OVEREEM, Ronald Andrew | July 12, 1935 Winfield, Cowley Co., KS |
June 20, 2020 Cox South Hosp., Springfield, Greene Co., MO |
Research Note: As a result of a very brief illness and related accident, Ron died on June 20, 2020, at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Orval "Shorty" Overeem and Nona Fay Orr, and his twin brother, Donald Phillip Overeem. He was a 1953 graduate of Winfield High School, where he wrestled, threw the shot and discus, played football, and drew the ladies' eyes. He attended Pittsburg State University, where he was a lineman for the Gorillas (a team to which he was loyal to the end) and ascended to the presidency of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. While at Pittsburg State, he met his three lifelong best friends: George Terry, future brother-in-law Jim Scates-and his future wife, Mary Jane Volker. After graduating in the spring of 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, Ron married Jane at the First Presbyterian Church of Zenith, Kansas, on November 21 of that same year. Settling down in Carthage, Missouri, Ron went to work for the Gas Service Company, an organization from which he would retire at the level of superintendent 34 years later. After two decades of hard work, child- and young adult-rearing, many rounds of bridge, five residential shifts, countless fishing expeditions, and the building of many a strong friendship, Ron was transferred to Monett, Missouri, where he would spend the rest of his life. Besides rounding out his career as a city utilities employee, he was a long-time active Kiwanis member, sold real estate for Century 21, served as Monett City and Parks Commissioner from 2000 to 2004, and energized the Monett/Purdy affiliate of Habitat for Humanity in a panoply of roles. In 2005, like a good servant in the Talents parable, he took risks in the name of understanding, generosity, and kindness, and planned and organized a group trip to New Orleans to assist citizens whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. In 2012, the Missouri State Senate and House passed a resolution in his honor that commended his community engagement in Monett, and the city presented him with its highest honor, the Pride and Progress Award. One of those citizens nominating him wrote, with great accuracy, that "Ron is one of those who makes no excuses. He just does. Most of the time he doesn't have to be asked to do something, because he's already on it." With his extra time, he operated in an unofficial capacity as the Monett Presbyterian Church's Mr. Fix-It and occasional deacon. The last check he wrote was to a fundraiser for a memorial and scholarship. | Buchanan Funeral Home Phyllis Long |
