As a very young man Talton became accustomed
to the murders which happened almost daily. Gunfights and bloodshed were
the general way of life in t he fued ridden area of BEAVER CREEK. His father
had killed several men.
He began his career of crime at a very early
age. When he was thirteen years of age his brothers, John S. and Marshall
were killed by George Hank. They were Confederate soldiers, and Hank commanded
a bushwhacking company known as the 10th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. Talt's
brothers were returning to the army from a furlough, when Hank took them
prisoners for purposes of robbery and revenge and then killed them. Talt
swore revenge, and started off by killing his brother's
assassins.
He became a deputy sheriff and a US Marshall
for the eastern District of K entucky.
Created with the killing of 100 men, though
the number was probably much l ess, he confessed to the killing of five
men.
1885: Killed his cousin Mark Hall and laughed
at the sheriff that tri ed to arrest him.
1866: Killed Henry Maggard in
cold-blood.
1875: Killed Don Pridemore and was
aquitted.
1881: Killed Matt Baker,
Aquitted.
1883: Killed his brother-in-law Henry Houk
and went free.
1891: Killed Police Chief Enoch B. Hylton,
brother-in-law of Doc Taylor.
1885: Killed Frank Salyer, did not admitt
to the killing. He was involved with Salyors wife Missus.
Arrested for the murder of Chief Hylton, Trial
lasted for five days, on Ja nuary 30, 1892 the jury found him
guilty.
He was the first man to hang for murder in
Wise County, Virginia on Septem ber 2, 1892.
Talt asked his friend Devil John Wright to
have his body brought to Kentuc ky for burial. He was buried in the Wright
Cemetery at Dunham, Kentucky ju st across the border from
Virginia.
He married Marinda TRIPLETT, daughter of Wilson

in childbirth or shortly after Mary Jane was born. Then he married Isabella
Seymour. My ggrandfather Thomas Dad Hepple b. 1858, son of George above,
said he used to beat on Isabella Seymour his second wife. Just before Thomas
Dad Hepple left home for America to marry his sweetheart Mary Richards, he
told his father if he beat his step-mother again he would have to go through
him or he would beat the .....out of him!!!!! He was always fed first. Then
the children ate. Then Isabella ate if there was food left. Pretty mean he
was.

Thomas was the son of Richard Hutchinson a
steam boatman and owner, Thos was a joiner and later a steam Tug manager
and owner. In 1881 he was living
with his maternal grandparents Thomas and Margaret Hind in 47 Dame Dorothy
Street Sunderland in a shared house with George and Eleanor Hind and their
children. In Nov 1890 he married
a widow with a daughter called Minnie. From then his fortunes seem to have
escalated. They had 4 children
and he can be found as a steam Tug Manager and Steam Tug
owner. His Will shows that he
also owned properties near where he
lived. We have copies of a mortgage
to a lady and the bills for having a house built probably where the pub the
New Derby stands now. In the
Kelly's Directory for Sunderland in 1909 he is described as a
Gentleman. His death was announced
in the local paper and there is a large pink granite obelisk style memorial
gravestone in Mere Knolls Cemetery in Seaburn where several family members
are buried.

In 150 years of the Maltese Cross by John
H Proud The Story of the Tyne
Blyth and Wear Tug Companies I found a reference to a tug called Miss Roberts
built for Hugh Roberts and sold on 4 times before being bought by T Hutchinson
Monkwearmouth in June
1897. She sank 4.5 miles east
of Hartlepool in December 1900.
The last tug was the Earl of Dumfries (see
newspaper cuttings), which blew up at sea, and the 4 crew were
lost. Two of the crew were nephews
of Thomas Hutchinson (Richard Hutchinson & Thos Swallow) and family legend
says that he did not recover from the loss.

He
died of sclerotic coma (ie. died of drink) brought on by his wife's death
and the loss of his ship with all hands, including two of his nephews. He
had a magnificent collection of antique silver, some of which his son Thomas
tired to buy at auction some years later, but was unable to outbid the London
dealers.

While I was researching the Smarts and Hendersons in Wallsend N.S.W.
I was referred to a Mrs Williams who was born in Wallsend in 1896. Her home,
on the main road to Teralba overlooks the gully towards Nannygoat Hill where
both families lived.
Mrs Williams told me that when she was a young lady, her father used
to say to her. "If you don't behave yourself, You will end up like that Mrs.
Henderson (Isabella Smart) who ran off with her
brother-in-law."
She pointed out a damp reedy area near the bottom of the hill saying
that this was where the Smarts lived. She also told me that the ruins of
the house where Martha Smart (Roxby) lived were still on top of the hill
at the right-hand (eastern) end.
There were ruins, but I feel that these were of a house built later,
as Mum
told me that the old house was not much more
than a slab hut, whereas the remains on the hill had brick
foundations.
I also spoke to Mr Bousfield living nearby
who confirmed the location of the Smart's house and also told me that the
deep water filled hole that used to be
in front of the house was filled in after his brother drowned in it
as a boy. This is probably the boggy patch still visible
(1981)
Isabella and Robert were married At the residence
of Rev. Tuck.

lay on her death bed, she whispered something to Jane her daughter. When
Isabella died Jane took a small tin box
that Isabella kept under the bed and burnt the contents without looking
at them, this was Isabella's dying wish. It is surmised that the box contained
papers relating to her marriages and children.

Isabell told me that Robert had been an invalid
for many years prior to his death
from Miners Lung, aged 51 years. She also stated that Robert was one
of the first group of miners anywhere in the world to receive compensation
for this complaint. It is said that this was brought about as a result of
the many miners who contracted the complaint from working in the poorly
ventilated parts of the Broken Hill mines reopening and making safe in the
years following "The Big Slip"
