Larry Dale "Abe" Abraham, age 55, of Nevada, Mo., died Friday, July 28, 2006, at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Mo. He was born April 4, 1951, to Leo Joseph and Etta Louise Wisdom Abraham in Clinton, Mo. Larry, one of four children, grew up in the Ballard, Mo., community where he attended grade school and graduated from Ballard High School in 1969. He furthered his education at Central Missouri State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in biology. Larry was a dedicated Conservation Agent of 32 years for the Missouri Department of Conservation serving in the counties of Audrain, Johnson, Buchanan, Camdenton and most recently for 14 years with Vernon County. In the line of duty, Larry was known for his loyalty, perseverance, abiding by the ethics of his career and willingness to help in any situation. In addition, he was well respected by his co-agent in the field Larry's life revolved around his dedication and passion for his job as an agent and spending time with his children. Larry is survived by a son, Ryan Abraham of Columbia, Mo.; a daughter, Jennifer Abraham of Centerton, Ark.; mother, Etta Lou Abraham of Butler; two brothers, Danny Abraham and wife Mary of Pleasanton, Kan., and Steve Abraham and wife Sara of Butler; a sister, Patty Plunkett and husband Ralph of Butler; several nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo J. Abraham in 1994. Cremation memorial services will be Wednesday, Aug. 2, at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler.

Ackerman Rites - The funeral service and burial for William O. Ackerman, 58, Kansas City, Ks., were Monday at Hume, Mo. Ackerman was a brother of M.C. McCurdy, Humboldt, KS. He died November 10, 1960 in Kansas City. He was a stereotype operator for the Kansas City Star and a member of the Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, and of the Brittany Spaniel Club. He attended Brittany dog shows over a wide area and often won prizes with his entries. He has visited in Humboldt many times. Besides Mrs. McCurdy, he is survived by his wife, of the home, and a brother in Florida.

Mary Lou Adam, 77, Ellington, MO, passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2008, at the Advanced Healthcare Medical Center in Ellington, MO, following a lengthy illness. She was born on December 13, 1930, in Rich Hill, MO, to Arthur Benjamin Caldwell and Cora G. Millen Caldwell. She was married to William Adam on August 4, 1949, in Kansas City, MO, and he survives of the home. Mary Lou was born in Rich Hill and grew up in this area. She graduated from Nevada High School in 1948. Mary Lou worked in Civil Service for the Social Security Administration retiring in April of 1987. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a variety of ladies' clubs. Survivors, in addition to her husband William, include four daughters, Fabiene Dix, Hawaii, Valerie Skattebo, Quincy, IL, Sylvia Moss, Gardner, KS, and Madeline Lee, Boyce, LA, five grandchildren, and one brother, Robert Caldwell, Mabank, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, June 13, 2008, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nevada. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Nevada, MO.

Mrs. Clarsie J. Adams died at her home in Adrian, Tuesday night, January 2, 1940. Mrs. Adams had been ill for several weeks. Her age at the time of death was 70 years, 9 months and 2 days. Clarsie J., daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Cope, was born in Jerseyville, Illinois, March 30,1863. In her early childhood she moved with her parents to Missouri and located in northeast Bates county, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to Thomas B. Highley, December 18, 1879 at Altona, Missouri. To this union three sons were born; Alvie Highley, Langley, Okla.; Paul Highley, Grainfield, Kansas and Ralph Highley, Kansas City, Missouri. Besides the children she is survived by two sisters; Mrs. Emma Reeder, Adrian; Mrs. Rose Hughes, Phoenix, Arizona, and four brothers; Milton Cope, Blackwell, Okla.; George and J. A. Cope of Lexington, Mo. In 1905 Mrs. Highley entered into a second marriage with J. H. Adams. There were no children by the second marriage. Mrs. Adams spent most of her life in the Altona community, where she was respected and acknowledged as a true Christian lady and a kind and friendly neighbor. She was a member of the Christian church at Altona. Funeral services for Mrs. Adams will be held this (Thursday) afternoon, from the Adrian Christian church. Interment will be in the Altona cemetery by the Creath & Six funeral service.

Justin R. Adams, 26 of Nevada, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, at his home in Nevada. He was born March 22, 1981, in Nevada, to Laurence Edward Adams and Kathi Diane Fleener Adams. Justin grew up in Nevada and graduated from Nevada High School in 2000. He had lived most of his life in Nevada and also did custom stereo installation. Survivors include his parents, Larry and Kathi Adams, of Nevada; one sister, Dawn Best, of Nevada; grandparents, Ivan and Barbara Digins, of Sheldon; his fiance, Carrie Adams, and her two sons Keller and Gavin Adams, and numerous nieces nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Rosella Adams, and his grandfather, Forest Fleener. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. A private committal service will be held at a later date at Olive Branch Cemetery, in Milo.

Nettie Eunice Adams, 87, Adrian, died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at the Adrian Manor Nursing Home, Adrian. She was born March 19, 1917, near Shawnee Mound in Henry County, the daughter of Meredith and Jessie. Jan. 29, 1939, she married Joe E. Adams in Independence. Mrs. Adams was a homemaker and an Avon representative for many years. In 1946, She, Joe and their three boys moved to a farm in the Austin community near Archie and farmed there for 52 years. She loved to cook for her family and friends. She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Shawnee Mound. For the past five years, Mrs. Adams had been a resident of Adrian Manor and the family thanks the caring people at Adrian Manor for their help. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Joe E. Adams, Aug. 28, 1999; three brothers, Owen, Joe and John; and two sisters, Emma and Maude. Surviving are three sons, Larry Joe Adams and wife, Mary Lou, Mountain View, Ark., John Adams and wife, Marquita, Harrisonville; and Ron Adams and wife, Patricia, Wheaton, Ill; a sister, Daisy, Leeton; a sister-in-law, Ruth, Havelock, Iowa; six grandchildren, Christy, Tim, Terry, Tom, Patrick and Jon; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Services were Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville. Burial was in the Englewood Cemetery, Clinton.

Charles Bobby Alexander, 75, Archie, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at his home. He was born April 26, 1929, in Rockville, the son of Eugene Courtney and Tressa Leona (Parks) Alexander. Jan. 6, 1951, he married Phyllis Simmons in Archie. Mr. Alexander moved to Archie in 1947. He was a U.S. Army/Air Force veteran. He owned and operated the Phillips 66 gas station in Archie for seven years. He worked in pipeline construction, retiring as a foreman in 2001. Preceding him in death were his parents; and a sister, Betty Gairrett. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis, of the home; a son, Scott Alexander and his wife, Dana, Archie; a daughter, Donna Alexander, Belton; two brothers, Bill Alexander and his friend, Phyllis, Rockville, and Sam Alexander and his wife, Janice, Blue Springs; four sisters, Bonnie Sweet, Windsor, Wilma Atkinson, and her husband, Leo, and Mary Anne Elliott and her husband, Jerry, all of Archie, and Etta Sue Arndt and her husband, Don, Adrian; two grandsons, Shaun Muncy, Archie, and Nathan Muncy, Belton. Services were Friday, Sept. 3, at the Atkinson Chape, Archie. Burial was in the Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian.

Leo F. Alexander, 93, formerly of Drexel, Mo., passed away Saturday, August 2, 2008, at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler, Mo. Leo was born September 20, 1914 in Aurora, Mo., a son of Ollie Clay and Amanda (Applegate) Alexander. He was united in marriage to Jessie Durrell Alexander on April 21, 1943 in Merwin, Mo. They were married for 64 years until she preceded him in death on July 9, 2007, at the age of 88. Leo was a farmer, and he and Jessie lived most of their married life in Drexel. They enjoyed their farm life, particularly raising chickens and selling eggs. Leo was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Jessie. He is survived by a niece, Desma Carey of Vail, Ariz., and many other friends and family. Services will be Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel. Burial will follow in Sharon Cemetery, Drexel.

Burial in Adam Howell Cemetery, Virginia, Mo. Mr. Alexander was born Aug. 2, 1942 in Bolivar, Mo., to Bernard and Maurine A. Brobisky Alexander. He grew up in Springfield, Mo., where he attended high school. He lived in Shawnee Mission, Kan., before moving to Butler in 1992. As a truck driver, he transported steel and steel fabrication, retiring in 1992 because of poor health. He married JoAnn Merriman and to this union a son and daughter were born. He attended the Baptist Church and most recently the Virginia Mission. He leaves a daughter, Sheri Marvin and husband Thomas, Hoffman Estates, Ill.; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Melissa and Sarah Marvin and Austin Paul and Anna Lee Alexander. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael Paul Alexander on Dec. 6, 1990.

Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, MO. Juanita was born August 22, 1918 in Cresson, Texas, to Porter and Osie (Ballow) Tennison. She married Porter Allison and moved to the Adrian area in 1936. Juanita was a farmer's wife who loved gardening, animals and the country. Juanita was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Porter, and two brothers. She is survived by one son, Porter J. Allison; one daughter, Mary Lou Stratemeier and her husband, Ed; three grandsons, Phil Allison, Jeff Allison and his wife, Kerri and Mitch Allison and his wife, Barb and five great-grandchildren.

Robert George Allison, son of Robert Wilson and Mary (Shepard) Allison, was born in rural Rockville, Missouri, March 8, 1929. He passed away August 3, 2007 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg, Missouri at 78 years of age. Robert lived in the rural Rockville area near Mt. Zion Church all of his life except for the time he spent in the service. He served his country during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Alaska. After his service time Robert returned home, continuing to live in the area where he had grown up. Robert graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia with a Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Extension, lacking only twelve hours of having a Master's Degree in Soils. Mr. Allison was a member of Kidds Chapel Church and sang with the Mt. Zion Quartet in his younger years. He loved to play his guitar and sing. Robert and Helen Ruth Blackwell were united in marriage November 22, 1959 at Mt. Zion Church and to this union four children were born. He was a good husband and father and enjoyed taking his family on a vacation every year. He loved to travel and especially liked Colorado. The family had also taken trips to Canada and Mexico. Robert had always wanted to go back to Alaska and planned a trip in 1992 when he drove all the way, taking the rugged Alaskan "AlCan" Highway, which is over 1,500 miles long, the last leg of the trip. Robert was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Helen Ruth of the home; his four children. James Edward Allison and wife Jonna of Villa Park, California, Kathryn Gayle and husband Charlie Morlock of Montrose, Missouri, Karol Lynette Smith of Rockville, Missouri and John Robert Allison and wife Heidi of Litchfield, Connecticut; eight grandchildren, Anthony, Jason, and Matthew Smith, Lauren and Lyndsi Morlok, John Robert, Jenelle and Jessica Allison; one step-grandson, Brandon Swieger; and one step-great-granddaughter, Kadence Sexton. Robert will be long remembered for his wonderful smile and the infectious grin that he passed on to those he came in contact with. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. Services were Wednesday, August 8, 2007, at Hill and Son Funeral Home in Appleton City, Missouri. Interment will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Memorial was held at Kidd's Chapel Church.

Prominent Hume Man Dead - Ira Anderson, a prominent resident of Hume died in Mercy hospital in Ft. Scott, Kas. last Thursday. Ira Oliver, son of John and Martha Olive Anderson, was born near Sprague, Aug. 3, 1885. He passed away Nov. 22, 1956, at the age of 71 years, 3 months and 19 days. Oct. 11, 1906, at Ft. Scott, Kas., he was united in marriage to Anna L. Rainey, who preceded him in death. Dec. 17, 1953. Mr. Anderson lived his entire lifetime in the Sprague and Hume communities. He was a member of the Christian Church. Surviving are four sons, E. J. Anderson, St. Louis, Merle and Chas. W. Anderson, Hume and Kenneth Anderson, of the United States Army in Korea; four daughters, Mrs. Irene Caskey and Virginia Finley, of Hume; Mrs. Ruby Billingsley, Rich Hill and Mrs. Betty Barker, Ft. Scott, Kas.; and two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Chadwick, Shadow Water, Kas., and Mrs. Nellie Bellows, Lemon Grove, Calif. Funeral services were held Sunday in Hume Christian church. Burial was made in the Hume cemetery.

John Anderson, At Rest, Hume - John S. Anderson, age 69, pioneer citizen of this community, died suddenly at his home on East Hume Street Thursday evening of heart trouble. While he had not been in good health for some time, his condition was not considered serious and the news of his death was a shock to the community. Fifteen minutes prior to his death he was sitting on the porch, conversing with his family. John Anderson was born December 10, 1861, was a native Missourian and an early settler in this community. He was one of the charter members Hume Christian Church, he and his first wife being the first to be baptized here. His Christian life, which dates back to 1885, has been one of activity. He was an elder in his church for 25 years and has served as a deacon for a number of years. He was truly a Christian gentleman. He was married twice, his wives being sisters from the Olive family, Martha Curl Olive and Mary Alice Olive. To these unions were born six children, one son having preceded him in death. Both wives, likewise, have gone on before. There remains to mourn his parting: four daughters, Mrs. Nellie Bellows of San Diego, California, Mrs. Jesse Chadwick of Devon, Kansas, Mrs. Mattie Chadwick of Scott City, Kansas, Mrs. Minnie Remington of Pittsburg, Kansas, Mr. Ira Anderson of Hume, Missouri and three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Olive of Yale, Oklahoma, Mrs. Cordelia Davis, of California, Mrs. Bertha Gordon and Mrs. Mary Kritzinger of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, besides a number of other relatives and a host of friends. He was a good citizen, a kind father, and a good neighbor. At the time of his death, he was 69 years, eight months and 17 days, almost the three score years and ten allotted to man. Funeral services were conducted from the Christian Church, Saturday afternoon and interment was made in the family lot in the Hume Cemetery.

Martha Helen Anderson, 74, Lowry City, died Oct. 20, 2008, and is walking with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born Feb. 26. 1934, near Harrisonville, the daughter of Walter and Lillie (Skinner) Todd. July 9, 1950, she married Loren Anderson. Mrs. Anderson worked at General Motors Fairfax plant for eight years and was co-owner of Main City Tavern, near Drexel, for 16 years. She was a member of the Gerster Baptist Church in Gerster. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Loren; three brothers; and four sisters. Surviving are three daughters, Peggy Baldwin and her husband, Tom, Ward, Ark., Lorena Gorsage and her husband, Calvin, Archie, and Martha Hannes and her husband, Jeff, Clinton; a brother, Walter Todd Jr. and his wife, Gladys, Independence; seven grandchildren, Mike and Rick Baldwin, Andy Gorsage, Marilyn Carver, Laura Bronson, Daniel Hannes and Helen DeVasher; and 11 great-grandchildren. Honorary casket bearers were Loren Michael Baldwin and Daniel Hannah. Casket bearers were Andy Gorsage, Richard Baldwin, Mark Carver, Dusty DeVasher, Gene Hackler and Bret Hettinger. Services were Oct. 23 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. Burial was in the Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.

Mrs. J.S. Anderson Dies - Mary Alice, daughter of James Madison and Mrs. Martha C. Ricks Olive, was born in Madison County, Illinois, January 16, 1852, and departed this life at her home in Hume, on March 5, 1925, at the age of 63 years, one month and 20 days. When about eight years of age, she moved with her parents to Missouri, settling in Henry County. Here she remained about five years. While in Henry County, she made her confession in Christ as her personal savior and was buried with Him in Christian baptism. In the year 1875, she moved to Bates County, Missouri, in which she lived till her death. On the eleventh day of November, 1895, she was married to John S. Anderson, when living near Sprague, Missouri. They then made their home on a farm a few miles east of Hume. To this union, one child was born, who is now Mrs. Minnie Remington of Hume. One of the traits of her splendid Christian character is that she made no difference in her treatment of her daughter and the five stepchildren, who were her nieces and nephew, who grew to man and woman hood, a tribute to patient care of the only mother they ever knew. Four years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Anderson moved from their farm to Hume where they have since resided. She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, J.S. Anderson, her daughter, Minnie Remington of Hume, two grandchildren, Melvin and Jane Remington of Foss, Oklahoma, Mrs. M. King of Rich Hill, Mrs. Amy Porter of Parsons, Kansas and Mrs. Elle Morelock of Sallina, Kansas. Besides these, a number of other relatives and an innumerable host of friends.

Edward Joseph Andula, Sr., 79, of Leawood, Kan., passed away Sunday, February 3rd, 2008 at St. Lukes South Medical Center in Overland Park. Services will be Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Heuser Funeral Home, Rich Hill, MO. Edward was born on June 26, 1928 in Buffalo, N.Y. He served in the Navy as a helicopter mechanic during World War II until his discharge in 1949. He was a 50+ year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 61 in Kansas City. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and playing cards with his family and friends. Ed was preceded in death by parents and his wife Millie (Cooper) in 1990. He is survived by his children Barbara Rowlette, Linda (Vince) Sokolaski, Edward Andula Jr., Patricia (James) Haase, Raymond Andula, and Anthony (Pamm) Andula along with 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mary Louise Appleberry, age 65 of Butler, Missouri died Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born September 8, 1943 to Lloyd Edward and Gladys Marie Purdue Smith in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Mary is survived by four daughters, Dianna Brandon and husband Ronald of Kansas City, Kansas, Candace Hughes and Lori Register and husband James Allen Thomas all of Butler, Missouri and Cindy O'Neill of Worland, Missouri; a son, Marvin Lloyd Misner of Atlanta, Georgia; two stepsons, Norman Appleberry and wife Gloria and Denny Appleberry and wife Tammy, all of Butler, Missouri; two stepdaughters, Willa Calkins and husband Ellery of Pleasanton, Kansas and Kathy Carver of Butler, Missouri; two brothers, Joseph Smith and wife Cindy of Raymore, Missouri and William Raymond Smith and wife Patricia of Harrisonville, Missouri; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, eight step grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Clay Appleberry; and one brother, Dale Smith.

Aaron B. Argenbright died at Trinity Lutheran hospital, Kansas City, Saturday morning, February 9th. Mr. Argenbright was taken to the hospital the day previous for treatment of an infection on the face. Mr. Argenbright at the time of his death was 60 years, 8 months and 28 days of age. Mr. Argenbright was born in Grand River township, 3 miles north east of Altona, May 25, 1874, the son of Harmon and Mary M. Argenbright. He grew to manhood in the Altona community where he was a progressive farmer. About thirty years ago Mr. Argenbright left the farm and moved to Kansas City, where he was employed by a commission firm at the stock yards. For several years he had been a trader at the stock yards. On October 26, 1898 Aaron was united in marriage to Miss Clara Lentz, in Adrian, Missouri. To this union one daughter was born, Mrs. Celestine Folk, of Kansas City. She with the widow and two grandchildren survive. He is also survived by one brother, Geo. L. Argenbright, of Adrian and many other relatives. Aaron Argenbright was a true gentleman, clean in his personal habits and loyal to his convictions of what was right. In his home he was true and faithful, a kind husband and father. Always a gentleman and square in his dealings with his fellowmen. He was much esteemed by his neighbors and business associates as well as by his old friends who knew him as a boy and young man and his passing is deeply mourned by a wide circle of friends. The large number who came from Kansas City to attend the burial service and the large floral offerings evidenced the high esteem in which he was held. Funeral services were held in Kansas City Sunday at the Freeman funeral home. The funeral party came to Altona in the afternoon where a short service was held at the Baptist church. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery.

Clara J. Argenbright Dies - Mrs. Clara J. Argenbright died July 6, at her home in Fairmount, Mo., at the age of 75 years. Mrs. Argenbright, the former Clara Lentz, was born and reared in this area, and lived most of her life in the Altona community. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Joe Falk, Kansas City; two sisters, Eva, Kansas City and Mrs. Sawyer, Fairmount; and two grandchildren. Her husband, Aaron B. Argenbright preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at the Christian Church in Fairmount, Thursday morning. Burial will be at the Altona cemetery at noon.

George L. Argenbright Passes - George L. Argenbright, prominent farmer and stockman of the Altona community, died at his home, five miles east of Adrian, early Monday morning, September 14, 1942. His death followed an illness of five weeks. He was returned from a Kansas City hospital just a week prior to his death. George Littleton Argenbright was the son of Harmon and Mildred Argenbright. He was born in Morgan county, Missouri, November 27, 1869. With his parents he moved to Bates county when he was one year old. The family located in the Altona community and it is there that Mr. Argenbright spent his entire life. On February 27, 1897, Mr. Argenbright was united in marriage to Miss Gertrude Lenora Claunch, at the C. L. Mills home at Adrian. To this union two children were born, Mary Agell, who died in infancy, and Mrs. Christine Wolf, of the home. He is survived by one niece, Mrs. Joe M. Falk, of Kansas City. J. E., Charles and Albert Argenbright, who so many have believed to be brothers of Mr. Argenbright, are double cousins as are Mrs. Daisy Griger and Mrs. Lena Hook, who are sisters of the above mentioned three brothers. The entire life of Mr. Argenbright was spent at farming and stock raising. There are few men who ever attained the success in this field as did Mr. Argenbright. One need not dwell upon these successful operations as they are universally known. As a community man George was outstanding. In his operations he made a wide acquaintance and to all who knew him he was respected for his honor and integrity. He was a gentleman of the old school and one regarded time well spent after a visit with Mr. Argenbright. Funeral services for Mr. Argenbright were held from the Adrian Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, September 15. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery by the Creath & Six funeral service.

Popular Woman Dead - This community was deeply stricken with grief last Sunday morning, January 25th, when it was announced that Mrs. George Argenbright had passed away at her home, six miles east of Adrian. No woman in the community was more widely known and none better loved than was Gertie Argenbright. She always had a kind word an a pleasant smile for every one she met. From girlhood to mature womanhood she was always the same cheerful, sympathetic, helpful person. Ready and willing at all times to share in the pleasure or to help lift the burden of sorrow from the shoulder of a friend. It was these beautiful traits of character that won her a large place in the affections of the people of the community where she spent her life and, because of these, the people are in deep sorrow because of her passing. Gertrude Lenora Claunch was born in Butler, Missouri, July, 31st, 1875, and died at Altona, Mo., Jan., 25th, 1925, being at the time of her death 49 years, 5 months and 25 days. Her parents died when she was but a child. She was tenderly reared to womanhood by her uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Mills, in Adrian and lived with them until February 27th, 1897, when she was united in marriage with George L. Argenbright of near Altona, where the remaining years of her life were spent. To this union two children were born. Mary Adell who died in infancy and Sibyl Christine, 19 years old, who with her father, survives to mourn their loss. Mrs. Argenbright united with the Altona Methodist church, South, 15 years ago and had been an active member of the same. Besides her husband and daughter she leaves three brothers, one sister and C.L. Mills and daughter Edith, of Seattle, Washington, and a multitude of friends to mourn her death. The sunshine of this beautiful life will linger, as a sweet memory, with her friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Argenbright were held Monday afternoon from the Altona Baptist church. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

Harmon Argenbright Dead - Littleton Harmon Argenbright died at the home of his son, A. B. Argenbright at Kansas City, Mo., Sunday January 20, 1923; aged 80 years and 2 months. Mr. Argenbright was born at Middlebrook, Augusta county, Va., November 19, 1842, and grew to manhood in his native state. He came with his parents and three brothers and one sister to Missouri in 1855, locating at Versailles. When the Civil war broke out he enlisted in the Union Army in the 33rd Mo. At the age of 17 years, served 3 years, 8 months and 20 days. In January 1868 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Mildred Harrison. To this union two sons were born, George L., of Altona and A. B. of Kansas City. His wife preceded him in death nineteen years ago, since which time he has lived most of the time with his son, Aaron in Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Argenbright was a man who had no known enemies. He was always quiet, pleasant and agreeable and never indulged in the strife and bitterness which cause unpleasantness. It was always a pleasure to meet him and to enjoy his amiable companionship. The Argenbright family located in Bates county in 1871, at Altona, where Mr. Argenbright was known and respected by all. His departure will be mourned by many friends. Besides his sons, he is survived by two daughter-in-laws and two grandchildren. At the request of the deceased the body was wrapped in the American Flag. The body was brought here for burial. Funeral services were held at Altona Tuesday afternoon. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

Going Home - Another pure, bright spirit has taken its light from earth to dwell in the bright regions of eternal light. Died, on the 19th of March, 1904, at 3 o'clock a.m., Mrs. Mary Mildred Argenbright, of Adrian. Mrs. Argenbright was a lady in every respect, pure in heart and noble in nature. She had lived in Bates county 36 years and during that time among all of her acquaintances not one has aught to say against her. She was kind and sympathetic to everyone, ever ready to assist the needy and administer to the sick at all times. Her generous heart and noble qualities endeared her to all of her associates and she held a sacred place in their hearts. During her protracted sickness she was patient, forbearing and resigned to her fate not afraid to die. She leaves a host of kindred and friends who mourn her departure, but as she is gone all believe that she is now resting in the sweetness of redeeming love, free from pain and suffering, constantly gazing but out of the bright windows of heaven, beckoning to her husband, children and friends, bidding them to meet her and dwell with her in eternal light and glory. Oh! That all could meet death as calmly as she did. Her husband and children extend their thanks to all of the friends who so untiringly assisted them in her sickness and so kindly waited on her to the last.

Delton V. Armstrong, 85, Jefferson City, MO, formerly of Nevada, MO, passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2008, at the Capital Regional Medical Center, Jefferson City, MO. He was born June 9, 1923, in Joplin, MO, to Delton V. Armstrong and Wilma Irene Wood Armstrong. He married Norma Lee Brown on January 3, 1944, in En Cino, CA, and she survives of the home. Delton lived his early years in Nevada where he attended Nevada schools. He was inducted in the U. S. Army on February 5, 1943. He was trained at the War Dog Reception Training School and served as a dog handler in the Office of Strategic Service (OSS). Delton served in the China/Burma/India theatre. He was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, and China War Memorial Ribbon and Badge. He was honorably discharged on January 7, 1946, at the rank of Tech 4. His occupations included working as a horse trainer with his father, a security guard for Westinghouse in Kansas City, MO, and a police officer for the Nevada Police Department. He retired after 26 years as a sales representative for Kraft Foods in October of 1985. Delton was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Masons. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and spending time with his family. Survivors in addition to his wife Norma include four sons, Lane Armstrong and his wife Lynne Kay, Lake Ozark, MO, Lynn Armstrong and his wife Carla, Jefferson City, MO, Lance Armstrong and his wife Marcella, Jefferson City, MO, and Brad Armstrong, Jefferson City, MO; six grandchildren, Jason Armstrong, Lake Ozark, MO, Claire Armstrong and Chloe Armstrong, Jefferson City, MO, Alicia Armstrong, Jefferson City, MO, Carrie Wilburn and Jill Allen, St. Louis, MO; five great-grandchildren, Kyle Wilburn, Justin Wilburn, Alex Wilburn, and Sarah Wilburn, all of Jefferson City, MO, and Jackson Allen, Jefferson City, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Interment will follow in Antioch Cemetery, Vernon County, MO.

Vickie Lynn Armstrong, 47, Nevada, Mo., passed away at her home on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006, following a lengthy illness. She was born on Dec. 23, 1958, in Kansas City, Mo., to Byron W. Richards Jr. and Frances Morine Foglesong Richards. She married Donald Lee Armstrong on Dec. 2, 1980, in Walker, Mo., and he survives of the home. Vickie came to Nevada at a young age where she has lived ever since. She was a 1977 graduate of Nevada High School. Vickie worked at Nevada Habilitation Center from 1977 until she retired in 2005 due to her illness. Survivors in addition to her husband Don of the home, include two sons, Christopher Armstrong and James Armstrong, both of Nevada; one daughter, Sarah Armstrong of the home; one grandson; one brother William E. Richards, Kansas City, Mo.; and one sister, Debra M. Harlan, Gardner, Kan. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Jerry Richards. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada.

Mavel is survived by her son, Roy Hockett and wife Mary Jo of Des Moines, Iowa; two grandchildren, Joseph Hockett and wife Allison and Holly Hockett; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and two brothers, Herschel and Ruschel.

BEN ASHBAUGH RITES - Benedick Ashbaugh, son of John W. and Elizabeth A. Ashbaugh was born near Burdette, Mo. on May 25, 1879 and passed away May 21, 1963 at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 26 days. He lived his entire lifetime near the place of his birth. He was married to Lulu Scott on December 24, 1910. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Lulu, one brother, Cleve Ashbaugh of Canton, Illinois, a large number of nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 23, 1963 at the Six Chapel. Burial was in Burdette Cemetery.

DIES IN PHYSICIAN'S OFFICE - Luke Ashbaugh, pioneer farmer of East Boone township, died Friday night, January 25, 1946. Mr. Ashbaugh had spent the day working on his farm and became violently ill after the day's work. He was brought to the office of Dr. E. E. Robinson in Adrian and died while undergoing treatment. Charles Luke Ashbaugh was born in East Boone township, near Burdett, November 23, 1872. His age at death was 73 years, 2 months and 2 days. He was the son of John W. and Elizabeth Ashbaugh. Mr. Ashbaugh was united in marriage to Miss Minnie Balgum at Burdett January 3, 1896. The widow with three sons and a daughter survive. They are Willard Ashbaugh, Pueblo, Colorado; Edwin Ashbaugh and Mrs. Onie VanEaton, Kansas City and Clyde Ashbaugh of the home. Also surviving are three brothers, John, Ben and Cleve Ashbaugh, and one sister, Mrs. Nannie Seeley, all of this community. Funeral services were held from the Burdett Baptist church Monday afternoon, January 28. Burial was made in the Burdett cemetery by Creath & Six funeral service.

Clyde Ashbaugh - Clyde Irvin Ashbaugh, son of Charles Luke and Minnie Belle Ashbaugh was born near Burdette, Mo. on December 18, 1903 and passed away at his home in Kansas City, Mo., July 14, 1965 at the age of 61 years, 6 months and 26 days. He is survived by one brother, Willard Ashbaugh, Pueblo, Colorado, four nieces and one nephew all of Kansas City, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Edwin Ashbaugh and one sister, Ona Adams. Clyde spent most of his life on a farm near Burdette until the last 18 years when he moved to Kansas City where he was employed by Soil Service Co. at the time of his death. Funeral services were held at the Six Chapel Saturday, July 17, 1965. Burial was in the Burdette Cemetery.

GRANDMA ASHBAUGH DEAD - Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Ashbaugh died at her home west of Burdett, Monday morning, February 28th 1916; aged 71 years, 7 months and 2 days. Elizabeth Ann, daughter of Joseph B. and Nancy Mudd, was born in Bullock county, Kentucky, July 26, 1844. February 27th, 1862 she married J.W. Ashbaugh, them moved to Missouri, February 2nd, 1872. She is the mother of ten children, six sons and four daughters. Three of the daughters are dead: Katie died in infancy in 1891; Mrs. Mary Josephine Chambers in 1900; Mrs. Anna B. Reid in 1912, John, George, Luke, Thomas, Ben, Cleveland and Mrs. Nancy Seeley all live in Bates county except Thomas who lives in Kansas City. Mrs. Ashbaugh and family had lived in Bates county forty-four years. The husband died January 21st last. She was reared in the Catholic Church. She was a kind mother, a good neighbor and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Funeral services for Mrs. Ashbaugh were held from the Burdett church Tuesday, conducted by Rev. Holt, of Liberty, Mo. The remains were laid to rest in the Burdett cemetery.

HARRY ASHBAUGH RITES HELD WED. - Harry Edwin Ashbaugh was born in Bates County near Burdette, Mo. on December 15, 1901 and passed away December 15, 1964 at the age of 62 years, 11 months and 29 days. He was the son of Charles Luke and Minnie Belle Ashbaugh who both preceded him in death. He spent about 37 years in and around Adrian, Mo. working at his plastering trade. He later moved to Kansas City, Mo. to continue working as a plasterer. He retired one year ago. He is survived by a sister, Ona Adams, Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Clyde Ashbaugh, Kansas City, Mo.; and Willard Ashbaugh, Pueblo, Colorado; 1 nephew, 4 nieces, several great nieces and nephews and 1 great great niece and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 16, 1964 at the Six Chapel. Burial was in Burdette Cemetery.

J. W. ASHBAUGH DEAD - Once more the grim reaper has cast his icy blade and called to his reward our friend and neighbor, William Ashbaugh. J.W. Ashbaugh was born Nov. 22nd, 1833, in Nelson county, Ky. and died January 21st, 1916. He met and married Elizabeth Mudd in his native state. To this union ten children were born, six boys and four girls. The only surviving daughter, Mrs. Elmer Seeley, lives near the family home. The boys are Thomas, of Kansas City; John, Ben, George and Luke, of East Boone township, and the youngest son, who lives at home. Uncle Bill, as he was familiarly called, came to West Boone township over 45 yeas ago and endured all the hardships of a pioneer. Though no a member of any church or lodge he was universally esteemed as an honest, upright citizen whose word was as good as his bond. Peace be to his departed spirit. Funeral services were held Saturday at the home. The remains were laid to rest in the Burdett Cemetery.

LAST RITES HELD FOR LULU ASHBAUGH - Lulu Scott Ashbaugh, daughter of Edward and Frances Scott was born near Burdette, Mo. on June 11, 1883 and passed away October 4, 1969 at the Countryside Nursing Home at Butler, Mo. at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 23 days. She was united in marriage to Benedick Ashbaugh on December 24, 1910. She and her husband lived their entire married life near Burdette, Mo. She has spend the last 6 1/2 years at the nursing home in Butler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, on May 21, 1963. She leaves to mourn her passing several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Atkinson Dickey Chapel in Adrian, Mo. Interment in Burdette Cemetery.

MRS. LUKE ASHBAUGH DEAD - Mrs. Charles Luke Ashbaugh, died at the home west of Adrian, Sunday morning, October 20, 1946. Mrs. Ashbaugh, while not in good health, had carried on her usual home activities until the last. Her son, Clyde, arose about four o'clock Sunday morning and found his mother setting in a chair by the stove in which position she had died sometime before. Clyde had not heard his mother during the night. Minnie Belle, daughter of Thomas and Eliza Balgum, was born near Burdett, Missouri, June 15, 1878. In that community, she grew to womanhood and was united in marriage to Charles Luke Ashbaugh at Burdett, January 5, 1896. Her entire lifetime was spent in that community. She is survived by four children, Mrs. Ona Adams and Edwin Ashbaugh of Kansas City, Missouri; Willard Ashbaugh, Pueblo, Colorado and Clyde Ashbaugh, of the home. The husband, Charles Luke Ashbaugh, died January 25, 1946. Four sisters survive, Nannie Puffer, Delta, Colorado; Alice Brown, Adrian; Eva Calhoun, Archie and Hattie Lewis, Greeley, Colorado. There are five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mrs. Ashbaugh was converted and united with the Burdett Baptist church when a young lady. She has always retained her membership in that church. Funeral services for Mrs. Ashbaugh were held from the Burdett Baptist Church, Tuesday afternoon, October 22. Burial was made in the Burdett cemetery by the Creath & Six funeral service.

Robert "Bob" Earl Aston Sr., age 86 of Butler, Missouri died Saturday, March 29, 2008 in Butler. He was born April 5, 1921 to Earl F. and Elizabeth Bryce Aston in Whitaker, Pennsylvania. Bob served his country in World War II in the U.S. Army. He was widely known for making animal characters out of balloons as well as collecting money for the Shrine Circus. Bob is survived by a son, Robert "Biff" Earl Aston Jr. and wife Cheryl of Raymore, Missouri; a daughter, Roberta "Bobbie" Brown and husband Larry of O'Fallon, Missouri; five grandchildren, Lindsey and husband Mark Farrar, Amy and Christopher Jordan and Jason and Kristen Burke; nephews, nieces, cousins and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, James W. Aston; a sister, Earlene Rushe; and his beloved wife Freda in 2004.

He was born January 25, 1922 to Jasper Lee and Edith Belle Lawson Atchison in Archie, Missouri. Leland is survived by his wife, Sally Lurie Atchison of Adrian, Missouri; two sons, Warren Lee Atchison and wife Mary Ann of Independence, Missouri and Robert W. Atchison and wife Cathy of Adrian, Missouri; two daughters, Sherry Hubbard and husband Paul of Adrian, Missouri and Terri Sue Cooper and husband Ed of Raytown, Missouri; 20 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mrs. Lee Atkins Dead - Nettie Odelia Carter was born January 18, 1900 in Wayne County, Missouri, and departed this life November 16, 1934, ate 34 years, 10 months and 28 days. At the early age of 13 she united with the Methodist church at Williamsville, Mo. February 26, 1928 she was married to Lee Atkins of Spruce, Mo., where they lived in wedded happiness. During the year of 1928 she changed her membership to the Methodist church of Spruce, where she was a loyal member and a teacher of a Sunday school class. She leaves to mourn her going, her husband, two daughters, Mary Lee, age 4 years, and Lillie Mae, age 4 days. An aged father and mother, three sisters, Mrs. Anna King, Mrs. Nellie Slaughter, Mrs. Julia West, a foster brother, Walter Carter. In the time she lived in our midst she had made many friends. To know her was to love her. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church at Spruce, November 18. Burial at the Radford cemetery.

Mrs Hannah Atkison, widow of the late "Uncle John" Atkison passed away at an early hour this morning of heart trouble superinduced by old age and grief. Death had been almost hourly expected for many weeks ever since before the death of her husband two months ago. Deceased was in her eightieth year and had been a faithful wife and mother and leaves this world lamented by all who knew her and appreciated her sterling worth of character. She was a tower of strength to her husband and family in these trying pioneer times which she saw in this section. Mrs Atksion was the mother of thirteen children seven of whom died in infancy, those surviving being R. A. Atkison, Mrs J. M Catterlin, Mrs C. W. Rogers, Mrs Geo. Catterlin, Mrs Dr. Risely and Mrs Decatur Smith. It had been the constant desire of Mrs Atkison since the loss of her husband to join him in the spirit world; she longed to be with him and this in a measure is a comfort to the children doubly bereaved in so short a while. The funeral will take place tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon from the family home on South Main Street.

Funeral services were held over the late Uncle John Atkison Thursday afternoon at his residence on South Main Street. There was a very large attendance. The services were very quite and simple being specially so arranged on account of the precarious condition of Mrs. Atkison. Rev. Jones' remarks were most appropriate particularly his allusion to the character of the departed; he came to this county he said at a time "when it tried men's souls." A very handsome floral wreath graced the casket, presented by Judge Levy, a long time friend of Mr. Atkison. At the conclusion of the services at the house, Post 58 GAR took charge of the remains and conducted them to Oak Hill where they were placed in the grave, the ceremonies being witnessed by a large concourse. The solemn rites performed, the ranks closed in again less one more comrade of the few remaining who has passed on to join those gone before. His wife, the faithful helpmeet of nearly sixty years with five daughters, and one son are left; the children being, Mrs D. Smith, Mrs J. M. Catterlin, Mrs Geo. Catterlin, Mrs C. W. Rogers, Mrs Dr Risley and R. A. Atkison, all residents of Butler. The other children all died young. The following is taken from a sketch of the deceased in the Old Settlers's History of Bates County: "John Atkison was born in Kanawha county, West Virginia, November 12, 1815. He lived there until grown, on a farm, and attended school only six months, traveling three miles over a high mountain to and from. His father died when he was twenty years old. his mother then moved to Ohio with a family of seven children and settled in Mercer county. He married Miss Hannah Catterlin June 18, 1840. While living there he was elected and commissioned a Justice of the Peace. After that he was elected captain of a militia company under the existing laws of Ohio and was commissioned by the Governor. Two children were born there. They then moved to Missouri in a two horse wagon in 1844, and settled near Otterville in Cooper County, nine children being born to them while living there. They moved to Bates county, march 18, 1860 settling in Pleasant Gap. Two children were born there making in all 13 children. The fact of coming from a free state to Missouri he was looked on and called a black Republican and Abolitionist. He enlisted in Co. H 7th Cavalry, M. S. M. in 1862 and served about one year in Co. Has first Lieutenant. On account of disability, he was complied to resign. Soon afterward he was appointed captain of a company of home guards for Bates county by Gov. Fletcher, with headquarters at Pleasant Gap. He as elected sheriff in the fall of 1864 and shortly afterward the legislature passed a bill disfranchising all rebels and rebel sympathizers, and declaring all the county offices vacant. Then the Governor appointed him to fill out his unexpired term. In 1866 he was elected again and in all served the people as sheriff four years. He was also ex-officio collector of taxes. Prior to his election as sheriff the first time he was judge of the County court.

HORRIBLY MUTILATED - Charles Axelson, a machinist employed at the Kansas City Boiler works, located on eighth street near Santa Fe in the west bottoms, died at City hospital at 6:15 o'clock last night from injuries received by being run over by a Kansas city, Fort Scott and Memphis switch engine shortly before noon yesterday. Axelson attempted to cross the tracks near the factory where he was employed in the rear of a passing freight train. An engine approaching on an adjoining track from the opposite direction of it. In a moment the wheels had passed over him and both legs were almost severed near the knees. After being attended by the Police Surgeon he was then taken to the City hospital where he died. Deceased was a son-in-law of Dan Cothrien, of Burdette, and the remains were brought here and laid away in the Burdett cemetery. The Odd Fellows of this city attended in a body and performed the ceremonies of the order over the remains. The wife and fatherless child, will receive the watchful care of the fraternity, as well as the sympathy of the community at large.

Virginia Cleo Ayres, age 101 of Butler, Missouri died Saturday, August 12, 2023 at her home. She was born September 27,1921 to Carl Mabbery and Rutha Florida Keeney Hopper in Girard, Kansas. cVirginia, one of four children, grew up in Girard and Wichita, Kansas and had lived in Foster, Missouri before moving to Butler in 1990. She was a homemaker. In May of 1938 she married Lester Cecil Ayres and to this union, two daughters were born. Virginia enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing and gardening. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Lee Ayres Herod of Foster, Missouri; two grandchildren, Tim Herod and Deanna Herod; two nieces, Rosemary Smith and husband Richard of Louisburg, Kansas and Peggy Carpenter of Webb City, Missouri; and a nephew, Leonard Ayres of Leavenworth, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester Ayres on July 12, 1966; a daughter, Phyllis Mae Ayres; a grandson, Bobby Herod; and three siblings, Venita Craig, Georgia Tolliver and Daniel Hopper.
