Alice Lorene Sage, age 75 of Murray, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2008 at her home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born January 29, 1933 to George Washington Stambaugh and Charlotte Emily Ferry McKee in Merwin, Missouri. Alice graduated from high school at Amsterdam, Missouri and from college at Warrensburg, Missouri. She married Harold L. Sage on July 31, 1955 after his return from the armed forces in Korea. They were blessed with three children, Randall, Patrick and Pamela. Alice taught school in Missouri, Illinois and South Carolina. She loved animals and enjoyed volunteer work for S.P.C.A. (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Alice trusted Christ as her Savior at an early age. She served willingly in her church for many years. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Richard, Bill and Preston McKee; and two sisters, Fern Allen and Pauline Polson. She will be missed by her husband, Harold Sage of the home; sons Randall Sage and wife Karen of Bolingbrook, Illinois and Patrick Sage of St. Joseph, Missouri; a daughter, Pamela Sage of Millbrook, Alabama; a brother, Charles McKee and wife Sally of Kansas City, Missouri; two sisters, Bernice Stewart of Andalusia, Illinois and Frances Hockett of Raymore, Missouri and many relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, Missouri. Burial, Scott Cemetery, Amsterdam, Missouri.

Elmer William Sass, 97, Nevada, MO, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2008, at Barone Alzheimer Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness. He was born March 8, 1911, in Bloomington, IL, to Ernest A. Sass and Emily Marie Ploeger Sass. He married Clara Edwards on March 8, 1946, in Ft. Scott, KS, and she preceded him in death on May 2, 2001. Elmer was born and raised in Illinois but grew up in Kendall, KS. He moved to this area as a young man and spent the remainder of his life here. He served in the U. S. Army during WW II in Germany. Elmer made his living as a farmer and also worked at W. F. Norman Corporation. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Nevada. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Moyer and Hazel Lawson, both of Nevada, MO; three grandchildren, Sherry Leo, Nevada, MO, Leona Bastow, Kosovo, and Miranda Lawson, Nevada, MO; two great-grandchildren, Tyson Leo and Hailie Leo, both of Nevada, MO, and one brother, Art Sass, Kansas City, MO. He was preceded in death by his wife Clara and one sister, Elsie Thornburg. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at the Church of Christ in Nevada, MO. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada, MO.

Joseph William Saylor, 70, Sheldon, Mo., died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, due to a tractor accident. He was born July 15, 1936, in Quincy, Ill., to Gilbert E. Saylor and Lillian V. Wardlow Saylor. He married Ann Darting on Oct. 27,1991, in Sheldon, and she survives of the home. Joseph grew up and went to school in Quincy. He joined the U.S. Marines at age 17 and served for three years. He worked for more than 30 years for the Missouri Conservation Department and retired as assistant area manager of the upper Missouri wildlife area in the state of Missouri. He retired in 1991 and has lived in Sheldon the past 15 years. Joseph was a member of the Sheldon Baptist Church and the NRA. Survivors in addition to his wife Ann Darting Saylor; one son, Joseph A. Saylor, Sheldon; two daughters, Pamela Ann Saylor, Kansas City, Mo., and Deborah K. Saylor, Sioux Falls, S.D.; 13 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; his mother, Lillian V. Saylor, Quincy; and one brother, Allen Saylor, St. Louis, Mo. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Gilbert Saylor. Alma Adelaide Schellman, 99, was born August 31, 1909 in the Pleasant Gap, Missouri Township. She was the daughter of Edward and Alma (Hirschi) Hirni. Adelaide passed away quietly at Appleton City Manor Nursing Home in Appleton City, Missouri on December 19, 2008. Almost all of Adelaide's life was spent in Prairie City, Missouri. She attended Rockville Elementary and High School where she graduated Valedictorian of her class in 1926. Adelaide and August "Shelly" Schellman were united in marriage September 2, 1929 in Butler, Missouri. The Schellman's were blessed with three children. They lived on a farm near Prairie City where she was contented being a farmer's wife and a mother. Milking brought her great pleasure and she also enjoyed raising flowers and crocheting gifts for her family. She liked baseball and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals fan. Adelaide cherished the time spent with her family and especially her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was a modest woman who enjoyed the peace and solitude of rural life. She preferred to be quiet and reserved rather than the center of attention. Mrs. Schellman was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Prairie City and had belonged to the Ladies Aid for many years. Preceding Adelaide in death were her parents, her husband, a daughter Joan Schellman, a brother Troy Hirni, two sisters Ruby Watson and Evelyn Schapeler, a grandson Rodney Bracher and a daughter-in-law Fran Schellman. Survivors include a daughter Sandra and husband Leroy Bracher and a son Dane Schellman all of Rockville, Missouri, a brother Leroy Hirni of Anacortes, Washington, a sister-in-law Norma Hirni of Holden, Missouri, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Services at the Zion Lutheran Church in Prairie City, Missouri on Monday, December 22, 2008. Interment at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Prairie City, Missouri.

Elva Katherine Schenker, daughter of Earnest and Crystabell (Money) Wainwright, was born January 18, 1918 in Butler, Missouri. She departed this life December 24, 2007 at Appleton City Manor Nursing Home in Appleton City, Missouri at 89 years of age. Katherine was raised in Taberville, Missouri and spent most of her life in the Rockville, Missouri area. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Prairie City, Missouri where she had attended faithfully. Cecil Schenker and Katherine were united in marriage February 19, 1939 and to this union five children were born. Mrs. Schenker was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Caring for her family was of the utmost importance to her throughout her life. She enjoyed sewing and painting, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Preceding Katherine in death were her parents, her husband, two children Charlotte and Rex Schenker, and a brother Billy Wainwright. Survivors include three children: Bill Schenker and wife Karen of Oswego, Kansas, Kay Werling of Independence, Missouri and Wayne Schenker and wife Lois of Rockville, Missouri, a daughter-in-law Starr Marshall of Rockville, Missouri, eleven grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and many nieces and nephews. SCHILLER, Charles

Died Suddenly - Charles Schiller, aged 58 years, died suddenly while at work in a field on the Stanfill farm in Elkhart township Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Schiller with several other men, were engaged in cutting corn. He became violently ill and within a few minutes was dead. Dr. C. M. Rice of this city, county coroner, was called and after learning the particulars decided an inquest was unnecessary. Mr. Schiller was born February 14, 1872. For some time past he had been a resident of Elkhart township. Surviving him are his wife and four children, all of the home. Mr. Schiller was a brother of John Schiller who was sentenced to the penitentiary in Bates county circuit court at the May term after he had entered a plea of guilty to choking his wife to death in their rooms in this city.

Carol Earlene Schmehl, 32, Route 1, Amoret, died January 25, 1981, at Lake Side Hospital in Kansas City. She was born March 20, 1948, to Earl Park and Juanita May Wymer Schmehl. She was an auditor for the Milgram Company in Kansas City. Survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Schmehl of Amoret; a twin sister, Lorene Joyce Schmehl of Kansas City; two brothers, Larry Gene Schmehl of Amoret, and Oscar Park Schmehl of Adrian. Funeral services were January 28, at the Mangold Chapel in Amsterdam with Rev. Don Hicks officiating. Burial was in Adam Howell Cemetery.

Earl Parks Schmehl, 86, Amoret, Mo., died Friday, June 7, 2002 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, MO. Memorial graveside services were June 10 at the Adam Howell Cemetery near Virginia, Mo. Mr. Schmehl was born March 11, 1916 in St. Louis, Mo. He was adopted by Thomas and Deana Bolhken Schmehl from an orphanage in St. Louis at the age of 2. The family belonged to the Lutheran Church. In the late 1930s he traveled around the United States working different jobs. Returning to the farm, he married Juanita May Wymer on March 11, 1942 on his 27th birthday. They were married 58 years. To this union four children were born. During World War II Mr. Schmehl served in the U. S. Army. In 1951, he bought 10 acres three miles north of Virginia, Mo., and built a home to raise his family. He was a union carpenter and worked in the Kansas City area until he retired. He leaves two sons, Oscar Schmehl and wife Jennifer, Butler, and Larry Schmehl of Amoret; a daughter, Lorene Schmehl, Amoret; a granddaughter, Katie Schmehl, Butler; a brother-in-law, Roy Wymer and wife Dorothy, Lenexa, Kan.; a cousin, Eulela Matthews and husband Clyde, Amoret; and several other cousins, nephews and nieces. Juanita May Schmehl, 77, rural Amoret, Mo., died in her sleep Thursday, June 22, 2000 at her home. Graveside services were June 24 at the Adam Howell Cemetery, rural Amoret. Mrs. Schmehl was born July 16, 1922 in Bates County, Mo., to Emmett and Nora White Wymer. She married Earl Schmehl on March 11, 1942 on Mr. Schmehl's birthday. To this union four children were born, twins Lorene and Larry and Carol and Oscar. She was a homemaker and enjoyed being a wife, mother and grandmother. She loved the quiet and simple life. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Amoret. She leaves her husband of the home; two sons, Larry Schmehl of the home and Oscar Schmehl and wife Jennifer, Butler Mo.; a daughter, Lorene Schmehl of the home; a brother, LeeRoy Wymer and wife Dorothy and a sister, Ruby Hutchens; and a granddaughter, Katie Schmehl. Adrian A. Schnoebelen, eldest child of Roland A. and Laura C. Putthoff Schoebelen, was born September 26, 1923, on a farm east of Montrose. He departed this life on June 9, 2006, at 82 years of age. Adrian received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School and Montrose High School, graduating in 1942. In 1958 he was united in marriage with Roberta Vannoy Blaylock. They bought the farm where he was born and made their home there until 1977 when the moved in Montrose. Adrian enjoyed his gardening and caring for his flowers. Mr. Schnoebelen was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Roberta of the home; one brother, Roland Schnoebelen, Montrose; three sisters, Jane Vogel and Beatrice Cole both of Kansas City and Ruther Rotert of Montrose. Funeral mass was at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montrose, Monday, June 12. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Montrose.

Jearl G. Scisum, age 65 of Nevada, died on Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, at the Nevada Regional Medical Center following a sudden illness. He was born on Feb, 7, 1942, in Nevada to Ray Edward Scism and Nancy M. Biby Scism. On June 10, 1978 he was married to Betty L. Cummins in Nevada and she survives of the home. Jearl was a lifelong resident of Nevada and went to Nevada Schools. Jearl worked in construction for a number of years out of Kansas City and was a member of the Local No. 663 Heavy & Highway Union. He has owned and operated Jearl's Nevada Radiator for the past 30 years. Jearl was a member of the First Baptist Church and BPO Elks No. 564 in Nevada. Survivors in addition to his wife Betty, include four sons, Bob Cummins and his wife Geneva of Nevada, Sean Scism and his wife Carol of Gainesville, Fla., Jearl Brent Scism, Gainesville, Fla., and Jim Scism; granddaughter, Andria "Andy" Cummins, Gravette, Ark.; two sisters Shirley Fae Bear and husband Ralph, Shawnee, Kan., and Sandra Sue Clark and husband Frank, Dalgren, Ill.; four brothers, Dale E. Scism and wife Nancy, Nevada, Hearl L. Scism, Nevada, Ray Dean Scism and wife LuCreta, Nevada, and Larry G. Scism and wife Robin, Nevada, and numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Kelly Scism and Danny Cummins, two brothers, Kenneth D. Scism and an infant brother, Gale DeWayne Scism, Two sisters, Margaret Rae Harless and Beverly Kay Swait. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the First Baptist Church. Edward Scott died at his home in East Boone township, Wednesday, January 17th, 1923, aged 83 years, 1 month and 1 day. Edward Scott was born near Greenfield, Greer county, Illinois, December 16, 1838 the son of Benjamin and Lucinda Scott. His parents were pioneer settlers in that state. Mr. Scott was united in marriage with Miss Frances Edwards, December 16, 1861. To this union were born four children, all of whom are living; viz: Benjamin Scott, of Merwin, Nevora A. Carson, of Chicago, Ill., LeRoy Scott, of Drexel, and Mrs. Lulu b. Ashbaugh, of Adrian. Three grandchildren, Veda, Jewell and Bonnie Scott, also survive him. Mr. Scott was the second child in a family of nine children, four of whom preceded him in death. Mr. Scott united with the Christian church in Illinois in his early manhood, with his wife, who preceded him in death March 4th 1916. Mr. Scott enlisted as a soldier in the Civil war and saw much hard service in his country's cause and was ever loyal to the principles of our government. In his early life he followed the carpenter's trade and in that capacity superintended the building of a number of railway bridges. He came to Missouri many years ago, first locating on a farm near Rich Hill. Forty-six years ago he located on the farm where he died. During the last years of his life he was in very feeble health and was given the tenderest care by his son Roy and wife, with whom he made his home. Mr. Scott was a kind and loving father, an obliging neighbor and a good citizen. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon. Burial was made in the Burdett cemetery.

Mrs. Ellen Marie Hubbard Scott, 26, Rich Hill, died October 7 at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Ks. She was born in Paola, Ks. on October 10, 1954 to Cecil A. and A. Corrine Ellis Hubbard. On June 17, 1974 she married Robert W. Scott at the Virginia Methodist Church. She had lived in Bates County for 24 years, moving to Rich Hill in 1978. Survivors include her husband Robert of the home, two daughters, Angela Christina Scott and Shaunna Michelle Scott, both of the home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil A. Hubbard of Butler, and two brothers, Gary E. Hubbard of Kansas City and John D. Hubbard of Rich Hill. Private services were held October 9 at the Booth-Flexsenhar Funeral Home, Rich Hill. Cremation followed, with interment in the Adam Howell Cemetery, north of Virginia.

Mrs. Ed Scott died at the Scott home, two miles northwest of Burdett, last Saturday; aged 74 years, 2 months and 4 days. Mrs. Scott was born in Macoupin county, Illinois, Jan. 1st, 1862. Her mother died when she was a small child and her father went to the gold fields of California. She and a sister were cared for by an aunt. She was married to Edward Scott December 16, 1861. To this union four children were born, two sons and two daughters. Ben Scott and Mrs. Lula Ashbaugh live in Bates county. Mrs. Vora Carson, in Chicago, and Roy Scott, in Wyoming. Funeral was held from the Burdett church Sunday afternoon.

Orville Theodore "Scotty" Scott, 86, of Nevada, died Friday Aug. 10, 2007, in El Dorado Springs, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Scott was born Jan. 12, 1921, in Carrolton, Mo. to Albert Scott and Ida Jane Burkhart Scott. Mr. Scott grew up in Nevada and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Aleutian Islands. Following the service, he returned to this area and worked at a number of jobs, including the Nevada State Hospital, retiring there in 1983. He was a member of the Elks Lodge for 54 years. He was also a member of the Nevada Seventh Day Adventist Church. Mr. Scott is survived by his wife, Louise, of the home, two daughters, Marsha Sharp, El Dorado Springs and Debbie Brendlinger, Nevada, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Orville Wayne Scott and by a twin sister, Elizabeth Gaddy. Graveside services will be held on Monday Aug. 13, at Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Angela Kay Scotten, 50, the daughter of William Everett and Anna Elizabeth (Hillier) Bailey, was born March 27, 1957, in Nevada, and passed from this life at 4:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at KU Medical Center. Angela attended school in Schell City, one of the graduates of the class of 1975. Angela's education continued through most of her life, having received a bachelor's degree from Pittsburg State University, in Pittsburg, Kan., then attaining her Master's Degree at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. in Community Mental Health Services. She also attained her nurse practitioner's licensure in the State of Kansas. She not only worked as a practicing nurse, but was also the nursing administrator for Heartland Hospital in Nevada, serving in that position for five of the 10 years that she was employed there. Most recently, she had taught psychiatric nursing for eight years at Pittsburg State University. On Sept. 20, 1976, Angela was united in marriage to David Garwood, and to their union two sons were born. She was later married to Richard Scotten on April 13, 1990, in the Bell Chapel in Harrison, Ark., and with this marriage gained two more wonderful sons. Angela was a member of the Harwood Baptist Church, in which she was very active. She was also known to be a very accomplished piano player, and enjoyed canning, making jelly, and especially playing with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband Dick of the home in Walker, four sons, Clayton Garwood, and Brandon Garwood, both of Walker; Carl Scotten and his wife Donna of Stillwell, Kan.; and Doug Scotten and his wife Shelly of Osage Beach, Mo.; her father, Bill Bailey of Schell City; her sister, Bonnie Blakely and her husband Junior, also of Schell City; three grandchildren, Blake Garwood, and Hannah and Alaina Scotten; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Angela was preceded in death by her loving mother, Anna. Funeral services for Angela Kay Scotten were held Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Harwood Baptist Church. Interment was in the Green Mound Cemetery in Harwood, Mo.

Elmer E. Sheely, pioneer resident of the Burdett community, died at his home west of Burdett, Tuesday, October 31, 1939. His age was 78 years, 8 months and 14 days. Elmer Elsworth Sheely was born and grew to manhood in Minnesota. As a young man he came to Bates county and on February 6,1889 was united in marriage to Miss Nannie Ashbaugh. To this union two children were born, a son dying in infancy and a daughter, Mrs. Fern Riley surviving. He also is survived by the widow. With exception of two years spent in Washington, Mr. Sheely had lived in the Burdett neighborhood for 50 years. Funeral services for Mr. Sheely were held from the Burdett Baptist church, Tuesday, November 2. Burial was made in the Burdett cemetery.

Errol was born April 7, 1942, in the Amarugia Lake area in the same home where his mother was born, to parents George M. and Christine Marie (Shipley) Shanks. He graduated from the Drexel R-IV school district, and married Cecilia Jonelle James on August 13, 1961. Errol worked in the glass manufacturing industry for AFG in Spring Hill, Kansas. Errol was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dana L. Shanks and Jay G. Shanks. He is survived by his wife Jonelle, of the home; his children, Richard E. Shanks and wife Sonia of Leavenworth, Kansas, Deborah M. Baker and husband Gene of Marshfield, Missouri, and Ronald D. Shanks and wife Amy of Eudora, Kansas. Errol is also survived by two sisters, Donna Rivers of Columbia, Missouri, and Deanna Armstrong of Springfield, Missouri. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Spc. Joseph Mikeal Baker and wife Tonya, who are the parents of Errol's great-grandson, Landen Mikeal Baker. Additional grandchildren are Sarah Marie Baker, Emilee Janeen Baker, Jonathan Errol Baker, Hannah Michelle Baker, Timothy James Baker, Andrea Dawn Shanks, Alexis Nicole Shanks, Eldon Kyle Shanks, Kolbi Jessica Shanks, and Kyra Jenelle Shanks. Errol also leaves behind numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. As per Errol's wishes, cremation has taken place. Delmar W. (Bill) Shannon, 98, longtime Platte County resident, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2008, at the North Kansas City Hospital. Bill was born August 6, 1909, in Drexel, Mo., to the parents of William Jefferson and Margaret Shannon. He attended a rural grade school near Drexel. Bill was employed by TWA in Kansas City for 35 years before retiring in 1973. Bill was a 50-year member of the Swope Park Masonic Lodge 617 A.F. & A.M. and a member of the Platte Woods United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. Survivors include his wife Veva Salley of the home; two sons, John H. Atkins and wife Holley of Platte County, Thomas G. Atkins and wife Elena of Liberty; one daughter, Susan L. Johnston and husband Jim of Platte County; seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Frank Ola Sherrick, age 87, of Nevada, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at his home, following a lengthy illness. Frank was born June 20, 1920, in Moundville, Mo., to Thomas Alpha Sherrick and Alice Rebecca Greer Sherrick Rutherford. On Dec. 25, 1940, he married Daisy Mae Matthews, in Lamar, Mo., who preceded him in death on March 31, 2006. Frank worked as an interior, exterior house painters contractors for 59 years. He was a member of the 203rd Houn Dawg Regiment of World War II. Frank was an avid fisherman and an excellent marksman who enjoyed hunting. Survivors include his daughter, Mary L. Werst and her husband Floyd, Nevada, Mo.; two sons, Thomas A. Sherrick and his wife Diana, Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Frank E. "Bub" Sherrick, Nevada, Mo.; two grandchildren, Lisa Nicewaner and her husband, Sean, Liberty, Mo., and Shawn Werst and his wife Chanda, Strafford, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Paige Nicewaner and Gavon Worst, and many nieces and nephews. Roy Eugene Shields, 69, Moundville, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, near Osceola, Mo., due to a boating accident. He was born Oct. 24, 1937, in Vernon County, Mo., to Leroy Shields and Waneta May Shieids. Gene married Joann Milburn on Jan. 18, 1963, in Miami, Okla., and she survives of the home. Gene loved fishing with his fishing buddies over in the river at Osceola. He caught the fish, filleted them, and then had a big fish fry. He also loved just giving the fish away to friends. Gene owned and operated Sheldon Grain and Feed for 15 years and raised cattle all his life. He loved his farm and his cattle and took excellent care of both. He loved his border collie, Sam, that rode on his four-wheeler with, him to check cows and whatever. He also had a little dachshund, Maggie, which he truly spoiled. Gene attended Pine Street Baptist Church in Nevada. He also enjoyed eating breakfast with the breakfast bunch on Saturday mornings when he could. You could count on him to help neighbors in the hayfield, just as they helped him. Survivors in addition to his wife Joann of 44 years include, two daughters, Cindy Hollinger, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Camie Schulze and her husband Kerry, Moundville; five grandchildren, Brittany Hollinger and Hilary Hollinger, both of Lees Summit, Justin Schulze, Carly Schulze and Kelsey Schulze, all of Moundville; two great-grandchildren, Danion and Adalyn Hoilinger, both of Lees Summit; one sister, Argie Hickman and her husband Bill, Deerfield; one sister-in-law and her husband, Bonnie and Dale Pracht. Shreveport, La.; one brother-in-law and his wife, Walter and Jean Milburn, Grain Valley, Mo.; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was born July 16, 1909, in Helena, Okla., to Samuel Wayne Hill and Bessie Ethridge Hill. She married Raymond Chester Shouse on Aug. 3, 1929, in Nevada. He preceded her in death on March 22, 1996. Opal was born in Oklahoma and moved to the Taberville area as a child and resided in this area the rest of her life. She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and an avid floral gardener. Survivors include two sons, Cecil and Eddie Shouse, of Rich Hill; one daughter, Kay Henley, Nevada; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lorene Davis, Humansville. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Bonnie May Shouse. Funeral services Saturday, Jan. 13, at Ferry Funeral Home. Interment was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Wayne Haskell Shouse, 79, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at his home near Schell City, after a long illness. He was born to Roy Haskell Shouse and Bessie Violet Hill Shouse on the family farm in the rural Schell City area on Feb. 14, 1929. Wayne was united in marriage to Ruby Phyllis Williams on May 31, 1952. To this union eight children were born. Wayne retired from Ford Motor Company in Claycomo, in 1974. They moved back to the family farm where Wayne enjoyed fox, coon, rabbit and deer hunting, raising cattle and quarter horses. He enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids and great-granddaughters. He was a member of Pape Christian Church. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Wayne is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of the home; his children: David and Gail, Blue Springs, Mark, Schell City, Kathy Swopes, Springfield, Guy and Dee, El Dorado Springs, Kevin, Collins, Karen, Springfield, Scott, El Dorado Springs, Kris and Lindell Marshall, Schell City; his father-in-law, Raymond Williams, El Dorado Springs; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services were held Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Hackleman Chapel. Burial followed in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

She then married Thomas M. Simpson November 17, 1977 in Butler, MO. He died December 16, 2004. Mrs. Simpson came to Vernon County at a young age. She was raised and went to school in Bronaugh, MO. She worked for Key Work Clothes in Nevada, MO, for 25 years until her retirement. She was known for her quilting of over 300 quilts. Mrs. Simpson was a Methodist. Survivors include, three grandchildren, Jim Hartzfeld and wife Jan, Atlanta, GA, Kim McNeley and husband David, Kansas City, MO and Kendall Hartzfeld, Nevada, MO; four great-grandchildren, Grant McNeley, Jillian Hartzfeld, Carlin McNeley and Kenneth Hartzfeld; one daughter-in-law, Nola Hartzfeld; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, both of her husbands, one son, Kenneth Ray Hartzfeld, and two brothers, Kenneth Young and George Young. George Washington Simpson died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lina Crabtree, near Altona, June 1, 1932; aged 78 years, 3 months and 20 days. Mr. Simpson was born in Kentucky, February 21, 1854. In 1875 he united in marriage with Sallie Inabrit. To this union six children were born, all preceded him in death except Mrs. Crabtree. His wife preceded him in death in 1889. Besides his daughter he is survived by five grandchildren. He was converted in early life and united with the Methodist Church in Illinois, later he united with the Baptist Church and died in that faith. He was a kind and loving husband, father and friend. Funeral services for Mr. Simpson were held Thursday afternoon, June 2, from the Altona Baptist church. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery by Creath & Six, funeral directors.

Jesse D. Six died at his home in Adrian, Friday night, August 3rd, 1906, after a lingering illness of tuberculosis; aged 33 years and 11 months. Deceased was born in Newton Co., Arkansas, September 3rd, 1872, his parents moved to Bates county, Mo., when Jesse was a small boy and he grew to manhood in this county. He was united in marriage with Alice A. Hunt January 1st, 1896, his wife died Sept. 30th, 1899, leaving one son aged 1 year. Few men endured more of affliction than Jesse Six. Shortly after his wife died he was stricken with disease and lingered for months and in fact never regained his vigor. He was always an obliging and courteous gentleman, industrious and honest. A son, mother, brother and sister are left to mourn his death and in their great affliction they have the deep sympathy of a wide circle of friends. Funeral services were held from the home Sunday morning, conducted by Rev. George Carter and the body buried in the Burdett cemetery.

Louise Melvina Harris was born September 29, 1840, in Warren county Indiana. She departed from this life November 26, 1929 at Fort Scott Kansas, at the age of 89 years, 1 month and 28 days. She was united in marriage with Jesse David Six on July 7, 1851, in West Lebanon, Warren county, Indiana. Of their marriage seven children were born, of which two survive. The family came to Bates county, Missouri in the early seventies, and settled near Burdett, where Mr. Six died February 9, 1883. A few years later Mrs. Six left her home near Burdett to make her home with her children, and for twenty years made her home with her daughter, but owning to her daughter's poor health, her son has looked after their mother for the last five years. Mrs. Six was a member of the Friends Church of Edgewood. The services were held at the home of her daughter in East Boone township, burial was made in the Burdett cemetery. Surviving are her two children, D. W. Six of Bush City, Kansas and Mrs. J. E. Hunt of Adrian, three grandchildren, C. A. C. Six of Adrian, O. W. Hunt of Ponca City, Okla., and Mrs. B. M. Robinson of Kansas City, two great grandchildren, Geo. Jesse Six and Donald Morris Robinson.

He was very active in Boy Scouts and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. They continued to live in that town for a while, later moving to a farm in Bates County, where they resided for many years. After an illness over a long period of time, she was released from her suffering on June 28, 1944. She leaves to morns her passing away the husband , Albert Smith, her companion of over fifty years, two daughters, Mrs. Maggie Davis, Rich Hill, Missouri, Mrs. Della Robinson, Kansas City, Kansas, five sons Clark Smith, Butler, Missouri, Joe Smith, Adrian, Missouri, Roy Smith, Kansas City, Kansas, Woody Smith, Independence, Missouri, Robert Smith, Butler, Missouri and a number of grandchildren. A son, Ellis Smith passed away in 1939, and a daughter, Christina Davis in 1931. Funeral services were conducted at Culver Underwood Funeral Parlors, Butler, Missouri. Edna Blanche Phillips Smith, 91, formerly of Bronaugh, MO, died Thursday, August 26, 2004 at Moore-Few Care Center, Nevada, MO. She was born January 11, 1913 to George Amos Phillips and Fannie Shaddok Phillips. She was united in marriage to Ralph "Smitty" Smith on February 25, 1933 in Ft. Scott, KS. He preceded her in death on April 5, 1998. They had celebrated 66 years of marriage.Edna was born near Hume, MO, and was a lifelong resident of this area, living in Hume, Metz, and later Bronaugh. She was the oldest of seven children, attended Brush College Country School to the fifth grade when she was needed at home to care for an ailing stepmother and six siblings. For 23 years she worked with her husband at the Metz School as custodian as well as at the Metz Bank. She later did paper hanging, cleaning, and childcare in the Metz area. She attended the Metz Christian Church. In 1983 Mrs. Smith left Metz moving to Bronaugh to be nearer her family. Survivors include one daughter, Opal Wycoff of Moundville, MO; three sons, Ralph "Bud" Smith of Colorado, Philip Smith, Ft. Scott, KS, Donald Smith, Bronaugh, MO, 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, William "Bill" Phillips, Monroe, WA, and several nieces, nephews, and relatives. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Richard Smith and Paul Smith, her parents; four brothers, Dick, George, Robert and John Phillips; two sisters, Viola Hopkins and Marie Key, and one daughter-in-law Judy. Her Lord and Savior called Shirley Bernice Smith home Friday, February 29, 2008, in the presence of her loving family. Shirley was 71 years old, daughter of Otha and Lois Moles, of Adrian, Mo. She was united in marriage in September of 1953 to Dale Smith, and blessed with three daughters. The couple lived in Olathe, Kan., for 20 years before returning to the family farm in the Burdette community west of Adrian, Mo. They were dedicated members of the Drexel First Baptist Church, and involved with Missourians on Mission. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her grandson Luke Wegner; brothers, Lester and Jack Moles, and sister Geraldine Scott. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dale; daughters Kathy (Dick) Wegner, Ronda (Lindsey) Walters, and Sandy (Dale) VanSlyke; grandchildren Leah (Nate) Theiss, Bonnie (Billy) Zehr, Audrey (Tanner) Welch, Matt Wegner, Jacob VanSlyke, Sam Walters, Jared Wegner, Jeffery VanSlyke, Joshua VanSlyke, Jaime VanSlyke, and great granddaughter Julia Zehr. William Elmer Smith, Jr., the son of Goldie (Likens) and William E. Smith Sr., was born on June 2, 1935 in Everton, Missouri. He passed away at this home in Rockville, Missouri on November 10, 2007 at the age of 72 years. Jr. served his country in the Army for a short period of time as a peace keeper. He was married to Alta Swineheart in 1960. To this union four children were born: Bill, Jesse, Rhonda and Angela. In 1969 he married Judy Daniels and to this union three children were born: Gail, Joe and Pete. In 2002 Junior married Sharon Fisher. Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Billy Smith, one sister Irene Brown, one son Bill Smith and ex-wives Alta and Judy Smith. He is survived by his children Jesse and Kim of Oklahoma, Rhonda Fitzpatrick and Angela Smith, both of Oklahoma, Gail and Rick Lewis of Arizona, Joe and Terry of Rockville, Missouri and Pete and Tina of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Junior worked in a tire factory in Kansas City for many years. After that Junior and his wife Judy ran the Rockville Bar from 1976 to 1996. He was a loving father, grandfather and very dear friend. He was a hunter, fisherman and loved trapping. He spent most of his last years in the river bottoms in Rockville. He loved talking about old times with his friends. He had many good times with his friends John Rector, Larry Barcus, Terry McNerny, Dean Huffman and John Roseman. He had lots of stories to tell and loved sitting on the 4 wheeler being "boss of everyone" when he needed things done. He will be very dearly missed by all. He went to rest in the land of the deer and the lake full of fish. This was his dream. He has left lots of fun memories with his family and friends.

Lloyd W. Snethen, son of Emmett and Ruby (Ginter) Snethen, was born on November 29, 1942 in Johnson City, Missouri. He spent nearly all of his life in Montrose except from 1964 to 1967 when he served in the armed forces at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas. He was a dedicated member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montrose, Missouri. Lloyd passed away June 23, 2008 in Clinton, Missouri at age 65. He was united in marriage to Donna Goth on February 15, 1969 at Immaculate Conception, and to this union three children were born. Lloyd's life was centered around his family and his work, especially the people he worked for at Hi Way Auto Service, the garage his father owned for more than 50 years. His three grandsons were his pride and joy. Preceding Lloyd in death were his parents Emmett and Ruby Snethen. Survivors include his wife Donna of the home; son Mike and wife Tanya Snethen of Willard, Missouri; son Chris and wife Jennifer Snethen of St. Louis, Missouri; and daughter Kim and husband Sean Hayes of St. Louis, Missouri; three grandsons, Terry and Nick Snethen of Willard, Missouri and Aidan Snethen of St. Louis, Missouri; one aunt Lizzie Parks of Fort Scott, Kansas; and one uncle Louis (Everleigh) and wife Agnes Snethen of Baker, Louisiana. Funeral services for Claude T. Snodgrass, 69, north of Spruce, who died Mar. 10 at his home, were held Mar 13 at the Spruce Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the Radford Cemetery west of Spruce where lies his daughter, who died in infancy, parents and a brother, Walter. Claude T. Snodgrass, the son of Joseph Lee and Laura Ann Radford Snodgrass, was born near Spruce on Jan. 20, 1890. On Sept. 7, 1922, he married Cora Alice Prier. Mr. Snodgrass, who spent his entire life in Bates County, had engaged in farming until his health declined. His wife was hospitalized in Butler when she became uneasy about him. Her sister, Mrs. Anna Radford and daughter, Mrs. Wesley Burns, and Arthur Berrier investigated and found he had quietly slipped away in his sleep. In early life he united with the Spruce Presbyterian Church in which he was an elder and a most active and conscientious member. He was a daily reader of the Bible which he had read through 2 or 3 times. He was a veteran of World War I. Surviving are his wife, Cora, a correspondent from Spruce for The Clinton Eye and The Herald-Tidings; a sister, Mrs. Fern Gardus, Butler; three brothers, Fred A., Montrose, John, Butler, and Orville, Noel, Mo.; a number of nieces, nephews, other realtives and many friends.

Local Newspaper Correspondent Dies - Mrs. Cora Alice Snodgrass was born Aug. 17, 1897 in Bates County, Mo., the daughter of Corrie Bell Hall and Alva Allen Prier. At 62 years of age she died Apr. 22 in her sleep at her home in Butler, Mo. She had resided her lifetime in Bates County. She married Claude Snodgrass on Sept. 7, 1922. To this union a daughter, Cora Alice, was born who died in infancy. Mrs. Snodgrass was united with the Spruce Presbyterian Church and kept that faith until the last. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude, in March 1959, her father, A. A. Prier, her mother, when a young girl, and a sister, Mrs. Marie Lee. She is survived by her stepmother, Lelia Prier, Butler; two sisters, Mrs. Asa Radford, Butler, and Mrs. Elmer Jacobs, Drexel, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Sunday, Apr. 24, at Spruce Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the Radford cemetery. Mrs. Snodgrass has long been a valued correspondent of The Clinton Eye and The Urich Herald-Montrose Tidings from Spruce community even since she had moved into Butler. She will be missed, indeed.

Mrs. W. O. Snodgrass died at her home a short distance northwest of Spruce Sunday evening, August 10. Nellie Albright Jordon was born in Madison county, Kentucky, March 8, 1888. From there she moved to Vernon county in January 1893. When 14 years of age she united with the Christian church of which she was a consistent member until a few months ago when she joined the Spruce Presbyterian church. She was actively identified with the various branches of the church to which she belonged and her life was an inspiration to better things to those about her. She was never sparing of her talent in work for the Master. Before her marriage to W. O. Snodgrass, which took place Dec 9, 1918, she was one of Bates county's most popular school teachers. Funeral services conducted at the home Monday, August 11, and the remains laid to rest in the Radford cemetery.

PROMINENT CITIZEN DEAD - Austin Snow died at his home in Grand River township, Tuesday, December 3, 1918, of pneumonia; aged 35 years, 10 months and 24 days. Mr. Snow was a good citizen and his death will be mourned by a wide circle of friends. He was a good business man and square in his dealings. A wife, parents and several brothers and two sisters survive him. These have the sympathy of the entire community. Funeral for Mr. Snow was held Tuesday, burial made in the Altona cemetery.

He was born May 12, 1911, in Hume, Mo., the son of Clyde and Jane Reynolds Speakes. He graduated from Hume High School and attened Pittsburg State Teacher's College. He married Mary Rebecca Bell, September 1933, at Mound City, Kan. She receded him in death on June 16, 2004. Vernon was a member of the United Methodist Church, in Prescott, Kan., where he taught Sunday School for a number of years. He was a lifetime member of the State & National Grange, the Republican Committee, past director at the Prescott State Bank and The REA Board; past president of Farm Bureau and Friendship Villa. Vernon helped many students with scholarships though the years. He was preceded in death also by his parents and three sisters, Ruby, Ruth and Helen. Survivors include several nieces and nephews and numerous friends. Services will be held Monday, June 2, at the Prescott United Methodist Church. Interment will be held in Littell Cemetery. Kenneth E. Spratt, 98, of Hume, Missouri, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at the Prescott Country View Nursing Home, Prescott, Kansas. He was born June 10, 1910 in Drexel, Missouri, the son of Walter and Nancy Evans Spratt. He married Minnie E. McKibben on November 10, 1929 at Hume, Missouri. She preceded him in death on July 21, 2001. He was a farmer and also drove a school bus for the Hume Schools. Kenneth was a member of the Hume Christian Church, the Grange and former mayor of Hume. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Lee and husband, J. R. of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Lila Renken and husband, Don of Phillipsburg, Missouri; nine grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; seven great great granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. Kenneth was a beloved father and grandfather and known to many as a good neighbor and friend. Services will be held Saturday, June 21, 2008 at the Hume Christian Church, Hume, MO. Interment will be the Hume Cemetery.

Wanda Jean Stafford, 83, Nevada, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, at Christian Healthcare in Nevada following a brief illness. She was born May 20, 1924, in Weaubleau, Iowa, to Herbert and Marie Smith. She married Gail Stafford on May 9, 1942, in Mexico, Mo., and he preceded her in death on March 13, 1995. Wanda lived in California for a number of years before moving to Nevada in 1961. She was baptized in the Community Christian Church in Nevada on May 13, 2001. She was a former member of the Nevada Eagles Lodge. Wanda worked at the Nevada State Hospital from 1961 until her retirement in 1981. Survivors include one daughter, Dixie Thomas and her husband Chuck, Mt. Vernon, Mo.; two sons, Jerry Stafford and his wife Linda, Nevada, and John Stafford and his fiance Jana Mather, Nevada; 16 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, and one sister, Donna Marland and her husband Elmer, Davenport, Iowa. In addition to her husband Gail, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Gaila Schooley; one son, Rick Stafford, one brother, Keith Hank, and one sister, Helen Greenhagen. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in National Cemetery, Fort Scott, Kan.

Albert Freeman Stanfill, the only son of the late Oliver and Virginia Stanfill was born at Virginia, Mo., June 19th 1893, and departed this life at his home, seven and one half miles southeast of Amsterdam, Mo., Thursday, October 27, at 2 p.m. at the age of 62 years 4 months and 8 days. Freeman Stanfill was united in marriage March 20th, 1919, to Carrie Towers, who has been his devoted wife for the past 42 years, and who was by his side when he departed this life. To this union were born five children. Preceding him in death are his parents, daughter Fern, who died in infancy, one sister Maybelle Wilson, and a grandson, Charles Edward Stanfill who died in infancy. The surviving children are; Mrs. W. M. Bagby, Adrian, Mo.; Carl Walton Stanfill, Amoret, Mo.; Mrs. R. R. Longworth, Butler, Mo.; Charles Walter Stanfill, Amsterdam, Mo.; ten grandchildren, one sister Mrs. Annie Reeves, one nephew, and two nieces. Early in life Free Stanfill was converted and united with the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and was an active member attending regular services, until it disbanded. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge No. 141 of Amsterdam, Mo., and lived by the teachings of that order. He spent his entire life in Elkhart township, where he toiled as a successful farmer, for whatsoever his hands found to do he did with all his might. He was at the height of his glory when he was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He commanded the esteem of his many friends and to those who knew him best, loved him most. To his wife and children, he has left the sweet memory of a loving husband, and a devoted father, in which they can find much consolation and much to be cherished in pride and gratitude. The funeral services were held in the Amsterdam Methodist Church in the presence of a large concourse of friends. The interment was at Adam Howell cemetery with Masonic rites at the graveside.

Carl Walton Stanfill, a lifelong resident engaged in farming in Elkhart township passed away at his lifetime home on Nov. 18, 1988. He was born April 9, 1919, at his grandparents home one mile to the southwest, the second child of Carrie Ann Towers and Albert Freeman Stanfill. He attended nearby Concord School through the eight grade. In Olathe, Kan., on Jan. 18, 1938 he was married to Francile Ruddell. To this union were born four children, Carl and Freeman of Amoret, Fern Nelson of Amsterdam and Gloria Huebert of Boonville, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Carrie Fern Stanfill, and one grandchild, Greg Nelson. He leaves one brother, Walter Stanfill of Amsterdam; two sisters, Fay Bagby of Adrian and Lee Longworth of rural Butler and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Stanfill became members of Amsterdam United Methodist Church on March 29, 1959. He was raised a Master Mason in Amsterdam lodge No. 141 on Dec. 23, 1947. He joined Kansas City Valley Scottish Rite in the fall of 1973. He became a Noble of Ararat Temple in 1974. He was a charter member of Bates County Shrine Club. In 1985 Mr. Stanfill and Walter Stanfill shared the privilege of having the Shrine Summer Ceremonial named in their honor. He was a Charter Member of Bates County Elks Lodge No. 2653. For years he belonged to various Tennessee Walking Horse organizations, and has immensely enjoyed riding, training and showing walking horses the last 35 years. The houseful of trophies and ribbons he won including the world championship at Shelbyville, Tenn., and friends he made over the years attest to his showmanship and extraordinary character. The funeral was held Nov. 20 at the Underwood-Steinbeck-Schowengerdt Chapel in Butler. Burial in the Adam Howell Cemetery near Butler.

Charles Walter Stanfill, 70, Amsterdam, Mo., died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998 at the Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, MO. Services were held Oct. 4 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler. Burial in Adam Howell Cemetery, Virginia, Mo. Mr. Stanfill was born Jan. 21, 1928 in Amsterdam, Mo., to Albert Freeman and Carrie Towers Stanfill. One of five children in the family, he was a lifelong resident of Bates County, Mo. He attended Concord Grade School and Amsterdam High School and continued his education at Kansas State University, Manhatten, Kan. He served in the Army during World War II. On April 5, 1948 he married Florence Wagner and to this union three children were born. He retired from farming in 1993, an agricultural career in which he was successful at row cropping and raising cattle and hogs. He was an active member of the Amsterdam Methodist Church, the Royal Arch Masons, Scottish Rite and Ararat Shrine, all of Kansas City, the Crescent Hill Chapter No. 127 O.E.S., and the Amsterdam Masonic Lodge No. 141 AF & AM, Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Rita Stanfill of the home; a grandson, James Stanfill, Lee's Summit, Mo.; two sisters, Fay Bagby, Adrian, Mo., and Lee Longworth, Butler. He was preceded in death by his parents, a stillborn son, Charles Edward, a brother, Walton, and an infant sister, Fern.

Florence R. Stanfill, 77, Butler, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. Services were Jan. 26 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler. Burial in Adam Howell Cemetery, Virginia, Mo. Mrs. Stanfill was born April 17, 1928 in Butler, Mo., to Edward Joseph and Rhoda Belle McGuire Wagner. One of four children, she grew up in Bates County, attending grade school in Amoret and Amsterdam. She moved to Butler her senior year and graduated with the class of 1946 from Butler High School and later attended business school in Kansas City, Mo. On April 5, 1948 she married Charles Walter Stanfill in Butler and to this union three children were born. Florence worked as a homemaker as well as a bookkeeper for B. C. Christopher Stocks. She was a member of the Amsterdam Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star, Crescent Hill Chapter No. 127 in Adrian, Mo. Florence enjoyed fishing, traveling, reading novels and watching "Touched by an Angel" on television. Her grandchildren were very important to her. Her favorite scripture, found in John 14:1-4 gave her words of comfort when she needed them. She will be remembered as a kind and gentle lady that could make anyone smile with her friendly personality. Florence Stanfill is survived by one son, John Stanfill and wife Lucy, Liberty, Mo.; two brothers, Bill Wagner and wife Peggy, Grain Valley, Mo., and Donald Wagner, Horton, mo.; one sister, Shirley Little and husband Jerry, Las Vegas, Nev.; four grandchildren, James Stanfill, Alex Macias, Mayela Macias and Gerardo Macias; and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Walter; one son, Charles Stanfill; and daughter, Rita Stanfill.

Oliver W. Stanfill died at his home in Amsterdam, Friday, September 12, 1919, at the age of 62. He was born in Bath county, Ky., February 14, 1857, and with his father and mother came to Missouri in 1858, first settling in Jackson county. The famous battle of Westport was fought on the ground where he, as a boy, played and labored. After the Civil War the Stanfills moved to Cass county and later to Bates county where they made their permanent home. He was married November 20, 1883, to Miss Virginia McGuire. To this union three children were born May wife of James Wilson, Amsterdam; Annie, wife of Milton Reeves, Nyhart, and Albert Freeman Standfill, who resides on the old home farm. Mr. Stanfill was converted in the spring of 1918 at the Concord school house and was baptized by Rev. J. A. Riney into the fellowship of the Mt. Vernon Baptist church, of which he was a member at the time of his death. Mr. Stanfill leaves a wife, two daughters, one son and a brother an sister to mourn his death, as well as a large number of friends. Funeral services were conducted at the family home in Amsterdam, Saturday, and burial in the Adam Howell cemetery.

Rita Mae Stanfill - Rita Mae Stanfill, 51, Amsterdam, Mo., died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Mo. Services were Nov. 12 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler. Burial in Adam Howell Cemetery, Virginia, Mo. Rita Mae was born April 30, 1951 in Butler, Mo., to Charles Walter and Florence Rosalie Wagner Stanfill. One of two children, she was raised on a farm east of the Amsterdam community. She attended school at the Amsterdam and Passaic schools. She dedication over 30 years of service to the Sheltered Workshop, now called Bates County Industries. She was a member of the Amsterdam Methodist Church. She was a people person and enjoyed visiting with anyone who would lend an ear. Her hobbies included fishing, traveling, bowling and listening to country-western music. She loved football, especially the Chiefs; going to a Royals game with her brother was another of her favorite things. She enjoyed autumn time of the year, but her favorite time was Christmas. Rita had been to a wiener roast the evening of her passing at Carl Stanfill's and had a wonderful time. She leaves her mother of Amsterdam; a brother, John Stanfill, Topeka, Kan.; a nephew, James Stanfill, Lee's Summit, Mo.; several uncles, aunts and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her father, and an infant brother, Charles Stanfill.

STANLEY, Zachariah

The death of Mr. Zachariah Stanley on Friday, last, May 6, 1881, was as sad as it was sudden. In company with Mr. M.A. Burkhart and a Mr. Taber, Mr. Stanley went down to Mound Branch to fish. About 2 o'clock p.m. a severe rain storm came up which caught the three gentlemen on the creek. Messrs. Burkhart and Taber took shelter under the trunk of a fallen tree, while Mr. Stanley took shelter under a large tree. The bolt of lightning struck the top of the tree and ran down till it came within a few feet of the ground, when it left the tree and entered the body of the deceased, tearing his clothing and killing him instantly. The funeral took place on Sunday and was among the largest ever seen in this city. Mr. Stanley was one of the honored Mexican veterans who enlisted under Colonel Dan Morrison in 1846. He belonged to no church or society but endeavored to live the life of a strictly honorable and honest man. In the sad death of Mr. Stanley Butler and Bates County has lost a substantial and beloved citizen.

Hannah Louella Stark, age 93 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at Willow Lane Nursing Center in Butler. She was born January 13, 1916 to William Elmer and Louella Jackson Sims in Virginia, Missouri. Hannah is survived by three sons, Jerry Hedger and wife Barbara of Buckner, Missouri, Jack Hedger and wife Pam of Butler, Missouri and Dwight Hedger of Pensacola, Florida; a daughter, Connie Shaffer of Raymore, Missouri; one sister, Betty Robey of Butler, Missouri; a stepdaughter, Pauline Hedger Evans of Mountain Home, Arkansas; seven grandchildren, Carol Johnson, Scott Hedger, Mark Hedger, Junior Munsterman, Todd Hedger, Jill Koenen and Travis Hedger; and six great-grandchildren, Jesse, Jamie, Ethan, Emmalee, DeLainie and Dawson. She was born on August 19, 1903 in Bates county, Mo., the daughter of Annie Hussey and John Hedger. She was baptized and accepted Christ as her savior early in life. She was united in marriage to Willie Stark on April 26, 1923 at Butler, Mo., and to this union survived by her husband of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Loraine Bitner, Butler, Mrs. Faye Webber of Amoret, Mo., one son, Bud Stark of Waterford, Mich.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; also one sister, Estelle Browning of Butler. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 17 from the Underwood-Steinbeck Chapel in Butler. Interment was made in Adam Howell Cemetery.

Schelly Trego Steelman, 37, Washington, D.C., died suddenly on Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, at her home. Schelly was born on Oct. 21, 1968, in Fort Polk, La. She was reared in Nevada, Mo., by her great-grandmother, Lola Trego, and Carol and Tony Urner. She married Joseph Steelman in 1990. Schelly graduated from Nevada High School in 1985 and attended Smith College in Northampton, Mass., where she studied history and political philosophy. She moved to Washington, D.C., to work for presidential candidate Jack Kemp in 1988. She also worked for the National Archives. She was a gourmet cook and worked in the catering and restaurant industry in Washington, D.C., for a time. An author, she was a columnist for Epicsff.com, and her short stories have appeared in Runesmag.com. She had published two books, including "The Green Temple," a fantasy, with ArcheBooks Publishing, and recently received an advance for her third book. She attended the Episcopal Church in Alexandria, Va., and gave tours of its historic buildings. She is survived by her husband, Joe; and her son, Joseph Anthony, of the home; Carol and Tony Urner; and her grandmother, Nancy Zaring of Nevada; an uncle, Steve Zaring, Fort Collins, Colo.; and two aunts, Kathleen Berry, Walker, and June Barttium, Independence, Mo.; and numerous other relatives. Following cremation, a private service was held in Washington, D.C. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, in the Nevada Public Library community room.

STENSTROM, Carl Russell

Carl Russell Stenstrom , 81, Adrian, MO, died Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at Research Medical Center, Kansas City, MO. Funeral services Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, MO. Graveside services Wednesday, April 23 at the Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. Carl was born January 8, 1927 in Des Moines, IA, the son of Russell and Eleanor (Sterud) Stenstrom. He grew up in Des Moines, graduating from Roosevelt High School. After graduation, Carl enlisted in the U. S. Army, entering the service as an infantry private at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. He earned the honor of Scout Marksman of US Rifle M-1 SS 173 Division. He applied and received admittance into Officer Candidate School and in October, 1945 entered active duty as a 2nd Lieutenant, commanding unit 1542 of the 18th Regiment. His unit was sent to Sackenheim, Germany where he earned the American Theatre Ribbon, EAME Ribbon, Army of Occupation Medal, an Overseas Service Bar and a Victory Medal. Carl was honorably discharged from active duty on December 31, 1946 at Ft. Sheridan, IL. Upon returning to civilian life, Carl entered college at Iowa State University, studying architecture. He later transferred to the University of Kansas where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Architecture. While at KU, Carl met Betty Lee Skinner. They were married on November 24, 1950. The Korean Conflict brought a reactivation of Carl's military status and he was assigned as a Captain to the 406th Reserve Infantry Division in Kansas City, MO. The unit did not see military service in Korea. For most of their married lives, Carl and Betty lived in the Kansas City area in a home designed and constructed by Carl. They raised four children. Throughout his adult years, Carl was a passionate architect, following the examples of Frank Lloyd Wright. He always encouraged his children to find their God given talents and use them to their fullest. He was a very active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Grandview serving as choir director, organist, and older youth Sunday School teacher. He co-sponsored the Kid's Day Out program for non-churched children of the area. Of the many activities in Carl's life, he enjoyed boating, camping, and flying the most and was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. After a couple of strokes and declining health, Carl and Betty moved to Adrian, MO where he was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Butler and recently joined VFW Post 1935 in Adrian. Carl was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Betty, of the home; three sons, Paul Russell Stenstrom and his wife, Sharon, Palm Harbor, FL; David Lee Stenstrom and his wife, Maxine, Pine Mountain Club, CA and John Eric Stenstrom, Kansas City, MO; one daughter, Karin Elizabeth Stenstrom Lentz and her husband, Duane, Adrian, MO; one brother, Jerry Stenstrom and his wife, Ann, Des Moines, IA and six granddaughters.

STEPHENS, Clarence E.

Clarence Edward Stephans, was born Dec. 3, 1926 in Joplin, Mo., the son of Elijah G. and Minnie Mary Ellen (Mitts) Stephens. He passed away Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at the Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler, at the age of 78. Clarence was a graduate of Rich Hill High school class of 1945. He served in World War II in Italy with the Blue Devils, Headquarters Company 88 Infantry Division. He married Sandra Jean McCray on Feb. 6, 1962, at the Blue Ridge Methodist Church of Raytown, Mo. Clarence retired on June 26, 1987, from Ford Motor Company at Claycaomo, Mo., where he had worked for 30 years. He was a member of UAW Local 249. He attended church at the Rich Hill United Methodist Church. Clarence loved to tend to his yard and garden. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Carl and Robert Stephens. Clarence is survived by his wife, Jean Stephans of the home; one daughter, Connie Howell and husband Paul, Rich Hill; one son, Greg Stephens and wife Joyce, Nevada; two granddaughters, Angie Ducharme, Nevada, Kelly Ducharme and husband Preston, Nevada; four great-grandchildren, Jeweliah, Ethan, Edwin, and Breian Ducharme; and one nephew, Robert Stephans, Harrisonville, Mo. Services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Heauser Funeral Home, Rich Hill. Interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Rich Hill, Mo.

Frank S. Stephenson, son of John and Drusilla Stephenson, was born near Haynesville, Mo., July 13, 1871. While yet a small child he came with his parents to Bates county, locating on a farm three and one half mile south of Appleton City. They lived in this location for ten years, then moved to what is known as the "Stephenson Farm," near the Round Prairie Baptist Church. Here he grew to manhood. Soon after attaining manhood he returned to Clay county where the major part of his business life was spent. In 1919 he came to Appleton City to make his home with his sister, Miss Ethel. While yet young in years he gave his heart to his Creator and ever lived the consistent life of Christianity. After making his home in Appleton City he united with the Methodist Episcopal church and was a regular attendant at its services. On Sunday evening, February 28, being 65 years, 7 months and 15 days of age, he passed peacefully into the Great and Glorious Beyond to be with his Maker, whom he loved and served. He leaves here one sister, Miss Ethel, all that is left of a family of nine children, a number of nieces and nephews to whom he was ever a wise and faithful counselor, and a host of warm and loyal friends. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, March 6 at the First M.E. Church, after which the body was taken to Round Prairie Baptist Church where a short service was held, and interment made in the nearby cemetery.

Gertie Maude Stephenson was born Jan. 17, 1882. Died December 14, 1918, aged 36 years, 10 months and 27 days. She was converted in girlhood and lived a consistent Christian life. Her life was an open book in the communities in which she lived. She died reposing in the faith she professed. She leaves four sisters and two brothers, and a host of friends to mourn her loss.

John Stephenson, after an illness of two weeks, died at his home on the farm near Round Prairie on Sunday, October 23. He was born in Clay County, March 8, 1835. There he spent his youth and young manhood, removing to Bates County in 1872. He was converted when 12 years of age and united with the M.E. Church. He was married to Drusilla Tarrence in 1857. To this union nine children were born, seven of whom, with his wife survive him. The children, N.E. of Trenton, Mo.; E.S. of Kearney, Mo; Mrs. J.A. Ford, Mrs. Chas. Culver, Mrs. Wm. Holt, Miss Ethel and Gerty all near the old home were present when death came, with the exception of N.E. Stephenson. When Mr. Stephenson first came to this county he resided on Mr. Sam Gilbreath's (now deceased) place for ten years. He then purchased the place where he lived the remainder of his life. There he and his wife celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1907. Burial was in the Round Prairie Cemetery. He is gone but he has lived a full life. He was a friend to all and stood for the good of everyone.

Last rites for Miss Ethel Stephenson were held May 29, 1969, at the Trinity Methodist Church of Appleton City, Mo. Interment was at Round Prairie cemetery under direction of Eckhoff Funeral Home of Appleton City. Miss Ethel Stephenson, last surviving child of John and Drucilla Stephenson, died May 27, 1969 at Ellett Memorial Hospital of Appleton City, Mo. at age of 91 years, two months, four days. She was born March 23, 1878 and grew up in the Round Prairie community of Bates County, Mo., where she attended Rich Valley school. She lived and worked with her parents, brothers and sisters until 1910 when her father suddenly passed away. She and her sister, Gertie, lived on the farm until March 1915, when they moved to Appleton City and continued to care for their aged mother who died in 1916. Her sister, Miss Gertie, died in December 1918. Soon her brother Frank came from Clay County, Mo. to live with her until his death in February 1937. Since 1937 her 12 nieces and nephews have been her family, who enjoyed going to see "Aunt Ethel." The seven living ones are Amos Ford, Eunice Wilson, Gladys Wix, Sylvester Culver, Wilbur Holt, Berniece Drake and Helen Young. Three years ago she gave up her home and went to Barnett Rest Home, which she called home and enjoyed visits with many who came to see her. She had been in Ellett Memorial hospital several times but only there a few days her last sickness. She was a regular attendant at church and Bible school while living on the farm and at the Trinity Methodist church in Appleton City, as long as health permitted her to attend. She still enjoyed the services they had at the rest home. She was a dress-maker but never too busy to care for her mother and for others. She was a talented woman in many ways. Miss Ethel was the last of nine brothers and sisters who were Eugene, Elosia, Ella, Minnie, Frank, Carrie, Hallie and Gertie. She will be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews, 32 great nieces and nephews, a number of great-great nieces and nephews and other relatives, neighbors and friends.

Jackie J. Sterns, 7-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Iva Sterns, died at the family home in Shawnee township, Monday, February 1st. Jackie was born near Altona, Mo., October 4, 1929. He became sick about six months ago and has suffered much through his sickness, but never too much to have a smile for all who come, and when as long as he could speak, his little songs could be heard. All that parents and friends could do was done to keep him here, but Jesus said, "Suffer little children to come unto me for of such is the kingdom of heaven." On the first day of February 1937 God called Jackie home, where he will be waiting and watching for daddy, mamma, brothers, sisters and friends and we know he wants to see us all again. Jackie J. S. was 7 years, 3 months and 27 days old. He leaves to mourn, father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Ive Sterns; three brothers, Kermit, Snow and Harold Martz of the home; two sisters Mrs. Orville DeShazer of Harrisonville, and Bonnie Bea Sterns of the home. Jackie was loved by all who knew him. Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon, February 3. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery by the Creath & Six funeral service.

Funeral services for Jacob E. Stiles, 20, formerly of Coral Springs, Fla., was held on Friday, Dec. 8, at the Knox Presbyterian Church. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Born Nov. 20, 1986, in Plantation, Fla., he died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, in Dallas. Jacob grew up in Naperville, attended Wheatland and White Eagle Elementary Schools and was a 2005 graduate of Neuqua Valley High School, where he was a varsity swimmer and editor of the academic section of the yearbook. Jacob was currently in his sophomore year at Southern Methodist University, SMU, in Dallas, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, SAE, fraternity and most recently had been named SMU's "Mr. University". While growing up in Naperville, Jacob was a lifeguard and swim team member at White Eagle Country Club and was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church. He had a talent with computers and enjoyed watching movies. Velma Laveta Scott Still, 99, Nevada, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a brief illness. She was born April 20, 1908, in Nevada, to Chester Withrow and Emma Ann Ball Withrow. She married Virgil O. Scott in March 1927 and he preceded her in death in August 1954. Later she married Earl Still in July 1959 in Nevada, and he preceded her in death. Velma was born and raised in Nevada and spent most of all of her life here. She worked for a number of years at Wigg's and Pokorny's drug stores. She was a charter member of the Nevada Assembly of God and a member of the Nevada B.P.O.E. Does 564 and also served as chaplain. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Sue Rich and her husband Wilford, Nevada, and Sarah Claspill and her husband Tom, Nevada; two daughters-in-law, Margaret Scott and Patricia Stark, both of Nevada; eight grandchildren, Charles L. Scott, Milo, Mo., Pat Arnold, Nevada, Chris McCarty, Nevada, Greg Scott, Hepler, Kan., Barry Scott, Nevada, Deb Asberry, Nevada, Brandon Claspil Willard, Mo., and Vickie Meyers, Bonner Springs, Kan.; 27 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons, Ray and Bill Scott, two infants at births, six sisters, and one great-great-granddaughter, Zoey Ipock. Martha Mildred Stilwell, age 87 of Butler, Missouri, died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri. She was born August 7, 1909, to James Ralston and Martha Ann Porter Hughes near Virginia, Missouri. Mildred, an only child, was a life long resident of Amsterdam, Missouri, moving to Butler Estates in 1988 followed by her residency at Bristol Monor and then finally Joe Clark, all in Butler, Missouri. She was united in marriage to Everett Claude Jackson on January 4, 1928, and to this union, three children were born. Mr. Jackson preceded Mildred in death March 9, 1944. She married William Stilwell on November 20, 1946, who also preceded her in death January 23, 1982. Mildred was a longtime member of the Amsterdam Methodist Church. She joined Eastern Star on May 7, 1970, in Drexel, Missouri, where she was Past Worthy Matron and served several years as treasurer. She later transferred to the Butler Eastern Star 478. Mildred was a member of many clubs in the Amsterdam area and was also an Avon representation for several years. Mildred is survived by two daughters, Edith Cutburth and husband Bill of Paola, Kansas, and Evelyn Stanfill and husband Carl of Amoret, Missouri; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and an infant son, Darrell Raymond Jackson.

Mr. William Stilwell, 72, died January 23, 1982 at his home in Amsterdam. He was born June 18 1909 in New York City and was the adopted son of Frank and Emma Stilwell. Mr. Stilwell lived most of his life in Bates County. He was an electrician at Westinghouse Electric and the Lake City Army Ammunitions Plant for several years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Amsterdam. He served in the military for four years during World War II, and was stationed in the Pacific Theater. He married Mildred Hughes Jackson on November 20, 1946. She survives, as do two stepdaughters, Mrs. Edith Cutburth of Paola, Ks. And Mrs. Evelyn Stanfill of Amoret; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral service was January 25 at the Amsterdam United Methodist Church. The daughter of William Guy and Gladys Norwood Cooper, she was born in Wyandotte County, Kan., on Oct. 14, 1931. Naomi and Arthur E. Stringberg were married on July 29, 1949. He preceded her in death march 16, 1999. Her parents and a brother, Ermal Guy Cooper, also preceded her in death. She and Arthur moved from Pleasant Hill in 1989 to a small farm northwest of Humansville. Survivors include three children, David Stringberg, Kansas City, Debi Yeager, Adrian and Diana Schrock, Garden City; nine grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. A memorial service was Friday, Feb. 17 in Springfield National Cemetery, under the direction of Murray Funeral Home.

James "Jim" Sutton, 67, Drexel, MO, died Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at his home. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the Atkinson Chapel in Harrisonville, MO. Burial will be in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, MO. Jim was born September 22, 1941 in Harrisonville, MO, the son of James Logan and Lora Levon (Goddard) Sutton. He married Lavonne Limpus on October 16, 1960 at the Archie Methodist Church in Archie. To this union two sons were born, Jeffrey D. and Johnny L. Sutton. Jim worked for Bendix Corp. and other companies until 1969 at which time his father and mother-in-law, Lyle and Ruby Limpus, asked him to come to work for them at Limpus Quarries, where he worked until 1982. He then decided to start his own business, Sutton Trucking, Inc. He retired in 2005 and his sons, Johnny and Jeffrey now operate the family business. Jim loved to travel; he took his granddaughter to Africa and his grandson to Alaska and all over the United States. He enjoyed his trips to Texas in the winter and the many friends he made. He enjoyed fishing and trucking. Jim was preceded in death by his father, James L. Sutton and his mother and father-in-law, Lyle and Ruby Limpus. He is survived by his wife, Lavonne, of the home; his mother, Lora Levon Sevy, Adrian, MO; two sons, Jeff Sutton and his son, Cody, Archie, MO and Johnny Sutton and his wife, Robin and their daughter, Jessica, Drexel, MO; two brothers, Dennis Sutton and his wife, Patty, Butler, MO and Wayne Sutton and his wife, Vicky, Archie, MO; two sisters, Sandy Tallman and her husband, Donnie, Adrian, MO and Ronda Wernex and her husband, Jim, Freeman, MO; brothers-in-law, Ron Limpus and his wife, Linda, Harrisonville, MO and Harlan Limpus and Lila, Lake Winnebago, MO and many nephews and nieces. Jim also leaves his other family, all of the employees at Sutton Trucking. Jim's message to all his family and friends after being diagnosed with cancer was, life is short, enjoy every minute to the fullest; hold your family close; every minute is precious and take time to smell the roses.
