Research Note: Photo of stone at findagrave.com. Parents not given on the death certificate. Some say his name was Jacobie and census says Jeffrie. - 1860 Census, Flat Creek, Barry, Missouri - Age 30, born VA, living with the Dr. Wallis Deffebaugh family. - 1910 Census, Flat Creek, Barry, Missouri - Age 79, born VA, single, parent's born England. - January 25, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - J. W. Boon, one of Barry County's pioneer citizens who had helped to shape the county's history one half century ago, died at the home of Ad Miller, south of Cassville, Tuesday, Jan 23. He was born in Virginia, June 17, 1830, making him 81 years 7 months, and 6 days old. He came to this county about 1856 and located on what is now the Elmer Shore farm north of Cassville. He lived there for many years and made a success with his farm. He soon became interested in public affairs and in 1862 he was elected to represent this county in the state legislature. He was elected to the legislature again in 1866. Later he served as a county surveyor and made, as he had done in the legislature, an excellent official. Older citizens who knew him during those days state that he made this county one of the best officials it ever had. He lived southeast of Cassville for several years. This farm he sold a few years ago and since this time, having no family or relatives in this part of the county, he has lived with Ad Miller's. Ad has looked after the old man as though he was a near relative, which was a most commendable act on his part. J. W. Boon was a man of the type of the sturdy old Virginian, strictly honest and upright in everything, eccentric in his way, but an excellent citizen. His body was buried Wednesday at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cassville. - Jeffrey W. Boon was appointed postmaster at Cassville, MO on Apr. 7, 1864. Online Newspapers

M. Bower, at the age of 69 years, 4 months and 19 days. She had been an invalid for a number of years and for the past nineteen months she has been helpless and confined to her bed. Her husband, Jacob Bower, departed this life, Nov 14, 1899. Louisa Jane (Talbert) Bower was born June 27, 1846, in Shelby County, Ind. There she grew to womanhood and was married to Jacob Bower. Church and later with the Presbyterian church of the city and died a devoted member of that church. "Aunt Lou", as she was familiarly known, was beloved by all who knew her. She was devoted to home, church and family. With her passing a good mother has gone to her reward. Rev. E. W. Bradley Oct. 4, 1895. To them two daughters were born one of whom Miss Eulaie, aged 19, is living. The family moved back to Illinois a short time after the death of their little daughter. The deep grief caused by her daughter's death undermined her health which ended in a nervous breakdown. She had been a faithful member of the Baptist church for many years and during their residence near this city had made a host of friends who held her in the highest esteem. Online Obit

Arthur Bradley was the informant. He was also married to Dolly Evaline (Summers) Riddle. - Obit: Houston Bradley Answers the Call: Houston Bradley one of the native born sons of Barry County has answered the call of that grim yet silent monster death and has gone to that land where death never enters. Houston Bradley was born NE of Cassville about four miles, in Oct. 1852, near the Antioch Baptist church and had spent all his life as a resident of this county, and passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 1924, at the age of 72, 3 months and 18 days of complication of diseases at his home three and one half miles NE of Cassville. In 1877 he and Miss Minerva Black were united in marriage and to this union three children were born, all of whom survive him. In 1915 Mrs. Bradley died and later he married to Mrs. Mattie Kerr who with his three sons survive. The children are: Charley of West Plains, Arthur and Will Bradley of near Cassville, all of whom were at his bedside when death came. Mr. Bradley was a member of the Methodist Protestant church and lived the holy life as he saw it. He was a man of reticent nature who loved to do right by his fellow man, conscientious in all his dealings. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Cassville, Friday, Feb. 15, conducted by Rev. Francis Goodnight of Purdy and interment made in Oak Hill cemetery. In the passing of Mr. Bradley, Barry county not only loses one of its native sons but the county one of its noble, straightforward men. - July 14, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Local And Personal: Saturday evening as Ira Hemphill, John Martin and others of McDowell, were motoring to this city, with Ira's son driving and when coming down the hill near Leban Barcus residence, the car ran into Houston Bradley's buggy turning it over. One Wheel, the fifth wheel and a basket of eggs were broken. We understand the matter has been adjusted by Ira make the buggy as good as it was and paying for the eggs. The brakes on the car were not working as they should. Death Certificate

July 11, 1915

Barry Co., MO
Research Note: He was a son of Rev. James T. Brattin, born Washington Co., AR, and Minerva Laura Sills, born Princeton, KY. - July 24, 1915, Thursday, Cassville Republican - The people of Cassville and community were deeply grieved at the noon hour Friday when the news was given out that one of the citizens who only a short time before was in the full vigor of young manhood, had passed away. For days while the manly struggle for life was being fought and is physician was constantly at his bedside, his host of friends were ever hopeful each day that the next would bring the change for the better. A number of hemorrhages readily took the strength of youth and he quietly passed into that sleep which knows no waking. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the tabernacle in Cassville, conducted by Rev. C. F. Siler of Anderson and Rev. L. R. Lamb of this city. The large concourse of people present was a strong testimonial of the high esteem in which the family is held. Few larger crowds have ever attended a funeral service in Cassville. Prof. J. E. Thomas and his excellent choir beautifully assisted in the services. The pall bearers were young men of the Baptist Church: Dr. E. L. Blankenship, F. A. Meadow, James Mitchell, Evan Shore, Horace Stacey and Julian Van Hook. Oren Brattin was born March 12, 1895 on the farm which was his home when he died. He had lived in the community all his life. He was graduated from the Cassville High School in the Class of 1914, was united in marriage with Miss Lela Bailey, daughter of Dr. W. T. Bailey, June 1914. He taught one term of school but had recently decided to engage in farming. He professed faith in Christ and united with the Baptist Church at Cassville more than one year ago. Oren was a manly, intelligent and deserving young man. He was the oldest son of Rev. and Mrs. J. T. Brattin of this city. He leaves also a wife, an infant daughter, two sisters and one brother. Interment was made in the family lot at Oak Hill Cemetery. Online Obit

SSW: Minnie - Research Note: J. T. was the Son of John W. Brattin born TN and Matilda Martin, born VA. Mrs. Clara Henderson was the informant on the death certificate. - Cassville, 1936 - J. T. Brattin - Moderator County Ass'n. 34 Times - Baptist Minister Who Died in Freeman Hospital, Joplin December 2 Had Married 480 Couples and Conducted More Than 100 Funerals: Funeral rites for James T. Brattin, one of the best known Baptist ministers in Southwest Missouri, who died December 2, were held Sunday, December 6, at the Community building in Cassville. An immense crowd of people attended the services. Elders Siler, J. A. Curtis, Oscar Higgins and Charles Vanzandt conducted the impressive services. The Barry county Baptist ministers attended the funeral in a body. Masonic honors were given at the grave. Floral offerings were beautiful and profuse. Burial was in the Oak Hill cemetery at Cassville under direction of Blankenships. Pallbearers were Rev. Otis Cox, Cassville; Rev. Ab Edie, Purdy; Rev. E. Linebarger, Cassville; Rev. Loren Lauderdale, Purdy; Rev. Verdayne Dodson, Cassville and Rev. Al Bennett, Purdy. James Tilman Brattin, son of John W. and Matilda Brattin, was born March 12, 1859 near Fayetteville, Ark. When he was about two years old his parents moved to Barry county and settled near the present location of the Cassville grade school where they resided during the Civil war. Here he grew to manhood and with the exception of five years lived in Barry county the rest of his life, all but a few years were spent in Cassville. On April 10, 1883, he was married to Minnie L. Sills, daughter of the late Rev. J. C. Sills, a pioneer Baptist minister of Barry county. To this union six children were born, four of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Brattin, one daughter, Mrs. Calvin Henderson of Cassville, one son Morris W. Brattin of Pontiac, Mich, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was converted December 23, 1885. During the same meeting his wife also was converted and they both united with the Cassville Baptist church and were baptized by Rev. J. C. Sills. Immediately after his conversion he began active Christian work, and in just a few years began preaching. He preached his first sermon at Antioch Baptist church September 1, 1889, and before the end of the year had preached 31 sermons. He was ordained to the ministry in April 1892 by Antioch church. This church he was serving as pastor at the time of his death. In the Barry County Association he has served as pastor of the following churches: New Site, New Hope, Calvary, Corinth, Shell Knob, Golden, Exeter, Purdy, Washburn, Wheaton, Jenkins, Arnhart. In other associations he held pastorate at Verona, Clear Creek, Ebenezer, Mt. Olivet, Kings Point, Round Grove, Mt. Olive, Carterville, Seneca, Racine, Prosperity, and was pastor at Grove, Okla., for two years. In addition to his years of pastoral service, he served Barry County association as missionary for four years. Rev. Brattin was honored by Barry County association in being selected moderator 34 times, the first time being in 1901. The only exceptions were in 1927 and 1928, when he was in Grove, Okla. This position he filled with credit to himself and to the association. His home church, Cassville Baptist church, called him as pastor three times. Few men who have given themselves so unstintedly to the ministry, have enjoyed better health. November 1, 1936 he filled his appointment with the church at Golden where he was pastor. Rev. Brattin had always kept an accurate record of his work, but at the present time these are not available. However, it is known that he married 480 couples, had witnessed thousands of conversions, had baptized thousands of persons, and had conducted more than a thousand funerals. He contracted a severe cold during the recent illness and at the death of his brother, the late L. D. Brattin, who passed away October 24, 1936. Soon after returning from Golden he was stricken with the illness which took him to the hospital. He was recovering from the operation in a fine way when pneumonia seized him, and only a few hours could his weakened body withstand the attack. From the Freeman hospital, he departed this life and its toils, December 2, 1936, to go to his heavenly home and its glories. He leaves a great host of true friends, many of whom he led to Christ and had baptized and comforted in times of sorrow and encouraged with his strong Bible sermons. Of him can it be truly said, "He was mighty in the scripture." - Another Photo - Photo of James - Photo of James, 1936 - Photo of James, son Morris, and granddaughter. Obit

His sister's, Sarah Frances Brown Davidson buried at Rocky Comfort, obit says she was the daughter of Murphy Brown and Rebecca Poindexter. - Cassville Democrat, Dec. 6, 1934 - Well Known Retired Cassville Merchant Succumbs To Pneumonia After Few Days, Illness - All Cassville and Barry County bowed their heads in grief last Saturday morning, when L. G. Brown, old time and beloved citizen of this community, passed away following a short illness and pneumonia. This excellent citizen suffered a paralytic stoke a few months ago from which he never fully recovered. Mr. Brown was one of the county's oldest citizens, being 98 years, seven months, and 18 days old at the time of his passing. This excellent character was born near Raleigh, North Carolina. He moved with his parents to Tennessee when a young man, where he was united in marriage to Miss Keturh Ann Templeton, on November 9, 1858, his splendid wife preceding him in death nine years ago. In the year 1874, he and family moved to Barry County, first locating in Capps Creek township, After residing there a few years, he moved to a farm on Shoal Creek, near the Swindle College. It was after a few years residence in that community, that he moved to Cassville and engaged in the mercantile business with the old well know firm of King, Bayless and Padgett, which was successfully operated for many years. Later on, he and his son, Lee acquired this noted store which they continued to operate for many years, being one of the oldest establishments of it kind in this part of the state. A few years ago, they disposed of the store, this splendid character retiring from business and making his home with his splendid son, Luther Brown and family of near Cassville, his son, Lee and family left for Salinas, California, where he has since been in similar business. Four children were born to the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Brown, who are Luther of Cassville, Lee of California, and Mrs. Shade Wallen of Vinita, Ok., all of whom survive, and son Robert of St. Joe, MO who preceded his father in death a few years ago. In addition to these children, he leaves twelve grand-children, of which are: Roy Brown of Springfield, Preston of Monett, Leonard at home, and two sons of Robert Brown deceased. He also leaves three great-grand-children and one great-great-great grandson, all of whom were present at the funeral. There were five generations of this splendid family at the services. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Cassville, conducted by Rev. E.W. Love of Joplin, who ably pictured this excellent character and eulogized him for the honorable, clean and upright life which he had lived. The church was filled with sorrowing relatives and friends of this good man who came to pay their last love and respect. Interment was made in the Oak Hill cemetery, beside his good wife, under the direction of Koon Funeral Service. A quartet composed of Mr. B. D. Wilks, Mrs. Glen Pearl, Clinton Blythe and J. W. Hisey furnished beautiful music at the services. Many beautiful floral emblems were received from near and distant friends of the deceased and his family. L. G. Brown was man in whom every one had explicit confidence. His word was his bond and his every act was to do right. He was a man who always attended strictly to his own affairs and was truthful sincere, honest and progressive. He had many friends who loved him sincerely. In his closing days, as well as in past years, this kind of character was given every care possible from the hands of those in whose home he lived. The Democrat joins the many friends of the bereaved family in extending sympathy in their sad hour of bereavement. - May 19, 1898, Cassville Republican - L. G. Brown left Friday morning for Nathiel Spring, Ark., to visit his brother, R. A., whom he had not seen since the war. - May 30, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - L. G. Brown of Purdy who is suffering from a nervous breakdown is reported to be improving. - Cassville Republican, January 20, 1916 - Celebrates Eightieth Birthday: L. G. Brown passed the eightieth milestone of the highway of life on Thursday, April 13. Mrs. Brown and son, A. L. gave him a birthday dinner in honor of the occasion. The employees of the Brown Mercantile Co. and Miss Emma Vawter were dinner guests. Mr. Brown says he is eighty years young and judging from his apparent good health and the ways in which he looks after his business, his friends believe that he puts it right. Death Certificate

BROWN, Roy Elery Oct. 22, 1882 Oct. 6, 1972 SSW: Hasel L. - Research Note: He was widowed in the 1910 Census, living with his parents Charles Luther Brown and Nancy Virginia Carlin. Obit for first wife: Cassville Democrat, Apr. 3, 1909 - After continued suffering of the severest nature, Mrs. Lutecia (Henderson) Brown wife of Roy Brown of Purdy, died at her home in that place, Monday 29th, 1909, of tuberculosis of the bone, age 23 years, 2 months and 11 days. She was a daughter of the Rev. F. P. Henderson. She and Mr. Brown were married July 1, 1903, and to them were born two children, Noveta 4 and Jed two years old. Rev. Chas. L. Siler conducted the funeral at the Baptist Church, Tuesday, March 30, 1909, and the church could not accommodate the many assembled to pay the last respect to the dead. She was a devoted Christian lady, and a worker in the Sunday Schools. To her, the struggle and burden bearing of earth are ended and we confidently trust that like one who awakes from a troubled dream, she has awakened to see life's endless morning break and known herself at home with all the vast throng of loved ones, missed from earth, safe about her. Gone from their sight, but because life and love are stronger than earth she is still there. She is still the mother of the dear children, upon whom she devoted with such enlacing? fondness, and the companion still of him, who mourns earth's greatest loss, and may she not by this transition wild over then a stranger force for goodness and truth than before. - He second married Hasel Lough on Mar. 23, 1913 in Purdy, Barry Co., MO.
