea Drive. The plane was headed in a northwest direction attempting to cross U.S. 50 when one wing hit a steel wire attached to a power line. It broke off into the empty parking lot. The top of the second pole hit the east wall of the building, about 10 feet from the entrance embedding itself in the wall.

Alva Franklin Hooper, Sr., 89, Lee's Summit, died yesterday at a medical center in Lee's Summit. He was born in Osceola, Mo., and lived most of his life in Adrian, Mo. He lived the last three and a half years in Lee's Summit. Mr. Hooper was a farmer and a produce dealer in Adrian. He was a member of the Adrian United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nettie F. Hooper of the home; four sons, Alva F. Hooper, Jr., Adrian; Jack Hooper, 8829 Hunter, and Kenneth L. Hooper, 7414 Hedges, both of Raytown, and Richard R. Hooper, Dallas, Tex.; three daughters, Mrs. Alice Rinehart, Lee's Summit; Mrs. Daisy Derks, 11004 Military Club Road, Raytown, and Mrs. Billie Utterback, 9517 West Eighty-ninth, Overland Park; two brothers, Sina Hooper and Manuel Hooper, both of Butler, Mo.; 21 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. Services will be held Wednesday at the Atkinson-Dickey chapel, Adrian; burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian.

Bonnie J. Hooper passed away at home October 26, 2008, and is finally pain-free after years of battling rheumatoid arthritis and its debilitating complications. Bonnie was born on June 27, 1929. She attended school in Adrian, Mo., moved shortly after graduation to Kansas City and married Ken Hooper, with whom she attended school. They moved to Raytown in 1951 and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June. By choice, Bonnie was a "stay at home mom" to her sons. Bonnie was predeceased by her parents, stepsister and son, Tim. She is survived by her husband, Ken; son, Jerry (Lisa) of Lee's Summit; grandsons, Ryan, Rolla, Mo., Lauren, Lawrence, Kan., Chris (Anna) of Kansas City, and Nick (Kristy) of Greenwood. She is also survived by one great-grandson, Seth. Services Thursday, Oct. 30, at One Spirit United Methodist Church, Kansas City. Cremation will occur with private inurnment in Crescent Hill Cemetery at a later date.

HOOPER, Charles Eugene

Charles Eugene Hooper, the eldest son of B.F. and Mary E. Robertson Hooper, was born Oct. 19, 1877 in St. Clair County near Osceola, Missouri and departed this life on September 20, 1955 at the Butler Memorial Hospital at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 1 day. He grew to young manhood on a farm near Osceola and received his education in the rural schools of St. Clair County. On Nov. 12, 1902 he was united in marriage with Ola d. York of near Johnstown, Missouri. Miss York had formerly been a resident of Osceola, moving to Bates County with her parents in 1901. They went to St. Clair County where they made their home on a farm for two years, moving to Bates County in the spring of 1904, settling on a farm near Ballard. In the fall of 1915 Mr. Hooper bought a farm near Ballard and built a house, moving his family there in the spring of 1916. And it is there Mr. and Mrs. Hooper reared their family of three sons and seven daughters. One daughter, Mary E., died in infancy and one son, Francis M., passed away at the age of seven years. It is at the hold home where many family reunions and other happy gatherings have been enjoyed among which was the celebration of Mr. & Mrs. Hooper's golden wedding anniversary on Nov. 12, 1952. Mr. Hooper was converted in 1912, uniting with the Oak Hill Methodist Church, later transferring his membership to the Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church where he remained a faithful member until his death, attending services as long as his health permitted. Mr. Hooper was especially fond of the little children of the Church and the community and many of them called him the "Chewing Gum Man" as he never was without this small favor to pass out to each child he met. Mr. Hooper was a kind husband, a loving father, a good neighbor and a progressive citizen, being especially interested in good roads and better schools for the community. He retired from farming about eight years ago when his health began to fail but was a zealous gardner and he worked at this hobby as long as his health permitted. He planted his garden this spring but was never able to tend it. He was patient during his entire illness, never losing faith, nor doubting but that he would recover. Mr. Hooper was preceded in death, besides the son and daughter mentioned above, by his parents, and a sister, Daisy who passed away in infancy. Survivors are: His wife of the home; three sons, Nathan F., Charles E. Jr., and Russell K., all of Kansas City, Mo.; seven daughters, Mrs. H.H. Hoover and Mrs. Orva Grasshart of Urich, R.F.D., Mrs. Harley Hoover, Clinton, Mrs. Guy Hendrickson and Mrs. Phyllis Hawley of Independence, Mrs. Sherman Martin, Kansas City and Mrs. John Hayden of Gardner, Kansas; twenty-one grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four brothers, A.F. Hooper, Adrian, S.E. Hooper, Butler, J.C. Hooper, Osceola and Manuel Hooper, Ballard; one sister, Mrs. Virgil Higgins, Appleton City. A great number of nieces and nephews, besides other relatives and a host of friends.

Mrs. Ella Leota Hooper was born December 1, 1889, the daughter of William and Naomi McGee, in St. Clair County, Mo., and departed this life on October 10, 1968 at the age of 78 years, 10 months and nine days, at the Bates County Memorial Hospital. She was united in marriage to S.E. Hooper on September 9, 1906 and had observed their 62nd wedding anniversary on September 9. This union was blessed with five children. Those preceding her in death were her parents, a son, Dennis McGee Hooper; two brothers, Ed and Asa McGee and a sister, Docia Allen. She is survived by three sons, Edgar Hooper of Dallas, Tex.; Forrest Hooperof Oklahoma city, Okla., LaVerne Hooper of Kansas City, Mo.; one daughter, Pauline Gabriel of Butler, Mo., a half-brother, Ernest Wilson; a half-sister, Nona Scott, both of Eaton, Colo.; seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. She was an active member of the Methodist Church and enjoyed her work in the circle, as long as her health permitted. Mr. Manuel Hooper, a retired Butler businessman, died June 21, 1981, at Bates County Memorial Hospital. He was born July 21, 1893, in Osceola to Benjamin F. and Mary Elizabeth Robertson Hooper. In 1917 Mr. Hooper moved to the Ballard area, where he operated a grocery store for several years. He and his wife moved to Butler in 1956, where they owned and operated the Hub Drive-in until 1959. On June 6, 1929, he married Leta Hendrickson. Survivors include Mrs. Hooper of the home; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was June 24 at the Underwood-Steinbeck Chapel. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

She passed away July 6, 1973 at the Independence Sanitarium at the age of 89 years and eleven months. Mrs. Hooper had been active and able to live alone until March 27, 1973 when she became ill. Since that time she has been tenderly cared for by her children. Most of her last three months has been spent in the Bates County Memorial Hospital and the Independence Sanitarium with some of her children always at her bedside. Mrs. Hooper was united in marriage to Charles Eugene Hooper November 12, 1902. They made their home in St. Clair County near Osceola until the spring of 1906 when they moved to Eastern Bates County where they made their home until Mr. Hooper passed away September 20, 1955. Mrs. Hooper sold her farm and moved to Butler in June 1957, where she has since resided. When a young woman, she accepted Christ as her Savior and became a member of the Oak Hill Church. After a few years when the church ceased to function, she moved her membership to Walnut Grove Church. When she came to Butler to make her home, she became a member of the First Christian Church. She was very dedicated in her work for the Lord and was very faithful in her attendance as long as her health permitted. Her greatest interests in her life were her church, her family and her friends. She loved her sons-in-law and daughter-in-law as her own children. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Francis M. Hooper, age 7 and one infant daughter, Mary E. Hooper, her parents, three brothers and two sisters. She leaves to mourn her passing, three sons; Nathan Hooper of Independence, Mo., Charles E. Hooper and Russell K. Hooper, both of Raytown, Mo., and seven daughters: Mrs. Nora Eidson of Butler, Mrs. Ruby Martin of Grandview, Mo., Mrs. Wilma Hendrickson of Independence, Mo., Mrs. Opal Hoover of Clinton, Mrs. Dorothy Grosshart of Hickman Mills, Mo., Mrs. Jennie Hayden of Gardner, Ks., and Mrs. Phyllis Bell of Oklahoma City, Ok. She also leaves three daughters-in-law, six sons-in-law, three brothers-in-law, 26 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, a large number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were Monday, July 9, at the Underwood-Steinbeck Chapel with burial at Walnut Grove Cemetery.

She was born in Warsaw, Mo., and had lived in Adrian, Mo., most of her life before moving to Butler in 1974. Mrs. Hooper was a member of the Adrian United Methodist Church. She leaves two sons, E. E. Hooper, Kansas City, and Kenneth L. Hooper, Raytown; two daughters, Mrs. Daisy Derks, Kansas City, and Mrs. Billie Utterback, Harrisonville, and 19 grandchildren. Private services will be today at Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian.

Sina E. Hooper was born Sept. 11, 1886, in St. Clair County, Missouri. He was the son of Mary Elizabeth Robinson and Benjamine Franklin Hooper. Mr. Hooper passed away Feb. 8, 1975, at the Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler. He had been a resident of this community for several years and was engaged in the produce business much of that time. He was united in marriage Sept. 9, 1906, to Ella Leota McGee. She preceded him in death Oct. 10, 1968. One son, Dennis, also preceded him in death. Mr. Hooper is survived by one daughter, Pauline Gabriel of Butler; three sons, Edgar of Dallas, Tex., Forrest of Alamo, Tex., and Laverne of Kansas City, Mo. He is further survived by one brother, Manuel Hooper of Butler, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 12, from the Underwood-Steinbeck Chapel. Burial was made in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Pauline (Sloan) Hooten, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2008, in St. Louis, Mo., after a long illness. Pauline was born May 18, 1920, at home near Archie, Mo., the daughter of James and Louisa Sloan. Pauline graduated from Harrisonville High School and received a teaching certificate from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo. She always had jobs that focused on helping others. She taught school in a one room school house. She later worked at Cass County Memorial Hospital where she met her love of her life, her husband of 39 years, George Hooten. She joined his family and ran the Hooten Feed & Grocery Store in Cleveland, Mo. In 1957 Pauline and her family moved to Long Beach, California where they owned/operated a Coffee Shoppe. They were well known for their wonderful breakfast, lunch and homemade pies! Pauline and her family returned to Belton, Mo., in 1962. She began a career at Macy's that lasted 21 years. She started as a sales associate on 11/22/63 and retired as a Sales Manager. After her husband passed away in 1986, Pauline spent time helping to raise two young grandsons. When she returned to Missouri she relocated to St. Louis. In St. Louis, Pauline met many new friends and was active in a Christmas Advent program and Christian Brother College High School. Preceding Pauline are her parents, James and Louisa Sloan, her sisters and her brothers. She is survived by her daughters, Linda (Larry) Hammonds of Marshall, Mo., and Joyce (John and Matthew) Cassidy of St. Louis; her sons, James Wilson of Wilmington Beach, Calif., Chuck (Linda) Wilson of Kailua, Kona; and her sister, Goldie Rook of Pleasant Hill, Mo. Pauline was a loving, supportive mother that will be missed by her seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren located in St. Louis, Tucson, Ariz., Dallas, Texas, Vista, Calif., Portland, Ore., and Chicago, Ill. Pauline will be remembered by her family and friends as a warm, caring and loving woman. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 26, at Cullen Funeral Home, Raymore. Mo. Burial will be in Glenwild Cemetery.

Frances Ellene Hopkins, 83, Sheldon, passed away on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, at her home in Sheldon following an illness of several months. She was born Oct. 13, 1924, in Coffeyville, Kan., to Duff Brown and Emma Lorene Parsons Brown, Frances married Daniel L. Hopkins on Jan. 8, 1946, in Las Vegas, Nev., and he preceded her in death on April 4, 1993. Frances was born and raised in Coffeyville, Kan., and spent her youth there. She has an Associates of Arts Degree from Coffeyville Community College. Frances worked for many years as an accountant in a number of locals, retiring in Nevada in 1989. Following her retirement, she worked for years for the Drywood Township. She was a member of the Sheldon Christian Church, Sheldon; the Tri-County Genealogy Society, the Jolly Senior Citizens, Sheldon, and the TOPS Club, Nevada. Survivors include one son, Steven D. Hopkins and his wife Denise, Sheldon; three grandchildren, Joshua D. Hopkins, Raymore, Mo., Jeremy Hopkins, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Robby Schreier-Hopkins, Sheldon; one sister, Connie Clark, of New Mexico.; one brother, Chadwick Brown, of Washington, She was preceded in death by one brother, Dillard Brown, and one sister, Doyce Bell. Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 23, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Sheldon Cemetery, Sheldon.

Manetta Caroline Horton, 94, of Hume, Missouri, passed away Monday, August 8, 2005. She was born July 19, 1911 at Redfield, Kansas, the daughter of Carl Oscar and Margaret Charlton Peterson. The family moved to Iola, Kansas where she graduated in 1929. She married Harry Edward Horton on July 20, 1934. Harry died July 10, 1978. She was a member of the Hume Methodist Church, a 69 year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She worked with Harry for Blaker Lumber & Grain for many years and as manager of the propane company in Hume, retiring in 1978. She also played piano for church for 60 years and for many weddings, funerals and programs and contests for Hume and surrounding communities. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and loved to be with her family. She leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and Larry Bogan; one grandson, Loren Bogan & wife, Annette; two granddaughters, Loree White & husband, Mike and Laina Dixon and Steve Miller; four great granddaughters, Stefani, Kaley, Ashtynn & Brianna and soon to be born, Brooklyn; eight great grandsons, Bryon, Kristopher, Robert, Brandon, Brayden, Blaine, Blake and Nikolas and two step great grandchildren; Autumn and Chance; one sister-in-law and husband, Lorene and Harry McClaughry and special nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, parents; three sisters; three infants and one great grandson, Brett Landon Bogan. Charles Edward Houston, born Sept. 30, 1928, in Clinton, to Bert and Gertie Houston, passed away April 14, 2006, at St. Joseph Medical Center, Kansas City. Charles was raised in Osceola and graduated from Osceola High School. He attended college in Warrensburg, then worked in forestry service until joining the Marines in August 1946. He lived in Kansas City where he worked for General Motors and later became a painter and carpenter. In December 1953 Charles was united in marriage to Catherine Howard. They moved to Rockville in the 1970s where he was mayor for 22 years. He was a very active member of the Rockville Baptist Church and was also a member and former commander of the VFW in Appleton City. Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine; granddaughter, Sandra; his parents; three brothers, Darrell Ray Houston, Bobby Houston and Coy Houston and his dog, Boots. He is survived by his daughter, La Donna Rector and her husband, Rolly, South Sioux City, Neb.; one brother, John Bert and his wife, Nancy, Osceola; four sisters, Katherine Massey and her husband, Ewell, Hale, Darlene Brattin and her husband, Sonny, Tiffin, Nova Brattin, Osceola, Patty Clark and her husband, Doug, Osceola; two grandsons, Scott and Ron; eight great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Services for Charles were Monday, April 17, at the Rockville Baptist Church. Interment was in the Rockville Cemetery under the direction of Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home, Osceola.

Homicide in Charlotte. Adam Howald Shot While Pilfering. On last Sunday morning about two o'clock, Mrs. Rohrbach (or Roback) living in the north-west part of Charlotte township, heard a disturbance among the chickens in the barn and thinking someone might be stealing, she called to her son, a young man to go out and see what was the matter. At first he was unwilling to do so but finally went taking an old musket loaded with shot. He stood on the outside of the barn afraid to enter lest he should be shot or clubbed. He then saw a man running away and shot at him. He did not think he had hit him and returned to the house. The next morning Adam Howald, one of their neighbors who lived just over the township line in Elkhart, was found dead about 75 yards from where the man was when shot at the night before. He had a sack with two chickens in it and some tobacco. Reports say a small quantity of white beans also. The young man who did the shooting came to town, gave himself up and was held to appear at the next term of the circuit court in the sum of $500. Howald was formerly from Germany and was well situated in the world. He was unmarried. He has relatives in Germany, who frequently send him money. His character was none of the best. He was arrested once and fined for stealing and was generally regarded as a hard case.

Betty Lou Howard, 81, Nevada, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. She was born Oct. 27, 1925, in Nanty Glo, Pa., to William Donaldson and Olive Laughlin Donaldson. She was married Dec. 15, 1956, in Newport Beach, Calif., to Lionel Howard and he survives of the home. Mrs. Howard was born in Pennsylvania, but grew up and resided in California until moving to Vernon County in 1976. She worked for 11 years at the Fram Corporation in Nevada. She was a wonderful artist, seamstress and an avid crafts person. In addition to her husband Lionel, she is survived by two sons, Joe Donaldson, Orange, Calif., and Peter Donaldson, Campbell, Calif.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death, by her parents and one son, David. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow at Newton Burial Park in Nevada.

H.S. HOWE KILLED BY STORM - H. S. Howe was born October 24th, 1851, at Tumbridge, Vermont. He was a victim of the cyclone which swept away his home, near Altona, June 15th, 1912. Mr. Howe was married about thirty years ago to Miss Mollie George, who died some years ago. Three children survive him, viz: Mrs. Bennie McLay, Hugh and Kim Howe. Mr. Howe was an excellent citizen. Funeral services were held Wednesday. Burial in Altona cemetery. We have been unable to get facts sufficient for an obituary in the case of Mr. Howe.

Cecil Alpha Hubbard, 72, Butler, Mo., died Sunday, Sept. 7, 1997, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo. Graveside services were held Sept. 11, at Adam Howell Cemetery, Virginia, Mo. Mr. Hubbard was born on Nov. 3, 1924, to Clyde John and Ina Mae Lacey Hubbard in El Dorado Springs, Mo. One of seven children, he grew up in El Dorado Springs. He moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1940 and shortly thereafter on Nov. 21, 1942, he married Corrine Ellis. To this union two sons and a daughter were born. Their daughter, Ellen Marie Scott died and left two granddaughters who the Hubbard's adopted and raised as their own children. His early work experience began by working after school setting pins at a bowling alley. During World War II, he was in the Navy Seabees. He dairy farmed in Walker, Mo., and Olathe, Kan. From 1946 to 1949. In 1950 he purchased a farm near Butler and operated a dairy farm, an orchard and finally a grocery business and bedding plants. He belonged to the VFW and in 1954 was Post Commander of Post 2993 WFW in Olathe, Kan. He was a former member of the American Legion. He leaves his wife, of the home in Butler; two sons, Gary Hubbard, Butler; and John Hubbard, Rich Hill, Mo.; two daughters, Angelia Scott Berry and husband Jeff, Butler; and Shaunna Scott Petty and husband Dylan, Butler; a sister, Lorraine Martins of California; three grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Isaac "Ike" Huff, 88, Clinton, formerly of the Ballard community, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 1991, at the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton. He was born April 20, 1903, in Culver, Missouri, the son of Elmer and Ara J. Thomas Huff. On September 2, 1931, he was united in marriage to Mabel Olive Heckadon and to this union one son, Charles, was born. He lived all but 17 years of his life close to his home near Culver. During those 17 years he was employed as a carpenter for the JC Nichols Company for four years. He was also employed as a custodian for the Antioch School District in Overland Park, Kansas, for 13 years, retiring in 1969. He started the first school bus route for the Ballard school and drove a school bus from 1969 until 1973. He moved to Clinton in 1989. He served as the sexton for the Bethel Cemetery near Ballard for many years. He loved hunting, gardening and traveling. He accepted Christ at an early age and was a former member of the Bethel Church where he had served as Sunday school treasurer and superintendent. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Iona Cook. Survivors include his wife Mable of the home; his son Charles O. Huff of Ballard; two nephews, Grant and Aaron Cook of Butler, and his cousins, Lila Yeates and Nona Nestlerode, both of Clinton. Funeral services were held Friday, September 6, 1991, at the Underwood-Steinbeck Funeral Home in Butler. Burial was in the Bethel Cemetery, near Ballard.

She was born December 9, 1907, in Bates County, the daughter of Charles Henry and Oddie Edmonia Bolling Heckadon. She was married to Isaac "Ike" Huff on September 2, 1931. She was preceded in death by her husband Ike Huff; her brother Truman "Jack" Heckadon, and her sisters, Opal Ellen Heckadon and Carmen Etta Highley. She is survived by her son Charles O. Huff of Ballard; her brothers, Walter Heckadon and wife Doris, Adrian, and Earland Heckadon and wife Carmon of Kansas City, and her sister Jessie O. Lacy and husband Bryan of Adrian. Thomas Monroe Huffman Jr. "T. M.", 85, Rockville, son of Thomas and Elva (Gwinn) Huffman Sr., was born November 28, 1920 in St. Clair County, and died Sunday, August 20, 2006, at Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada. Upon graduation from high school he worked in Jefferson City at the Capital Building until he was called to duty in World War II. After the war he came back to Rockville and married June I. Cline on July 28, 1948. They started their life on a farm in the St. Clair County, Rockville area, then moved to town soon after he became the rural mail carrier for Route 1, Rockville, for 28 years. He was a member of the Rockville United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday School superintendent and Sunday School teacher for many years. He also served the church at large as an on call lay speaker. Soon after the Veterans of Foreign Wars started in Montrose he became a member and until the later years enjoyed attending the meetings. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son Harold H. Huffman. Survivors include his wife June I. Huffman of the home; daughter Phyllis J. Love and husband Austin of Killeen, Texas; grandchildren, Christina, Rena and Frankie Vanderpool of Sedalia, Justin N. Love and Veronica of Houston, Texas; son Eugene M. Huffman of Rockville; daughter Joyce S. Mitchel and husband C. Dean, Rockville; grandson, Barry S. Mitchel, Pawleys Island, South Carolina; son Jon R. Huffman of Bemidji, Minnesota; grandson Matthew T. Huffman and great-grandson Joseph G. Huffman of Bemidji, Minnesota; grandson Scott R. Mrs. Ethelbert Hughes, aged 30 years, living three miles northwest of Virginia, ended her life Tuesday morning at 7:30 by leaping into an open well. It had been noticed for some time by members of the family that she was not strong mentally and, being subject to spells at times, a continual watch was kept over her. In the last few months her health began to fail rapidly and she decided to end her life. Her little niece was left with her while her husband was at work in the field. When the child discovered that her aunt was missing she called her uncle and a diligent search resulted in finding the woman's dead body in the well.

Martha Ann Hughes, daughter of Cornelius and Frances Porter was born June 21, 1884, in Bates County near Virginia, Mo., and passed away February 3, 1972, at the Bates County Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She lived in and around Virginia and Amsterdam all her life with the exception of the last two years when she made her home at Countryside Nursing Home, Butler. In the early days of her young girlhood she was converted and united with the Methodist Church at Virginia. She later moved her membership to the Amsterdam United Methodist Church where she attended as long as her health permitted. She was united in marriage to James R. Hughes March 3, 1907. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Mildred Stilwell, Amsterdam. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Wm. Stillwell, two granddaughters, Mrs. Wm. Cutburth, Paola, Kan., and Mrs. Carl Stanfill, Prairie Village, Kans., their husbands, seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and one sister, Mrs. Etta Hughes, Dallas, Tex. One grandson preceded her in death. She also leaves a number of nieces and nephews to mourn her passing. Funeral services were Sunday afternoon, Feb. 6, at the Amsterdam United Methodist Church. Interment was in the Adam Howell Cemetery under the direction of Mangold Funeral Home of Amsterdam.

He was born on May 5, 1930, in Tunas, Mo., to Herbert Hiram Hume and Alma Lee Piper Hume. On May 18, 1954, he and Barbara Lee Pike were married in Nevada, and she survives of the home. Chet was born and raised in the Tunas area. He lived and worked in the Kansas City, Mo., area for a number of years. Chet came to Nevada in 1952. He worked as an electrician at Nevada State Hospital for 23 years until, his retirement in 1994. He was the original owner and builder of Nevada Speedway in 1963, which he sold after four years. Following his retirement from the speedway, he did automobile mechanic work out of his home. He was Past Exalted Ruler of BPOE No. 564 in Nevada, and a member of the Osage Masonic Lodge. In addition to his wife Barbara, survivors include three sons; Herbert Lee Hume and his wife Linda, Kansas City, Mo.; Michael Dale Hume and his wife Janetta, Gardner, Kan.; and Donald Lee Hume, Nevada; one daughter, Janetta Thompson, Dousman, Wis; 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one sister, Georgia Jackson, Olathe, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and one brother. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.

Harold Lawrence Humphrey, age 76 of Adrian, Missouri died Thursday, December 18, 2008 in Adrian. He was born April 10, 1932 to Howard Wayne and Margaret Whiteford Humphrey in Spencer, Iowa. Harold is survived by his wife of 48 years, Margaret Humphrey of Adrian, Missouri; a son, Stephen Humphrey and wife Michelle of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; two daughters, Patricia Humphrey of Kansas City, Missouri and Catherine Marchesi and husband John of Italy; two brothers, Paul Humphrey and wife Joann of Ft. Smith, Arkansas and Donald Humphrey and wife Barbara of Omaha, Nebraska; a sister, Ruth Martin of Omaha, Nebraska; and three grandchildren, Melanie, Mallory and Eric. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Violet O. Humphrey, 90, of Hume, Mo., died Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City. Mo. She was born April 21, 1917, in Linn County, Kan., the daughter of George and Leona Graham Henne. She graduated from Hume High School. On Dec. 26, 1936, she married Edward Humphrey at Butler, Mo. He preceded her in death on March 20, 1986. She and Edward owned the Humphrey Grocery, and later owned Humphrey TV in Hume. Violet was a member of the Hume United Methodist Church and was actively involved with quilting and making articles for the Lords Acre Day. She loved to cook and was always willing to do so for any church function. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star and had received her 50-year pin. Survivors include two sons, Melvin Humphrey and Judy of Nevada, and Merl Humphrey and Margaret of Fort Scott, Kan.; four grandchildren, Mark, Kristen, Marsha, and Marilyn; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Verl and Orville Henne. Services will be held Sunday, May 6, at the United Methodist Church, Hume. Interment will be in Hume Cemetery. Maudie Mary Jane Hunt, 92, Freeman, died July 18, 2008, at her home after a courageous battle with an incurable condition. She was born March 24, 1916, on a farm close to New Boston, near Kirksville, the daughter of Roy John and Myrtle (Dover) Overstreet. April 1, 1932, she married Mike Perry Hunt in Macon. They had 42 happy years together until Mike died April 9, 1974. Mrs. Hunt lived on the same property for 72 years in Freeman. She was employed at Pratt and Whitney, manufacturer of plane engines during World War II. During the Korean War, she was employed at Lake City Arsenal. Until her eyesight failed, her quilts and sewing were works of art. She was at her happiest when a dinner party was being planned. She loved flowers, antiques, dog shows, the West Line Jamboree and thoroughbred horse racing. Her prized possessions were racing photographs of "Charming Janie" winning with champion jockey, Timothy Doocy. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Mike; two brothers; and a nephew. Surviving are a daughter, Loretta Wiseman and her husband, Toby Dean; a niece, Janet Robinson and her husband, Terry, Lee's Summit; her nephews, Bob Overstreet and his wife, Jean, and Larry Overstreet and his wife, Marci, all of Kirksville, John Marth and his wife, Virginia, Higginsville, Frank Marth and his wife, Leona, Higginsville; a dear and precious cousin of her son-in-law, Wanda Stein, St. Joseph; and her care givers, Julie Baldwin, Garden City, Diana Sanders, Freeman, and Cheryl Nissen, Cleveland. Services were July 22 at the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville. Graveside services were July 23 at the Freeman Cemetery, Freeman.

Marjorie R. Hurst, 84, Nevada, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada. She was born Aug. 25, 1921, in Almeda, Texas, the second daughter of Benjamin H. Sheldon and Francis Gaston Muse. She and her family moved to Kansas where she spent her childhood. Marjorie married the love of her life, Charles Hurst Jr. on Nov. 8, 1942, in Wichita, Kan., while they were both working for Boeing Aircraft. Marjorie and Charles moved with their family to Bronaugh, Missouri in 1962, and then moved to Nevada to be closer to their family after their retirement. Marjorie graduated from High School in Cedar Vale, Kan., and attended college in Winfield, Kan. Marjorie retired from the state hospital in Nevada after 22 years of service. She was a member of the Bronaugh Christian Church. Additionally, Marjorie was a member of Bushwhacker Quilting Guild and secretary of the Bronaugh Volunteer Fire department for several years. Marjorie is survived by her husband Charles of the home; two sons Benjamin L. and Julie A. Hurst, of East Wenatchee, Wash., and Joe H. and Linda Hurst, of Nevada; five grandchildren, Lila Hurst-Carta, Leonard Hurst, Louise Hurst-Rediger of East Wenatchee, Christina Hurst-Compton and Bradley W. and Sherry K. Hurst of Nevada; eight great-grandchildren, Brandi Hurst, Ryan Rediger and Benjamin Carta of East Wenatchee, Ashleigh and Brandon Compton, Samantha Williams, and Reba and Justin Hurst of Nevada; one sister, Helen J. Sailors of Fort Scott, Kan.; one niece, Kay; and one nephew, Bill. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith A. Hurst Willoughby. Marjorie was a fantastic wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She doted on all of her grandchildren and loved being with them as often as possible. One of her favorite pastimes was creating beautiful handmade quilts for her family and friends. Another favorite of hers was "her squirrels." She had a feeder outside her backdoor and left pecans for the squirrels to eat. Once she even coaxed one inside to eat pecans from her hand. Marjorie will be cremated and buried in Atchison, Kan.
