IRELAND, John | Apr. 28, 1817 TN |
May 13, 1862 Flat Creek Twp., Barry Co., MO |
Research Note: Son of Deborah Huffman and William Ireland, husband of Mary Haddock, daughter of Chloe Albritton and Zachariah Haddock. Mary Haddock married, Oct. 25, 1846, to John Ireland in Barry Co., MO. Isaac Crow, J. P., married them. They made their home near Cassville, the county seat of Barry Co., MO, where they built up a fine farm. John was killed by Federal troops at his home in 1862. Mary remained on the farm and reared her children. - Cassville Democrat, April 13, 1907 - Military History of Barry County: John Ireland was called up at the hour of midnight, at his home 1 3/4 miles out on the Roaring River road and shot to death. - Darla Marbut reported: We were always told John Ireland was killed during the Civil War by bushwhackers. It was said he was hiding in a cave near or on what is now Roaring River State Park. There is an old road leading into the northeast end of the park. The dirt road is still in existence today and is Farm Road 1135. This road would have been near the area where John Ireland and Amos Horner lived. The story went that John Ireland was hiding with Amos Horner in the cave. They would come home at night to check on their families. Upon returning one evening John Ireland was killed in front of his family by bushwhackers. His young son, John Christopher Ireland who was 12 years old at the time, ran to Amos Horner's house and warned him that bushwhackers had killed his father. Amos was able to escape. Fredalene Cooper Horner, author of "A Horner Legacy" page 95, gave the name of the man hiding with John Ireland. She relates that Amos Horner joined the Union Army because of this incident. He joined and was a Private in Co. E. Reg't. 2nd Ark Cav. on Sept. 15, 1863. Fredalene Cooper Horner also indicates bushwhackers killed John Ireland. - Back of Stone | Photos BCG and HS Online Newspapers Phyllis Long Family History Darla Ball Marbut |

IRELAND, Mary Ellen (HADDOCK) | Oct. 29, 1826 Campbell Co., TN |
Oct. 18, 1910 Rural Seneca, Newton Co., MO |
Research Note: She was a daughter of Zachariah and Chloe (Albritton) Haddock and the wife of John Ireland. They married on Oct. 25, 1846 in Barry Co., MO. Darla Marbut says that the family tradition has it that "Aunt Pop" Ireland had the use of one arm. And that is true - because we have a photo of her online. Mollie Easley Maloney told the family how "Aunt Pop" was an expert at spinning in spite of her handicap. Online news obit reads that she died Oct. 17 near Seneca - Cassville Republican, Oct. 20, 1910 - Mrs. Mary Ireland, familiarly known all over this county as "Grandma Ireland" passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. N. G. Cox, near Seneca, Oct. 17, 1910, at the ripe old age of 85 years. She visited in Cassville a few weeks ago and although feeble, she appeared to be in good health. Shortly after going back to her daughter's she was stricken with paralysis which caused her death. Mary Ireland was the widow of John Ireland who was killed during the Civil War while at his home southwest of Cassville. She came to this county with her parents when ten years of age and settled 74 years ago on what is now known as the Will Lewis farm on White River. At that time there were very few families in the county. The family, of which Mrs. Ireland, for years, has been the only survivor was one of the pioneers of Barry County. She was a lady possessing all those high and excellent traits of character, those simple, homely virtues of the pioneer, the class of citizens, who blazed the way and laid the foundation of our civilization and American institutions. She was a devoted member of the Baptist church and one of our noblest and best citizens. She leaves two sons, Christopher Ireland, south of town, John Ireland who lives in the west and a daughter, Mrs. N. Cox of Seneca. Her remains were shipped to Cassville for interment in Oak Hill Cemetery. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. J. T. Brattin. - Donna's Note: The stone has Oct. 18, 1910 as her date of death. Her death certificate reads that she died Oct. 18th and that she was born Oct. 26th and not the 29th as the stone reads. - Photo of Mary - Back of Stone | Online Photo Online Newspapers Darla Ball Marbut Photo BCG and HS Death Certificate Online Obit Donna Cooper |

JORDAN, Maude (TRIM) | Apr. 17, 1867 Cassville, Barry Co., MO |
Nov. 6, 1940 Reynolds Hosp., Neosho, Newton Co., MO |
Research Note: Her death certificate reads that her father was John Trim, born TN, and that her mother was Louisa Place, born TN. She was widowed. W. L. Price, Neosho, MO, was the informant. Ira Nickle says that he thinks that Maud Jordan's death certificate is incorrect. It was reported her father was John Trim and her mother was Louisa Place. The January 20, 1917 issue of the Democrat has John Trim's death date as January 20, 1917 and that he was 46 years of age. He would have been born in 1871. Maud Trim Jordan was born on April 17, 1867 in Cassville. William Ellis Trim married Louisa Logan on February 25, 1866. I believe her father was William E. Trim unless there was another John Trim who married a Louisa Place. | Photo BCG and HS Death Certificate Donna Cooper Note Ira Nickle |

The grief stricken father and grandmother at once called physicians who found the little child in a very critical condition. Her body was badly bruised and the bone of the upper right arm was broken. Examination indicated every serious internal injuries especially of the spine and nervous system. Mr. Joslin has his carpenter shop equipped with gasoline power and was busily engaged Friday afternoon on work which was necessary to have the engine in operation. His mother, who makes her home with him and had asked Ruth to bring her some shavings from the shop with which to start a fire for preparing supper.
