Obituary for Garrie E. Barley (d1921)
Uncited clippings from the "Mattie Davis Martin Collection" of Doris Martin
Jablonski, 1998.
Garrie E. Barley - Son of W. O. And Dazarene BARLEY, was born on Oct. 29, 1900, and died Jan. 31, 1921 at Marne Island, Calif. He enlisted in the Marine service in Denver, Colo., June 7, 1920 and the following day was sent to Marne Island. He united with the Methodist Church at the age of 16 years. Thus, while young he sought to prepare for the summons which came to him so early in life. He death was a great shock to his family and friends, as it was not known but a few hours that he was sick. His father, four brothers and six sisters mourn the loss of a noble son and brother, while the community sustains the loss of a life dedicated to its welfare.
The body arrived at Hawk Point Feb. 7, and the following day at 1:00 p.m. the funeral services were held at the Baptist Church, after which it was laid beside that of his mother in Hawk Point cemetery. There were many beautiful flowers, tokens of the fondest affection; but more than all, the large American Flag shrouded it with distinctive honor. Representatives of the American Legion, relatives and many friends formed the procession to the grave. May God comfort the mourners. O. A. GORDON
