Mrs. M. C. Newport

Mrs. M. C. Newport (Ellen Brooks) was born in Kansas, near Lawrence, October 8, 1857. Died April 14, 1940, at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 6 days. She was the daughter of Matthew and Mary Achsa Brooks. Her father died when she was six months old.

At the age of fourteen she went to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, to live with an aunt. Here she attended school for six years. She came to Missouri where she taught school. October 10, 1878, she married Moses Calvin Newport. To this union were born five children: Lloyd Brooks of Los Angeles, Calif., Roy of Portland, Oreg., Ola of Tangent, Oreg., Marvin Jackson of Springfield and Mrs. Achsa Senn of Warsaw, Mo.

Mrs. Newport while a young girl seventeen years of age during a revival meeting at a Congregational church in Wisconsin, accepted Christ as her Savior. After coming to Missouri she joined a Baptist church. When she moved to Buffalo, Mo., she united with the First Baptist Church. She was a devoted Christian woman. For many years she was an active church worker, teaching Sunday school classes and active in the Woman's Missionary work of the church, also an ardent temperance worker.

She leaves her husband, five children, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two half brothers, Charley and Hiram Barrick, two half sisters, Mary Highfill and Mrs. James Austin, of Elkland, Mo. One half brother, John Barrick, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p. m. Tuesday at the Buffalo Baptist Church by Rev. J. E. Jackson. Burial was in Oak Lawn cemetery under direction of L. B. Jones.

Sarah Jane Davison

Sarah Jane Hardison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hardison, was born October 16, 1855, near Urbana, Mo., and passed away at Buffalo, Mo., Tuesday, April 9, 1940, at 8:00 p.m., having reached the age of 84 years 5 months and 24 days.

On September 1, 1875, she became the wife of John N. Davison who preceded her in death having passed away April 14, 1925. One child was born to this union, Mrs. C. W. Smithpeter, of Buffalo in whose home she was tenderly cared for until death called.

Mrs. Davison accepted the teachings of Christ, was baptized and united with the Buffalo Christian Church in 1884 during a series of meetings conducted by Rev. H. C. Patterson. Here she held membership for 56 years. Her husband was a member of the same church and, both being devoted to the cause, they exercised a united loyalty to the church, love for home and family, were true to their many friends and willing helpers to those less fortunate.

Her entire life was spent in Dallas county, the greater part of which she lived in Buffalo.

Those surviving are: The daughter, Mrs. C. W. Smithpeter of Buffalo, one sister, Maggie Sartwell of Urbana, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren, several half-brothers and sisters, several step-brothers and sisters, many other relatives each of whom showed kindness to Mrs. Davison in so many ways, and a host of friends in whose lives she will long live. One brother, John L. Hardison, of March, Mo., preceded her in death.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. H. Lynch at the Jones Funeral Home at 2:00 p. m., Thursday, April 11, followed by burial in Oak Lawn cemetery under direction of L. B. Jones.

Mrs. Wesley Cheek

Mrs. Ressie Cheek east of Long Lane received word Friday of the death of her step son's wife, Mrs. Wesley Cheek, who passed away Monday, April 15, in a hospital at Deming, N. M. She was 25 years of age. Burial was in Deming cemetery Wednesday, April 17.

Irenie Strickland Lynch

Irenie Lynch, daughter of Clement and Louisa Strickland, was born at Osceola, Mo., Dec. 12, 1854, and departed this life April 10, 1940, at the age of 85 years, 3 months, and 28 days, at her home on Washington Street, Sweet Springs, Mo.

She came with her parents to Dallas county during the Civil War at the age of 12 years where she grew up and was married to Geo. M. Dallas Holland. Of this union nine children were born of whom four daughters survive: Lillie Nicholas of Buffalo, Cora Highbarger, Orpha Wing and Naomah Jones of Sweet Springs. Laura Looney preceded her in death July 23, 1938, the rest having died in infancy.

Her husband passed away in 1884 and on Nov. 5, 1890, she was united in marriage to James A. Goodwin. To this union three children were born, viz., Nora who died in infancy, Mrs. Earlie Glenn, who died Feb. 19, 1920, and James Roy of the home address.

About 25 years ago they moved from Plad, Mo., to Saline County where Mr. Goodwin passed away in 1923. In the year 1927 she was again married to Augustus Lynch. He died one year and 6 months later. She reared two grandsons, Leonard and Orville Glenn, to young manhood, Orville making his home with her until the time of her death.

"Grandma" Lynch as she was generally known, was converted early in life and united with the Willow Springs Free Will Baptist Church at Plad, Mo. That membership has always been a pleasant memory to her. After leaving this county she united with the First Baptist Church of Sweet Springs. She loved to talk and sing about her savior and was ever ready to lend a helping hand. In her last years she was totally blind for about three years during which time she enjoyed having someone read from the Bible to her.

She was the last of a family of 12 children, her brothers and sisters preceding her in death. Besides the above named children she leaves 29 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and a host of nephews, nieces, friends and neighbors.

All her children were present during her illness and death with the exception of Mrs. J. D. Nicholas.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. E. Wylie at the Carter Funeral Home at 2:30 p. m., April 12 and burial was made in Fairview Cemetery of Sweet Springs under direction of Carter. Pallbearers were her grandsons: Harley Wing, Ray Looney, Orville Glenn, Carl Goodwin, Owen and Elgin Highbarger. Flower girls were Minnie Schlue, Ruth Akeman, Louise Flair and Jessie Nicholas.

A Whopper

Mrs. Linnie Strickland of Chicago vicinity brought an exceptionally large egg to the Reflex Saturday which weighed 6 1/2 ounces. It measured 9 1/4 inches around the long way and 8 inches the other. A normal sized egg does well to average 2 ounces.

Louisburg H. S. Seniors Visit Reflex Monday

Monday the graduating class of Louisburg high school, eleven in number, and Mr. Abe Baker, chaperon, visited the Reflex while in Buffalo.

The seniors are Naomi Martin, Emma June Bass, Lena Brown, Clara Bradshaw, Ernestine Jennings, Frances Alexander, Johnnie Martin, Jesse Ford, Finis Black, Allen Rich and Edgar House.

They are a well-behaved group of fine young folk of which their community and school are justly proud.

Secret Marriage Announced

Miss Frances Gillham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Gillham of Fair Grove, and Mr. Leo Vest, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Vest of Buffalo, were married Dec. 24, 1939, at Ozark. The ceremony was performed by Justice of the Peace M. R. Logan of Ozark.

Day-Dixon

Mr. and Mrs. Ford Dixon who have just returned from their honeymoon trip to Yosemite and San Francisco are now at their new home in Hollywood, Calif.

The couple were married April 6 at the Wee Kirk O' the Heather in Glendale, Calif. Over 10,000 couples have been married in this beautiful little church which is a replica of the one in Scotland attended by Annie Laurie during her lifetime.

The bride is the daughter of Archie A. Day of Buffalo, Mo., and has been employed in the Associated Telephone Co. in West Los Angeles since coming to California.

The bridegroom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Stanton Dixon of Hollywood, and is a graduate of the University of California. He is now employed as salestax auditor for the State of California.

Before an assemblage of bout 200 friends and relatives, the young couple were married by Rev. R. A. Young of the Rosewood Methodist Church of Los Angeles. In the absence of the bride's father, her uncle, Floyd J. Highfill gave her away.

The bride wore a long veil over a beautiful white satin gown, with lover's knots artistically placed in the sleeves and train. She carried a huge bouquet of gardenias and lilies of the valley with an orchid center.

Miss Elsie Day, sister of the bride, served as maid of honor. She wore a gown of chartruce georgette over net, and a halo of orange blossoms and carried a bouquet of rosebuds and sweetpeas with a gardenia center.

Geneva Brayton and Letha Hamilton, cousins of the bride, and Ruth Robertson served as bridesmaids. Each wore a dusty rose gown of embroideried marquesite and carried old fashioned nosegays. Their halos were of roses.

Fred Dixon, brother of the bridegroom, served as best man. Frank Dixon, also brother of the bridegroom, ushered with Allen Pope and James Brayton.

Immediately following the wedding, a reception for over 200 guests was given at the home of the bridegroom's parents. A beautiful decorated three tier wedding cake and two other huge cakes and ice cream was served to the guests. One room was practically filled with gifts brought by their many friends.

Mrs. Joe L. Burtin

The sudden death of Mrs. Joe L. Burtin Friday, April 26, 1940, at her home near Eureka, Kan., brought sorrow not only to her family, but also to many relatives and a wide circle of friends.

Rosa D. Stowe was born February 22, 1874, near Long Lane, Mo., and her age at the time of her death was 66 years, 2 months and 4 days.

At an early age she accepted Christ as her Saviour and united with the Baptist church of Cedar Ridge near Long Lane.

In 1899 she was united in marriage in Joe L. Burtin. To this union three children were born, Clyde of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, Mamie who died in infancy, and Mrs. J. F. Marshall of Eldorado, Kan.

Those left to mourn her passing are her husband and the two surviving children; two brothers, Jas. I. Stowe of Anadarko, Okla., and Geo.W. Adams of Eureka; one sister, Mrs. Ellis G. Phillips of Lamont, Kan., and numerous other relatives and friends.

She was a devoted wife and a kind and loving mother. She was very patient in her sickness, having been in poor health for many years, and was stricken seriously just a few hours before she entered the eternal rest.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p. m. Sunday, April 28, from the Baird Funeral Home of Eureka, with Rev. J. L. Durham officiating. Pallbearers were E. L. Barrier, T. E. Dawson, Orris Moore, Van Peebles, Colbert Huntington, Will Scott and T. E. Elder. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery near Eureka, Kan.

Edward O. Swift

Edward O. Swift, son of Willis H. and Eliza J. Swift. was born Jan. 26, 1870, in Dallas Co., Mo., and passed away June 21 near Buffalo at the age of 70 years, 4 months and 26 days. His parents and five brothers preceeded him in death.

He was married to Harriet T. Clayton March 15, 1891, who passed away 23 years ago. To this union eight children were born, all living. They are Floyd who is at home, Burley of Buffalo, Inez Cline of Long Lane, Lova Rider, Lenox, Mo., Lona Deckard, Buffalo, Ruby Kitzman, Edgewater, Colo., Jennie Householder of Milo, Mo., and Gussie Rose of Long Lane. Thirty grandchildren survive and one brother, Robert, of Elkland.

He was a loving father, brother and grandfather. He will be sadly missed by all including other relatives and a host of friends.

Mr. Swift had never united with any church but he told his children at his bedside he was ready to go.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Lester Slack at the Funeral Home Monday at 10 o'clock. Burial followed in Oak Lawn cemetery under direction of L. B. Jones.

Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Wedded 46 Years

Mr. and Mrs. Newton H. Franklin of 401 King street celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary Friday. They were married in Urbana, Mo., on July 12, 1894, by the same minister who had officiated at the wedding of Mr. Franklin's parents.

In honor of the occasion, a picnic was given in Lithia park, Ashland, for Mr. and Mrs. Franklin by their three sons and their families, Mr. and Mrs. Niel H. Franklin, Mr. and Mrs. Dale H. Franklin and Mr. and Mrs. Doyle C. Franklin, all of Medford.

Also attending the picnic Friday were Mrs. Franklin's sister, Mrs. Chloe Whillock, and her daughter, Mrs. Jean Bateman, and Robert Trumphour of Corvallis, a friend of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin's oldest granddaughter, Miss Barbara Franklin.

Mrs. J. R. Huff of Buffalo received word last week of the death of her brother-in-law, J. W. Flanagan, of Commerce, Okla., on Wednesday of last week, October 16. He had been in poor health for several years. He was an overseas veteran of the World war.

The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wash Flanagan, and was a native of Long Lane.

Funeral and burial were at Commerce Friday.
