HANDY, Austin L. Jan. 16, 1822
Clark Co., IL
Jan. 16, 1906
Exeter,
Barry Co., MO
Research Note: The Handy family thinks he is buried here. His last wife Martha Emaline (Dykes) (Chastain) (Handy) Cooper, is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery according to her death certificate, no stone found. Martha E. Chastain, age 55, second married Austin Handy, age 76, on Mar. 22, 1898 in Butterfield, Barry Co., MO. - 1900 Census they are in Butterfield, Barry Co., Missouri. - Biographical History of Central Kansas, Vol. I, p. 749 - Austin Handy was reared in the state of his nativity, and after arriving at years of maturity he engaged in farming, remaining in Illinois until 1874. In that year he came to Kansas, locating in Rice county, where he secured a homestead claim. Like most pioneers he had but small means, having "all to make and nothing to lose." He underwent all the deprivations and hardships incident to pioneer life, but he was not afraid of hard work and the obstacles and difficulties which beset his path were overcome by determined purpose and unfaltering industry. Game was plentiful in this locality at that time, but he had no time to hunt, as his time was fully occupied in his labors to improve his farm. He was obliged to go a long distance to mill and his nearest trading point was Raymond, but the rapid advancement of civilization soon brought to this locality all the comforts of the older east, and he lived to see the country dotted by thriving towns and cities, well cultivated farms and inhabited by a prosperous and contented people. He was an active worker in the ranks of the Republican party, and on its ticket was elected to a number of positions of honor and trust, including that of justice of the peace. His first wife, who bore the maiden name of Hannah Bennett, was reared in Illinois and was a daughter of James Bennett, a native of the Empire state. Mrs Handy died on the old homestead in Rice county, in 1883, and the father was again married, his second union being with Mrs. Sarah Graves, but this union proved an unhappy one and in 1897 he sold his property to his son and joined another son in Missouri. He has been a third time married, and he now resides in Barry county, Missouri, living retired from the active duties of life. He has reached the ripe old age of seventy-nine years. Unto Austin and Hannah Handy were born eight children, namely: Thomas, a resident of Missouri; William, James, also a resident of Missouri; Millard, whose residence is not known; Lincoln, a farmer of Rice county; Douglas, who died when young; Amanda, who departed this life at the age of eighteen years; and George, a resident of Stafford county, Kansas. Mr Handy served with distinction in the Mexican war, having entered the army from Illinois and served until the close of the struggle. In his social relations he was connected with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Note

Higgs on Nov. 21, 1873 in Barry Co., MO. - Cassville Republican, September 23, 1897 - Died at her home, Sept. 20, Martha, wife of S. R. Higgs, of heart failure, age 38 years. She leaves a husband and five children to mourn her loss. She was thought to be in her usual health and was attending a meeting held near her home. She attended three services on Sunday and returned home late at night. She had just witnessed the conversion of one of her children and seemed to be in great peace. She spoke a few motherly words to the family and soon fell asleep. Awaking about the usual hour Monday morning, she called the girls and spoke to her husband about the occupation of that day and seemed to be in a very happy state of mind, when suddenly her voice hushed and she began gasping her breath. Her husband being alarmed raised her head but she was gone to speak no more. She made a profession of religion about ten years ago and united with the Baptists at New Hope where she lived as a worthy member. She was laid to rest at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery after services by Rev.'s Williams and Stodgill. Rev. J. W. Ennes. - Another Photo - Another Photo Census

Those present were: Elmer Charter, Knox, Ira and Lon Garrison and families, Mrs. Cora Brattin, Mrs. Lizzie Warren, Mrs. Zola Higgs and families, with the mother, who no doubt was the happiest one present, because to be with all the children once more was an occasion, that many mothers do not enjoy these days. From best reports it seems that Horrall's son and Blankenship had become engaged in a dispute the day before over some cattle of Horrall's that had jumped in Blankenship's pastured land. The affair did not stop at that point. Saturday William Horrall and Blankenship met and another dispute arose. Hot words were passed and a fight ensued. Horrall received a cut just over the left lung and one on the neck.
