Recovered a stolen horse.
Last evening two horsemen attracted considerable attention by riding hurriedly onto the court house square and halting to confer with Officer John Manker. They said they had ridden 72 miles during the day, and their horses looked much the worse for the trip. At the corner of the square they were joined by two others whose horses were also badly fatigued. They proved to be men from Cherokee, Kas. (Kansas), looking for a stolen horse and the thief. The horse-a small pony-had been taken sometime ago by a man named Bert Allen. He procured the animal from the barn of one of the men when only the wife was at home, but he told the woman that her husband had sent him for it. Allen came to Carthage and traded the pony to Tom Miller for a gold watch. He was traced here and soon located in the west part of the city. Miller surrendered the pony to Allen's father upon the return of the gold watch and ten dollars in cash. The Cherokee men then took the horse, and this afternoon departed for their home in Kansas with the animal. All is an old acquaintance of the owners of the horse, and after they had procured their property they took no steps to have him arrested. Allen has been sick in bed for several days. Cherokee is only about 25 or 30 miles from here, and if the men rode 72 miles they must have taken a circuitous route.
