SSW: Martha P. - Research Note: Stone reads: "Rev. J. W. Ennes" - "Martha". He was a son of Elisha and Matilda (Terry) Ennis. - Cassville Democrat, May 10, 1919 - ?God touched him with his finger, and he slept,? the poet wrote. So may we say of this good life, that was plucked by the Death Angel, when a beautiful life was closed, a noble example of patience, fidelity to truth and faith were given and not until visions of a heavenly life, in Jesus Christ, had cheered and illumed valley of the shadow. Now that he sleeps, memory takes up the harp of life, and smiting the strings, finds that his virtues melt into Godly music. So it ever is, when a life is nobly and divinely lived. We can add nothing in words to the splendid life that he lived, but only to recommend it, as being worthy of following in his footsteps, that leads to that beautiful land somewhere. He had given his life to the service of God and his reward will be great in the mansions above. J. W. Ennis was born in Washington county, Ark., April 6, 1851 and in 1865, his parents moved to this county, and at the age of 18 years, he was converted and joined the M. P. church and began preaching at the age of 21 years, which he continued thru life. On Oct. 29, 1871, he and Miss Martha Thornhill were married and to this union were born, nine children, seven of whom are living and were with him in his last hours. His wife preceded him to the glory land some four years before. He told his relatives that his work was finished and he would feel better beyond the grave. His children surviving him are; John of Butterfield, Ollie of Monett, Mrs. Albert Reynolds, Parsons Kansas, Mrs. Elsey Smith, Mrs. Jas. Chapman, Mrs. J. W. Sharp and Miss Alice at home near Cassville. He left four brothers Fred, Cato; Miles, Hailey; Dow, Cassville; and Willis, Whitten, Ark., and one sister Mrs. Jane Hall, Mineral Spring. Rev. J. E. Stribbling of near Monett and Rev. Francis Goodnight of Purdy, conducted funeral services at the late home Wednesday afternoon, where a large number of relatives and sympathizing friends had assembled to pay their last tribute of love and respect for this good man that had fallen. This stone is badly worn and will soon be unreadable. - Cassville Republican, Aug. 25, 1904 - Obit: My Mother - Grandma Ennes, as she was called, was a native of Indiana, her parents moving west when she was young. Her parents? name was Terry. She was the fifth child. They named her Matilda. She was converted when thirteen years old, joined the M. E. church where she claimed membership till death called her home. She was married to Elisha Ennes in Arkansas, to which union was added eleven children, eight boys and three girls, four of them were called before her. The others are living east of Cassville near the old home where the family owns one acre of land as a burying ground. The father and mother and about thirty relatives are laid to rest. My mother was 82 years old last January 5. For many years she had been in poor health, had been treated with the best care we could give. About three weeks ago her declining health was such she took her bed. The family, fearing the result, sent for me near Monett and I went at once to see her. The last ten days were with her all the time till death came and ended her suffering. It was my deepest desire that mother should retain her faculties so she could tell us what she desired, for we all wish to hear our friends tell how Eternity opens before them. But O, sad to say, mother could not speak for two days. Over and over I bent above her dear old form hoping she would call my name once more. Her faded eyes would look at me but no word was uttered. My heart would almost break as I walked away, the tears falling from my eyes. Again I desired that she might die like one going to sleep but awful to say such untold suffering as she bore to the last moment. I can only say good by Dear Mother. J. W. Son of Willis Lyons Ennis and Sarah Ellen Copple. - Cassville Republican, Sept. 4, 1919 - Young Man is Stabbed With Knife - Eldon Ennes Receives Serious - Wounds Inflicted by Tom Luney - Quarrel Over Account - Eldon Ennes was stabbed twice in the left side and back with a pocket knife in the hands of Tom Luney Saturday afternoon at Oak Ridge baseball grounds as the result of a quarrel between Luney and Mel Ennes, a younger brother of Eldon, over an account which Mel Ennes had been trying to collect from Luney. The stabbing occurred about 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon at a ball game at Oak Ridge. Ennes bled profusely when struck by Luney and before he could be brought to Cassville to have his wounds dressed he was very weak and in a dangerous condition. Car trouble delayed getting him to town. His wounds were dressed by physicians Chandler and Bailey. They found that Ennes had received a serious wound in the left side of the back under the shoulder blade and another in the left side under and in front of the left arm under and in front of the left arm pit. The back wound was very deep and looked serious for sometime. Luney was arrested Saturday night upon a charge of felonious assault and brought to Cassville by Sheriff Houston and Deputy Reed. He succeeded in making bond Sunday for his appearance for preliminary hearing which is set for Sept. 13. The trouble between Luney and the Ennes boys is said to have come up over an account which Luney owes Mel Ennes for the season on a colt. Luney and Mel Ennes had been having trouble over the account. While Mel Ennes was in the military service his brother, Eldon, looked after his stock. Only in the way was Eldon interested in the trouble. At the Oak Ridge ball game Saturday the quarrel was renewed between Mel Ennes and Luney. Luney is said to have drawn a knife and Mel Ennes picked up a rock. Luney then jumped out of the way of Mel and attacked Eldon who was standing a few feet away and stabbed him. Mr. Luney claims that he used the knife to defend himself when hit by rocks thrown by the Ennes boys. Ennes is getting along fine and his physicians believe him to be out of danger. | Headstone Gerald Haddock Online Newspapers Census Phyllis Long Photo Donna Cooper Darla Marbut |
