KILLED BY LIGHTNING -- Ava Jackson, Charlotte Farmer, Lost His Life Wednesday Morning. -- Ava Jackson, a well known Charlotte township farmer, was struck by lightning and instantly killed Wednesday morning during a thunder storm. The accident happened about 10:00 o'clock while Mr. Jackson was plowing in a field a short distance south of his home. The team he was driving was not injured, although the appearance of the ground indicated that they had been frightened and had moved over the ground considerably. Mr. Jackson was about 34 years of age. He leaves a widow and a little daughter about 4 years of age.

Bonnie Mae Jackson, 94, Adrian, MO, died Monday, October 27, 2008 at Adrian Manor, Adrian. Services will be held Wednesday, October 29 at the Atkinson Chapel in Adrian. Burial will be in Scott Cemetery, Amsterdam, MO. Bonnie was born September 15, 1914 in Amsterdam, MO, the daughter of John and Bertha (Kershner) Stephens. She was united in marriage to Wesley Jackson. To this union two sons were born, Marvin and Raymond. Bonnie was a loving and caring mother, wife, grandma and friend to a lot of people. Her door was always open to old, young, family and friends and she never met a stranger. Bonnie was constantly there for others and always made time to lend a helping hand. Along with spending time with family and friends, she loved the outdoors and her flowers. Her main pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. When she was with them, they shared their happiest moments. She will be sadly missed and never forgotten. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wesley, in 1989, one son, Marvin, one grandson, Ricky and two sisters. She is survived by one son, Raymond Jackson and his wife, Fran, Osceola, MO; one sister, Verna Corbin, Amoret, MO; three grandsons, Dale and his wife, Monett, Terry and his wife, Kathy and Tracy Jackson; seven great-grandchildren, Jessica and her husband, Jason, Vanessa and her husband, Joe, Wyatt, Courtney, Chase, Trenton and Molly, all of Bates County; a step-granddaughter, Barbie; a step-grandson, Brad; two step great-granddaughters, Malenda and Valerie, South Carolina, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Carl Fred Jackson was born on Jan. 6, 1909 in Harper, Mo., to Charles and Rosa (Stark) Jackson and died June 25, 1990 at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Baxter, Iowa, at the age of 81 years. He was a farmer in Bates County for most of his life except for a short time of six years, 1937-1943 that he spent in Oregon and Washington. He was united in marriage to Lela Crowley on Dec. 10, 1930, and to this union was born one child, a daughter. He was a member of the Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Adrian, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and five sisters. He leaves his daughter and husband, Theresa and Jimmie Stewart of Newton, Iowa; his grandchildren, Kevin, Jackie, and Jana Stewart of Newton; Diana and Drew Holmes of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and a great-grandson, Nathan Stewart, of Newton; three sisters, Maudie Smith of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; Jody Hockett of Adrian, Mo., Eula Manser of Butler, Mo., and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral was held June 29 at the Atkinson Chapel in Adrian. Burial in Adam Howell Cemetery, Amoret, Mo.

Donna Faye Jackson, 57, Independence, Mo., passed away on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, at Truman Medical Center West in Kansas City following a lengthy illness. She was born April 13, 1949, in El Dorado Springs, Mo., to Elton Ellis Light and Mildred Frances Oyler Light. She and William O. Jackson Jr. were married on Nov. 24, 1982, in Kansas City, Mo., and he survives of the home. Donna was a member of the North Platte Baptist Church in Platte City, Mo. Survivors in addition to her husband William; include three sons, Jerry Lamberd and his wife Jennifer, Piper, Kan., James Lamberd and his wife Marlena, Edwardsville, Kan., and Billy Jackson, of the home; one daughter, Megan Jackson, of the home; four grandchildren, Devon Lamberd, Edwardsville, Brooklynn Lamberd, Piper, Dawson Lamberd, Edwardsville, and Avion Jackson, of the home; two brothers, Elton Gary Light, Kansas City, Mo., and Ellis Kenneth Light, Gladstone, Mo.; two sisters, Connie Lee Collins, Sedalia, Mo., and Barbara Ann Comstock, Kansas City, Mo.; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dortha C. Jackson, 84, died at her home, 406 North Main St., Butler, Mo., Feb. 15, 1991. She was born July 9, 1905 in Red Oak, Iowa to Richard Holm and Mary Binegar. She moved from Iowa to Missouri at the age of 12 where she attended Olive Branch School near Virginia. On April 17, 1923 she married Ernest Edward Jackson. To this union nine children were born. Mrs. Jackson was a housewife and was a cook in Butler and Adrian, Mo., restaurants until 1966 at which time she worked for 17 years as an attendant in the ladies lounge at the Bates County Courthouse, retiring in 1983. She leaves four sons; Orville Jackson, and Charles Jackson, Butler, Gilbert Jackson, Adrian, and Ronnie Jackson, Appleton City, Mo.; four daughters, Lucille West, Leavenworth, Kan., Margaret Long, Bella Vista, Ark., Christine Ryan, Pleasant Hill, Calif.; and Eileen Smith, Concord, Calif.; 24 grandchildren, and 34 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Holm, an infant son, four grandchildren and her husband on Feb. 11, 1989. The funeral was held Feb. 17 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler. Burial was at Adam Howell Cemetery near Virginia, Mo.

Mrs. Elizabeth Jackson, aged 81 years and 27 days, died at her home in Charlotte township Wednesday evening, January 25, at 7:00 o'clock. Mrs. Jackson was born in Kentucky, but had been a resident of Bates County for many years. She is survived by four sons and one daughter. Funeral services were held at the home Saturday morning and burial made in Adam Howe cemetery.

Ernest Edward Jackson was born Aug. 4, 1898 in St. Clair County, Mo., the son of Charles Clayborn Jackson and Rosella A. Stark Jackson. He died Feb. 11, 1989 at the Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Mo., at the age of 90. On April 17, 1923 he was united in marriage to Dortha Christina Holm. Except for a few years as a young man living in the state of Washington he lived his entire life in the Bates County area. Mr. Jackson was a farmer and a truck driver, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Adrian Primitive Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Bernie Jackson and one sister, Laura Rabourn. He leaves his wife of the home; four sons, Orville Jackson and Charles Jackson, both of Butler, Gilbert Jackson of Adrian and Ronnie Jackson of Appleton City. Mo.; four daughters, Lucille H. West of Leavenworth, Kan., Margaret Fern Long of Bella Vista, Ark.; Christine B. Ryan and Eileen Smith of Concord, Calif.; two brothers, Carl Jackson of Archie, Mo., and Wesley Jackson of Amsterdam, Mo; three sisters, Maudie Smith of Excelsior Springs, Mo., Josephine Hockett of Adrian, Eula Manser of Butler; 25 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held Feb. 14 at the Underwood-Steinbeck-Schowengerdt Chapel in Butler and burial in the Adam Howell Cemetery near Butler.

Gilbert E. Jackson - Gilbert Eugene "Gib" Jackson, age 82 of Adrian, Missouri died Monday, March 5, 2007 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. He was born February 3, 1925 to Ernest Edward and Dortha Holm Jackson in Virginia, Missouri. Gib, one of nine children, grew up and spent most of his life in Bates County, Missouri. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army. Along with raising cattle and farming, Gib started driving a truck for Ours Oil Company in Butler in the late 1940s. In 1954 he hauled cars for Jack Cooper Transport Company and gave 20 years of service, retiring in 1974. After retiring, Gib wanted to keep busy so he opened up his own mechanic shop and turned many wrenches for a lot of Bates County residents. Gib was an easy-going kind of guy that loved a good laugh and was willing to help anybody. He enjoyed deer hunting and coon hunting, rebuilding tractors, running trout lines, working with his coon dogs, watching "Bonanza" on television and looked forward to an occasional cold beer. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and playing with his great-grandchildren. Gib is survived by his daughter, Linda Casey of Butler, Missouri; two brothers, Charlie Jackson and wife Vesta of Butler, Missouri and Ronnie Jackson and wife Margie of Appleton City, Missouri; four sisters, Lucille West and husband Virgil of Leavenworth, Kansas, Christine Ryan of Pleasant Hill, California, Margaret Long and husband Kenneth of Bella Vista, Arkansas and Eileen Smith and husband Everett of Trenton, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Laverne Jackson of Butler, Missouri; three grandchildren, Jamie, Kelly and wife Jessie and Mary Beth; and four great-grandchildren, Samantha Lynn, Tearsten Marie, Tanna Jo and Jonhenry Bruce. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Orville and an infant brother; and one son, Gilbert Bruce. Michael Ray Jackson - Michael Ray Jackson, 41 Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Butler, Mo., died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. Graveside services were Nov. 2 at the Adam Howell Cemetery, Virginia, Mo. Mr. Jackson was born Oct. 27, 1964 in Harrisonville, Mo., to Charles Edward and Vesta Mae Long Jackson. One of five children, he was raised in Butler where he attended high school. As a child, he went to the Butler Presbyterian Church. He loved cooking as was a cook in several restaurants including Glenn's Cafe in Butler and Denney's in Kansas City. Mike enjoyed cooking, spending time in the outdoors and having a good time with his friends. He was an avid animal lover, especially cats. He loved his children deeply. Michael Ray Jackson is survived by his parents, Charles and Vesta Jackson, Butler; a son, Michael Jackson, Butler; a daughter, Nikki Jackson, Butler; three brothers, Douglas Jackson and wife Mary, Big Springs, Texas, Randy Jackson, Butler, and Devin Jackson, Oklahoma City, Okla.; and a sister, Gayla Jackson, Butler. Orville Richard Jackson, 73, Butler, Mo., died Feb. 23, 1997 at his home. The funeral was held Feb. 27, at the Schowengerdt Funeral chapel, Butler. Burial in Adam Howell Cemetery, Virginia, Mo. Mr. Jackson was born Feb. 7, 1924, to Ernest Edward and Dortha C. Holm Jackson in Amsterdam, Mo. The oldest of nine children, he grew up in Amsterdam where he graduated from high school. He moved to Kansas City and worked at A & P and Frito Lay. On Oct. 30, 1950, he married LaVerne McMillin and to this union four children were born. Moving to Adrian, Mo., he owned and operated a restaurant prior to driving for Jack Cooper Transport company. In 1960 he moved to Butler and became owner/operator of the DX station before being employed by Kahn Chevrolet for 23 years. Finally, he opened his own Butler Auto Sales where he worked until his stroke in November of 1991. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Butler. Thomas Jefferson, son of O.J. and Martha Harvey, was born at Appleton, Bates, Missouri, April 30, 1860, and departed this life Sunday morning at his home in Sharon, being 81 years, eight months and five days of age. At an early age he moved with his parents to Iowa, then to Salem, Nebraska, where October 15, 1882, he was united in marriage with Eliza Ann POLLEY and to this union two children were born: Mrs. Nellie Bertlesen of Woodward and Jesse E. Harvey of Severy, Kansas. In 1887 he located in Osborne County, Kansas, coming to Oklahoma in 1901 homesteading at Moscow Flats and enduring the hardships of pioneering days with a cheerful outlook, enjoying the privilege of building for a future. Later he moved to Sharon where he resided at the time of his death. He became a member of the Christian Church when but 15 years of age and has led a devoted Christian life since. He was a charter member of the Christian Church in Mutual; a loyal member of the Farmers' Union and was always vitally interested in the affairs of his community. Surviving are his wife and two children, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two sisters, Mrs. Belle MORRIS of Dawson, NE, and Mrs. Julia MCGEE of Buffalo, and three brothers, J.W. HARVEY, Osborne, KS; Frank of Kearney, NE and Charles Harvey of Lone Wolf. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Christian Church at Mutual. Burial was in the Sharon Cemetery with the Armstrong funeral directors in charge.

John Martin Jeffries, 77, Nevada, passed away on Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at Barone Alzheimer's Care Center, in Nevada, following a lengthy illness. He was born Feb. 27, 1930, in Nevada, to Isaac Francis Jeffries and Elsie Mildred Smith Jeffries. He married Florence Irene Richards on June 25, 1950, in Lucedale, Miss., and she survives of the home. John attended Nevada schools and was recently among several veterans receiving honorary G.E.D.'s from Nevada High School. At the age of 18, John entered the United States Air Force where he served from 1950-1952 during the Korean Conflict. Following his time in the service, he worked as an electrician for the City of Rich Hill, in the electrical power plant. John then worked for Dabmer Electric in Nevada for 45 years until his retirement in 1992. He pastored several small churches in the area during his life including: Deerfield Baptist Church, Sylvandale Baptist Church, Arthur, Mo., Baptist Church, Girard, Kan., Baptist Church, Caplinger Mills Baptist Church and most recently the Milo Baptist Church. Russell Lee "Russ" Jenkins, age 81 of Harrisonville, Missouri died Saturday, April 11, 2009 at the Crown Care Center in Harrisonville. He was born May 25, 1927 to Max Earless and Minnie Lee Poindexter Jenkins in Butler, Missouri. Russ is survived by his wife, Flo Jenkins of Harrisonville, Missouri; a brother, Glen Jenkins and wife Betty of Butler, Missouri; and numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Fay, Floyd, Charles William and Clayton; and two sisters, Evalena Garrison and Julia Pohle.

Prior to his death he resided in Kingston, Oklahoma. He loved to fish at Lake Texoma. Laine was born May 30, 1938 to Van and Bessie Johnson in Puxico, Mo. He was married for 52 years, six months and 19 days to Jearlene (Jerri) Johnson. Surviving are his wife, Jerri Johnson; five children and their spouses: Sandy Hocker and husband Bill of Archie, Mo., Gary Johnson Jr. and wife Diana of Harrisonville, Mo., Larry Johnson and wife Lisa of Madill, Okla., Vickey Marionneaux and husband Joey of Madill, Okla., and Dianna Howard of Drexel. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, one brother, Jerry Johnson and wife Georgie of Conway, Mo., and two sisters, Sherry O'Dell and husband Jim of Conway, and Doris Thatcher and husband Bud of Sedalia, Mo., as well as several nieces and nephews. Services will be Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel.

DAVID JONES DEAD - David Jones died at his home four miles east of Adrian on Monday, February 26th, 1906, aged 75 years and 14 days. David Jones was born in Kentucky and grew to manhood in his native state. He was married in early manhood to Miss Sarah McCombs, who survives him, to this union three children were born, two of whom are living. He had been a faithful member of the Baptist Church for about forty years and died in the faith. He was a good man, loved and respected by all who knew him. Funeral services were held at Altona, Wednesday, and the remains laid to rest in the cemetery at that place.

Larry Dale Jones, the son of Howard Haskel and Esta (Bennett) Jones, was born on Sept. 28, 1950, in Wagoner, Okla., and passed away on Aug. 29, 2006, at his home, at 55 years of age. Larry was a long-time resident of the Vernon County area. He graduated high school in 1969. He was united in marriage to Valerie Mae Salkil on June 13, 1975, in Topeka, Kan. Larry worked as a brick mason the majority of his life and much of his hard work is evident all around the area. He was also a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Nevada. Survivors include his wife, Valerie of the home, Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Jones of Nevada, Matt Jones and Auna of El Dorado Springs, Mo., Melissa Jones and Eric of Fort Myers, Fla., Mr. and Mrs. Larry Dale Jones Jr. of Nevada, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Jones of Bronaugh, Mo.; Daniel, David, Whitney and Jonathan Jones of the home; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two sisters and one brother. Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 1, at Evergreen Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Newton Burial Park, Nevada.

Mrs. Sarah Jones died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jennie Kennedy of Kansas City, November 11th, 1919; aged 80 years, 2 months and 29 days. Sarah McCombs was born in Kentucky August 11, 1838, and was united in marriage with David Jones in 1857. In 1869 they moved to Bates county, where Mr. Jones died twelve years ago. One child, Mrs. Kennedy, survives, an a number of grandchildren, Col. Wm. Haggard one Mound City, Kansas, being one of them. Mrs. Jones joined the Baptist Church early in life and remained a faithful member of same until her death. Besides her daughter she is survived by two brothers, Col.
