August 20, 1897 — Local Happenings

J. W. Hoover, a prominent farmer was adjudged insane last Saturday and was taken to the Nevada Asylum where it is hoped he will soon recover.

Notes: This is James Willoughby Hoover (1844-1900), oldest child of James Bryant and Penelope (Tibbs) Hoover.

October 18, 1900 — March

J. B. Hoover is improving slowly since being thrown from his buggy and hurt.

Bryant Hoover started to Floyd Hoover's in Kans last week where they will feed cattle.

February 7, 1901 — March

J. A. Hoover of Olathe, Kans is a guest of his father, J. B. Hoover.

May 2, 1901 — March

J. B. Hoover went to town last week in his old buggy but returned in a brand fire new one and when he reached home his wife hardly knew him.

James B. Hoover died at his home near March last Monday morning of Bright's desease, aged 78 years and 5 months. Uncle Jim as he was familiarily called was one of our oldest and best citizens. He was born in Virginia in 1823 and came to Missouri with his parents about the year 1833 and soon located in Dallas county. He affiliated himself with the Baptist church in 1855 and lived a consistent Christian to his death. The funeral services were conducted by Rev J. M. Proctor assisted by Rev W. H. Swift and Elder W. D. Cheek after which the remains were interred in Macedonia cemetery by the Masonic fraternity of which he is an honored member. He leaves a wife, 78 children and grandchildren, and a host of friends to mourn his demise. The Reflex extends condolence.

To the Wardens and brethern of Riddick lodge No 361 A F & A N. Whereas it has pleased the Supreme Architect of the Universe to call from labor to rest our beloved brother James B. Hoover who died at his home in Dallas County, Missouri, October 28, 1901, aged 78 years and 6 months and

Whereas at a special communication of Riddick Lodge No 361 of which Brother Hoover was an honored member, the undersigned were appointed a committee by the W M to draft a resolution commemorative of our deceased brether's useful life and triumphant end.

Floyd Hoover and wife and mother are visiting his grandfather near Long Lane this week.

Notes: Floyd Hoover (1880-1901) might be Henry Floyd Hoover, son of Murrell Greenberry Hoover and Martha Ann Williams. His wife would be Exona A. Gaunt. Since his grandfather James Bryant Hoover was deceased by this time, the reference must be to his maternal grandfather John J. Williams.

January 30, 1902 — March

Bryant Hoover is trying his new saddle he purchased last week.

February 20, 1902 — March

Floyd Hoover and wife start for Kansas where they'll make their future.

March 6, 1902 — March

Henry Nelson is moving where Jim Hoover lived and Jim will start for Denver Colorado this week.

August 13, 1903 — Red Top

J. B. Hoover and wife and John Smith and wife have returned from a 18 months sojourn in the west to make old Dallas their future home.

August 13, 1903 — In Memoriam

In memory of Nancy C. Hoover nee Robinson who departed 31 July 1903. She was born 13 August 1839 age 64 years less 14 days. She married J. W. Hoover in 1861 who preceded her some three years, this union bore 8 children, two who died in infancy and the rest still live. She was united with the Baptist church - buried in Hill cemetery.

MRS. NANCY HOOVER GIVEN BIRTHDAY DINNER

Last Sunday, November 10, Mrs. Nancy Hoover who lives with her son, A. D. Hoover, southeast of Buffalo, was given a birthday dinner in honor of her 60th birthday.

There were present, besides the folks of the A. D. Hoover household, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Mashburn and daughter of Kansas City, Mr. and Mrs. Hosea Evans and family. Mr. and Mrs. Hosea Evans and family, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hoover and family, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Quisenberry, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hoover, and Mr. Henry Evans.

Notes: Mrs. Nancy Hoover is Nancy A. Adams, daughter of Wilson Adams and Malinda Ann Hildebrand, and second wife of William Elbridge Hoover. A. D. Hoover is Nancy's son Arthur David. Mrs. Hosea Evans is Nancy's daughter Lillie Bryant Hoover. Mrs. Raymond Mashburn is daughter Villa McKinley Hoover, who also married John Renfro. Mr. Oscar Hoover would be Nancy's step-grandson, son of John Willaby "Will" Hoover, son of William Elbridge Hoover and Mary A. Smith. Oscar was married to Ruby Quisenberry at this time. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Quisenberry might be her parents. J. W. Hoover might be John Willaby.

We are glad to hear of Mrs. Tom Sturdevant, Mrs. O. L. Hoover and Mrs. Mose Keith all being on the road to recovery.

May 9, 1940 - PERSONALS

Mrs. Nancy Hoover and grandson, Herbert Hoover, of Chicago community left first of the week for Quapaw, Okla., to visit her cousin, Mrs. Emma Williams, for about two weeks.

Birthday Dinner

A surprise dinner was given Mrs. Arthur Hoover last Sunday at her home near Chicago in honor of her 44th birthday. When Mrs. Hoover returned home from Sunday school she found a large number of friends and relatives waiting to celebrate the occasion with her. Those present were Mrs. Sid Rains of Buffalo, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Cline, Mr. and Mrs. Noah Cline and family, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Hoover, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Watkins and family, Mr. and Mrs. Will Hoover, Charley Clayton, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Hill and baby, Mr. and Mrs. Edd Hill and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Hill and family, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Williams, Leland Marshall and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hoover, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hoover and family, Mrs. Memie Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hoover and family, Dr. Orville Webb of Carthage, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Howerton and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Williams and son, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Davis and family, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hoover, Mrs. Ruby Eisman and family, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Davis and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Rob Evans and family, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hoover and family, and Mrs. Nancy Hoover. Mrs. Hoover's birthday was Saturday, June 29.

Notes: Mrs. Arthur Hoover was Lucy Lizzy Stever, born June 29, 1896, died Sept. 13, 1983, buried at Mt. Pleasant cemetery; daughter of Thomas J. Stever and unknown; married Arthur David Hoover July 4, 1915; married Roy Elton Newman Dec. 19, 1964.

Hoover - Webb

Miss Pansy Hoover, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Hoover, became the bride of Mr. Oliver Webb, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Webb, at 9 p. m. Saturday night.

A short sermon by Rev. Eddie Rains and vows were exchanged in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hoover with the immediate family present.

Miss Hoover is well known and has many friends here. She was a graduate of Buffalo high school and has been employed in Buffalo.

Mr. Webb is a Carthage boy and is employed at the powder company there.

A dinner was given in their honor at the home of the bride's parents Sunday and was attended by the following:

Greenwood, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hoover and son Jimmy, Mr. and Mrs. Will Hoover, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Davis and daughter Nancy Jean, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Long and son Jackie, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hoover, Ben Stafford and two grandsons, Henderson Southard. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Eisman and family, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hoover and son Herbert, and Nancy Hoover.
