Cassville,
Barry Co., MO
SSW: Mary L. - Research Note: Son of Abner Salyer and Nancy Hale. He first married Martha Jane Perry and second Mary Lee Young. - Bayless-Salyer House History: - After the death of John M. Bayless in 1907 in the same year that Oklahoma became a state, the Bayless House was purchased from the Bayless family by Rufus Garland Salyer and wife Mary Lee Young Salyer. Their children were Arthur G. Salyer and daughter Julia May Quinn. Mrs. Quinn was a doctor. The Salyers moved to Cassville from Golden where he was successful merchant, farmer and stockman. Rufus Salyer was born in Kentucky and was living in Salyerville, KY, prior to the Civil War where he served the Confederacy from that state in the famous Morgan Division. He was in some of the hardest campaigns of that great conflict. He was very young while serving as the Drummer boy. He attended many of the Old Soldiers Reunions all around the country, receiving medals from each for his banner. Rufus had been married previously and had children by his first wife. (Martha Jane Perry married Feb. 4, 1869). Their children were: Emma S. (m. James Tucker, Richard's son), David Dudley Salyer, George Clay Salyer and Leony Salyer. Under the will (Rufus'), Mary L. Salyer, the widow, is to have the home property consisting of the brick residence and about 20 acres of land extending from the home west to the J. B. Hessee land and up the C and E Railroad. At her death the property willed to Mrs. Salyer goes to her son, A. G. Salyer. (Arthur G. (probably Garland) Salyer. Arthur G. Salyer, the son resided in the home for many more years, along with two children Ben and Genette. Arthur G. was the owner who built the front portion of the porch on that makes the house complete as it is today. The approximate date is 1928 and may be logged down in a record book somewhere? Arthur G. Salyer and P. E. Horine were in business together in Cassville. A distant cousin Glenn was a doctor living in Cassville. - January 9, 1913, Thursday, Cassville Republican, Barry Co., MO - Viola News: Misses Bee Tucker and Mary Quinn are keeping house for their grandfather, R. Salyer was hit by a car driven by his son, Arthur, while backing their car out of the garage Friday morning. He suffered two fractured ribs in the left side and was bruised about the face, hands and arms. Mr. Salyer was standing in the street talking to Mrs. Mollie Messer and did not notice the car. He generally stood on the steps at the entrance of the garage from where he boarded the car. While the accident is regretted by Mr. Salyer's many friends, all agree that it was a fortunate accident that he was not more seriously injured. The first known of the accident was when Arthur noticed his father lying in front of the car. The bed of the car passed over his body. He secured assistance and forced the door and found him in bed dead, with one arm hanging out over the bed rail touching the floor. A rat had bit him on the wrist that had bled liberally and run on the floor, which was not dry, which indicated that he had probably died sometime that morning. SETZER, George Franklin Mar. 11, 1873 June 22, 1907
Cassville,
Barry Co., MO
Research Note: Son of Milton Y. Setzer and Chloe E. Hilliard. - Cassville Republican, Barry Co., MO, Thursday, May 9, 1895 - Licensed to Wed: George F. Setzer, 22, Cassville and Laura Ireland, 18, Cassville. Laura remarried to Lee C. Hodges and is buried at Oak Hill under Hodges. - June 29, 1907, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - George Franklin Setzer died very early Saturday morning, June 22, 1907, of consumption, age 34 years, 3 months and 10 days, at the residence of his father, M. Y. Setzer near this city, leaving a loving wife, fond parents, sisters and a brother, and other relatives to mourn his death. Rev. Ewing McCracken of Sarcoxie conducted the funeral services at the family residence Saturday at 2 p.m., after which the remains were conveyed to Oak Hill Cemetery at this place and laid to rest. His death has brought the bitter cup of sorrow to the lips of the relatives and friends. It is sad at any time to stand beside the bed of the dying and watch life's ebbing tide drifting the loved one slowly but surely into the great ocean of eternity, but when there comes whispering from parched lips: "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me," it brings a balm to the wondered heart. Thus closed the life of George Setzer. To the heart-broken wife, father, brother and sisters, who sit in sorrow where his footsteps will never again find echo, we extend our sympathy. When they have drained the cup may the peace that passeth all understanding come to them from One who cares for each little sparrow that fallest. - Laura's Obit - Plot Stone Online Newspapers

SHEETS, John M. Dec. 31, 1839
Rochelle, IL
June 8, 1909
Exeter,
Barry Co., MO
Research Note: His wife was Mary E. Mitchell. - June 12, 1909, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - From a complication of diseases that had baffled the medical profession, John M. Sheets died at Exeter, Tuesday morning June 8, 1909, age 61 years, leaving a wife and three children to mourn his death. He was born at Rochelle, Ill., and lived there until 1873, when he moved to Nora Springs, Iowa, and engaged in the hardware business for many years. In about 1905, he moved to and located at Exeter. He had been married three times and had a child by each marriage. Funeral services were held a the family residence Thursday afternoon by Rev. P. St. Clair of the M. E. Church, South, to a large number assembled to pay the last respects to a good man. He had been a member of the M. E. Church for many years. After the funeral services the remains were conveyed to this city and laid to rest in the Oak Hill Cemetery. He was a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent, father; to his relatives, he was tender and kind; to his friends the soul of friendship. As a man, it is that those who knew him best, most love to contemplate him. He believed that the man who scatters flowers in the pathway of his fellow men, who let into the dark places of life, sunshine of human sympathy and human happiness, is flowing the footsteps of his Master. His life was gentle, but like the still waters, it was deep. He was a little slow to make acquaintances, but when you once learned his character, you would appreciate his acquaintance. - February 20, 1909, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - John Sheets of Exeter, who is old and in very feeble health, fell Thursday and it is feared broke one of his hips. Research Note: She was a widow and daughter of Pryor Bradley, mother born TN. No other information. - March 24, 1910, Thursday, Cassville Republican - March the 11th at 5:25 a.m. the death angel visited our home and took our mother, Mrs. Mary Smith, wife of Thomas Smith and mother of Frank S. Moore. She was the daughter of Prier Bradley, was born in East Tennessee in 1845 and came with her parents to Barry county when she was six years old and had lived in Barry County ever since, except a few years in Dade County. She professed her faith in Christ when young and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and lived in that faith until her death. She had been afflicted for about seventeen years and could not attend church as she would have liked to do. She leaves three brothers and one sister and one son to mourn her death. Their loss is her gain. She died of heart trouble and dropsy and bore her affliction with patience and was ready to go. She was living at her son's and all was done that loving hands could do but Jesus said, it is enough, come up higher, where there is no more sickness nor goodbyes. Rev. J. W. Ennes conducted the funeral services at the house and we laid her to rest in the Oak Hill Cemetery to await the resurrection morn. - Thomas Smith is buried at Horner Cemetery. Death Certificate

SSW: Mary Susan - Research Note: Sources other than headstone indicate his first name may have been Jackson rather than James. - January 27, 1910, Thursday, Cassville Republican - The friends of ex-sheriff J. A. Stephens of Joplin will be surprised and shocked to hear of his death which occurred at Monett, late Tuesday night, from the effects of an overdose of morphine. It is thought that his death is a suicide and domestic troubles are thought to be the cause. It is also rumored that only a few weeks ago he made a similar attempt to end his life. As we go to press a coroner's inquest is being held. We do not have full particulars concerning the death. His son, Pharis Stephens, of Exeter was with him when he died, being sent for some time before the end came. He lived several hours after taking the drug. - Later, By phone, we learn that coroner's jury found that J. A. Stephens came to his death from an overdose of morphine and that by his own voluntary act. - March 7, 1903, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Mrs. Jas. Henley visited her parents, J. A. Cassville,
Barry Co., MO
Research Note: His wife was Harriet Cargile. - Feb. 10, 1916, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Ex-Sheriff Victim of Pneumonia - The citizens of Cassville and community were stricken with grief when Saturday morning at an early hour the news was received that John R. Sullivan had passed away at his home just south of this city. He had contracted pneumonia a few days before but as only one lung was involved at the beginning of his illness his family and many friends were hopeful that he would recover. Friday night he grew rapidly worse and passed away at 5:20 o'clock Saturday morning. John Riley Sullivan was born in Ash township in 1854. There he grew to manhood. In 1876 he was married to Miss Harriett Cargile near Washburn and since that time had been a citizen of this county, living near Washburn until December 1900 when he moved Cassville. For a few years in the early seventies he lived in Benton County, Ark. He leaves a wife and five children, three sons, Elsey, Ed and Carl; and two daughters, Miss Tennie at home and Mrs. Dora Loyd of Arkansas. Mr. Sullivan was elected sheriff of Barry County in 1900 and re-elected in 1902, the office at that time being only a two year office. He made an excellent official and won the highest esteem of the citizens of the county by his impartial and faithful discharge of an official duty. He was a man of sterling integrity, quiet and conservative, steadfast in what he believed to be right and loyal to his family and friends. In his passing the county loses one of its good substantial citizens. The funeral services were held at the home one mile southwest of town where his family has lived since expiration of Mr. Sullivan's term of office, January 1905. The service were conducted by Rev. L. R. Lamb, pastor of the Baptist Church of this city and interment made at Oak Hill Cemetery. - Sullivan Plot Stone Headstone
