Adolph A. Maas, Sr., 83, Canon City, Colo., formerly of this area, died Sunday in a nursing home in Canon City. He was born in James, S.D., and had lived in Kansas City most of his life before he moved to Colorado 12 years ago. Mr. Maas was a painting contractor before he retired and was a member of Local 9 of the Painters Union. He was a Lutheran. He leaves three sons, Ronald P. Maas, Canon City, Gerald H. Maas, Modesto, Calif., and Adolph A. Maas, Jr., Florida; two brothers, Ernest Maas, Waterloo, Iowa, and Rudolph Maas, Delray Beach, Fla.; five sisters, Mrs. Agnes Ortman, Mrs. Ruth Fabel, Mrs. Hertha Sassman and Mrs. Ida Curtis of Waterloo and Mrs. Lentchen Weidner, Glendive, Mont.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be Thursday at the Floral Hills Chapel; burial in Floral Hills Cemetery.

Maas; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alva Hooper, of the home; four brothers, Albert Hooper, Jack Hooper, Richard Hooper and Kenneth Hooper, and three sisters, Alice Hooper, Daisy Hooper and Billie Hooper, all of the home. Funeral services will be Saturday at the Forster Chapel. Burial will be in Ballard, Mo.

Earl Randall Maffett, 80, Bronaugh, Mo., died Aug. 2, 2006, at Medicalodge of Fort Scott, following a lengthy illness. He was born on Sept. 24, 1925, in Fort Scott, to Earl Henry Maffett and Ethel Blubaugh Maffett. On April 10, 1955, he was married to Betty Saathoff in Bronaugh, and she survives of the home. Earl was a graduate of Fort Scott High School and Fort Scott Junior College. He held the bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and specialists in education degrees from Pittsburg State University. He was a licensed psychologist. Earl worked in the Bronaugh School System from 1954-'56 and again from 1974-'79 as a counselor and school psychological examiner. He worked 18 years at the Nevada State Hospital, taught psychology at Cottey College in Nevada from 1967-'70 and worked several years at the Nevada Mental Health Clinic. Earl came to the Bronaugh community in 1954 when he purchased the farm where he and Betty lived the past 51 years. He was a member of the Bronaugh Christian Church, Mensa, the Missouri Psychological Association and the American Psychological Association. Survivors in addition to his wife, Betty, include three children, Linda Woody and her husband, Mike, Carthage, Mo., Larry Maffett and his wife, Alice, Redfield, Kan., and Bill Maffett, Bronaugh; five grandchildren, Cherie Grant, James Woody, Heather Marcum, and Amber Moffatt; one great-grandson, Aidan Marcum; and one brother, Ronald Maffett, Houston, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Doris Maffett Jack. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Fort Scott.

Mr. Albert Main, son of Siberas and Anna Main, was born in Dayton, Ohio, February 1, 1871, and died May 7, 1955 at the Butler Memorial hospital at the age of 84 years, three months and six days. He was united with the Primitive Baptist church in the year 1916. At the age of five he moved with his parents and settled in a community now known as Main City, where his father was minister of the Primitive Baptist church. He was united in marriage to Catherine A. Henderson, August 21, 1896 (Note: should be Mar 7 1895) and to this union five children were born. His wife, and two sons, Simon and Albert and one great granddaughter, preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn, three daughters, Mrs. Grace Smithers, Sema, Kans.; Mrs. Leona Lowry, Iola, Kans., and Mrs. Ada Fritts, Adrian, Mo., where he made his home; one sister, Ollie Harbaugh and a brother, Perry Main of southern Missouri; ten grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Bethel church, Monday, May 9 with interment in the Adam Howe cemetery.

Mrs. Fritts' Brother Dies - Albert Main, 38 years old, farmer residing in Amsterdam community, passed away at the Butler Memorial hospital Thursday evening, October 7. Mr. Main had been ill only a short time. Mr. Main was a brother of Mrs. Arl Fritts, of Adrian, and Mrs. Leona Lowery, Neodesha, Kansas. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Amsterdam. Burial was at Adam Howe cemetery.

She was born in Etowah, Ark., and had lived in the Kansas City area since 1957. She retired from Allied Signal in 1985. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Manley, in 1984. Clarence Elmer Marshall, son of Samuel C. and Leatha Marshall, was born December 23, 1882, near Burdette, Mo. He passed away at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 19 days in the Bates County Memorial Hospital at Butler, Mo. on November 11, 1961. Mr. Marshall was united in marriage to Millie Josephine Smith, April 16, 1906, at Adrian, Mo., in the home of Brother Weir. To this union six children were born, Lorene Johnson, Adrian, Mo., Clarence Marshall, Olympia, Washington, Vaunna Mae Goldsmith, Chico, Calif., Nadine Wackerman, Amoret, Mo., and Margie Fahnestock, Anaheim, Calif. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Ebert Gideon, December 27, 1910, also a sister , Mrs. Myrtle Lacy in March of 1940. He was converted and joined the Burdette Baptist church September 11, 1904. At the time of his death he was a member and chairman of deacons of the Amsterdam Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of the home, fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Daisy Bagby and Mrs. Flora Bolling of Adrian, Mo. He also leaves numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, November 14, in the Amsterdam Baptist Church. Interment was in the Burdette cemetery.

Mrs. Leatha A. Marshall died suddenly at her home, ten miles northwest of Adrian Saturday night, April 7th, 1923; aged 70 years, 2 mos. And 13 days. Leatha Tuttle was born in Jefferson City, Mo., January 25th, 1853. Her parents moved from Cole county to Bates county when she was a small child, and she was reared near Everett. She was united in marriage with Samuel G.C. Marshall on October 30th, 1874, and resided continuously since marriage on the farm where she died. To this union seven children were born, three of whom died in infancy. Four survive, viz: Mrs. Daisy Bagby, Elmer Marshall, Mrs. Myrtle Lacy and Mrs. Flora Bolling, all reside near the old homestead. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, three sisters and one brother. In early life she was converted and united with the Baptist church and remained a faithful Christian until her death. Mrs. Marshall was an excellent lady, a good neighbor, hospitable in her home, a kind wife and a loving mother. She will be missed in the community where she spent her useful life. Funeral services for Mrs. Marshall were held Monday afternoon, at the Burdett Baptist church. Burial was made in the Burdette cemetery. The children have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement.

Mrs. Millie Josephine Marshall departed this life on December 9, 1964 at the Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Missouri at the age of 80 years. She was born on October 23, 1884 to Susie (Perrine) Smith and Gideon C. Smith in the farm community of Taberville, Missouri near Appleton City. Millie Josephine Smith and Clarence Elmer Marshall were united in Holy Matrimony on April 16, 1906 in Adrian, Missouri. Theirs was a companionship of 55 years, set aside only by the death of Mr. Marshall in November of 1961. To this union was born four daughters and two sons, one of whom died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall and their family lived in the Burdette community for about 20 years; in and around Adrian, Missouri for a number of years; and after a brief residence in California, they moved to their home near Amsterdam, Missouri in 1947. Mrs. Marshall is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Lorene Johnson of Adrian; Mrs. Vaunna Mae Goldsmith of Chico, Calif.; Mrs. Nadine Wackerman of Amoret; and Mrs. Margie Fahnestock of Anaheim, Calif.; one son, Mr. Clarence Marshall of Olympia, Washington; grandchildren, great grandchildren; other family members and a host of friends. She found Jesus Christ as her Savior as a young girl and was subsequently baptized into the fellowship of the Burdette Baptist Church. She was received into the fellowship of the Amsterdam Baptist Church in 1947. Funeral services were held from the Amsterdam Baptist Church Sunday afternoon. Interment was in the Burdette cemetery.

Samuel C. Marshall, a prominent citizen of East Boone township, died suddenly at his home Saturday morning, June 15th, 1907, aged 56 years, 4 months and 5 days. Mr. Marshall had been in his usual health and plowed corn Friday afternoon until within an hour of the usual time of quitting, when he went to the house feeling ill, he died at 4 o'clock the next morning. We have not been notified what the Dr. considered the cause of his death. Samuel C. Marshall was born in Madison county, Kentucky, February 10th, 1951, and moved with his parents to this county in 1866, since which time he had resided here. At the age of 21 years he was converted and united with the Baptist Church, and was recognized by all who knew him as an honorable Christian gentleman. On October 31st, 1875 he was united in marriage with Miss Leetha Tuttle, who with four children survives him. In the death of Sam Marshall the community lost a good man. He was recognized by all as a man whose desire it was to live an honorable life. The Burdett Baptist Church lost one of its best workers and most potent factors for good. Amid the changing vicissitudes of this life he remained a strong exponent of his convictions. Funeral services were held from the Burdett church Sunday afternoon, June 16th, and the remains were buried in the Burdette cemetery. In this sudden bereavement the wife and children have the deep sympathy of their many friends, and the Journal joins in extending condolence.

MARSHALL, William R.

William R. Marshall, one of our most valued friends who died on the 8th of Dec., 1885, was born in Nelson county, Ky., Feb., 17th 1825. He immigrated to this county in 1857 and settled on a farm in Boone township; where he has ever since lived, with the exception of a short time during the war. When he returned only to find his land alone, as his dwelling and other buildings were destroyed. He went to work again with a will and soon had his farm in shape, and when he was called away left a good and comfortable home to be enjoyed by his family. He had the consolation of being surrounded by his family and many warm friends in his last moments on this earth, and of having it said of him that he was a kind neighbor a loving husband and a generous father.

Lyle Clayton Marti, 62 of Butler, Missouri, formerly of Windsor, Mo., died Tuesday evening, January 29, 2008 at the St. Joseph Medical Center, Overland Park, Kansas. He was born December 24, 1945, on the family farm in Johnson County, Missouri, the son of Virgle Roy Marti and Cora Audrey (Miller) Marti, the youngest of three boys. He was a Christmas Eve baby and a special needs child who was greatly loved by his parents and family. Lyles caregivers at Heartland of Willow Lane in Butler, Mo., where he had resided since April 7, 1983, recognized and appreciated his happy disposition and easy-to-please nature. He and his brother Marion enjoyed each others company. Survivors include his older brother, Marion Miller Marti, Butler, Mo., and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Alvin Lowell Marti on June 15, 1983. Graveside services will be Friday, February 1, at Laurel Oak Cemetery, Windsor, Mo.

Graveside services for Mildred B. Martin, age 92 of Willow Springs, Missouri formerly of Butler, Missouri will be Saturday, August 1 at the Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Mildred B. Martin, age 92, a long-time resident of Butler, Missouri, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2009 at Willow Care Nursing Home in Willow Springs, Missouri. She was born July 8, 1917 in Cameron, Missouri, the daughter of Pearl Robbins Huey and Henry Huey. Mildred had three brothers and one sister, Glen, Alvin, Robbins "BOB" and Delia Packham who preceded her in death. She moved to Butler in her youth. On October 13, 1935 she was united in marriage to Kermit Wesley Martin. They had one son, Jay Dee Martin. Mildred and Kermit enjoyed a very loving marriage for 58 years together until his death April 9, 1994. Mildred was a homemaker and loving wife and mother and she was also a care-giver to her parents and Kermit's parents. They made their home at Butler Recreation Lake for over 50 years before moving to Brookside Manor shortly before Kermit's death. Their family enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling. Summers were spent with most weekends occupied with a fishing rod in their hand. Mildred and Kermit doted on their grandchildren making many long visits to their out-of-state home. She moved to Willow West apartments in Willow Springs, Missouri to be closer to her son in her later years but always considered Butler as home. Mildred is survived by her son Jay Dee Martin and partner Leigh Adams and her daughter Emily Phillips of Tecumseh, Missouri; two grandchildren, Jennifer Hochstetler and husband Phillip and Jessica Martin and fiance Ashlee Fraley of Midlothian, Virginia; and one great-granddaughter Ayden Hochstetler of Midlothian, Virginia.

Nellie Lucille Martin, age 84, a former resident of Fort Scott, Kan., and more recently of Nevada, Mo., died Monday, Aug. 7, 2006, at the Nevada Regional Medical Center. She was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Bourbon County, Kan., the daughter of Fred Leroy Cowan and Jennie Daering Cowan. She married Joe K. Martin on Nov. 13, 1972, in Girard, Kan. He preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 2005. Nellie worked for Key Industries in Fort Scott and the Nellie Don Dress Company in Nevada. She was of the Baptist faith. Nellie was a former member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Lawrence, and husband, Jim, of Nevada; two grandchildren, Bryan Lawrence, Nevada, and Bridget Kavanagh, Carterville, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Shannon Lawrence, Deerfield, Mo., and Melissa Kavanagh, Carterville; and a great-great-granddaughter, Emilie Lawrence, Deerfield. Graveside services Friday, Aug. 11, at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Scott.

Bill Maxwell, 68, Butler, MO died Dec. 19, 2008 at the Harlingen Medical Center in Harlingen, TX with cause of death unknown pending autopsy results. Bill was born December 30, 1939 to Alvis Willard and Marguritte Hard Maxwell in Kansas City, Missouri. Bill grew up in Manning, South Carolina and Lee's Summit, Missouri, graduating from Lee's Summit High School. Upon graduation, he entered the United States Navy and served four years aboard the U.S.S. English. After the service he worked briefly driving a truck, Western Electric and at Bendix Corporation before settling down with Kansas City Power and Light where he worked for almost 36 years, retiring in 2001. Bill was a member of the San Benito, Texas Elks, V.F.W. Masons and Ararat Shrine. He was proud of his southern heritage, service in the United States Navy and work at KCP&L. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Shirley. They attended a yearly reunion of his shipmates, traveled many times to Daytona Beach, Las Vegas and traveled all of the lower 48 states, wintering in South Texas. Most trips were by Highway and Bill always commented, "You can't see anything from an airplane!" Bill's wishes were to be cremated and a portion of his remains scattered in the Gulf of Mexico where he enjoyed fishing.

Old Settler Passes Away. John Mayes, one of the pioneer settlers of southern Bates county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lee Littlefield, near Reavley, at 11:30 o'clock last night, of an abscess on his face, aged 63 years. Deceased was the father of four children, all of whom survive him. He came to this country in the early days, locating on a farm near Arthur. Since then he has resided in different parts of Bates and Vernon counties. The funeral will take place tomorrow. Burial in Green Lawn Cemetery.

Brenda worked for 27 years at Fram Automotive in Nevada. Ray Albert McClanahan, 61, the son of Clarence and Gladys Belisle McClanahan, was born January 18, 1926, in Roscoe and died at his home in Gilroy, California July 1, 1987. After his father's death, he made his home with his mother to be with and help her. Ray worked at Colsons Gas Station in Schell City for 13 years prior to moving to California in 1956. He was a partner in the Peterson Tire Shop at Gilroy, California, retiring February of this year. Ray was baptized at an early age and was a member and past deacon of the Schell City Christian Church. He was a member of Schell City Lodge 448, A.F. & A.M., Schell City Chapter 253, OES, Schell City, and Ama Deum Shrine 16, Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. Ray was a jolly person, a lover of country and gospel music, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. He was preceded in death by a younger sister, Madalene June McClanahan. Survivors are his mother, Gladys Meyer, Schell City; four brothers, Clinton C. McClanahan, san Jose, Calif., Davie Lee McClanahan, Hobbs, N.M., Clarence McClanahan Jr., Salinas, Calif., and Gary McClanahan, Liberty, Mo.; six sisters, Zena Mae Mills, Salinas, Calif., Irene Smith, Schell City, Noma June Ralph, Salinas, Calif., Nova Lackey, El Dorado Springs, Viola Balthrope, El Dorado Springs, and Sharon Goodman, Schell City; and other relatives and friends. Services were held Tuesday, July 7, at the Schell City Christian Church. Burial was in Green Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Lewis and Son Funeral Home.

Eva Mae McDaniel, age 72, of Walker, Mo., passed away Aug. 20, 2006, at the Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada, Mo., where she had recently been admitted after suffering several years with chronic health problems. She was born Jan. 28, 1934, in Denver, Colo., the daughter of Leo O. and Lucy E. (Cruse) Gayman and spent her early childhood years in Denver and at various locations in the Rocky Mountains near Conifer and Pine, Colo. In 1941, Eva, along with her family moved to a farm near Schell City where she attended Flat Rock and Schell City schools. At age 19, Eva was united in marriage to Carl "Butch" Russell and to there union one son, Kelly G. Russell was born. Eva worked as a seamstress at Key's and Nelly Don's until declining health forced her retirement. She was also a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers of America. Throughout her lifetime Eva loved her family and her church, but most of all she loved children -- all children. She helped rear two nephews, Rob and Matt who were so dear to her heart. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and nieces and nephews and could always be found helping to care for them. Eva also had a tremendous love of reading, enjoyed crocheting, and made many quilts for family members through the years. She will be sadly missed by both her immediate family and her much beloved Church family. Eva is survived by her son, Kelly Russell and his wife Patti of Walker, Mo.; four grandchildren, Brent Russell and his wife Alicia; Brandi McCullough and her husband Kevin; Mendi Westhoven and her husband Brent; and K.C. Russell; six great grandchildren, Samuel, Avery, Justyce, Dayne, Rees, and Blayze; four brothers, Dan, Dale, David, and Dean Gayman; four sisters, Barbara Gayman, Maria Applegate, Janet Ijams, and Sherrie Daily; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis Ijams and Duane Gayman; one infant sister; and her adopted son, Elmer. Funeral services for Eva Mae McDaniel were held Wednesday, August 23, at the church of Israel in Schell City. Interment was in the Green Lawn Cemetery in Schell City, under the direction of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City.

Evelyn Melissa McDaniel, 81, daughter of William Moses and Amy Moore, was born Aug. 20, 1920, in North Kansas City, MO. She passed away Nov. 19, 2001, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Molly, as she was known to her friends, spent most of her life in the Rockville area. She was a nurse's aide and enjoyed helping and caring for others. Molly and John Earl McDaniel were united in marriage in 1971. She had a great wit and good sense of humor. Mrs. McDaniel was a hard worker and always spoke what was on her mind. Preceding Molly in death were her parents; her husband; three brothers-George, Clarence and Jasper; and two sisters, Hazel Buckley and Betty Brayfield. Survivors include five nephews-David Buckey-Washington, D.C., Ronald Frank Moore-Kansas City and Daryle Brayfield, Ken Brayfield and Dale Brayfield-all of St. Louis; two nieces, Karen Parson and Linda Walker, both of St. Louis' numerous great-nieces and nephews. A special thank you from the family to June, Frieda and Garrett. Services were held at the Hill and Son Funeral Home, Appleton City on Sunday, Nov. 24. Interment was in the Rockville Cemetery, Rockville.

James Hamilton McDonnell, 84, Drexel, died Dec. 22, 2008, at Specialty Hospital of Mid-America, Overland Park, Kan. He was born July 24, 1924, near Archie, the son of James Karl and Mary D. (Vansandt) McDonnell. On July 31, 1954, he married Wynona Marie (Copeland) Peirce in Butler. Mr. McDonnell was a farmer and stockman until he retired in August 2008 because of health reasons. He and Marie were the oldest attending members of Everett Community Church near Archie. Mr. McDonnell was an Army veteran of World War II serving as a paratrooper and airborne medic. He was a lifelong area resident and a 1943 graduate of Archie High School. He enjoyed his family, working with his children in 4-H, playing cards with his friends, riding his mule and 4-wheeler hunting, the outdoors, going to Colorado and traveling. He was a member of Archie Masonic Lodge 633 A.F. & A.M., the VFW and the American Legion in Drexel. Preceding him in death were his parents; a granddaughter, Mindy McDonnell; two sisters, Cecil Spencer and Georgia Bosley; and his first wife, Loleta Tucker. Surviving are his wife, Marie McDonnell, of the home; five sons, Jim McDonnell and wife, Nancy, LaCygne, Kan., Larry Peirce and wife, Wendy, Pleasant Hill, James Peirce, Drexel, Dale Peirce and wife, Barbara, Borger, Texas, Dean McDonnell and wife, Randy, Archie; two daughters, Patricia Barnard and husband, Dennis, Raymore, Merrilee Honaker and husband, Larry, Drexel; a brother, Lloyd Karl McDonnell and wife, Rose Marie, Archie; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Watson on April 18, 1970, in Rich Hill, and to this union two children were born. Frank was owner/operator of Rich Hill Tire for 10 years. He had a great love for the farm and enjoyed raising cattle. Frank also enjoyed flying and spending time with family and friends. Frank served his country in the United States Army. Frank is survived his wife of 37 years, Sara of the home; one son, Jason McGee and Amanda Kutcher, Lee's Summit, Mo.; one daughter, Melissa and L. Shane Clark; and grandson, Nicholas, Raymore, Mo.; two brothers, Loran Steven McGee and wife Debbie, Kansas City, Mo.; Thomas Paul McGee and wife Linda, Blue Springs, Mo.; one sister, Phyllis S. Marjorie McGennis, age 95, of Rich Hill, passed away on Monday, Sept. 17, 2007. Marjorie was born on April 20, 1912, at the family homestead in Prairie Township, Bates County, Mo., to John Volney and Mary Douglas Himi Bradley. One brother, James Newton Bradley was born Aug. 22, 1910. She attended Seelinger School near her home and went to high school at Schell City, Maplewood and graduated from Rich Hill High School in 1930. She stayed on the farm for a short time during the depression; then in the early '30s went to St. Louis to stay with her aunt and uncle, Nobel and Ruby Smith. During that time she attended business school and worked as a secretary for several years. She then returned home and resumed a friendship with an old classmate, Connie (Cornelius) McGennis. After living two months in a small home near Sprague, they moved into the McGennis home to care for Connie's sick mother. She remained there until June of 2004, when she moved to the Willow Lane Nursing Home in Butler. Connie became an auctioneer in 1947. In the '50s and '60s, Marjorie enjoyed traveling the states with him as he conducted livestock sales. In 1946, Marjorie was baptized into the Body of Christ and attended church Sprague Christian Church. In 1962 she moved her membership to First Christian Church in Rich Hill. She taught Sunday school for all ages for 25 years. She felt the years she taught gave her life real meaning. Marjorie enjoyed people and was a member of the Sprague Community Club, Foster Garden Club, Foster Art Club, Harmony Mission Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and her women's group at church. She was appointed to fill her husband's place on the State 4-H Foundation Board after his death in 1967. She kept up an interest in the McGennis Youth Center throughout the years. Besides her husband, Connie, she was preceded in death by her parents; three sister-in-laws, Virginia Bradley, Mary McGennis, and Ruth Bradley and one brother, James Bradley. She is survived by one niece, Mary Frances Bradley, of Booneville, Mo.; three nephews, James Bradley, of Sedona, Ariz., and David Bradley, New Franklin, Mo.; three great nieces, Sara Bradley, Indianapolis, Ind., Jessie Bradley, Washington D.C., and Laura Bradley, Brattleboro, Vt.; three great nephews John Bradley, Phoenix, Ariz., Nathan Bradley, Boulder, Colo., and Matthew Bradley, Columbia, Mo. She had two mottos: "Never stop learning," and "Praise God anyhow." She always tried to see the humorous side of things, believing to laugh is helpful and healthy. She enjoyed writing short essays, letters, and verses. Marjorie was grateful to the J. F. "Boots" Steuck family for over 40 years of friendship and she considered them her family. She also loved her own family of nieces and nephews. Services were held Thursday, Sept. 20, at Rich Hill Christian Church. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, in Butler. (Heuser Funeral Home)

DeAnna Mae McKinley, 101, Nevada, Mo., formerly of Butler, died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at Barone Alzheimer's Care Center in Nevada. She was born September 15, 1904, to Matthew Harmon and Ellie D. Smith Williamson in Hobart, Okla. DeAnna was one of eight children. The family moved to Ohio community in St. Clair County when she was four years old. She attended Potts Grade School and Apple City High School. As a young girl, she joined the Ohio Methodist Church. DeAnna married James Raymond Mckinley on April 22, 1929, in Osceola. They lived in Kansas City for nine years before moving to Pleasant Gat in Bates County. In 1950 they moved to a Farm southeast of Butler until they retired and moved into Butler. They were married for 57 years before Raymond's death on May 20, 1986. She has lived in Nevada since 1997. DeAnna is survived by her son, Don McKinley and his wife, Nan of Coffeyville, Kan.; one sister, Masa Wix, Appleton City; five grandchildren, Greg Ernsbarger and his wife, Rene, Brent Ernsbarger and his wife, Deborah, Sherri Eador and her husband, Paul, Richard McKinley; two step grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and nephews and nieces. One of Rich Hill's best known and highly respected women, passed away at the home Ninth and Olive streets, Wednesday night, January 21, 1948, at 10:30 o'clock. Mrs. McQuitty had been in failing health for several months, but recently seemed to be improving, and was able to be up a part of the time. On Wednesday she seemed to be feeling better than usual and soon after retiring was stricken with a heart attack. Mrs. McQuitty was born October 7, 1876, at Holden, Mo. She was a daughter of Richard M. Dale and Margaret Dale, who were residents of Rich Hill for a number of years, coming here when Mrs. McQuitty was a small child. She was united in marriage to E. B. McQuitty, December 24, 1894, and has lived in Rich Hill most of her married life. She was a woman of pleasing personality, and before her health failed was active in social and church affairs. Surviving are the husband, E. B. McQuitty, of the home; one son, Fremont McQuitty, Kansas City, Mo.; one daughter, Mrs. Melvin Riffe, Kansas City, Mo.; one granddaughter, Miss Patricia Tellaro, Kansas City, Mo.; and one sister, Mrs. Lillie M. Shute, Colorado Springs, Colo. Funeral services were held in the Baptist church Sunday afternoon. Burial was made in Green Lawn cemetery.

Ed R. McQuitty's Death - One of Leading Citizens Passed Away in Kansas City on Wednesday - A Fine Writer - Ed Was One of the Old Timers Around Here and Was Liked By All the People - Ed R. McQuitty, 87 years of age, died in Kansas City Wednesday afternoon at the home of his son Fremont where he had been staying for some time. He suffered a stroke a few days ago and never recovered from this attack. The death of Ed McQuitty takes one of the colorful figures from Rich Hill and one who was much beloved by all our people who knew him. He had lived here during the big boom years of the town and had been associated with all the high spots of the town. He had worked for the railroad for some time, but what he really loved was the newspaper game. And he contributed a great deal to that profession as he had the knack or gift of being a very fine writer. He had seen many things take place here and had the ability to tell about it in a most vivid manner. He also had a great sense of humor and could always see something amusing in most any incident and then could put it down on paper so you could see it too. We would say that he was sort of a connecting link between the old rollicking, rip snorting days of the big coal mines, the open saloons, the Saturday night fights, the happy go lucky attitude of the miners, and the present more quiet and peaceful days of good streets and pretty parks, good churches and schools and the quieter and less exciting days of the present. Ed wrote a cracking good article. People liked to read them as he had the happy faculty of bringing in a big lot of human interest in all his stories. He could take an ordinary incident and make it uproariously funny. We like to read his articles as did everyone in town and in the country around here who all knew Ed. Ed wrote the story of the history of the town for the Mining Review for the 75th Anniversary edition. He did a splendid job of it too. He brought little incidents in that story that brought the events back to the minds of the people who had forgotten them. He did a grand job on the affair. At the 50th anniversary, we ran a special edition and Ed had a good story in that paper that was enjoyed by everyone who read it. He worked like a Trojan on the publicity for the Shelter House and it was through his articles coupled with the work of the ladies of the Civic club did that the Shelter house (sic) was built and the great popularity of the house with the people of this entire section of the country is one of the more progressive moves that this town has done in many years. He loved baseball and was very active in getting our present fine baseball park built. He worked out there for weeks getting things in running order. He worked a great deal in helping put over our very fine Public Library. In fact you could count on Ed doing anything in the way of publicity to help any movement for the betterment of the town. He loved Rich Hill and was always glad to do what he could to better the town. Rich Hill has lost a valuable citizen in the death of Ed McQuitty. Whether it was in the roaring days of the coal mines and the saloons, or in the quieter days of today, Ed was always in there pitching for his town of Rich Hill. We know of no one who can take his place. -- He Was a Printer and Writer in Rich Hill Years Ago - Edward Boone McQuitty, 86, Rich Hill, Mo., died yesterday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Vena Louise Riffe, 4100 East Fifty-first street terrace, with whom he had been staying since last June. Mr. McQuitty was born in Mound City, Ks., and had lived in Rich Hill since he was 8 years old. When he was a young man he had been employed by the Rich Hill Daily Review as a typesetter and writer. Nearly 60 years later, in 1955, when Rich Hill celebrated its 75th anniversary as a city, he wrote again for the Review, giving a first-hand account of the town's history in a special edition. For several years he was city clerk of Rich Hill. In 1925, he opened an all-night gasoline station and restaurant on U. S. 71 at the edge of Rich Hill and operated it about 20 years. Mr. McQuitty was a member of the Rich Hill Baptist church, Woodmen of the World, and Modern Woodmen. Also surviving are a son, E. F. McQuitty, 410 West Eighty-seventh terrace, and a grandchild. Services will be Sunday at Rich Hill. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery, Rich Hill.

Brakeman Killed. 'Feely' McQuity Meets Sudden Death at His Post of Duty. Knocked into the River. The Sad and Untimely Death of a Rich Hill Brakeman this Morning at 11 o'clock-The Remains brought to Rich Hill at 1 o'clock. This morning 'Feeley' McQuitty passed north on the local, due here at 7:30 o'clock, but which was about 8 hours behind time, and was seen at the depot by a number of his friends and former companions for the last time alive. The particulars of the sad death of this young man are about as follows. When nearing the intersection of the Emporia road, about five miles this side of Butler, the instructions were given Mr. McQuitty to set the brakes, as some switching was to be done. The conductor was on top of the train, and when the instructions were being given Mr. McQuitty was on the ladder in the act of ascending, and leaning out was watching the conductor, Mr. Garnett, unawares of approaching the Miami bridge. While in this position one of the abutments of the bridge struck the unfortunate brakeman on the back of the head, hurling him 15 feet into the waters below. The signal was given and the train stopped as soon as possible, but the unfortunate man was a corpse before he could be reached. A great hole, the size of an ordinary ink stand, was found to have been made in the left back part of the head, which evidently caused instant death. An inquest was held at Butler, and a verdict returned in accordance with the above facts. The parents of Mr. McQuitty have been residents of Rich Hill the past 9 years, and the sudden death of their son is indeed a severe shock to them. The deceased has made Rich Hill his home much of the time, and was well known and liked by all. Besides his parents, he leaves a young wife and six brothers to mourn his sudden demise. The wife of the deceased was not apprised of the sad fate of her husband at our hour of writing, as she was visiting at the mines, and could not be reached. Mr. McQuitty had only been married about a year, and the young wife, as well as all other members of the household, have the profound sympathy of the Review in this dark hour of their sorrow. The funeral services will be conducted at the family residence in the East End tomorrow evening, to which all friends of the deceased and of the family are invited. -- Roadmaster Meyers in Town. Roadmaster Meyers was in the city yesterday, and went out to the Miami bridge, where Mr. F. U. McQuitty was killed on Thursday of last week. While there Mr. Meyers took occasion to measure the distance from the timber where Mr. McQuitty met his fate to where he landed in the water below, and found the same to be 90 feet. "It is a very great distance for a human body to be knocked by the force of a blow, and the imprints on the abutments where his head struck would indicate that they had been struck with a huge piece of iron of some kind. Of about fifteen brakemen who have engaged in that avocation from Rich Hill, Mr. McQuitty is the third to have met death while on duty.

McQUITTY, John Elliott

Died at his home in this city on last Saturday afternoon at four o'clock, J. E. McQuitty, aged fifty years. For several months he has been suffering from the effects of a cancer on his face and some time ago all hopes of his recovery were given up and he patiently waited for death to relieve him of his suffering. John E. McQuitty was born April 9, 1852, in Boone County, Mo. When quite young he came with his parents to Linn county, which has ever since been his home. His parents were well known and highly respected citizens of this county and his father was largely instrumental in building the Baptist church of this city. While not a member of any church, John's inclination was toward the Baptist faith and he was a firm believer in the Lord. "He was united in marriage, October 14, 1879, to Miss Amanda Smith and to them four children were born, Guy, Gertrude, Blanche, and Bryan, who with their widowed mother, are left to mourn the loss of husband and father. Funeral services were held at the late residence on Sunday afternoon and were largely attended, and the body was interred in the city cemetery. The bereaved relative have the sympathy of the community in their great loss.

Harland L. (Mac) McWilliams, born May 18, 1919, in Adrian, Mo., passed away Friday, February 15, 2008, at home surrounded by family. There will be a private family burial and a Celebration of Life service Saturday, February 23, at Red Bridge United Methodist Church located at 117th and Holmes Road. His parents were Lucien and Opal (Elder) McWilliams. Mac is survived by his wife, Pat, of 56 years; son David and his wife Gail McWilliams; daughter Susan and her husband Rich Mordue, and daughter Anita Mordue; grandchildren Darren Taylor, Cristin and her husband Chuck Smith, Ruth Ann McWilliams and Patrick Mordue; great grandchildren, Jena and Madelyn Smith. He is also survived by brother Warren and his wife Bonnie McWilliams and nephew Ed and his wife Nancy McWilliams; great nephew and nieces Matt McWilliams, Kate Henderson and Lindsey McWilliams. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a radio/radar technician. He founded McWilliams Plating with partner CW Riley and retired in 1985. Mac had many interests and hobbies, loved animals, played the guitar, gardened and liked to paint.

Joyce Irene Menego, 81, Walker, the daughter of Vardie "Berk" and Clara Alvina (Young) Henderson, was born Aug. 4, 1927, in Blencoe, IA, and passed from this life on Saturday evening, Dec. 13, 2008, in the Cedar County Memorial Hospital in El Dorado Springs. Joyce, who was raised by her aunt and uncle, Ed and Bessie Henderson, moved to the Schell City area at age three and attended Flat Rock School. After school, she married James Lester Davis and to their union seven children were born. She later married George Joseph Menego and together they had one son. Shirley Joyce lived in the Schell City/Rich Hill area most of her life. She was baptized as a young adult and was of the Baptist faith. Her hobbies included working puzzle books and gin rummy but at the top of her list was her dog, Toby. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, four brothers, two sisters, three grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and one son, James Robert Davis who passed away in 1993. Survivors include her husband, George Menego, of the home in Walker; three sons: Jack Davis, Arkansas, Tommy Menego, and his wife, Michelle, Rich Hill, and Danny Menego, and his wife, Anne, Cassville; five daughters: Margie Shropshire, and her husband, Gary, Schell City, Jeanette Roberts, and her husband, Larry, Schell City, Shirley Foster, Rich Hill, Mary Brashears, Henderson, NV, and her youngest daughter, Edith; 26 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Of special mention is Joyce's cousin and her husband, Willard and Laverne Henderson, whom Joyce remained close to all of her life. Services were Wednesday, Dec. 17, at the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City. Interment was in the Green Lawn Cemetery, Schell City.

Hobert D. Miller, of Urich, Missouri was born March 22, 1935 in Garden City, Missouri the son of George Bernard and Zoma Linnia (Williams) Miller. After fighting a long illness, he departed this life, Monday, September 12, 2005 at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, Clinton, Missouri at the age of 70 years, 5 months and 20 days. On July 22, 1957, Hobert was united in marriage to Mae Evelyn Copeland in Harrisonville, Missouri. Hobert lived around Garden City, Missouri and Urich most of his life except for 5 years he had lived in California, where he worked in a cannery. He was a farmer and dairyman most of his life. Hobert was also employed in the maintenance department at General Motors - Leeds Plant, Kansas City, Missouri until his retirement on July 1, 1990. He was a member of the Cove Creek Christian Church near Urich, Missouri, UAW Local 93, Kansas City, Missouri. Hobert enjoyed hunting and fishing and his greatest pleasure was teaching his grandkids how to hunt and made sure they had good guns, good fishing gear and a good place to hunt and fish. Hobert and his family were known as the Bates County River Rats.He was preceded in death by his parents.He is survived by his wife, Mae Miller of the home; three sons, Rickey Miller and Billy Miller and wife Brenda, all of Urich, Missouri and Jason Miller and finace Crystal, East Lynne, Missouri; one daughter, Debby Miller, Garden City, Missouri; five grandchildren, Brandon, Michael, Richard, Angie and Cody; two great-grandsons, Payton and Brice; one brother, Forrest Miller, Garden City, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.Funeral services were held Friday, September 16, 2005 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri with burial in the Johnstown Cemetery near Montrose, Missouri.

Mrs. Sarah Minton, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Stanley on Dakota street in this city about four o'clock Monday morning, after a long illness. Mrs. Minton was born in Scott county, Illinois, on September 1st 1842, and has for many years lived near Virginia. She was a most lovable lady and has done many kind acts for which she will be remembered by her friends and neighbors. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, conducted from the home of Mrs. Stanley. Burial took place in the Adam Howe cemetery about ten miles northwest of Butler.

Helen Alice Mitchel, daughter of Melvin Adam and Dorothy Helen (Stevens) Hull, was born May 16, 1931 in Clinton, Missouri. She departed this life November 30, 2007 at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton, Missouri at 76 years of age. Helen grew up in Ladue, Missouri moving to Montrose, Missouri at age 18 after her marriage to Ray Allen Mitchel on September 2, 1949. Reverend Wayman conducted the wedding ceremony at the brides home. In 1966 they moved to a farm near Butler, Missouri and then to Appleton City, Missouri in 1986. Helen remained in Appleton City until about two years ago when she moved to her daughter, Virginia's home. Helens children and grandchildren were the delight of her life. After each one graduated from high school or college she crocheted them an afghan. She taught classes for the 4-H club and enjoyed playing piano for church and any other event she was invited to play for. Even later in life Helen shared her love of music while living at Beech Street Apartments where she often played for her friends and neighbors enjoyment. Mrs. Mitchel joined Stones Chapel, later changing her membership to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Montrose. After the family moved she transferred her membership to Pleasant Gap Christian Church and finally to the First Christian Church in Appleton City. She was a faithful member of each church, teaching Sunday school to a variety of ages through the years and serving as regular pianist at Pleasant Gap. Preceding Helen in death were her parents; her husband who passed away in 1995; two sons, Wayne and Jay Dee Mitchel; a brother Melvin Bud Hull; a sister Elizabeth Butler and her husband George; and a grandson Amos Gilmore. Survivors include three children, Helen Virginia Gilmore of Montrose, Missouri, Dean Michel and wife Joyce of Rockville, Missouri, and Barbara Jean Wells and husband James of Blue Springs, Missouri; four brothers, Ralph Hull and wife June of Wichita, Kansas, Chuck Hull and wife Ruby of Clinton, Missouri, Howard Hull and wife Nadine of Azle, Texas and John Hull and wife Eileen of Kansas City, Missouri; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Katina Bartin and husband Tim and their children Hannah, Jesse and John of Columbia, Missouri, Timon Gilmore and wife Mandi and their children Ryleigh and Marleigh of Republic, Missouri, Mary Winters and husband Joe and their son Tre of Columbia, Missouri, Julia Gilmore of Springfield, Missouri, Braun Mitchel and wife Beth of St. Louis, Missouri, Hannah Swift and husband Chris of Independence, Missouri, Barry Mitchel of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Melanie Wells and son Nathan Stark of Blue Springs, Missouri; two sisters-in-law, Lorene Mitchel and Virginia Hull; and a brother-in-law, John Mitchel and wife Alieen. Marty is survived by two daughters, Susan Jenkins of Bolivar, Missouri and Karen LeGrand of Glendale, Arizona; a stepson, Robert Hogue and wife Vickie of Butler, Missouri; a stepdaughter, Dana Michel and husband Robert of Ft. Uncle Andrew Moles died at his home in this city Monday, February 15, 1915; aged 81 years, 10 months and 1 day. Andrew Moles was born in Fenter county, Tennessee, April 14, 1888, and lived in his native state until he was eighteen years old when he moved to Kentucky, thence to Bates county, Missouri, twenty-one years ago, where he resided until his death. Mr. Moles was united in marriage with Miss Rebecca Garner October 14, 1858. To this union seven children were born, six of whom are living, viz; Mrs. Addie Woodson, Fairland, Oklahoma; Mrs. Janie Hay, Seventysix,Ky.; Henry and John Moles, of Shawnee township; Mrs. G. J. Regan, of Adrian; Mrs. Sylvester Catron, of Altona. During the Civil War he served in the Union army. Mr. Moles was converted some thirty years ago and later united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and at the time of his death was a member of the Adrian Methodist Church. Uncle Andy, as he was called by his friends, was a good man. He always manifested a sweet spirit toward all, and was loved by all who knew him. Age with its infirmities did not dim the buoyancy of his genial nature. Few men, young or old, are more agreeable than was Uncle Andy and he will be sadly missed by his many friends. The aged widow and children have the sympathy of their friends in this bereavement. Funeral services for Uncle Andy were held from the Adrian Methodist church Wednesday morning. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

MOLES CHILD DIED SUNDAY - One of Mr. and Mrs. John Moles' children died Sunday at their home, nine miles southeast of Adrian. The little one had been sick for several weeks and its death did not come as a surprise to the family and friends. Funeral services were held on Monday. The parents have the sympathy of their neighbors and many friends in this sorrow which has come to their home.

Clyde Henry Moles, 77, Adrian, Missouri, died at Bates County memorial Hospital August 1, 1990. He was born near Altona, Missouri October 9,1912 to Mary Viola Catron Moles and John Leonard Moles. Clyde was a member of the Altona Baptist Church. He served in the army during World War II. Clyde operated a garage in Adrian several years. He was an avid fisherman, gardener and outdoorsman who enjoyed his family, especially the grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Lois, daughter Peggy Moles and son Robert Moles and wife Debbie, al of Adrian, one sister, Iris Poore and husband Claude; a niece Sharon Carullo; a great nephew, John Carullo, all of Butler, Missouri. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Jackie Enlow and husband Jeffrey, Kori Moles, Jesse Willerton, Adam Moles and Eric Gaylord. Clyde was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Roy, who died in infancy. Funeral services were held Friday, August 3, 1990 at the Atkinson Chapel, Adrian, Missouri. Interment in the Altona Cemetery, Altona, Missouri.

John Moles, 79, retired farmer, died at his home near Altona, Wednesday morning, February 2. Mr. Moles had been a resident of the Adrian community for more than fifty years. John Leonard Moles, son of Andrew and Rebecca Moles, was born March 21, 1870, in Clinton county, Kentucky. At the time of his death he was 79 years, 10 months and 19 days old. At the age of 24, he came to Missouri and was in the Cherokee run. John Moles was united in marriage to Mary Catron December 16, 1900 and to this union three children were born. One child died in infancy. The two surviving children are Clyde Moles of the home and Mrs. Claude (Iris) Poore, Butler. His wife passed away March 2, 1944. He is also survived by a sister Mrs. S. V. Catron, Adrian, a brother Henry Moles, Nampa, Idaho, and three grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Moles were held at Altona Baptist church Friday, February 4. Burial was at Altona.

Mrs. Henry Moles died at the family home in Elkhart township, Sunday, April 3, 1932, after a brief illness; age 55 years, 5 months and 8 days. Funeral services for Mrs. Moles were held Tuesday afternoon from the Altona Baptist church. Interment was made in the Altona cemetery by Creath & Six, funeral directors. Loetta Catron, daughter of James A. and Elizabeth Catron, was born in Clinton county, Ky., October 25,1875, and died at her home on a farm near Amsterdam, Mo., April 3, 1932. In 1892 she was united in marriage to Henry Moles at Cartwright. In 1898 she came with her husband to Missouri, setting on a farm near Altona, where she resided until about one year ago, when she moved to a farm near Amsterdam, Mo., where she resided until the time of her death. Upon coming to Missouri her church membership was transferred to the Baptist Church at Fairview. She has been a member successively of the Fairview, Salem and Altona Baptist Churches. Her savior and her church have occupied a large place in her thought and affections. She has striven consistently through the years to give herself completely to Christ, and has done so to the fullest measure of her understanding of what such a surrender means. She has been in a condition of semi-invalidism during most of her life, but her condition for the past two or three years seemed considerably improved until about four weeks ago, when her health became much worse and all that could be done was unavailing in prolonging her life. Having no children of her own, Etta B. Catron, whose mother died in the child's infancy, a daughter of her brother, T. A. Catron, and reared her as her own daughter. Between them the feelings and affections of mother and daughter have always prevailed in as real a sense as if they had actually been mother and daughter. She is survived by her husband, Henry Moles, of Amsterdam, Mo., her aged father, James A. Catron of Cartwright, Ky., a foster daughter, Mrs. I. J. Brame, of Indianola, Iowa; four brothers, J. W. Catron of Altona, Mo.; T. A. Catron of Cartwright, Ky.; S. V. Catron of Montrose, Mo.; one sister, Mrs. J.L. Moles of Altona, who has been her constant companion and more than a sister throughout the years. Jewell Brame, of Indianola, Iowa, has always been tenderly regarded by her as granddaughter. Besides these she is survived by a number of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. We who have known and loved her have the fullest measure of assurance that she has now found rest and peace and freedom from pain and what she has striven for her she has now obtained.

Mrs. John Moles died at the Butler Memorial hospital Thursday, March 2, 1944. Mary Viola, daughter of James A. and Elizabeth Catron, was born at Cartwright, Kentucky, September 28, 1879, the youngest of a family of 14. She grew to womanhood in Kentucky and moved to Missouri when 20 years of age. On December 16, 1900, she was united in marriage to John L. Moles at Fairview Baptist church. To this union three children were born, the oldest, Roy, dying in infancy; Clyde Moles of the home, and Mrs. Iris Poore of Butler. At an early age she was converted and was a member of the Altona Baptist church at the time of her death. After a lingering illness she passed away at the Butler Memorial hospital, March 2, 1944, at the age of 64 years, 5 months and 3 days. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, John; two children, Iris and Clyde; two grandchildren, Carrol Moles and Sharon Poore; three brothers, Marion Catron of Butler, Vester Catron of Adrian, and tom Catron of Cartwright, Kentucky; and a half sister, Elvira Latham, of Cartwright, Kentucky; also numerous other relatives and friends. GRANDMA MOLES DEAD - Died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. J. Regan Tuesday December 9, 1919, age 80 years, 2 months. Rebecca Ellen Garner was born in Kentucky, October 1839. She was united in marriage with Andrew Moles sixty years ago. To this union seven children were born, one died in infancy, 6 are living. They are Alice Woodson, Fairland, Ok., Jennie Hay, Seventy-Six, Ky.; Etta Regan and Malitha Catron, Adrian, John and Henry Moles of Shawnee township. Mr. Moles died in 1915. In early life Mrs. Moles was converted and united with the Baptist church of which organization she remained a faithful Christian member until her death. Mrs. Moles was an excellent Christian lady, a loving mother and obliging neighbor. Funeral will be held this (Thurs.) morning from the Adrian Baptist Church. Burial will be made in Altona cemetery.

Charles H. Moore died Monday, July 10, 1944, at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 14 days. Charles Henry Moore was born in Pettis county, Missouri, near Lamont, August 23, 1856, the son of William and Jane Moore. When a young man he moved to Bates county, locating on a farm in Shawnee township. For 63 years he was a resident of Bates county with the exception of two years spent in El Dorado Springs, Missouri. Mr. Moore engaged in farming he bought stock for market throughout Bates county and while in this business he acquired a wide acquaintance. He was highly respected for his honor and integrity in business dealings. Charley Moore was in his prime a business man, when one's word was a good as his bond. He lived that kind of life to the end. Until a few years ago he, with his two sons, operated the City Meat Market in Adrian. Mr. Moore was united in marriage to Annie O. Nuckols, October 11, 1882. To this union three children were born: Ernest H. Moore, who preceded him in death February 5, 1940; James W. Moore of Adrian, and Mrs. Raymond Gepford of Butler. Percy Moore of Colorado Springs and Mrs. H. G. Cummings of Butler were reared in the Charles Moore home after the death of their father, Lee Moore. At that time they were small children. Mr. Moore's wife preceded him in death November 12, 1912. Also surviving is one brother, John M. Moore of Butler. There are 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Moore was a member of the Mt. Olivet Methodist church. Funeral services for Mr. Moore were held from Culver's chapel in Butler Wednesday afternoon, July 12, 1944. Burial was made in the Altona cemetery.

J. T. Moore, 79, Stockton, formerly of Arcola, Sheldon and Golden City, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, in Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. He was born June 11, 1929, in Stockton, to Russell J. and Minnie L. (Folger) Moore. On Nov. 15, 1952, he was united in marriage to his childhood friend, Mary Ellen Anderson for 56 years. J. T. Lived in Belton as a child, where he was saved. Upon graduating the eighth grade, he began working as a farmer and carpenter to help support his family. When he turned 18, J. T. joined the U.S. Army and served from 1948 to 1952 and was honorably discharged after serving in Germany in the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the Bronze Service Star and the Berlin Airlift Device. After getting out of the service and marrying Mary Ellen, they moved to Raymore. J. T. continued carpentry and farming as they lived in Raymore, Golden City, Walker and Stockton. He retired in Arcola, where they resided for 24 years. He attended the Assembly of God Church in Stockton. J. T. was preceded in death by his father, mother, two brothers, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ellen, of the home; three sons: Danny Moore, and wife, Patsy, Rogers, AR, Robert Moore, and wife, Connie, Jerico Springs, and David Moore, and wife, Betty, Jerico Springs; one daughter, Sharon (Belcher) Ray, Lamar; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Calhoon, Independence, and Clara Laughlin, Pineville, other relatives and many friends. Services were held Tuesday, Nov. 25, in the Assembly of God Church, Stockton. Interment was in the Maple Grove Cemetery under the direction of the Sheldon Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs.

James "Jim" Larry Moore, 68, Adrian, Mo., died Thursday, April 20, 2006 at St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City, Mo. Services were April 24 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler, Mo. Burial, Altona Cemetery, Altona, Mo. Mr. Moore was born Dec. 27, 1937 in Kansas City, Mo., to Donald Lee and Clara Belle Cates Moore. One of seven children, he grew up in Kansas City where he attended school. On Sept. 21, 1956 he married Sandra Nash at the Wornall Road Baptist Church in Kansas City and to this union two children were born. In 1959 he moved to Waterloo, Iowa where he worked for John Deere. He moved back to Kansas City in 1961 and started working for Wells-Fargo Car Service as a manager, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Altona Baptist Church. As a young man, Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and racing stock cars. In his later years, he liked watching western movies, making porcelain dolls, listening to blue grass music and even played bass fiddle in a band. An avid collector, he compiled a superb collection of cobalt blue glass and die cast cars. Although Jim didn't have a formal education, he had a mindset to accomplish anything, always did the job right and was never without work. Jim's grandchildren were precious to him and he enjoyed spending time with them. James Larry Moore is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sandra Moore, Adrian, Mo.; a son, Devin Moore and wife Deana; and a daughter, Kimberlee Schoor and husband Ed, all of Adrian; a brother, Maurice Moore and wife Donna, Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Barbara Gill and husband Roy, Pittsburg, Mo., and Sandra Moszczynski and husband Andy, Kansas City, Mo.; his stepmother, Naomi Moore, Pittsburg, Mo.; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ernest and Donald; and one sister, Waneta Hammond.

Funeral services for William K. Moore, 62, were held at the First Baptist Church, Butler, on Monday afternoon, Oct. 2, 1961. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. William K. Moore, 62, the only child of George and Lilly Kash Moore, was born on a farm in west Henry County, on Aug. 9, 1899. After his father's death when Bill was about one year old, the mother and son lived a while in Colorado, then returned to make their home in Butler, where Mr. Moore attended school. He married Mabel Sutherland April 16, 1927. For many years they made their home on the farm in Henry County where Mr. Moore was born. When a young man, he accepted Christ as his savior and joined the Pleasant Home Baptist Church. A few years later he was ordained a deacon in that church. Twelve years ago Mr. Moore and his wife purchased a home northeast of Butler where he lived until his death Sept. 30, 1961. Soon after moving to Bates County, he moved his church membership to First Baptist Church at Butler, where he served as deacon until his death. He leaves his wife, numerous relatives and a host of friends to mourn his going.

Died July the 1st 1887, Daniel Morrell, Aged about 60 years "Uncle Dan", as every one knew him, has been in very poor health for some time and about ten days ago he was taken down with a very severe attack of flux, which was the cause of his demise. As we were going to press last week, news of the death of Daniel W. Morrill came to us and we opened up the forms to insert a brief notice only with expectations of mentioning more fully. Daniel Webster Morrill was born in the state of Virginia and at his death he had arrived at the age of 59 years, 3 months and 16 days. He is one of the pioneers of North Bates County having come here in the Spring of 1870, at a time when but few houses could be seen on the broad prairies that are now settled up to their fullest extent. He located at Altona and practiced law there for a number of years, and remained there till five years ago when he moved to Adrian with his family. Has been married twice, has four children by his first wife and five by his second. "Uncle Dan" as he is well known through out North Bates, was always his worst foe free hearted, open handed, liberal to the last cent In his possession, he died poor of these worldly goods, but so long as his money would hold out he was never the man to say "No". Although he died in meager circumstances, he has been a liberal donor to the broad fields of charity of this cold world as many who lives here can testify. His health has been failing him for some time but up to the last twenty days previous to his death, he was able to be up in town by the aid of his cane, but after receiving all the attention that a faithful wife and friends could possibly give, he had to yield to the inevitable. He was buried at the Altona cemetery the day following his death. Word had been sent to his children but was delayed so that his eldest son, Mr. H. W. Morrill, of central Iowa, and was barely able to get here in a few hours after his interment.

Mrs. Martha Ellen Morris died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. U. G. Blankenship, near Altona, Wednesday, January 8th, 1913. Mrs. Morris was born August 4th, 1849, in Harrison county, West Virginia. She was united in marriage with Mr. A. B. Morris in the year 1863, to this union two children were born, a son who preceded her in death, and her daughter with whom she lived the closing years of her life. She lives to mourn the loss of a dear mother. Funeral services were held at the Christian church of Altona. The body was laid to rest in the Altona cemetery to await the Call of Our Heavenly father. She was a member of the Church of Christ and lived her profession. A faithful Christian until death. Beside a relatives she leaves a host of friends. To think of their loss but her eternal gain. With the picture of such a life we can surely say with the poet, Life's race well run, Life's work well done, Life's crown well won, Now comes rest. Her age at death being 72 years, 5 months and 4 days. Rest in Peace.

She leaves a daughter, Cheryl Cook; three grandchildren: Cory Cook, his wife, Jennifer, and Taylor Jo Cook; two sisters, Donna Harleman, Appleton City, and Wilma Burnett, Kansas City, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial services will be Sunday, Oct. 26, in the Green Lawn Cemetery, under the direction of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home, Schell City.

Melvin K. Mosher, 82, Nevada, MO, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2004 at Nevada Regional Medical Center following a short illness. He was born March 30, 1922 in Schell City, MO, to Henry Grant Mosher and Lillian Echelle Mosher. He married Beatrice Lucille Belcher on March 9, 1968 in Nowata, OK, and she preceded him in death on February 22, 1997. Mr. Mosher grew up in Schell City and attended Schell City School. He served in the U. S. Army during WW II in Europe from 1942-1946. He worked as a mechanic for three GM dealerships in Nevada having worked for Cobb, Hennessey's, and later Guthrie Motors until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Nevada. Survivors include one son, Terry K. Mosher, Nevada, MO; one daughter, Melvonna Schneider, Oklahoma City, OK; one stepson, Albert Spencer, Wichita, KS, 13 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two stepsons, and six brothers, Harold Mosher, Edwin Mosher, James Mosher, Kenneth Mosher, Ralph Mosher, and Roy Mosher. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Calvary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Green Lawn Cemetery, Schell City, MO.

Charles H. Mount, 75 of Drexel, Mo., passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at Golden Years Care Center of Harrisonville. Charles was born December 25, 1932 in Brookfield, Mo., the son of Floyd and Gladys Gertrude (Sheldon) Mount. He attended school in Brookfield and later went to work for the railroad. He served in Germany during the Korean War; upon returning home, he worked for Bendix in Kansas City for 36 years. Charles married Sondra Green on May 15, 1960 in Kansas City; she survives. Charles served as the police judge in Drexel for 10 and one-half years; he also served as president and treasurer of the Drexel Lions club at various times. He was also president of the Welfare Board in Harrisonville at one time. Charles and Sondra were avid square dancers and danced with many area clubs. Charles was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by wife, Sondra, and their children: Cynthia Kay Mager and Charles David Mount, both of Drexel; three granddaughters, Ashley and husband Justin Davis, Mallory Mager, and Shelby Mount. He is also survived by one sister, Doris Jean Bellotti. Services will be Saturday, December 20, 2008 at the Mullinax Chapel, Drexel. Burial with Army honors will follow in the Sharon Cemetery near Drexel.

MRS. E. C. MUDD DEAD - At the family home, one mile south of Burdett, on Monday, February 18, 1901, Mrs. Amanda, wife of Ex-Sheriff E.C. Mudd, passed into that invisible beyond. For several weeks she had been a great sufferer from a complication of diseases, and medical skill could not stay its progress. Amanda Stillwell was born January 1, 1852; on September 26, 1874, she was united in marriage with E.C. Mudd. Of this union five children were born, two of them, a son and daughter survive, three preceded the mother. Mrs. Mudd was a woman of noble Christian character. Her life was filled with deeds of kindness, and words of love and affection. Those who knew her best esteemed her most highly. In her home she was like a gentle sunbeam, ever reflecting a kindly spirit, and a persuasive influence over those with whom she came in contact. For 12 years she had been a faithful member of the Baptist church, and her life corresponded with the profession she made. Funeral services were held from the Baptist church at Burdett on Tuesday, and the remains laid to rest in the cemetery at that place. The husband and surviving children have the sympathy of their friends in this great bereavement.

E.C. MUDD DEAD - E. C. Mudd, 80 years old, died at his home at Merwin, Mo., Monday, April 18, after a long illness. Mr. Mudd was born in Kentucky in 1852, and came to Bates county in 1873, locating at Burdett, then a thriving Inland town, he lived in that community until 1896, when he was elected sheriff of Bates county, which office he filled for two terms, four years. It was during his term of office that "Bunk" McGinnis was hanged for the murder of Fred Borcherding, near Rockville. Mr. Mudd was married in 1874 to Miss Amanda Stillwell, who died during his term of office as sheriff. To this union two children were born: Charles and Mabel, both of whom are living. He was married a second time and the widow survives him. After his term of sheriff expired Mr. Mudd returned to Burdett and engaged in the mercantile business for several years. A number of years ago he moved to Merwin, where he spent the remainder of his life. He is survived by his widow, children, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Burdett Baptist church. Interment was made in the Burdett cemetery.

MUDD, Joseph

A Fatal Mistake - Mr. Joseph Mudd, a prominent citizen of Burdette, on the south line of this county, took a dose of strychnine, by mistake, last Friday, and before assistance could be obtained, beyond the power of help. He had long been identified with Burdette and was a very aged gentleman. -- Joseph Mudd, a well to do farmer living six miles south-west of Everett, met with a terrible death a few days ago. Feeling physically indisposed he concluded to take a dose of quinine. Through mistake he took strychnine, and in 35 minutes was dead. This should be a warning to all those that are in the habit of handling poisonous medicines.

JOSEPH D. MUDD DEAD - Joseph D. Mudd died at his home, one mile northwest of Burdett Wednesday, April 3rd, 1918; aged 75 years, 11 months and 13 days. Mr. Mudd was born in Bullock county, Kentucky, April 21, 1842, and grew to manhood in his native state. In 1867 he was united in marriage with Miss Nancy J. Deacon. To this union thirteen children were born, eight preceded the father to the beyond, five survive. Two daughters and three sons, we have not been able to get the names of the daughters. The sons are John, Honest and Ernest, all of East Boone township. The wife also survives him. One brother, Henry Mudd of Adrian, survives. Mr. Mudd came to Bates county in 1868, locating on the farm where he died. He prospered financially, owning one of the best improved farms in north Bates County. Mr. Mudd was not a member of any Church organization but professed to be a Christian and died in that faith. For many years he had been a member of Crescent Hill Lodge A.F. & A.M., of Adrian, having moved his membership from the Lodge at Everett. He was a good citizen and an accommodating neighbor, kind husband and father. Funeral services for Mr. Mudd were held from the Burdett Baptist church Sunday afternoon. The Masonic Lodge had charge of the services at the grave. Burial was made in the Burdett cemetery. The widow and children have the sympathy of the community in this bereavement.

We were much grieved to hear of the death of Joseph D. Mudd, Jr. which occurred Nov. 29, in Canon City, Colorado. He was born and raised in this vicinity, but the last two years has made his home with a sister in that place. His remains were laid to rest in the Burdett cemetery Dec. 2nd, by local Odd Fellows. His many friends extend heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.

PIONEER MOTHER PASSES - Mrs. Nancy Jane Mudd, for 69 years a resident of East Boone township, died at the homestead where she settled with her husband, Friday evening. Her age was 86 years, 10 months and 26 days. Nancy Jane Deacon was born in Nelson county, Kentucky, February 26, 1850, departing this life January 22, 1937. She was united in marriage to J.D. Mudd, January 8, 1868 in Kentucky. Immediately after their marriage they came to Missouri and located on a farm one mile west of Burdett. This became the Mudd homestead and has remained such for 69 years. Mr. and Mrs. Mudd settled there in the days of pioneering, suffered the hardships of those early pioneers and in that community reared a large family. To these good people were born 13 children, 7 boys and 6 girls. Six children, Rufey, Edgar, Mary Lee, Steven, Sary Margaret and Ruthie, passed away in early life. Frannie Hughes and Joseph Mudd also preceded her in death. The husband passed away April 3, 1918. The surviving children are two daughters, Eliza Ann Ornsby, Archie, Mo. and Sidona V. McDaniel, Long Beach, Calif.; three sons, John J., Ernest O. and Honest A. Mudd all of the home address. 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive, and a host of other relatives. Mrs. Mudd was converted and united with the Salem Baptist Church in Nelson county, Kentucky, when a young girl. She always lived true to her faith and devoted her life to Christian deeds of her family and friends. For more than sixty years Aunt Nancy Mudd was more than a resident of the Burdett neighborhood. She was a character for good to all who came and went in the community. In her earlier years she was rugged in health and was always ready to do her part in the relief of suffering of others. The home of Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Mudd was a gathering place for many a happy group and Mrs. Mudd was always ready and willing to receive them. Surely she has gone to a reward for the part she played in the building of a community. Funeral services for Mrs. Mudd were held from the Burdett Baptist church Sunday afternoon, January 24. Interment was made in the Burdett cemetery by the Creath & Six funeral service.

Died at the home of her parents one mile west of Burdett, October, 19th, 1895, Ruth Valola, the four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Mudd. The little one had been seriously ill for several weeks, but was thought to be convalescing. Funeral services were held on Sunday, and the remains laid to rest in the Crescent Hill cemetery. The parents have the deep sympathy of a large circle of friends in the loss of this earthly jewel.

Deceased was held in high esteem by all who knew her, she was possessed of an amiable disposition, a model wife and friend, and a faithful Christian, a member of the Baptist church at Burdett. Funeral services were held in Burdett, yesterday.

Sarah M. the five year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Mudd, died at the home of the parents, one mile west of Burdett, last Sunday. Just one week before they had followed to the grave the remains of a younger child; and this death following so close in the wake of the other brings added sorrow to the hearts of the bereaved parents. Their many friends join in extending their sympathy in this their deepest gloom.

Stephen Mudd Dead - Stephen Mudd died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George McNeil, Parlinville, Kansas, Sunday morning, June 6th; aged 91 years, 3 months and 22 days. Mr. Mudd was born in Kentucky, where he resided until 1873, when he came to Bates county, Missouri, locating in East Boone township, where he resided until a few years ago. Mr. Mudd had been a member of the Baptist Church for 72 yeas and a member of the Masonic Order for 60 years. He was an excellent Christian gentleman, loved and respected by all who knew him. He is survived by five children, three sons and two daughters, the sons are , E.C. Mudd, of Jefferson City, Missouri, William Mudd, Hemet, California; Arthur Mudd, Drexel, Missouri. The daughters are Mrs. George McNeil, of Parlinville, Kansas, and a daughter in Colorado. The body was brought back to Burdett for burial where the funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, burial was made in the Burdett cemetery.

Earl was born October 16, 1928 to Charles Frederick and Allie (McNutt) Muiller in Butler, MO. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 21, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church, Adrian, MO. Military Honors Under the Auspices Of Golden Valley VFW Post 1894, Clinton, Missouri. Interment was in the Crescent Hill Cemetery.

Donald G., son of Martillis and Elizabeth Murphy, was born September 11, 1881, and died May 14, 1933; aged 51 years, 8 months and 3 days.Shortly after his father's death in 1897, Mr. Murphy went to Joplin where he made his home with his sister, Mrs. Gray. He was one of eleven children; two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. His parents also preceded him in death. Funeral services for Mr. Murphy were held from the Altona Baptist church and interment was in the Altona cemetery. Altona was the childhood home of Mr. Murphy.

Mrs. Laura Murphy Is Taken By Death -- Mrs. Laura Catherine Murphy 74 years old, died Friday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Compton, two miles south and two west of Seminole. The body will be shipped by the Chadwick funeral home to Rich Hill, Mo., today for burial. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Compton, Mrs. J. W. Eads of Butler, Mo., Mrs. J. A. Mulkey of Blue Mound, Kan., and Mrs. Cassie Varney of Butler, and a son, Nick Murphy of Autoway, Kansas.

Nicholas Winfield Murphy was born in Cumberland county, Kentucky, Jan. 9th, 1848, and died of heart failure July 20, 1922, at El Dorado Springs, Missouri, where he had gone for a few days visit. He is survived by a wife, one son, W. R. Murphy, one daughter, Mrs. Mable Jennings, and seven grandchildren, one brother, A. M. Murphy, all of Spruce. One sister, Mrs. Helen Kiersey of Okmulgee, Okla., one brother, P. Q. Murphy of Appleton City. Two daughters have preceded him to the great beyond. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the home and interment made in the Radford cemetery. He was a devoted husband, a self-sacrificing father, a loyal and true friend and neighbor.

Sally Lou Murphy, 98, died Friday, February 16, 1979 at the Countryside Nursing Home in Butler, Missouri. She was born December 31, 1880, the daughter of Charles and Martha Rexroad. On January 10, 1906 she was married to Thomas Adair Murphy. Mr. Murphy died January 2, 1949. Mrs. Murphy is preceded in death by her three little daughters, Amelia Pauline, Oral Lucille and Chloe Icy; also by six sisters and two brothers. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis, Paul, Idaho and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Murphy was a loyal and active member of the First Baptist Church of Adrian and was a teacher in the Sunday School for many years. Services were held February 18, 1979 at the Atkinson-Dickey Chapel in Adrian. Burial was made in the Altona Cemetery near Adrian, Missouri.

Long Time Resident of Bates County Dies Sunday Evening. Thomas A. "Jim" Murphy, who had lived in Bates county for more than sixty years, passed away at the Harrisonville hospital, Sunday evening, January 2. Mr. Murphy was taken toe the hospital on the previous Monday. Thomas Adair Murphy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martilla Murphy, was born September 12, 1873, in Cooper county, Missouri. When he was fifteen years of age, he came to Bates county where he spent the remainder of his life. Until his retirement several years ago, he had been a successful farmer. He was united in marriage to Miss Sallie L. Rexroad, January 10, 1906. To this union, three children were born, all of whom died in infancy. Mr. Murphy was converted and became a member of the Adrian Baptist church in 1915. He has been an active and faithful lay worker in his church since that time. The deceased is survived by his wife, a brother, Harry Murphy, of Adrian, a sister, Mrs. Lois Gray, of Joplin, Missouri, and several nieces and nephews. Four brothers and four sisters have preceded him in death. Funeral services for "Jim" Murphy were held Tuesday afternoon from the Adrian Baptist church. Burial was at Altona cemetery by Creath & Six.

Velma M. Murray, 92, Archie, died Sept. 15, 2008, at Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville. She was born March 25, 1916, at Archie, the daughter of Richard Lawson and Rosa Lee (Mace) Drury. Feb. 21, 1937, she married Alfred Floyd Murray. She was a lifelong resident of Archie. Mrs. Murray had worked at the sewing factory in Garden City and at a luggage factory in Kansas City. She was the Austin Township Tax Collector from 1968 to 1972. She was baptized at the United Brethren Church in Crescent Hill, later joining with Archie Christian Church. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband of 55 years, Alfred, who died Feb. 20, 1992, a son, Arthur Floyd; a son-in-law, Robert Carter; four brothers; and two sisters. Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Carter, Houston, Texas; her daughter-in-law, Carol Murray, Flagstaff, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Cynthia Richards and husband, Van, Houston, Sheri Murray, Linda Murray and Mark Murray, all of California, and four great-grandchildren, Brian and Blake Richards, Kyle Murray, Meghan Murray; and a great-great-granddaughter, Michaela Murray. Services were Sept. 20 at the Atkinson Chapel in Archie. Burial was in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian.
