Retired Frisco Conductor Succumbs After Five Years’ Invalidism. Funeral Wednesday.
Text Joe A. Breece, 57, retired railroad conductor, died at his home, 302 Euclid avenue, at 3:20 o’clock Tuesday morning, January 12. He had been an invalid for more than five years, following a stroke of paralysis which he suffered on March 31, 1927. He had been helpless since Christmas. He was apparently better on Monday, but became suddenly worse about 3 o’clock Tuesday morning and died peacefully within a few minutes. He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs. John Sturdivant.

Joseph Allen Breece was born January 4, 1875 at Ransom, Ill., the son of D. C. and Elizabeth Breece. The family moved to Monett when Joseph was 16 years old and he had lived here since that time.

He was married November 23, 1903 to Miss Louise Woolsey of Monett. They were the parents of one child, Fern, now Mrs. John Sturdivant.

Mr. Breece worked at various capacities at Monett, but in 1900 he was employed by the Frisco at train caller. He was given a position as brakeman out of Monett in September, 1902. In 1905 he was promoted to the position of freight conductor. He also served as an extra passenger man in 1916.

When his health became such that he was incapacitated from train work the Frisco gave him the position of station agent at Springfield. He was performing his duties in this position when stricken with paralysis.

Mr. Breece’s father died February 6, 1920 and his mother on October 10, 1928. A brother, John Breece, died in Monett several years ago.

Mr. Breece came to Monett when the town was in its infancy and grew up as one of its substantial and respected citizens.

Mr. Breece was a member of the Masonic Blue lodge, St. Alban Chapter and Harmony Commandery Knights Templar of Monett.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon January 13. Burial will be made in the I. O. O. F. cemetery with Masonic honors.
