SHOT DEAD - One of the saddest accidents that has ever shocked this community, occurred last Wednesday morning; as a result of which one of the best young men in this county was instantly killed. Henry Bagby and Will Riley, two young men living in the vicinity of Burdette, started out on a hunt, they were traveling along a hedge fence, one on either side. Riley attempted to hand a shot gun through the fence to Bagby, muzzle first. In doing this the lock caught on a limb discharging the gun, the contents lodging in Bagby's left breast, causing instant death. Deceased is a son of James Bagby, an old settler and highly respected citizen. Henry was a popular and up-right young man, loved and respected by all who knew him. His sudden demise is a terrible calamity to his parents, brother and sisters.

Pioneer Citizen Passed - Uncle James Bagby passed away at Bay City, Texas, August 22, 1928; aged 87 years, 5 months and 12 days. Mr. Bagby was born near Terre Haute, Indiana, March 10, 1841. In early childhood he moved with his parents to Illinois, where he grew to manhood. In early manhood he moved to Bates county, locating on a farm near Burdett, where he lived for many years. December 23, 1870 he was united in marriage with Sarah Isabelle Zeimmer. To this union seven children were born, viz: Wm. A. Bagby, of near Adrian; Elizabeth J. Roach, Henry J. Bagby, Annabelle Harris, of Drexel, and Noah Bagby , of near Adrian. Mr. Bagby died October 23, 1910. Mrs. Roach passed away December 19, 1911, and Henry Roach in 1894. Mrs. Clara Clark of near Adrian, also survives and resides on the old Bagby farm. Many years ago Mr. Bagby was converted and united with the Burdett Baptist Church and remained a faithful member of the same until his death. During his active years Mr. Bagby was an active factor in promoting good influence in the community, always standing for the things which were for the betterment of society. He was a good citizen, an obliging neighbor, a kind and loving husband and father, and will be kindly remembered by many friends. The men and women who rendered efficient service in the development of this country are fast passing but they leave a heritage of work well done. The body of Mr. Bagby was shipped to Adrian and Monday was taken to Burdett for burial. Funeral services were held at the Burdett Baptist church. Interment was made in the family lot in the Burdette cemetery.

Noah F. Bagby - Noah Franklin, son of James and Sarah Elizabeth Bagby, was born in East Boone Township, near Burdette, Mo., September 28 1878, and died August 21, 1956, in Kansas City, Mo., at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 23 days. When a small boy he joined the Baptist church in Burdette. He was united in marriage with Mrs. Fern Page in 1913. To this union were born nine children, two of them preceding him in death--Lena May died in infancy and Walter Franklin lost his life in the service of his country in 1942, serving in the Navy. Surviving are Mrs. Annabelle Clary, South Gate, Calif: Ralph Bagby, Hickman Mills, Mo.; Mrs. Evelyn Eakins, St. Johns, Newfoundland; Mrs. Margaret Zumwalt, Hickman Mills, Mo.; James Bagby, Kansas City, Mo.; Harold Bagby, Hickman Mils, Mo.; Mrs. Hazel Smith, Louisburg, Mo.; 9 grandchildren, one brother, Charley Bagby of California, and one sisters Mrs. Annabelle Harris of Ft. Smith, Ark. Funeral services were held at the Six Chapel, Adrian, Thursday, August 23, 1956. Burial was in the Burdette Cemetery.

Joe Edwin Bailey, 67, of Nevada, Mo., died Wednesday July 25, 2007, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, after fighting a battle against lung cancer. Joe was born June 26, 1940, in Nevada, Mo., to Henry Edward Bailey and Kathryn Howell. He was married Oct. 4, 1961, in Las Vegas, Nev., to Kathryn Banes. Mr. Bailey spent 12 years in the United States Air Force serving in Vietnam. Full military honors will help celebrate Joe's life. He and his family moved back to Nevada, in December 1969, where he worked for the Ford Dealership for many years before becoming co-owner of Auto Spot until 1997. Joe was a past member of the Eagles Organization in Nevada and the VFW. Joe was an avid sports fan when it came to the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs, along with Nascar races. He loved all aspects of nature whether it be hunting, fishing or just watching the wildlife out his back window. Survivors include his wife Kathryn Bailey, one son, Robert Bailey and wife Julie of Nevada, two daughters, Tracy Garren of Henderson, N.C., and Abby Cagle and husband David of Kirksville, Mo. Also included are eight grandchildren. Ryan Miller. Brittaney and William Bailey; Katie, Tyler and Nicholas Cagle, and Joe and Jared Garreti. Also with one great-grandson, Ethen. Joe is survived by his stepmother., Sarah Bailey, of Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada, a stepbrother, Victor Minnis and wife Rosann of Raymore, Mo., two half sisters, Cheryl and Kathy, and his mother-in-law, Ellen Bowker of Irwin, Mo., and many nieces, nephews, friends and beloved pets. He was preceded in death by his dad, Henry Bailey of Nevada, in May of 2005, his mother, Kathryn Bunker, two daughters, Carla and Barbra Bailey, one sister, Francis Kay Bailey, and one stepbrother, Kenneth G. Minnis. Services to celebrate Joe's life will be Saturday, July 28, with family receiving friends the same day at Evergreen Memorial Chapel. The burial will be at Newton Burial Park in Nevada.

Ruby G. Bailey, 98, Nevada, passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at the Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada. She was born June 18, 1909, in Long Run, Mo., the daughter of the Rev. Joel Z. and Minnie Elizabeth Hobbs. On April 23, 1927, Ruby Hobbs was married to Cecil W. Bailey, in Gainesville, Mo., and he preceded her in death in 1973. Mrs. Bailey graduated from Moler School of Cosmetology in St. Louis, and was a beautician in Salem, Mo., for 25 years. At the time of her death, Ruby was a member of the First Baptist Church of Nevada. Ruby was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Ruby is survived by one daughter, Betty Wynn and her husband Bill, Nevada, three grandchildren, Sherrie Bell, Sheila Wynn and Bill Wynn III and five great-grandchildren; one brother, Amos Hobbs. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Cecil Bailey, three brothers, Estel Hobbs, Loring Hobbs and Trellis Hobbs. Graveside services will be held Monday, Nov. 12, at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem, Mo. (Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada)

Mary Catherine Bain, 67, Nevada, formerly of Butler, died Wednesday, June 13, at Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada. She was born Jan. 4, 1934, in Butler, the daughter of Ira and Mary Belle (Fansler) Firestone. Mrs. Bain was an associate cashier with Wal-Mart in Excelsior Springs for 16 years before retiring and moving to Nevada in 1992. She was past president of the Spring Village Retirement Club. Mrs. Bain was preceded in death by her parents. Surviving are three daughters, Pam Morton, Lee's Summit, and Donna Jones, Kansas City, and Cathy Garwood, Nevada; a brother, Jim Firestone, Colby, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Visitation was today, June 15, at the Underwood-Steinbeck Funeral Home in Butler. Graveside services and burial were today at the Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler.

Mildred "Millie" I. Baird, 82, of Prescott, KS, formerly of Butler, MO, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2008 at the Mercy Hospital in Ft. Scott, KS. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at the Underwood-Brandtonies Funeral Home in Butler, MO. Burial followed in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Mildred was born on March 23, 1925 in Bates County, Missouri to Walter and Myrtle (Borum) Craig. On January 14, 1955 she was united in marriage to Laurence W. Baird. They were married until his passing in 1981. Mildred was an employee of the Bates County Memorial Hospital for almost 20 years from June of 1968 to February of 1987. She enjoyed cooking, reading, word searches, Bingo, Dominos and especially spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three brothers, Clyde, John and Orville Craig; four sisters, Florence Anderson, Fern Menagali, Beulah Craig and Hazel Dawson; and one son-in-law Greg Cantrell. Mildred is survived by her two daughters, Lora Jean Rice (John) of Girard, KS and Ruth Alice Austin (Mark) of Butler, MO; one brother, Bill Craig of Holden, MO; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Austin of Springfield, MO, Laurence Austin of Springfield, MO, Shana Austin of Butler, MO, and Brian Austin of Butler, MO; and a host of nieces and nephews.

THOMAS BALGUM DEAD - Thomas Balgum died at his home near Burdett, December 20th, 1917, after a lingering illness; aged 79 years, 3 months and 6 days. Mr. Balgum was born in Christiana, Norway, October 14th, 1838, at the age of seventeen years he came to this country, locating near St. Joseph, Mo. He was united in marriage with Miss Eliza J. Riddle. To this union seven children were born, all living. They are, Mrs. Nannie Puffer, Medera, Colorado; J.C. Balgum, of Adrian; Mrs. Alice Harper, of Adrian; Mrs. Lillie Scoville, Linden, Wash; Mrs. Minnie Ashbaugh, Adrian; Mrs. Eva Hedger, Foster and Mrs. Hattie Lewis, of Billings, Mont. Beside the children he is survived by eighteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In 1869 Mr. Balgum moved to Bates county, locating near Burdett, where he spent the remainder of his life. In early life he was converted and united with the Baptist Church and remained a faithful member of same until his death. Mr. Balgum was a good citizen and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. His death will be mourned by a wide circle of friends. Funeral services were held from the Balgum home on November 24th, and the body buried in the Burdett Cemetery. The children desire to express their thanks for the tender care given their father by his neighbors during his long illness. They deeply appreciate the kind offers.

Mrs. Mary Ballard Dead - Mary Ballard was born in Columbus, Ohio, March 30, 1841, and died October 15, 1924; aged 83 years, 6 months and 16 days. She moved with her parents to Iowa, and there grew to womanhood. Here she met her future husband and they were married December 6th, 1863. They lived on their farm in Story county, Iowa, until 1907 when they moved to Bates county, Mo., where she lived until her death. Her husband died about 12 years ago. The last six years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. W. O. Bates. She was the mother of four children; three boys, Arthur L.; Park D.; and Bert M. Ballard, and one daughter, Mrs. Carrie S. Bates; all living. In 1889 she was converted and joined the Episcopal church and has lived in the faith since. The funeral services were held in the Baptist church at Altona, and burial in the Altona cemetery.

Death From Oil Burns - Mrs. Lou Banke, prominent lady of Shawnee township, died at her home, Monday afternoon, May 2, the result of burns received early Monday morning from the explosion of kerosene spilled on a kitchen range. Mrs. Banke arose at her usual time Monday morning and built a fire in the stove and had gone into the yard for a short time. On the top of the warming oven of the stove was the can of kerosene beside a coffee drip-o-lator. Mrs. Banke reached for the coffee pot and as she removed it from the oven it struck the can of oil knocking it off. As the can fell the splash saturated Mrs. Banke's clothes almost entirely and when the can contacted the hot stove there was an explosion, and instantly her body was engulfed in flames. Miss Merle Crabtree was in an adjoining room and rushed to Mrs. Banke with bed-clothing and wrapped some around Mrs. Banke. This act probably saved the home and instant death to Mrs. Banke. However, the burning oil had burned into the body of the lady and the inhaled flames had reached into her mouth and lungs. There was no possibility of recovery. Mrs. Banke died at 1:45 Monday afternoon. Mrs. Banke, during the winter, had suffered serious illness but had recovered sufficiently to be able to be around her home and back and forth to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Martz, for several weeks. OBITUARY - Lou Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Davis, was born at Zanesville, Ohio, March 7, 1867. Death claimed her May 2, 1938, the result of oil burns received at her home a few hours before. Her age at the time of her death was 71 years, 1 month and 5 days. When a young girl she moved with her parents to Missouri and the family located near Montrose. Here she met and was married to Wm. H. Banke on January 27, 1887 at Johnstown, Mo. About 42 years ago the family moved to Bates county and located in Shawnee township near where the family home now is located. To this union nine children were born, five of whom survive. Two boys and one girl died early in life, and another daughter, Dena Harrison died May 7, 1935. The five surviving daughters are: Mrs. Lynna Martz, Adrian, Mo.; Mrs. Grace DeMott, Carthage, Mo.; Mrs. Bea Hess, Harrisonville, Mo.; Mrs. Marie Gifford, Chicago, Ill.; and Mrs. Peach Nickerson, Long Beach, California. Mrs. Banke's husband preceded her in death on May 10, 1928. There are two brothers, Ben Davis, Denver, Colo., and Carl Davis, Briggs, Okla., and a sister, Mrs. Eva J. Young, McConnellsville, Ohio. Three grandchildren, Helen and Bonnie DeMott and Eddie Hess. Mrs. Banke was a member of the Altona Christian Church, and during the active days of that congregation was an active worker. Mrs. Banke was a true Christian lady, exemplifying her doctrine in her everyday living. No community was ever blessed with a more whole-hearted personality. Her home, always hospitable, graced with her loving personality, was a place one looked forward to for a visit. One never left Mrs. Banke without the feeling of cheerfulness and the better for the visit. The community has lost an outstanding personality in the death of Mrs. Banke. Funeral services for Mrs. Banke were held from the Altona Baptist church, Wednesday afternoon, May 4. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery by the Creath & Six funeral service.

Obituary - William Henry Banke was born April 1, 1863, near Charleston, Mississippi county, Mo., passed away at his home near Adrian, Mo., May 10, 1927, aged 64 years, 1 month and 10 days. He was united in marriage to Loue Davis, Jan. 10, 1888. To this union 9 children were born, 3 preceding him in death. Those who survive him are Mrs. Charles Martz, Adrian, Mrs. Dean Harrison, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Fred DeMott, Mrs. Lewis Hess, Adrian; and Peach at home with their mother. Also 3 grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Henry Putthoff of Kansas City; and Mrs. Rose Pfifer of California. His parents came from Holland and located near Charleston, Mo., where his father was judge of Mississippi county for several years. He was left an orphan at the age of 10 years and was then reared at Germantown; being of Catholic faith. Funeral services were conduced Thursday afternoon at the Altona Christian church by Elder S. W. Maxey of Johnstown, who united them in marriage. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery. Mr. Banke was a good citizen and was held in high esteem by all who knew him.

Clyde was born March 22, 1926 in Cleveland, MO, the son of Clyde Velmer and Kate Christina (Eiffert) Barnard, Sr. He worked as a maintenance mechanic for Twin City Tool Company in Olathe, KS before retiring at age 65. Clyde also raised cattle. He enjoyed spending time with his family. Clyde was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Kathryn and infant sister, Dorothy. Surviving are four brothers, Robert Barnard and his wife, Ruth, James Barnard, Bill Barnard and Ira Barnard and his wife, Bonnie and two sisters, Betty Huggins and her husband, Milton, and Rose Barnard, all of Cass County, MO.

Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. He was born in Kansas City, MO, on August 7, 1922 to Frank and Ora (Streight) Barnett. He served with the Army's 75th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II. He was a 51 year member of the Asbestos Workers' Local 27. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lloyd, Eddie and Harry; and one sister, Jewel. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Janie; sons Wylie Barnett and wife, Marla of Kansas City, MO, and Randy Barnett of Blue Springs, MO; daughters Jan Pieratt of Warsaw, MO, and Gayle Quigley and husband Brian of Kansas City, MO; along with 10 grandchildren, Stephanie Buhler, Kim Carpenter, Scott Barnett, Randy Barnett, Jana Orem-Loughlin, Jennifer Streeby, Cassidy Barnett, Jeffrey Quigley, Joey Quigley, and Jared Quigley and four great-grandchildren, Lucas Carpenter, Lauren Carpenter, Branden Buhler and Cameron Buhler. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed.

Carl W. Barnum died at 5 p.m. on February 14, 2003 at his home in Rockville. He was 77 years old. Mr. Barnum was born in Chanute, Kansas on April 4, 1925, to Omar T. & Vera Newton Barnum and was the fifth of seven children. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. He is survived by two sisters and one brother, Juanita Berger and Doris Redford, both of Clinton, and brother Orval T. Barnum of Eagle Rock. Carl also leaves behind Venita Barnum of the home and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Amber Barnum, also of the home, and daughter, Judy Riley of Rockville, and three grandchildren, Jerry, Debbie and Melissa Riley. Carl Barnum was surrounded by the love of many. His nieces and nephews are Barbara Wolf, Janet Jesley, Dennis Barnum, Paula and Roger Vannatten and their son Rogger II; along with great-nephews, Gerald, Justin and Jacob Watts of Lamar, and Stephen Moore of Indiana, Chris Moore (Air Force) stationed in Knob Noster, and Jeff Moore (Navy) stationed in Kuwait. Carl had many friends. Carl Barnum served in the United States Army during World War II and also in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was the recipient of several service medals and was a lifetime member of the Clinton VFW. He was proud to have served this great country. Funeral services were Wednesday, February 19, at the Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home. Burial was in the Rockville Cemetery.

She was born June 18, 1926 to Herman Ivon Sr. and Velda Adeline Geiger Strauch in Lincoln, Nebraska. Bobby is survived by two sons, John Barrett Jr. and wife Jan of Montgomery, Texas and Rob Barrett and wife Anita of Panhandle, Texas; one brother, Herman Strauch Jr. of Butler, Missouri; one sister, Sandra Stevens and husband Gordon of Lee's Summit, Missouri; and six grandchildren, Jared Barrett, Jennifer Barrett, Jordan Barrett, Lisa McCoid and husband Jeremy, Laura Barrett and Lacy Barrett. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Kenneth "Kenny" Barr; a brother, Jerry Strauch; one sister, Beverly Jean Strauch; and a daughter, Janna Barrett.

Janna Sue Barrett, age 58 of Tulsa, Oklahoma formerly of Butler, Missouri died Sunday, April 27, 2008 at St. John's Hospital in Tulsa. She was born August 22, 1949 and at a few weeks of age, adopted by John and LaVerta May "Bobby" Strauch Barrett in Independence, Missouri. From an early age on, she was raised by her dad and mother, Kenny and Bobby Barr. Janna was a 1967 graduate of Butler High School. She studied computer programming at Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg, Missouri and started a 35-year career with Kansas City Power and Light and One Oak Power Company, retiring in 2007. Janna is survived by her mother, Bobby Barr of Butler, Missouri; two brothers, John Barrett and wife Jan of Montgomery, Texas and Rob Barrett and wife Anita of Panhandle, Texas; her stepmother, Jeannie Barrett of Independence, Missouri; and several uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her adoptive father, John Barrett Sr. and dad, Kenny Barr.

George John Bartkoski, 80, formerly of Dederick, passed away on July 10, 2008, at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center. George Bartkoski was born on April 11, 1928, in Nevada. He worked for Proctor and Gamble in Kansas City for 34 years. He was a member of the Eagles 147. He took great pride in his vegetable garden and enjoyed sharing fresh produce with family and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Bartkoski - El Dorado Springs, and a sister, Vonda Wortman of Kansas City. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of the home and a number of children, stepchildren and grandchildren; three brothers: Paul Bartkoski, Kansas City, Sam Bartkoski, Tonganoxie KS, and Tim Bartkoski, El Dorado Springs; and one sister, Martha Bartkoski, Springfield. Services were Friday, July 18, at the Maple Hill Mortuary in Shawnee.

Lorean Robinson Bartley, 88, of Rich Hill, Missouri, died Monday, November 24, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri. She was born November 17, 1920 in Valley Springs, Arkansas, the daughter of Boman Turney and Burma Adilene Lawrence Dean. She married Leon Robinson in 1938. He preceded her in death in 1968. She then married Frank Bartley who also preceded her in 1998. Lorean worked at the Braemoor Coat Factory in Pleasanton, at Nellie Dawn in Nevada, Missouri, drove a school bus and had worked for J.C. Penney in Fort Scott, Kansas. She was a member of the Pleasant Prairie Baptist Church in Belton, Missouri. Lorean was a descendent of Stephen Hopkins who was on the Mayflower. A member of her family participated in every war or battle since the Revolutionary War. She was preceded in death also by her parents; eight sisters, and one granddaughter. Survivors include one son, George Robinson & Kathy of Indianapolis, Indiana; one daughter, Janet Staton & Roscoe of Cleveland, Missouri; one brother, Pearl Soper; five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Services will be held Friday, November 28, 2008 at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel, Pleasanton, Kansas. Interment will be in the Pleasanton Cemetery.

Carrie Sarah Ballard was born December 26, 1864 in Story Co., Iowa, in the home of her grandfather, Moses Ballard, who was a pioneer doctor there. She passed away December 28, 1958. November 25, 1888, she was married to William O. Bates, also of Story County. To this union seven children were born, two of them dying while very young. Those remaining are three daughters, Florence Witter, Kansas City; Doris Pope, Hoxie, Kansas and Irene Hendrickson of Independence and two sons Karl of Garden City and Lucien of Kansas City. She also leaves to mourn her loss 19 grandchildren and 25 great grand children. The family lived in Iowa until 1905, when they moved to a farm in the Altona neighborhood where she resided until the death of her husband in 1936. She belonged to the Altona Baptist Church many years until she moved to Adrian when she transferred her membership to the Adrian Baptist church. Funeral services were held at the Altona Baptist church December 30. Burial was in the Altona cemetery.

W. O. Bates Passes - W. O. Bates, 79 years old, and for more than thirty years a resident of Grand River, died at his home last Thursday. Altho Mr. Bates had been in failing health for some time he had been able to mingle with his friends daily and his death was quite unexpected, and a shock to his many friends in that community and in Adrian. William Orin Bates, son of Matthew and Cyntha Bates, was born in Story county, Iowa, November 10, 1857, and passed away at his home near Adrian, Missouri, September 23, 1937, being 79 years, 10 months and 13 days old. He was united in marriage to Carrie Sarah Ballard of Story county, Iowa, December 27, 1888. To this union were born four girls, Florence Mouse of Emporia, Kans.; Mary Bates; Doris Pope of Selden, Kans.; Irene Hendrickson of Rockville, Mo.; and three boys Carl Bates of near Altona; Lucien Bates of the home and Howard Bates. Mary and Howard preceded him in death. Father Bates was a beloved, kind and true husband. He was a courageous, sympathetic, and helpful father; a clear thinking, broadminded, and cheerful citizen. He early became a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 368, and was in good standing at the time of his departure. He, being educationally inclined, received his college degree at Vinton, Iowa, after which he taught school two years. He lived in Story county until 1905 when he moved on a farm near Adrian, Missouri where he remained until his passing. To mourn his departure are his wife, the five children, and six brothers and sisters; Ulrich Bates of Nebraska, Frank Bates and Ida Eivins of Iowa, Andrew Bates of California, and Mary Shottuck of Nebraska and Austin Bates; and fifteen grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives. Funeral services were held from the Altona Baptist church, Saturday afternoon, September 25. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery by Creath & Six funeral service.

Mrs. Beale died Saturday, May 5, at St. Joseph Hospital, Kansas City, Mo. She was born Jan. 31, 1927, in Shawnee. She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, but most recently attended the Altoona Baptist Church in Adrian, Mo. She attended the senior activities in Adrian, Mo. She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Lydia Widmer and her brothers, Casper Widmer and Horold Widmer. Survivors include one son, Donald Beale, Apache Junction, Ariz.; one daughter, Linda Miller, Bonner Springs; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. James W. "Jim" Beaman, 86, of Harwood, passed away Oct. 5, 2007. He was born Nov. 7, 1920, in Fondis, Colo., the son of William F. Beaman and Flossie Masters. Jim married Myrtle A. Franklin, on June 1, 1947, in Calhan, Colo. They had five children. Jim is a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1947. Jim and Myrtle moved to Harwood, in February 1955, where they reared their children and operated a farm. He worked as a carpenter doing construction and was a member of the Carpenters Local Union 1271. He enjoyed collecting and working on old and antique cars and tractors. he was a long-time member and elder of the Schell City Christian Church. Jim was preceded in death by two brothers; Rex and Keith Beaman; two sisters, Ruth Beaman and Naomia Hansen; a granddaughter, Jacquline Moreno-Barnes; and a great-granddaughter, Avery Wigton. BEAMON, 90 HELD AT DAYTON - James Jasper Beamon, son of Samuel Ellis Beamon and Coatney Ann Hamby, was born on April 5, 1870 in Syracuse, Mo., and passed away in his home in Dayton, Mo., September 24, 1960 at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 19 days. Jim, or granddad, as he was known to most people, had suffered a lengthy illness. He was united in marriage to Tilda Hatfield, November 29, 1885 and they lived their entire life in Cass and Bates counties. To this union three children were born: Everett, John and Delcie Bryant, all have preceded him in death. His wife passed away in 1954. He was also preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.He is survived by one sister, Cecil Williams of Stockton,Calf., one brother, Charlie Beamon of Kansas City; 3 grandchildren, Richard Bryant, Robert Bryant and Louise Pulliam, all of Garden City; one daughter-in-law, Opal Northup of Harrisonville; 15 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews and many friends. Though he did not belong to any church, Mr. Beamon in a recent conversation with Rev. Porter, stated that he was a Christian. Funeral services were held Monday, September 26 at the Dayton Community church. Burial was in Altona Cemetery.

Delbert Lee Beasley IV - Delbert Lee Beasley IV, two years, one month, 11 days, El Dorado Springs, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2008, at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. He was born March 6, 2006, to Delbert Lee Beasley III and Jessica Ann Dutcher Beasley in El Dorado Springs. Delbert was diagnosed at four months of age with Langerhan Cell Histiocytosis, and died from complications of the rare disease in which the body produces too many white blood cells. Delbert is survived by his parents, Delbert and Jessica Beasley, El Dorado Springs; one brother, Milamber Smith, Roscoe; four sisters: Jezare Lynn Beasley, Athens, OH, Jasmyne Dutcher, Yakira Smith and Kiara Smith, all of Roscoe; maternal grandparents, Larry and Pam Dutcher, Butler; paternal step-grandparents, Cheryl and Bob Henry, Butler; maternal great-grandmother, Grace Dutcher, Monegaw Springs; paternal step-great-grandmother, Lucille Whertvine, Butler; an uncle, Jimmy Beasley, Butler; two aunts, Cassandra Beasley Rogers and husband, Jay, Hume, and Melody Beasley Schowengerdt and husband, Jesse, Butler; several great-uncles, great-aunts, cousins and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, James Edward Beasley; a great-uncle, Delbert L. Beasley III; and his great-grandparents. Services were held Tuesday, April 22, at the Schowengerdt Chapel, Butler. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler.

OBITUARY - After an illness of only a few hours, Mrs. Rosella Beaty, aged 62 years died at her home one-half mile east of Burdett on June 8, 1902. Rosella Beaty, the daughter of Joseph Mudd, was born in Nelson County Ky. In 1840. In 1859 she with her fathers family came to Missouri and settled one-half miles west of Burdett. She was one of a family of 9 children, six of whom are still living. Joe Dave Mudd of Burdett, Wm. Mudd of Rich Hill, Mrs. Dakin of Nelson Co., Ky. Mrs. Ashbaugh of Burdett, Henry Mudd of Burdett and Mrs. Hill of Amsterdam. In 1870 she was married to Morris Roach, who died in 1878. To this union were born 5 children, 3 of whom survive the mother, Thos., Henry and David Roach. In 1880 she was married to Thos. Beaty, to this union were born two children, James and Mary Beaty. Again the husband was called away, January 1887. Since that time Mrs. Beaty lived with her children on the farm where she had lived since she was first married in 1870. Deceased was a good, kind, devoted, wife and mother. Her fine character, kind disposition and fond devotion to her family can only be appreciated by those who know her. Words can not express it, we can only say a good kind lady has passed away, one who was loved by all who knew her, and one not soon to be forgotten. Funeral services were from the house on Monday afternoon June 9th. The remains were followed to the cemetery by a very large number of friends who mourn her loss.

She was married June 16, 1940 in Nevada, Mo., to Walter G. Becket and he preceded her in death June 6, 1984. Mrs. Becket was born and reared in Nevada. She was a 1931 graduate of Nevada High School, Draughon's Business College, Springfield, Mo., and the American Savings and Loan Institute, Chicago, Ill. She was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Nevada. She was also a member of the Athenas GFWC and a former member of the Nevada B&PW Club. She was employed for 43 years at the Farm and Home Savings Association in Nevada, retiring May 1, 1976. Survivors include five cousins, Dorothy May Durst, Butler, Mo., Virgil Fox, Lee's Summit, Mo., Lloyd Diehl, Nevada, Mo., Paul Diehl, Butler, Mo., and Ruth Nelson, Neodesha, Kan.; two nieces, Betty Jo Robinson, Nevada, Mo., and Sharron Becket, Tacoma, Wash. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada Mo. Interment will follow at Newton Burial Park in Nevada.

Harry Earl Bell Sr., age 71, of Hume, died Thursday Nov. 8, 2007, at his home from the effects of lung cancer. He was born April 13, 1936 in Kansas City, Mo., the son of LeRoy S. and Carrie G. Evans Bell. He was a 1954 graduate of Center High School in Kansas City and served his country in the United States Army in 1959 and 1960. He married Mildred K. Brooks on July 31, 1965, in Kansas City. He was employed as a farmer and carpenter working for O'Brien Partition for more than 20 years. Harry moved to Hume in 1975 where he enjoyed raising Black Angus cattle. He was a 50 year plus member of the Carpenter's Union Local No. 61, was baptized at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Kansas City, served on the Hume Fair Board, was a 4-H woodworking project leader and the Bell family was honored as Bates County Farm Family of the Year for 1988. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, LeRoy Bell Jr. and Dennis Bell, and two sisters, Gladys Boles and Ruby Baber. He is survived by his wife Mildred of the home, one son Harry Bell Jr., of Hume; three daughters, Melody Wikoff and husband Jeff, of Hume, Angie Wepener and husband Verne, of Williamsport, Pa., and Carrie Sutcliffe and husband Tom of Hume, one brother Eugene Bell of Kansas City; a sister Anita Bennett of Raytown, Mo.; and 10 grandchildren, Janine Castillo, Sara, Kelsie and Braxton Wikoff; Harrison, Andrew and Etienne Wepener; Derek, Megan, and Tommy Sutcliffe; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held Monday Nov. 12, at the Hume Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Lawrence Cemetery.

Bates County Pioneer Dies - James S. Bell, Sr., aged 82 years, died at the home place seven miles north of this city at 1:10 o'clock Thursday, April 24, 1919, of old age. For the past thirteen years he has been in poor health, having suffered from paralysis. Mr. Bell was for many years one of the most prominent citizens of Bates county, a leading farmer and stock dealer, and had a large circle of friends. He was a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church He was a man of fine traits of character and possessed that rugged honesty characteristic of the pioneer. He was born in Virginia Aug. 10, 1836, and when a child of two years came to Missouri with his parents and settled in Cooper county, and came to Bates county in 1862. Mr. bell was united in marriage Oct. 11, 1877 to Miss Fannie Rand, a member of a prominent family, and who passed away Dec. 18, 1889. Surviving are three children: Frank Bell of Bartlesville, Okla., James S. Bell Jr., and Mrs. A. C. Collins of the home address. -- Rich Hill Review.

She was preceded in death by three siblings, Gene Williams, Ruby Wilson, and Marie Pryor. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Community Christian Church in Nevada. Interment will be in Moore Cemetery.

She was born November 15, 1929 to Raymond and Myrtle Crowder Briggs in Clinton, Missouri. Darlene is survived by a stepson, Mitch Bennett and wife Millie of Kansas City, Missouri; her cousin and caregiver, Natalie Briggs of Butler, Missouri; three brothers-in-law; a sister-in-law; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and other cousins, nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Donald Bennett.

James Lowell Bennett, 90, Plattsburg, MO, died Thursday, May 22, 2008 at Oakridge of Plattsburg in Plattsburg, MO. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 24, 2008 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, MO. Burial in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian. James was born October 9, 1917 in Long Lane, MO, the son of Benjamin Harrison and Nora A. (Buchanan) Bennett. At age nine, he lost his mother due to complications of childbirth. Several years later, his father married Hassie Burton. This occasion was marked by all attending a World Series game in St. Louis. James married Hattie Almeta Reaves on August 19, 1938, in Mount Vernon, MO. James was a WWII Navy veteran. James was a teacher and also a farmer. He and his brother-in-law built and operated Conway Lumber in Conway, MO until 1950 when he and Almeta bought land in Oklahoma City, where he built G.I. Homes. They returned to Missouri in 1952 and bought a farm west of Adrian where they resided until he returned to his love of building houses. In 1972, upon establishing himself as a reputable contractor/builder, James built many homes in and around Adrian and developed Bennett Addition. A man of strong work ethics, he built his last house at the age of 83, doing most of the work himself. James was a member of the First Baptist Church in Adrian where he served as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and treasurer. James was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Almeta, stepmother, Hassie, a sister, Thelma Knowles, a brother, John A. Bennett and infant brothers. He is survived by three children, Bonita Ferguson, Ronn Bennett and his wife, Debbie, all of Holt, MO and Pam Hill and her husband, Rick, Urich, MO; seven granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; stepsister, Flossie Wiseman, Norman, OK and nieces and nephews.

Services for Lloyd Robert Billingsley, 65 and Ruby Maxine Billingsley, 67 of Butler, who died June 1, 1986 as the result of a car train accident in Butler, were held Wednesday, June 4 at at the First Christian Church in Rich Hill. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, under the direction of Underwood-Steinbeck-Schowengerdt of Butler. Lloyd was born Jan. 3, 1921 in Rich Hill to Jesse Robert and Lela May Stuart Billingsley. Ruby was born Dec. 11, 1919 in Prescott, Kan., to Ira O. and Annie Raney Anderson. Lloyd and Ruby were married Aug. 22, 1938 and to this union five childrenwere born, Claude Robert Billingsley of Butler, Anna Mae Vest and Verna Joyce Sliver, both of Drexel, Lela June Helton of Pittsburg, Kan., and Lillian Roberta Sage of Butler, all of whom survive. Mr. and Mrs. Billingsley resided in Rich Hill area and were engaged in farming until 1972 when they moved to Butler and operated the Billingsley Service Station and garage. They were members of the First Christian Church in Rich Hill. Lloyd is further survived by one sister, Gladys Cochran of Yakima, Wash. Ruby is survived by two brothers, Charles Anderson of Columbia and Kenneth Anderson of Drexel; and three sisters, Irene Caskey of Butler, Virginia Finley of Hume and Betty Barker of Ft. Scott, Kan. Lloyd and Ruby are survived by 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Betty Louise Blakely, age 70, the daughter of Clarence Wilson and Effie Juanita (Goodwin) Blakely was born Nov. 4, 1936, in Schell City, Mo., and passed from this life on Thursday, July 5, 2007, at her home near Sheldon after an 11-month illness with leukemia. Betty attended school in Schell City graduating with the class of 1954. On Dec. 24, of that year she was united in marriage to Albert Harms Jr., and to this union two daughters and one son were born. Betty was a homemaker while the children were small, then worked for a time at the shirt factory in El Dorado Springs, Mo. But most of her working life was spent in the restaurants in Schell City both as a worker and then as an owner of Cousins Cafe. In her spare time, Betty enjoyed embroidery and camping and especially her grandchildren. She was an original member of the Modern Mothers Club, was actively involved in Schell City Community Betterment, and was a longtime member of the Schell City United Methodist Church. Her baptism took place in 1948, in a creek near Sanford Richards property. Survivors include her son Larry Harms and his wife Sandy of Independence, Mo.; her daughter, Linda Robinson and her husband Art of Sheldon, Mo.; one brother, Junior Blakely and his wife Bonnie of Schell City; 11 grandchildren, cousins, other relatives and many, many friends. Aside from Junior and her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her infant daughter Deborah Ilene who passed away March 15, 1958. Funeral services for Betty Louise Blakely were held Sunday, July 8, at the Schell City United Methodist Church. Interment was in the Green Lawn Cemetery in Schell City.

Irene Sliffe Blankenship was born September 9, 1909 to Edgar and Lizzie Sliffe near Adrian, Missouri and departed this life January 10, 1982 at the Cox Medical Center in Springfield, Missouri. Mrs. Blankenship spent her entire life near the Adrian and Altona communities. She taught school at the No. 36 School in Cass County before marriage. She was married to Oscar Blankenship August 22, 1928 at Lee's Summit, Missouri and to this union four children were born: Martha Cummings, Clinton, Missouri, Jo Anne Waite, Springfield, Missouri and Ruth Hinten, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Mrs. Blankenship is survived by her husband, four children, ten grandchildren, and one brother, Allison Sliffe of Loveland, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister. Mrs. Blankenship was an active member of the Adrian Christian Church where she had been a teacher in the Loyal Daughters' Bible School Class and where she sang in the church choir. She was called upon for special music in the community. She was active with the Altona Community Club. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 13, 1982 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian, Missouri. Burial was made in the Altona Cemetery near Adrian.

MRS. U.S. BLANKENSHIP DEAD - This community was shocked when it was announced that Mrs. U.S. Blankenship had died at her home near Altona, Wednesday, June 2nd, 1920. She was 51 years, 9 months and 28 days old. Mrs. Blankenship had been in poor health for several years but it was not generally known that her condition had been more serious recently. Minnie Myrtle Morris was born in Barry county, Missouri, August 4th, 1868. She was united in marriage with U. S. Blankenship December 24, 1884. To this union eight children were born, the eldest died in infancy. Those living are Rose, Ray, Goldie, Bessie, Blanche, Oscar and Mayme. She united with the Church of Christ in 1886, and lived a devoted Christian until her death. Mrs. Blankenship was held in the highest esteem by all who knew her. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and a kind and helpful neighbor. None was more generally respected than was Mrs. Blankenship and her death has cast a gloom over the entire community and join in expressions of sympathy for the family in this their hour of sorrow. Besides the husband and children, Mrs. Blankenship is survived by her father, A. B. Morris, her mother preceded her in death June 8th, 1913. Funeral services for Mrs. Blankenship were held from the Altona Christian church. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

Oscar S. Blankenship - Oscar Samuel Blankenship died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997 at his home east of Adrian, at the age of 94. Funeral services were held Oct. 24, at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, Mo. With the Rev. Jerry Jenkins, Kimberling City, Mo. And the Rev. Paul Burhart, Adrian, Mo. Officiating. Interment was in the Altona Cemetery, under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Adrian, Mo. Contributions in memory of Oscar may be made to the Altona Community Hall Building. Mr. Blankenship was born on Jan. 30, 1903 in Barry County, Missouri to Ulysses Grant and Minnie Myrtle (Morris) Blankenship. He moved with his family to the Altona community on Thanksgiving eve in 1905. He spent his entire life in the Altona Community. He was married to Anna Irene Sliffe on Aug. 22, 1928 and to this union was born one son and three daughters. He spent his life on the family farm north of Altona. He received his early education at the Crawford School and later attended and graduated from Gem City Business College in Quincy, Ill. He was a member of the Adrian Christian Church where he served many years as an elder. On June 1, 1984, he was united in marriage to Faye (Miller Lockard) with whom he spent his remaining years. He will be remembered as a faithful supporter of the Altona Cemetery and Community Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, four sisters and his first wife of 54 years, Irene. He leaves his wife, Faye, of the home; one son, Richard, Searcy, Ark.; three daughters, Martha Cummings, Clinton, Mo.; Jo Anne Waite, Springfield, Mo.; Ruth Hinton, Bartlesville, Okla.; two stepsons, Gene Lockard, Butler; Dale Lockard, Adrian, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Judy Schnoebelen, Butler, Mo.; ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, 17 step-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

U.G. BLANKENSHIP DIES - Pioneer Grand River Resident Was 82 Years Of Age. U. G. Blankenship, a prominent pioneer farmer of the Grand River community, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lloyd W. Brooks, at Butler, March 26. Mr. Blankenship, who was 82 years of age, had been in poor health for many months. Ulysses Grant Blankenship was born at Purdy, Barry county, Missouri, May 9, 1866. He grew to young manhood in that community. December 24, 1884, he was united in marriage to Minnie Myrtle Morris, who preceded him in death, June 2, 1920. Eight children were born to this union, the first dying in infancy. Surviving are Ross Blankenship, Purdy; Ray Blankenship, Butler; Oscar Blankenship, Adrian; Mrs. Goldie Dunn, Garden City; Mrs. Bessie Brooks, Butler; Mrs. Blanche Lyter, Williamston, Michigan; and Mrs. Mayme Thompson, Ballard. There are nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Emma Horine, Cassville, Missouri, also survives.

Larry Dean Bloesser, age 64, a resident of Richards, Mo., died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, following a heart attack at his home. He was born June 30, 1943, in Fort Scott, the son of Sonny Earl Bloesser and Mildred Kennedy Bloesser. Larry was a 1961 graduate of Richards High School. He married Vivian Nichols on July 23, 1961 in Richards. He owned and operated V&L Sales, a lawn mower and a small engine repair business. He was a member of the Richards Christian Church, Garland Masonic Lodge and the Fort Scott Scottish Rite Temple. He enjoyed collecting coins and bird watching. Survivors include his wife, Vivian, of the home; two daughters, Carmen Thrasher, of McCloud, Okla., and Shelly Lowry and husband Harry, of Chanute, Kan.; two brothers, Earl Gene Bloesser, of Raymore, Mo., and Don Bloesser, of Redfield, Kan.; two sisters, Sherry Bolyard, of Pleasanton, Kan., and Sandra Ward, of Fort Scott, Kan. Also surviving is a son-in-law, Carl Hill, Parsons; one grandson, Vincent Hill; five granddaughters, Samantha Sevart, and husband Jim, Brittani Lowry, Kelcey Lowry, Kaleene Thrasher and Jamie Thrasher; and two great-grandchildren Rhylee and Andie Sevart. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Amanda Rhea Hill. A nephew, the Rev. Bryan L. Keith, will conduct the funeral services Wednesday in the Cheney Witt Chapel, in Fort Scott. Following the funeral services there will be a cremation. Burial will be Monday, Sept. 17, at the Richland Cemetery, in Richards.

Gerald Dean Bogan, 68, of Hume, Mo., died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at his home. He was born May 28, 1941 at Hume, the son of Carl and Novella Boston Bogan. Gerald was reared in the Hume and Metz area. After the eighth grade he worked for his great uncle in Leavenworth, Kan. At 19 years of age, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving from 1960 to 1963. He was stationed in France and later in Ft. Sill, Okla. He married Sharon Kay Swink on Nov. 12, 1966. He worked for General Motors Leads plant in Kansas City, Mo., for 11 years and then entered the Boiler Makers Local 83 in Kansas City for 25 years. He was a member of the Butler Masonic Lodge No. 254. His love was farming and his family and friends. Gerald was preceded in death by his father and also an infant son, Bret Loy Bogan. Survivors include his wife, Sharon of the home; his mother, Novella Bogan Finwick of Hume; one son, Tim Bogan and Sherry of Springdale, Ark.; daughters, Meda Wisdom and Harry of Mound City, Kan.; Sherri Crand and Charles "Reb," of Hume, Missouri; one brother, Larry Bogan and Harriet of Prescott, Kan.; sisters, Joyce Cannon & Marion of Hume, and Janice Koehn and Ronnie of Adrian, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Ms. Bohrer was employed as a clerk for the IRS in Kansas City for 31 years before her retirement. Earlier, she had been employed with the Social Security Office in Kansas City. After her retirement, she was employed at the Casco Area Workshop, Harrisonville. She was a member of Federal Employees Union and a 1962 graduate of Raymore-Peculiar High School, Peculiar. She loved to read, go to movies and embroidery. Preceding her in death were her parents. Surviving are a brother, Gerald Bohrer, Adrian; a sister, Phyllis L. Lyon, Sparta; a niece, Christina Fisher; a nephew, Jeffrey Lyon Jr.; a great-nephew, Austin Fisher; two great-nieces, Miranda Fisher and Eve Killinger; other relatives and friends. He grew up in the Elkhart and Bates County area and was a farmer all of his life. He loved to hunt, fish and play pool. Coon hunting was a favorite pastime of his. He enjoyed listening to his hounds run and waiting for them to "tree". He also enjoyed raising watermelons and sold them for a number of years. He enjoyed meeting people as he sold watermelons. He was preceded in death by his parents; Edgar Thomas and Susanna Catherine, 4 sisters, and 3 brothers. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Gertrude Bolling, and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 28, 1993 at the Atkinson Chapel in Adrian, Missouri. Interment was in the Adam Howell Cemetery in Bates County, Missouri.

A Stricken Family - Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Bolling, of Elkhart township, have for several weeks been under a heavy strain of sickness. Three of four of their children have been down with typhoid fever, and part of the time two trained nurses have been in charge of the patients. Tuesday evening a daughter died of the disease, which increases their grief. Their friends unite in sympathy for the stricken family.

Minnie Bolling died April 1, 1980 at the Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler after a long illness. Minnie Alice Bolling was born June 26, 1899 at Stanley, Kans., and was the daughter of William and Emma Everett Cook. Preceding her in death were her parents, one brother and three sisters. She was adopted in 1899 by John and Eva Francis and grew up south of Amsterdam, Mo. Surviving her is one daughter, Ruby Lewis of Butler, and one sister, Mrs. Thomas Nettie Payne of Pomona, Calif., nieces, nephews and friends. At the time of her death she was a member of the Amsterdam Baptist Church. In her early years she taught school. She married Alexander Jackson Aug. 14, 1907, who was killed by lightening June 30, 1916. On Oct. 23, 1926 she was married to Charlie Bolling who died in March 1952. Services were held April 3 at the Amsterdam Baptist Church. Interment in the Adam Howell cemetery under the direction of Mangold Funeral Home of Amsterdam.

Otis Alfred Bolling, 74, of Adrian, Missouri was the son of Edgar Thomas and Suzanna Catherine (Zinn) Bolling. He died December 16, 1984 at Trinity Lutheran Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri. He was born September 27, 1910 near Butler, Missouri and spent all his life farming in the Bates County area. He served in the army from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. He was united in marriage to Gertrude Wells on October 11, 1942. He leaves his wife, Gertrude Bolling of the home, his children, Thomas and Ann Bolling, Carl and Becky Bolling, Peggy and John Scott, Cindy and Kevin Brunson, all of Adrian,Mo., Mike and Donna Bolling, Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Edgar Bolling, Adrian, Mo. and two sisters, Mrs. Frances Ellis and Mrs. Hattie Butler, Drexel; eight grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday, December 19, 1984 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, Mo. Burial was made in the Adam Howell Cemetery near Amoret, Mo.

BOOTH, Henry

Henry Booth was born in England Sept. 12, 1819, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Simon Roush, near Edina, April 22, 1907, aged 87 years, seven months and ten days. He crossed the ocean when four years of age. He was married to Henrietta Evertson March 16, 1848, who proceded him to the better land 24 years ago. To this union 8 children were born, two sons and six daughters, all of whom are now living except one daughter and son. He united with the Christian church in Bates County, this state, in 1870 and remained a faithful Christian until God saw fit to call him home. He was always a kind and faithful husband and loving father. He leaves besides his five daughters and one son, many other relatives to mourn his death. Funeral at Davis chapel April 23.

Jeannette Ruby (Nicely) Borders, 76, Nevada, entered her heavenly home on Thursday, June 19, 2008. She died at home in the presence of her loving and caring family. She had met the challenge of a cancerous brain tumor for the past year with courage and faith. She was born to Oary Nathan Nicely and Audrey Frankie (Carey) Nicely on Aug. 16, 1931. She graduated from Northeast High School, Kansas City, Mo., in 1949. She also attended Southwest Baptist College, Bolivar, Mo. She was employed at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City from 1949 to 1951. Jeannette was married to Jay W. Borders on Sept. 2, 1950, at her parents' home in Independence, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Virginia Nicely, and a nephew, Dickie Borders. She was converted to Christ when a teenager and became a member of the Beaumont Baptist Church, Kansas City, Mo. She was a member of the Bronaugh Baptist Church, Bronaugh, at the time of her death. Her survivors include, two sons, and their wives, Jay and Sharon Borders and James and Aletta Borders, both of Nevada; two daughters and their husbands, Joy and Randy Cottle, Seymour, Mo., and Janet and Marc Jacques, Rochester, N.H.;11 grandchildren, Michele and Todd Leonard, Melissa and Rob Forester, Maria and Byron Hoover, Andrea and Jonathan Pyle, Randy Borders, Heather Cottle, Tyler and Jill Borders, Scott and Kristy Borders, Natalie Jacques, Shane Cottle and Audrey Jacques; 14 great-grandchildren, with a 15th due in December; three sisters and their husbands, Alice and Bruce Wilson, Hazelwood, Mo., Margaret and her late husband Richard Borders, El Dorado Springs, and Mary and Bob Simpson, Grain Valley, Mo.; one brother and his wife, James and Kathy Nicely, Edmond, Okla. and a host of family and friends. She will be remembered as a loving person and a story-teller, who told stories of the Civil War learned from Grandma Carey and shared stories from her childhood. She loved the Lord and had read the Bible through numerous times. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 23, at Calvary Baptist Church, Nevada. Lois Mae Boyd, age 84, of Nevada died peacefully at her home in Nevada on Friday, Dec. 1, 2006. She was born on Oct. 24, 1922, in Nevada to Lewis Robert Bryan and Ida Mae Darrow Bryan. On Aug. 31, 1939, she was married in Rich Hill, Mo., to Murl W. Boyd and he preceded her in death on June 7, 1995. Lois attended Nevada schools and worked at the Nevada State Hospital as a dental assistant for 29 years until her retirement in 1985. Lois enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Twilight Bowling League in Nevada and was a past Boy Scout leader. She was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Nevada. Survivors include four children, Barbara R. Moore of Nevada, Sharon Maxine Sutcliffe of Joplin, Randy T. Boyd and his wife Mickie of Nevada, and Ricky Bryan Boyd of Nevada; 18 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Lee Bryan of Nevada. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Dec. 4, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. A private committal will follow at a later date.

Marion Frank Boyles, 79, Garden City, died Aug. 21, 2008, at Research Medical Center, Kansas City. He was born Nov. 6, 1928, in Bates County, the son of Marion David and Eliza Ellen (Cox) Boyles. Dec. 29, 1957, he married Ellen Arlene Carnagie in Joplin. Mr. Boyles was employed as a truck driver for Randy Mickelberry Trucking in Harrisonville until his retirement in 1999. He enjoyed his friends at Old Cedar Inn and was friendly and outgoing. Frank had lived in Lamar and Harrisonville before moving to Garden City in 1984. Preceding him in death by were his wife, Ellen, on June 4, 2003; two brothers, Joe and George; and a sister, Goldie.Surviving are two sisters, Frances Jones, Garnett, Kan., and Chesley Miller, Blue Springs; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.Casket bearers were Ivan Cumpton, Dillard Meins, Ronnie Meins, John Morris, Joe Petty and Marty Seleman. Services were August 25 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City. Burial was in the Garden City Cemetery, Garden City.

Wilfred Kenneth "Bill" Bracher, son of Oscar and Hilda (Rapp) Bracher, was born February 4, 1934 on his parents' farm northwest of Rockville, Missouri. He departed this life May 20, 2010 on that same farm where he had lived for just over 76 years. Bill was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Prairie City. He was baptized March 11, 1934 and confirmed May 23, 1948. He attended Fairmount and Zion Lutheran School. He served in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1957 as a Crew Chief on F-86 fighter aircraft. On December 28, 1957 Bill was united in Marriage to Delores Nichols of Appleton City. They were blessed with three children. Bill was a farmer. He liked the outdoors - hunting, fishing and camping. He looked forward each year for the coming of the purple martins and hummingbirds. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and Friday night card games. Preceding Bill in death were his parents, a son-in-law Roy Watson and two brothers-in-law, Wilber Van Winkle and Donald Wiltz. Survivors include Delores, his wife of 52 years; his three children, Russell Bracher and wife Janet of Montrose, Missouri, Roxanne and husband Edward Jurgensmeyer of Montrose, Missouri and Ranae and husband Daris Magoffin of Rockville, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Travis, Trevor and Katelyn Bracher, Tyler Jurgensmeyer and wife Stacey, Noah Jurgensmeyer, Bruce Watson and wife Scarlett and Anna Magoffin; five great-grandchildren, Cayden Jurgensmeyer, Charlene, Roy, Sahara and Sibylla Watson; and one sister Leona Wiltz of Appleton City, Missouri. Ralph Eugene Bradbury, 52, Odessa, died Nov. 25, 2007 at St. Mary's Medical Center, Blue Springs. He was born Aug. 18, 1955, the son of Glenn Paul and Mary Louise Stumpff Bradbury, in Warrensburg.He was married on April 2, 1983 to Judith Lynn Kidwell in Raytown. Bradbury grew up in Holden and had lived in Raytown before moving to Odessa in 1988. He was a 1973 graduate of Raytown High School and a 2005 graduate of M.T.T.I., Kansas City. He also was a graduate of John Barnes Advance Myofascial Therapist Training. He was self-employed, owner and operator of Inspirational Therapies, LLC, licensed massage therapist and an advanced myofascial therapist. He had owned and operated Bradbury Construction and Remodeling, Raytown; was maintenance supervisor of the Odessa R-7 School District from 1988-94, and was employed by Dowell Construction. Bradbury was a minister in the Unity Life Church, obtaining his license in 2007. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Louise Stumpff Bradbury, in 1989. Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Gene Bradbury, Blue Springs; a daughter, Candice Bradbury, Odessa; his father, formerly of Holden, now of Roscoe; a sister, Linda Bradbury, Raytown and a granddaughter, Anna Marie Bradbury. The family received friends Thursday, Nov. 29 at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, Odessa. Cremation with private scattering at a later date.

Ralph was married to Opal Mae Harris on June 24, 1947 in Ft. Scott, Kan. They were blessed with four sons. Ralph spent most of his life in Montrose. He was a mechanic and owned a small shop with his son, Buster. Ralph was preceded in death by three sons, Ray Allen, Sammy Lee and Ronnie Eugene; one great-grandson, Matthew Lane; his parents, Henry and Ida Breshears; two brothers, Jake and Noah and one nephew, Donnie Breshears. Ralph is survived by his wife Opal Mae of the home; one son, Buster and his wife Margaret of Montrose; two grandsons, Jason and his wife, Melissa of Ft. Hood, Texas and Mathew and his wife, Tammy of Deepwater; four great-grandchhildren, Caitlyn, Emma and Ray Allen of Ft. Ethel Elizabeth Brewer, age 83, former resident of Cavalry Crossing Apartments, Fort Scott, Kan., died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, at Fort Scott Medicalodge. She was born Oct. 23, 1922, in Greensburg, Kan., the daughter of Will J. and Helena J. Unruh. Ethel was a 1941 graduate of Nevada High School and graduated in 1946 from Salt City Business College in Hutchinson, Kan. She married Paul M. Brewer on July 31, 1950, in Fayetteville, Ark. He preceded her in death on March 5, 1986. Ethel was retired following 25 years of employment as department manager for Farm and Home Savings Company, Nevada. She also worked for seven years with Nevada Wal-Mart. In her earlier years she was an active leader with Boy Scouts in Hutchinson and Nevada. She was a Fred Harvey Girl in 1945 in Newton, Kan. She was an adult Girl Scout member since 1970, host site manager for Bourbon County Share Program, and did volunteer work for the Moss House and the RSVP program. With her love for gardening, she attended to the flowers planted at Cavalry Crossing Apartments. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Elizabeth Lemmon and husband Melvin, Fort Scott, and Martha Jane Sander and husband Daroan, Nevada; one stepson, Tom Shanley and wife Linda, Hutchinson; three sisters, Elda Becker, Halstead, Kan., Luella Williamson, Gahanna, Ohio, and Ruth Dyer, Benson, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Darrell Sander, Jennifer Sander, Amy Lemmon and Taylor Ann Lemmon; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Victor Unruh, and three sisters, Wilma Unruh, Martha Unruh and Flora Smith. Tim Woodring, pastor of senior involvement at Community Christian Church, conducted funeral services today, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. Melvin L. Briggs, 77, Stanley, Kan., passed away Friday, September 12, 2008. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the First Baptist Church of Stilwell, Stilwell, Kan. Burial in Floral Hills Cemetery. Melvin was born on May 18, 1931, in Butler, Mo., to R.C. and Jessie Lee Shultz Briggs and was a member of the Amsterdam Baptist Church. He followed his father's footsteps by starting his own sod business. Melvin was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, during the Korean war serving his country proudly. He was united in marriage to Norma Eisele to which two sons were born, Steve and Bryan. Later, Melvin was joined in marriage to Susan Luttrell, to which a son, Mark, and a daughter, Leann, was born. Melvin was known in the KC area as the grandfather of the sod business. In the early 70s, Melvin represented his fellow sod farmers as president of the K.C. Turf Association. For several years he served as the Kansas State Representative for the American Sod Producers Association. He was also known for selling the Zoysia plugger and plugs which were shipped worldwide. Another one of his accomplishments was co-inventing the B & E mower. In his attempt to retire, he continued in the nursery business and a large cattle operation. His hobbies were working, fishing and winning at the craps table. He loved traveling to the Turf Producers International Convention and touring other sod farms. Melvin met many friends from all areas of the world. Another one of his joys in life was attending local auctions. Melvin was most known for helping others start their own sod business, giving advice and helping anyone in need. He is dearly loved and will be missed by his family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Donald, Riley Jr. and Hubert. Ella Mae (Burris) Brooks - Ella Mae Brooks, 74, Nevada, MO, lost her battle to leukemia on July 23, 2008 at her home. She was born June 12, 1934 in Bloomfield, NE, to Oran Everett and Bonavie Emalyne (LaFarge) Burrus. She married Nelson Ray Brooks on June 27, 1953 at the Methodist Church in Hume, MO, and he survives of the home. Ella Mae attended Rich Hill schools for 1st-3rd grades, Prairie Union Grade School (a country school) for 4th and 6th grades as she was allowed to bypass 5th grade, and then Hume R-8 for grades 7-12. She graduated from Hume High School in 1951 right along with her husband. Ella Mae worked for the Hume R-8 Schools as secretary to the superintendent for two years before getting married in 1953. She stayed at home and babysat, sewed and did alteration work, and was active in her two children's school activities. She began a career with Sears Roebuck & Co. in Nevada in September of 1968 until they closed in December of 1982. Then, she transferred to Overland Park Sears Store Group Office in January 1983 ordering for buyers until they closed the Metcalf South office in 1988. She was then hired by Don and Cindy Wells, of Thomas Pharmacy, as a cashier, then accountant for the store, and eventually a pharmacy technician. The business was sold in 1991 to Dan Saleaumua, former Kansas City Chiefs player, who opened The Medicine Shoppe and Ella Mae worked there until her retirement in 1996. Ella Mae committed her life to Christ at the age of 16 at the Pleasanton Baptist Church. She transferred her membership to Calvary Baptist of Nevada in 1953, and then joined the First Baptist Church of Nevada in 1989. Other memberships included O.E.S. No. 53 (Order of the Eastern Star), Vernon County BPW, softball and bowling teams, den mother for Cub Scout Pack 42, cookie chairman for Girl Scouts, and president of Franklin School and NHS PTA's. She also enjoyed spending time with family, vacationing in Colorado, and reading. Survivors in addition to her husband, Nelson, include one son, Randy Brooks, and his wife, Amy, of Nevada; one daughter, Ranea Schulze, and her husband, Ron, of Nevada; six grandchildren: Christopher Schulze, and his wife, Jenny, of Republic; Kyle Schulze, of Nevada; Bob, Amanda and Bryan Brooks, of Florida; Isabella Brooks, of Nevada; three step-grandchildren: Samantha, Tayrin, and Kodie Schmitt, of Nevada; and a great-grandchild due in January 2009; one sister, Dorothy "Tiny" Busbea, Blue Springs, MO; one brother, Oran Allen Burrus, Nevada; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; one niece, Lisa Burrus; three nephews: Oran Everett Burrus, Travis Alan Burrus, and David Lee Busbea; one great-nephew, Khalab Cargill; and four brothers-in-law: Melvin, Tom, and Bob Brooks, and Darrell Busbea. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 26 at the First Baptist Church in Nevada, MO. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery.

David F. Brown was born April 23, 1926, in Butler, the son of Jacob and Rhoda Hartzel Brown. He passed away April 12, 2006, at Medical Lodge of Butler at the age of 79. David was united in marriage Feb. 2, 1946, in Butler, to Juanita Black. To this union, five children were born. David was a retired truck driver. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita, on July 10, 2004. He was also preceded in death by two sons, David Alan and Glenn Russell; his parents; one sister, Violet; and one great grandson. David is survived by two sons, Carl Edward Brown, Wichita, Kan., and Harold W. Brown and his wife, Joyce, Belton; one daughter, April Nichols and husband Marion, Rich Hill; one brother, Kenneth Brown and his wife Eileen, Burnet, Texas; nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Services were held Saturday, April 15, at Heuser Funeral Home. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Rich Hill.

BROWN, Dwight Darrell

Dwight Darell Brown, 65, Harwood, was born August 5, 1936 and departed this life on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at his home. He was the oldest of four children born to the union of the late Clifton and Veva June (Clevenger) Brown. Dwight graduated from Harwood grade school in 1950 and from Walker High School in 1954. After his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy making the military his career. On July 16, 1968, he was advanced to the rank of Chief Petty Officer holding that rank until his retirement in 1974. His career saw him serving on six ships of the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets with two tours of shore duty and duty aboard our Nation's first helicopter carrier. For his years of dedicated service he was awarded the following service ribbons and medals with battle stars; National Defense with star; China Service; five Good Conduct awards; Armed Forces Expedionary with star; Vietnam with three stars; Meritories Unit Commendation, Vietnam and Combat Action. After retirement, Dwight returned to Harwood where he cared for his mother until her death in 1994. He was a member of the Harwood Methodist Church, Royal Neighbors of America and was a member of the U.S. Navy Memorial and Retired Enlisted Association. Survivors include two brothers, Doyle Brown-Harwood and Larry Brown-Nevada; one sister, Arleta Wilson-Rich Hill; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Services were held at Friday, Nov. 23, at the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City. Interment was in the Green Mound Cemetery in Harwood.

George Francis Quincy Brown, 91, of Appleton City, passed away Nov. 28, 1999 at the Ellett Memorial Hospital in Appleton City. He was born Jan. 22, 1908 in Bates County, the son of Irk Merton and Minnie Maud (Browning) Brown. He attended the Reynard Elementary School and Appleton City High School. He then attended the Kemper Military School at Booneville, graduating in 1926. He went to Kansas City and spent a couple of years with TWA as a pilot. He then moved back to Appleton City in the Round Prairie Community and began farming. On Nov. 1, 1931, he was united in marriage to Lena Lucille Schapeler and established their home in the Round Prairie Community. To this union six children were born. Quincy accepted Christ Dec. 9, 1935 and became a member of the Round Prairie Babtist Church where he served as his health permitted. He served on the Reynard School Board and was involved in the building of the Hudson R-9 School as board president. He served on the Citizens Bank board of directors for 49 years, retiring in October of 1986. He was a 50 year member of the Appleton City Masonic Lodge 412 A.F. & A.M. He loved farming and raising cattle and hogs. He enjoyed fishing and traveling. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter, Lodema Lucille. He is survived by his wife Lena Lucille Brown, five children, Warren Quincy Brown of the home; Esther Lou and husband Chuck Thompson of Alamo, Texas; George William Brown of Carrollton, Texas; Marilyn Bradley of Denton, Texas and Eddie Brown and wife, Joyce of Appleton City; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren and one brother, Trucy Brown and wife, Frances of Appleton City and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Hill and Son Funeral Home in Appleton City Wednesday, Dec. 1. Interment was in the Round Prairie Cemetery in Appleton City.

NEWTON BROWN DEAD - Newton Brown died at the home of his sister, Mrs. D. C. Cloud in Altona, Monday, March 20, 1916 aged 81 years, 2 months and 17 days. Death resulted from injuries, an account of which is given in another column of The Journal. Mr. Brown was born in Polk county, Mo., and came to Bates county in 1856, and for sixty years had been a respected citizen of Grand River township. Mr. Brown was one of the charter members of the Altona Baptist Church and remained a member of same until death. He was never married. Funeral services for Mr. Brown were held from the Altona Baptist church Tuesday afternoon.

William "Bill" W. Brown, age 95, of Collins passed away Nov. 15, 2007 at Sac-Osage Hospital, Osceola. He was born March 18, 1912 at Weaubleau to Perry and Ida Brown. He was a farmer and longtime area resident of Colins. He liked to fish, hunt, play pitch and was a fan of the Royals. He is survived by a son and wife, Jack and Mary Brown of Deepwater; two grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Barbara and wife, Hazel Brown. Memorial services will be Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007, at Hathaway-Peterman Funeral Home Chapel, Wheatland.

Charlotte Flashes - The body of L. O. Browning a structural steel worker who met instant death while employed at Cincinnati, Ohio, arrived at Virginia January 1st, 1926, where his funeral was conducted in the Christian Church, after which his remains were laid to rest in the Howel cemetery by the side of his mother who preceded him several years ago. He was a son of Lee Browning. Besides his wife who accompanied the body, he leaves his father and sister, Mrs. Ray Jundy and a number of uncles, aunts and cousins in this vicinity and his aunt, Mrs. Will Burnhardt, and two sons of Kansas City who attended his funeral to mourn his untimely departure. He lived here until about seventeen years old. He was an ex-service man and carried insurance to the amount of $10,000.

Death of Cicero J. Browning - Cicero J. Browning, a well known farmer of the Virginia neighborhood, died Thursday morning, October 5. He is survived by a large family and many friends in his community. Funeral services were conducted from his home in Charlotte township, Friday afternoon, October 6, and burial was made in Adam Howe cemetery. The following history of the life of Mr. Browning has been given to The Press: Cicero Jasper Browning, son of Jasper and Amanda Browning, was born in Bates County, Missouri, April 12, 1860, and passed away on the farm where he was born, October 5, 1933, being at the time of his death past 73 years of age. He was united in marriage to Nancy Jane Heckadon, August 20, 1884. To this union were born nine children, seven of whom survive, two having preceded him in death. He is survived by his widow and the following children: Arthur L., Douglas B. and Marlin A., of Butler; Oral and James Levy Browning of Kansas City; Beulah Boling of Osawatomie, Kansas, and Edna Mitts of Nevada, Mo. He is also survived by a half brother and a half sister, 25 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, besides a circle of relatives and friends who are greatly grieved at his departure. He was a kind and thoughtful companion and a just and devoted father. Having spent his entire life in the community where he died, he won the high regard and esteem of a large number of neighbors and sincere friends. Brother Browning, with his faithful and devoted companion, has by his long and useful life, contributed much to the well-being of the world and humanity in their noble family of children. Time alone will tell what the harvest of a well spent life shall be when the sheaves shall be gathered in.

Virginia Items - Miss Mattie Dudley was born in Mason county, Ill., May, 1861. Her father, John W. Dudley, moved to Bates county in the fall of 1869 and bought a farm four miles west of Butler. He died May, 1877. Miss Mattie was married to Lee Browning in 1884. She died May 2, 1899. To this union two children were born; she leaves two brothers and an aged mother. We have been acquainted with Mrs. Browning since her marriage. She was of a kind and loving disposition to every one she came in contact with, always had a pleasant smile on her face. She and her husband always made people welcome at their house, friend or foe always received kind treatment at their home. She was always ready, so far as in her power, to relieve the suffering. During their financial trouble she was a great help to her husband. She worked hard. She loved her two children, Miss Minnie and brother, and it was her greatest care to look after her children. It seemed hard for her to leave her children when they needed her care so much, knowing the many temptations they are subject to in this unfriendly world, and also the aged mother who is bordering on the edge of the grave. Rev. Jones of Butler, preached her funeral from Luke 23:42, "Nevertheless not my will but Thine be done," after which her body was taken to the Howell grave yard and laid in its last resting place.

Dorothy Brownsberger passed to eternal life at her residence at The Rose Estates in Overland Park, Kansas on January 21, 2008. She was one day shy of her 89th birthday. She was a woman who loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. She lived her faith. Dorothy (nee Duewel) was born January 22, 1919 to Minnie Lillian Wally and Wallace Carl Duewel in Kansas City. She was raised in and spent most of her life in the Montrose, Missouri area. Minnie, her mother, was a homemaker and Carl, her father, operated a mechanic shop and was an accomplished Harley Davidson motorcycle racer. Dorothy's father passed when she was only six years old and she treasured her memories of him. Dorothy attended Montrose grade school and high school. Dorothy loved to dance and she met her future husband one rainy evening at a Montrose dance. Since it was raining, LeRoy Brownsberger, a farmer, did not have to work and was able to attend the dance. The story goes that Dorothy was trying to sit on the edge of a table, started to fall and LeRoy caught her and reassured her, "I won't let you fall." They fell in love and married on February 22, 1941. They were blessed with two children, Marsha and Walt. Dorothy and LeRoy enjoyed 63 years of marriage. Dorothy may have been small in stature but she was strong and never ceased to amaze her family. During this last year's Christmas celebration, Walt asked Dorothy to bless us and the meal the family was about to share. She promptly said the blessing in German, then she repeated it in English. She was so proud to have been given that honor and her family was so proud to have her as their "Queen Bee." Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband on October 7, 2004. Dorothy will be missed by her daughter, Marsha Thornburg of Appleton City, Missouri and son, Walt Brownsberger and his wife Penny of Overland Park, Kansas. She is also survived by her six grandchildren Edie, Brenda, John, Bill, Donna and Nick. There are nine great-grandchildren Jon, Nicole, Madeline, Joseph, Noah, Marcello, Mariella, Christopher and Francesca. She is also survived by her brother, Wally Duewel and his wife Mary of Kansas City, Missouri; a brother-in-law Martin Brownsberger of Montrose, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews. Service: Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montrose, Missouri on Friday, January 25, 2008. Interment: St. Mary's Cemetery in Montrose.

Wilbur C. "Speedy" Bruegger, age 86, of Nevada, passed away on Oct. 14, 2007, in Joplin, Mo. Wilbur was born on Aug. 17, 1921, to Edwin John and Mattie Bell Keys Bruegger and reared in Bushton, Kan. He lived in Farmington, N.M., for 38 years; Hutchinson, Kan., for 4 years and had lived in Nevada, since 2003. He was a graduate of Bushton High School in 1939 and was an alumni of Fort Hays State University. He served in the United States Army during WWII. He worked in retail sales and as a repairman with Jones & Laughlin Oil Field Company for 15 years. He was a banker at First National Bank and Wells Fargo Bank, both in Farmington. Mr. Bruegger was also a member of the Bushton United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of Sigma Tau Gamma at Fort Hays State University. Survivors include one brother, Virgil Bruegger, of Nevada, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kenneth. Henry Lewis Brummett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Brummett, was born September 24, 1879 near Rowena, Kentucky and departed this life February 23, 1965 at the age of 85 years, 4 months and 28 days. He came to the state of Missouri in the year 1906 and settled in the vicinity of Altona where he lived until 1962 when he moved to Adrian. On August 11, 1900 he was united in marriage to Polly Ann Brown at Cabel, Kentucky by Rev. James Shoat. To this union five children were born, one daughter who died in infancy, a daughter, Francis, died at the age of one year. He is survived by two sons, Charley and Norman, one daughter, Lucille McCoy all of Adrian, one grandson, James L. McCoy of Riverside, Calif. And two great grandchildren, Kevin and Valerie McCoy also of Riverside, California, one sister, Nervene Brown of Jamestown, Kentucky and one brother, Owen Brummett of Divernon, Illinois. Funeral services were held at the Six Chapel Thursday, February 25, 1965. Burial was in the Altona Cemetery.

DROPPED DEAD IN GARDEN- John R. Brummett, 74 years old, suffered a heart attack last Friday, while working in his garden at Altona, and fell over dead; John Chitty, who was working in a field just across the fence, noticed him at the time and went to his aid. The body was lifeless when reached by Mr. Chitty. Coroner Rollin H. Smith came and investigated the circumstances and ordered the body brought to the Creath & Six funeral parlors. Mr. Brummett had lived at Altona only a few weeks and is not known in this community. John Russell Brummett, son of Banner and Elvira Brummett, was born at Humansville, Mo., December 29, 1863. His age at the time of death was 74 years, 3 months and 24 days. He was united in marriage to Mary Cole, February 15, 1886, who preceded him in death January 22, 1932. To this union five children were born, 3 daughters and 2 sons; Mrs. Joe DeShazer, Adrian; Mrs. Chas. Sulphus, Sheridan, Mo.; Home Brummett, Burlington Junction, Mo.; Mrs. Jesse Harris, Council Bluff, Ia.; and Banner Brummett, deceased. One brother, E. R. Brummett of Bonville, S. Dakota, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Pfeiffer of Marysville, also survive. He was a member of the South Methodist Church at North Grove, Mo. Funeral services were held from the Creath & Six chapel Sunday afternoon. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery.

He lived his entire life on a farm in and near Adrian. After he retired from farming he moved to Adrian in the year 1964. His survivors include one sister, Lucile McConnell, Adrian; one nephew, James McCoy and wife Eva; one great nephew Kevin McCoy and one great niece Valarie McCoy all of Grandview, Mo. Graveside services were held November 11, 1977 at the Altona Cemetery.

Harry Leonard "Buck" Brundridge age 79, of Hermitage, Mo., passed away at his home on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006, following a lengthy illness. He was born on Nov. 15, 1926, in Vernon County, to William Cleveland and Mary Edna Brundridge. He married Wilma Geneva Walker, on Aug. 2, 1947, who survives of the home. Harry Leonard or "Buck" as he was known to family and friends was born and reared in Vernon County and after a brief employment in a shipyard in Seneca, Ill., enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17. He participated in several amphibious landings in the Pacific during World War II, working mostly with the Australian Army as a communication specialist. After World War II he re-enlisted in the Navy and served aboard several ships. At the time the Korean War erupted he was aboard the Aircraft Carrier Phillipine Sea providing air support for the U.S. Forces in Korea. On Jan. 1, 1960 he was commissioned an Ensign from the enlisted ranks as an operation/communication specialist and served as operation officer and navigator aboard the heavy hull repair ship Klondike for two years. This was followed by tours as communications officer, naval weapons station, China Lake, Calif.; naval communication station, Guam; operations officer and later executive officer, naval communications project officer. His last tour was as communication/electronics adviser to the Royal Thai Navy, Bangkok, Thailand, where he remained until his retirement as lieutenant commander on Aug. 1, 1972. In 1973 he returned to school for one year to supplement his higher education commenced and carried on over his years of active duty. He then accepted a position with the city of Flagstaff, Ariz., where he remained until June of 1977, when he resigned to teach a technical course in environmental engineering at Yavapai College, Prescott, Ariz. When this contract expired he retired in full to beautiful Hermitage, where he enjoyed his hobbies of family genealogical research, hunting, fishing, square dancing, line dancing, amateur radio, and his computer. He enjoyed helping his daughter, Carol train her search and rescue dogs. He enjoyed his time spent on fishing trips with his brother, Joe to Canada and Arkansas. He is survived by two sons, Harry "Bucky" Leonard Jr. and his wife Grace, William Eugene and wife Carrie; and one daughter, Carol Ann and husband Steve; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Sisters and brothers surviving are Ruby Cook, Weeki, Wachee, Fla., Freada Fleming, Fort Scott, Kan., Doris Quackenbush, Nevada, Peggy Smith, Boulder, Colo., Joe Brundridge, Kansas City, Mo.; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Harry Wesley in 1971, and Cecil Dean in 1948. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the Hathaway-Peterman Funeral Home, Wheatland, Mo., with full military honors. Graveside services will be at Virgil City Cemetery, El Dorado Springs.

BRUNSON, Jane

Jane Brunson was born in Indiana, September 7, 1846. She was married to Lonson Smith January 2, 1867. To this union were born four girls, one of whom has preceded the mother by many years to the land of great majority, and three survive her; Mrs. G. C. Clark of Appleton City; Mrs. J. T. Horner of Oklahoma; and Mrs. J. R. Pollard of North Dakota. Her husband died March 5, 1909. Subsequent to that event she lived with her sister Heppie in the north part of Appleton City about two years ago. Since that time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. G. E. Clark at whose home she died February 19, 1917 at the age of 70 years, 6 months, and 12 days. She became a Christian in early womanhood and died in that faith. She has been a citizen of this state for about forty two years. Her funeral services were held at the home where she died on February 20, 1917, in the presence of a large and sympathetic audience after which the remains were interred in Meyers Cemetery.

Rita M. Bryan, age 73, died on August 1, 2008, after a lengthy illness. She was born to Lawrence and Ella Bryan on August 14, 1934 in Garnett, Kansas and grew up in Butler, MO. After attending college at Warrensburg she entered the School of Medical Technology at St. Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, MO and worked in her profession for 40 years before retiring in 1995. Rita enjoyed traveling, reading and especially gardening. She is survived by one brother, Lawrence Bryan and his wife Norma, and one sister, Gloria Pyeatt, many nieces and nephews, her friend of many years, Barbara Allmand, and her beloved dog, Mollie. Private graveside services will be held at Mt. Moriah Cemetery. (Mt. Moriah & Freeman)

Mary Ola Buckles, age 83, formerly of the Walker and Schell City areas died on Friday, July 18, 2008 at Christian Health Care in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born on March 4, 1925 in Stotesbury, MO to Henry Lawrence Bloesser and Kittie Frances Martin Bloesser. On December 19, 1943 she was married to Emmett Lewis Buckles and he preceded her in death in 1978. Mary worked a number of years in Nevada at Nelly Don, the Nevada State Hospital, Kraft Foods, and for the Walker School District from 1973 until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of the Walker Christian Church, The Order of the Eastern Star #53 in Nevada and had received her 50 year membership pin several years ago. Mary who was also known for her musical ability was at one time an active member of the Crazy 8 Band which played at area nursing homes. Survivors include one son, Charles L. "Larry" Buckles and his wife Barbara of Walker, MO, one daughter, Nancy McCrery and her husband Richard of Nevada, four grandchildren, Kim Dade and her husband Tim of Walker, Kerry Jennings and her husband Darl of Nevada, Crystal Bearce and her husband Jack of Butler, and Eric McCrery and his wife Heather of Leland, MS, four great grandsons, Aaron Dade, Ethan Dade, Damon Jennings, and Dirk Jennings all of Nevada, one sister, Corinne Oskee, Nevada, one brother, James E. Bloesser, Fresno, CA and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Robert Charles Bloesser and Harry Joe Bloesser. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at the Green Lawn Cemetery, Schell City, MO.

Surviving are his wife Donna; children, James Jr., Kevin and John Burch; Jean Bolan, Ruby Bradley, Paula Chavez, Marsha Harshner and Dawn Schnaltz; a brother Bill Burch; sisters, Helen Nida and Mildred Davis; 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Services were July 30 at Cullen Funeral Home, Raymore. Graveside services were July 31 at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Linn Creek.

OBITUARY - Mrs. Iva Fenton Burris was born in the vicinity of Burdett, August 17, 1889. At the age of 21 years she was united in marriage to Charles Burris. She was converted in her girl-hood and united with the Presbyterian Church, Sharon; in which faith she did live until the Lord called her home, October 9th, 1915. She was survived by her husband, two sisters, one brother, other relatives and a host of friends. Her remains were laid to rest in the Burdette cemetery.

Joseph Eden Burris, 83, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, at Webb City Health and Rehabilitation, Webb City, Mo., where he had lived the past 15 months. He was born Sept. 11, 1924, in Nevada, to Charles Thomas Burris and Nora Lee Buzzard Burris, He married Bertha D. Collins, on Jan. 24, 1947, in Nevada, and she preceded him in death in 1998. Joe was reared in Nevada and spent most of his life here. He retired from Nevada State Hospital in 1984 after 20 years of service. Survivors include four daughters, Lorna Steelman, Kodiak, Ark., Diana Tidwell, Federal Heights, Colo., Donna Clark, Independence, Mo., and Kelly (Debra) Mayfield, Webb City; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and several close nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Bertha, he was preceded in death by one son, Carl Wesley Burns; one granddaughter, April Davis; two sisters, Lillie Mae McClure and Bertha Edna Bayne, and eight brothers, Earl Clifford Burris, Claud Douglas Burris, Arthur Lilburn Burris, Charles Lee Burris, Harry Edward Burris, David Everett Burris, Thomas Eugene Burris, and James Paul Burris. Memorial services will be held on Friday, Nov. 30, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.

Ruth Butcher, of Nevada, Mo., was born Nov. 28, 1932, in Grand Island, Neb., the daughter of Jess and Dora Metheny. She passed away on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at KU Medical Center. She was united in marriage to Leo Butcher on Dec. 24, 1956, in Clarks, Neb., and he preceded her in death in April 1988. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was employed at Cottey College from 1976 to 2006 in the food service division and loved to cook. She was also a member of the crafters club and enjoyed playing dominos. Survivors include one son, Jess Butcher and his wife, Carol of Nevada; two grandsons, Matthew Butcher and his wife Tamarra, and Justin Butcher; friend, Cas Parrish. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

She was born Oct. 2, 1922, in Bronaugh, Mo., to Walter Henry Butterfield and Effie May Starke Butterfield. Ruth was born and reared in Bronaugh and spent virtually her entire life in Vernon County. She graduated from Bronaugh High School. Ruth was a member of the Bronaugh Christian Church. Survivors include two brothers, Dale Butterfield and Blaine Butterfield, both of Nevada, Mo.; numerous nieces and nephews; and her Moore-Few Care Center family.
