Research Note: Son of Elias Horine, born Washington Co., MO and Mary Raber, born PA. His wife was Mary Frances Keller. - Cassville Republican, Jan. 30, 1919 - Harrison Horine died at his home in Cassville Wednesday afternoon, January 22, 1919, at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 10 days, following an illness of long duration. He had been confined to this home nearly all of the time for the past six or eight months and had been at his place of business with the Cassville Produce and Seed Co. of which he was a member, very little for a year or two on account of his failing health. The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home. The services were conducted by Rev. Will Ireland, pastor of the Baptist church in this city. A large crowd of relatives and friends were in attendance. In his honor the business houses of Cassville were closed for one hour during the funeral services. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery. Harrison Horine was one of Barry County's well known and highly respected citizens. He had lived in Barry County since 1858 and served the people of the county as county assessor and as public administrator with credit to himself and to the county. For many years he had been a faithful member of the Baptist church and had always been a liberal supporter of the church and it institutions. Following the Civil war he was one of the men who took an active part in the affairs of the county and in the pursuits of peace. He was Captain of the Home Guards and did a great deal of work in helping the old soldiers with their claims. He had served as Mayor of Cassville for years, was Justice of the Peace in this township. He was a native Missourian, having been born in Washington county, March 12, 1842. In 1856 he with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elias Horine, moved to Barry County. During the civil war he espoused the cause of the Union and served in the Union army. He was a Sergeant in the First Arkansas Cavalry in which so many Barry County men did serve. Soon after he was discharged from the army at the close of the war, he was married to Miss Mary F. Keller. To them six children were born, three of whom Mrs. Julia Turner, wife of F. A. Turner, E. K. Horine and Miss Bessie, all of Cassville, are living. He is survived by his wife, three children, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers, Michael Horine of Cassville and Hiram Horine of Monett and one sister, Mrs. Thomas Carlin of Pierce City. Cassville,

SSW: Samantha - Inscription: "Father" - Research Note: According to his death certificate he was widowed. He was a son of Elias Horine, born Washington Co., MO and Mary Raber, born PA. - Cassville Republican, December 30, 1926 - Michael Horine, prominent resident of Cassville and a pioneer citizen of the county, died at his home in Cassville at 8 o'clock Friday morning, December 24, aged 87 years, after an illness covering several months complicated by the infirmities of old age. He had failed in health rapidly during the past three years but his remarkable constitution enabled him to continue to get about until a short time ago. He was born October 23, 1839, in Washington County, Missouri, being the second son of Judge Elias and Mary (Raber) Horine, who came to Barry County and located in 1858. He was educated in the schools of Washington and Barry Counties. He was married to Miss Nancy Fly, a native of this county, in 1866. To them six children were born, three died in infancy; Mrs. Cora Hawk died about three years ago and P. E. Horine and Miss Etta survive their father. Mrs. Horine died in 1918. He is also survived by one brother, H. S. Horine, of Monett, and one sister, Mrs. Thomas Carlin of Pierce City. During the Civil War Mr. Horine enlisted in the Union army, serving three years in Co. F, 24th Missouri Infantry Volunteers. Soon after the close of the war he was appointed Sheriff and collector but declined to qualify. Later he was appointed circuit clerk and ex-officio recorder. He was twice elected to that office, serving altogether ten years. He then returned to his farm in the north part of the county where he lived until he moved to Cassville in the late eighties to engage in the mercantile business as a partner with the late George M. Goodnight. The firm built up a large business but the disastrous fire of April 1893 destroyed their large stock of merchandise and the earning of a lifetime went up in smoke. Mr. Horine was for years a leading member of the Baptist church and an active member of the Masonic fraternity. He was one of the county's most highly respected citizens and had a host of friends all over Barry and in adjoining counties who will be grieved to learn of his passing. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. Chas. Vansandt; interment in Oak Hill Cemetery. The Masonic funeral service was given at the grave by Pythagoras Lodge A. F. and A. M. No. 383, of which the deceased had for many years been a member. - Goodspeed's 1888 History: Michael Horine, ex-circuit clerk and recorder of Barry Co., MO, was born in Washington Co., MO on Oct. 23, 1839. He is a son of Elias Horine, who was born in Washington Co., MO on June 11, 1816. The latter is a farmer by vocation. He married in his native county Mary A. Raber, a native of PA, who was born in 1818, and to them were born eight children, seven of whom are living. Elias Horine removed his family to Barry Co., MO in 1858 where he afterward served as county and probate judge. He now resides at O'Day (Washburn). His wife died in Nov. 1878. Michael Horine is their second child. He was educated in Barry Co. and was there married to Nancy S. Fly, a native of the county, who was born in 1849. They have three children: Preston E., one of the local educators of the county, Mary E. and Nancy Cora. For years Mr. Horine has been one of the most highly respected citizens of the county and has filled various offices of trust. He was appointed as sheriff and collector, but the "ousting" ordinance passed after the Civil War ousted him and after re-appointment preferred not to qualify. He was appointed circuit clerk, and was afterward elected for two terms, thus serving in that capacity for nearly ten consecutive years, and for the same time he served as ex-officio recorder. Having been defeated for the same office in 1878 he retired to his farm where he now resides. He has a nice farm of over 150 acres, and is an enterprising farmer. He is one of those spirited men who are always interested in public enterprises and the development of the country. Politically he is a Republican and religiously is a Baptist. He is a member of the A. F. and A. M. He was in the US Army three years, a member of Co. F, 24 MO INF Volunteers; is now a member of the G. A. R. at Purdy. - June 23, 1917, Saturday, Cassville Democrat - Golden Wedding Anniversary: Fifty years ago, June 20, 1867, John J. McNatt was in the mercantile business at old Gadfly now Corsicana, and he paid courtship to Miss Catharine Blankenship, a daughter of the late Mr. L. J. and Mrs. Martha Blankenship a well known family of that section. On the date above mentioned Rev. W.W. Wood married these young people. The next day after the wedding, the happy couple accompanied by Michael Horine and Miss Samantha Fly now Mrs. Horine, all rode horseback to Aurora, to attend an infare given by the grooms parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John C. McNatt of that place, then composed of about half a dozen houses. The family has been very successful in life having lived at McNatt, McDonald county and are now residing near Neosho. Mrs. McNatt is a sister of Mrs. P. E. Horine, of this city. - Another Photo Death Certificate

Research Note: His death certificate reads that George Houston and Rhoda Curtis were his parents names. Minerva was given as his wife's name. He was age 63 years, 9 months and 29 days old at the time of his death. Mrs. W. Houston, Monett, MO, was the informant. - Cassville Democrat, March 29, 1934 - Funeral Held At Community Building In Cassville Today, Thursday Afternoon Interment In Oak Hill - Will Houston, old time and well known Barry County citizen, died suddenly, Saturday morning at home in Monett, following a heart attack. Bill, as he was familiarly known, had been suffering for the past few weeks with his heart. Friday, before his passing, he and his good wife had gone to Bentonville, Ark., where he consulted a specialist. They stopped in Cassville on their return home and visited with friends, and he was in his usual jolly mood. He slept soundly that night until about 4 o'clock, when he complained of severe pain in his breast. Medical aid was immediately summoned but he passed on at about 8 o'clock that morning. His death was a complete shock to his many friends throughout the county. He was one of the county's best known men and had many friends in every part of the county. He had always taken a prominent part in all matters of interest to his county and was one of the county's biggest hearted men. He was a Democrat politician and served the county as Assessor, Sheriff and Collector and made a splendid official. He was exceeding popular and always pulled a heavy vote from the opposing political side. Always ready to aid those in distress, he never turned a deaf ear to appeals for aid and would have taken his shirt off his back to aid a friend in need. Bill Houston was a likeable character, one that made friends quickly and in many cases, it has been known he gave his last dollar and in some instances, obligated himself to aid some family which had been visited by death or lost their all by fire. It was the writers good fortune to have known him long and well and we only knew him to esteem him more highly as the years passed by. Today we miss his kindly smile and friendly greeting, we long in vain to hear the ring of his jovial laughter and to feel again his genial presence. The sunset speaks but feebly of the glories of another day. All is well. He was a devoted husband. If there was ever a home filled with love and devotion, it was this one. Real pals in every sense of the word; unkind words being few and far between. He was married in 1891 to Miss Minerva Tolby of Cassville. He is survived by his widow, two daughters: Mrs. J. R. Trolinger of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Mrs. Gladys Brown of Los Angeles, Calif., and a grandson, Houston Trolinger. He also leaves two brothers, James Houston of Kansas City, and John Houston of White Rock, Utah. And five sisters, Mrs. Tony Hilton and Mrs. Lena Anderson of Los Angeles, Mrs. Maggie Purviance, Mrs. Laura O'Harrell and Mrs. Bland Jones of Kansas. William Houston was the son of George and Rhoda Houston and was born in Tennessee in 1870. He was the oldest of twelve children. The family came to Barry county when William Houston was an infant and lived on a farm on Flat Creek near Cassville, where the parents died. Gene Frost of Cassville, probate judge, and Dr. B. B. Kelly of Purdy, close friends of the deceased, will make a short talks at the services. Music will be given by a quartet composed of Mrs. Glen Peal, Mrs. John Ray, Chas. SSW: Evan Marshall - Research Note: She was a daughter of Lloyd and Mary Jane Hays. - Cassville Democrat, June 6, 1946 - Mrs. Hutchens Left More Descendants Thank Any In State: Mrs. Martha Hutchens long time respected resident of Cassville, who was taken to her last resting place in Oak Hill Cemetery on Memorial Day, left more direct descendants that any person known to have passed away in Missouri. The number totaled 136 and included 11 living children, 51 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren and seven great-great- grandchildren. The group, if all lived in one place, would compose a formidable community and since most of them are engaged in various lines of business, it would be self-sustaining and provide most every convenience which would be needed for comfort. Many friends of this old family paid their last respects at the Culver Funeral Home for the service conducted by the Revs. C. F. Siler and Earl F. Johns. - According to her death certificate she was widowed. She was a daughter of Lloyd Hayes and Mary Jan Hayes. Mrs. Jennie Burks of Cassville, MO, was the informant. Online Obit
