Mr. Keen passed away Tuesday night at 7:30 of last week at his home southwest of town, following a sickness of several months. The services wee conducted by the Rev. Thurman D. Kelley, pastor of the Forest Park Baptist Church at Joplin, in a most impressive manner. He had been here for many years and was a frequent visitor before locating here for his permanent home and will be sadly missed by many. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. Many beautiful floral emblems were received from near and afar as an expression of the high esteem in which this splendid character was held. Oct. 22, 2014 Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO |
SSW: Jo Ann Edmondson - Research Note: Kansas City Star, Oct. 26, 2014 - Our father, Ireland Kimball, Kansas City, Missouri, born July 29, 1926, to Mary (Smith) and Frank Kimball in Shell Knob, Missouri, died October 22, 2014, from heart failure. He was 88. After graduating in 1943 from high school in Cassville, Missouri, where he met our mother, Jo Ann (nee Edmondson), Dad joined the Army and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He and Mom married in 1946 just before he was honorably discharged from the Army and began attending Drury College on the G.I. Bill. Dr. Kimball received his medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 1954 and his General Practice license in 1955 after completing his residency at Saint Louis Community Hospital. From 1955 to 1961, Dad first practiced family medicine in Salem, Missouri, and then in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, where, in addition to his private practice, Dad was employed as company physician by Dierks Lumber Company. In 1961, our family of five moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where Dad built a thriving practice in southern Platte County. Board certified in 1971 in Family Medicine, Dad served as Director of the Family Medicine residency program at North Kansas City Hospital, a program he conceived and helped implement, from 1976 to 1978. After at least five attempts, he finally retired in 2006 when he was 80. True to form, though, he kept his medical license current should he change his mind again. Born into a family of 11 children, Dad was the second-youngest of Mary and Frank's eight children: Gilbert, Floyd, Carl, Clyde, Roland, Gladys, Dad himself, and Wilma Jean. Frank remarried after Mary's death and had three more children: Gary, Larry, and Mary Sue. Although only Wilma Jean survives, Dad is beloved by many nieces and nephews from both his and our mother's sides of the family. Our parents, Ireland and Jo Ann (who pre-deceased Dad in 1989), produced three children: daughter Janet Ann Kimball; son Jay Warren Kimball, M.D. (Marta); and daughter Mary Ellen Kimball. Seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren call our dad "PaPa": Jan's daughters Amy Perkins (Shawn) and Lauren Aust; Jay and Marta's sons John and Paul, and daughter Joanna (our mother's namesake); and Mary's daughters Madison Cox and Taylor Cox. Amy and Shawn's sons George and Johnny, and John and Rachel's son Teddy are PaPa's great - grandchildren.
