CURRY, Rachel (BROWN) | Aug. 1, 1820 | May 1899 | Research Note: Note that the paper date is different from the death date on the stone. - Cassville Republican, April 21, 1896 - Obituary: Died, at the home of O. W. Farwell, May 6, Rachel Curry. Mrs. Curry was born June 1820, and raised in Illinois. At the age of eighteen she married to a Mr. Brown and in 1841 came to Barry County and settled Aug. 1, on the bank of White River, which was that time a dense cane brake. They lived there but a few years where Brown died. She then married William Curry. They lived on her farm until the war came up when they moved to Cassville. While there she lost her husband and four other members of the family, in the war, where with her once large but then small family, moved back to the old home, where they lived in peace and pleasure but a few years when the youngest boy died and the two older ones married, leaving her with only one child to comfort her in her old days. Misfortune still followed. He lost his mind and drowned himself. That left her but one child and a step son - B. F. Curry - her son being that time in Montana. In the fall of 1878 he came home and stayed that winter but being discontented, went back in the spring, leaving her in the care of O. W. Farwell who has had the principal care of her since. For the last seven years the old lady had lived alone on the old homestead. In vain, her step son and friends persuaded her to leave the old home and stay with them, but the answer always came back: "If you had come here when this was a cane brake, like I did, you would want to stay the rest of your life." About one month before she died she was persuaded to leave her home and go home with O. W. Farwell. The old lady said there was only one left who was here when she came here, and that is Edward Easley. She was 75 years and 11 months old and was laid to resting the Roach Cemetery. O. W. Inscription: "SON OF ROBERT and KATIE - KILLED IN ACTION ARGONNE FOREST NOV. 10, 1918 - CO D 342 M. G. BAT 89TH DIV."- Research Note: He was a son of Robert and Katie (Frolley) Easley. - Cassville Democrat, December 7, 1918 - The people of the Roach locality were made sad by the news received last night, Dec. 1, by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Easley that their son, Green Easley, was killed in action, Nov. 10. The bereaved family have the sympathy of all. His parents are highly respected people and Green was a son of whom any parents would be proud. He was loved and esteemed by all and it grieves his many friends over Barry county to hear the sad news. Nobly did he give his life for his county. He had been in active service the last few months and we are sure his record is more than good, as he was always ready and willing to do his part. He was always a thoughtful and loving son. Since being in service he did everything he could to make things pleasant for his parents. And above all he became a Christian after landing in France and wrote such helpful and cheery letters to his many friends and loved ones. So while we are grieving over his loss, it is his gain, but while time rolls on, his memory will linger with us through life. - Cassville Republican, Thursday, June 12, 1919 - Concerning Death of Green Easley - The following letters received by Mrs. Robert Easley of the southeastern part of this county, give information concerning the death of their son, Green Easley, while in the line of duty in France on November 10, 1918. - Company "D" 342nd Machine Gun Battalion, A. P. O. No. 761. - American Expeditionary Forces, Germany. - January 19, 1919 - Mrs. Robert Easley, - Eureka Springs, Ark., R. F. D. 2 - My Dear Mrs. Easley: I am just in receipt of your letter of December 9, 1918, asking for details in regard of the death of your son, Green Easley, Co. "D" 342nd Mch. Gun Bn., and I am very glad to send you all the information that there is available at this time. With reference to the death of your son: He was killed November 10, 1918 at Luneville, France, a small town just a few kilometers across the River Meuse from the town of Stenay. Our Battalion was holding a sector in that vicinity during the Meuse Argonne advance. Our company was located on the sector near Luenville and your son Green and four other members of this company had located their gun in an emplacement near the depot platform. They had just placed their gun in position and were preparing to open fire on the Germans when the Germans put over a barrage of high explosives. One of the German shells made a direct hit on the position occupied by your son and the rest of his squad. Your son was instantly killed and another boy was so badly wounded that he died the next day. As the Division and its units kept pushing forward rapidly, the burial of those killed on the field had to be taken care of by the burial parties, and your son undoubtedly was buried close to the vicinity to where he was killed. Of this fact, however, I regret to say that we have no direct information. These burial parties are required to take all the effects of the deceased and turn them over to the Effects Depot, at General Head Quarters, A. E. F., which in turn, forward same to the nearest relative; and I trust that such effects as were taken from the body of your dead son will eventually reach you. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy in your bereavement. Your son was a fine young man, an excellent soldier, and by his conduct in actions set a fine example for the rest of the men in the company. He was universally liked and his death was mourned by us all. He died doing his duty. I am very sorry that I can give you no further details, but trusting that this and the knowledge that your son died a hero's death will in some measure lessen your sorrow. My heartfelt sorrow goes out to the mother who gives up her son in this great cause. - Sincerely yours, James F. Barton, Captain, - 342nd Mch. Gun Bn. Commanding Co. "D" - Pfiazel, Germany. - Feb. 12, 1919 - My Dear Mrs. Easley, - Your letter just received. I have been on special duty and just returned to the company. I wish to express my sympathy to you. Your son was a brave soldier and did his duty like a true American. You have no reason to be anything but very proud of him. He is buried in Luneville, France, where he was killed. His death was instanteous and he did not suffer. He was buried by a little group of the company and the Chaplin of the 356th Infantry. He left us on Nov. 10th. The company all send their heartfelt sympathy to you his mother. - Yours sincerely, H. M. Cotton, - 2nd Lt. Inf. U. S. Mar. 9, 1917 Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: According to his death certificate Stona W. was a son of Otis Warren and Sarah Eveline (Hilton) Farwell. His wife was Mattie Pyatt. Otis was born in IL and Eveline in Barry Co., MO. He died from the effects of pneumonia fever. Otto Farwell gave the information. - Cassville Republican, March 15, 1917 - Stona Farwell, a son of O. W. Farwell, died at his home on White River near Eagle Rock, March 9, 1917, of pneumonia fever. Stona was just starting out in life being 28 years of age. He leaves a wife and little son, a mother, four brothers and three sisters, whose hearts are filled with sorrow. His father having preceded him only one short month ago leaving Stona as one of his administrators. Stona was a kind son and husband thinking and planning for his loved ones until the last giving them very assurance he was going to a better home and planning for their welfare after he was gone. The bereaved ones have our deepest sympathy as this is the third sorrow of this nature they have been called upon to endure in one months time having to part with the father first. Only two weeks ago they had to part with a little niece and granddaughter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Malley Easley and now the older son and brother. O. W. Farwell was born in Illinois, his parents coming to this county when he was a small child and spent most of his life in this vicinity, his life being an open book to all who knew him, always being very conscientious not only believing in being a Christian but living one before his family and trying to teach them higher morals. He had pneumonia fever 8 years ago and never fully recovering but was spared to his family when they needed him so bad, this last few years only waiting for the summons. Although their home is broken up here it is being made firmer in the great beyond. His wife was formerly Eveline Hilton, daughter of John Hilton. Besides his wife and children he is survived by one brother, Wilder Farwell of Cassville and two sisters, Mrs. Drake of Monett and Mrs. Monday of Joplin. | Gina Easley Death Certificate Donna Cooper Photo Darla Marbut |
