Notes From the President... Almost two years have passed since the beginning of a new millennium. We look back with pride and enthusiasm as we review the progress and events that have happened at the Webster County Historical Museum. Those who have brought items to display in the Museum have ehlped many of us relive some of the past years of our lives. Many of the younger generation were made aware of the changes in our lifestyle in the past 50 to 100 years. For others, learning about some of the events that happened in Webster County was new information to them. hwether it was items on display, pictures, or attending a special program on historical events in our county, more than 3300 visitors toured the Museum over the past 7 months. The Webster County Historical Museum is operated by volunteers who donat many hours of their time to organize and keep the Museum open for public viewing and give imformation about Webster County. The Museum, and the Webster County Historical Society that maintains it, have no regular funding. We rely soley on income from dues, gifts, grants, items sold in the Museum gift shop, and fund-raisers. Donation are always welcome to help cover expenses incurred inthe operation of the Museum and our preservation projects. Long-range plans will require funding behond revenue raised for regular operating expenses. The help ensure a place to collect, preserve, and display items of historical significance to our county, donations are much needed. As we move toward a new year and our nation is still in shock from terrorist attack, let us be mindful that the heritage of our nation, state, or county is what has made America and our communities what they are. We still have an obligation to our children and future generations to preserve history while it is still available to us. This is the goal of the Webster County Historical Society. The Webster County History books have arrived and are available through the Museum. The two-volume set has over 1100 pages plus index and sells for $75.00. Mail orders may be obtained by sending a check for $80.00 (includes $5.00 for shipping), made out to the Webster County Historical Society, to PO Box 13, Marshfield, MO 65706. Orders are being mailed out as soon as possible and should arrive in plenty of time of the holidays (library rate postage takes about 7 days delivery time). Get your now before they sell out again!
Planning Committee The Planning Committee met with the Executive Board following the November meeting. Chairman Steve Page presented the list of recommendations for short and longo-range goals of the Society. These included a 2002 budget, and amount to be held in financial reserve, and a list of priorities for the future needs of the Society. Contact a member of the Board with any questions regarding these recommendations.
MEETING DATES The Webster County Historical Society receives no city, county, state or federal taxes. We MUST be self-supporting. |
Museum News The bake sale held October 5th, 2001, was a big success despite the cold rain. The Society raised over $700. Thanks to all those who helped, and also to all of you who made a purchase. The quilt show closed October 31st. This was a hit again this year, with over 80 quilts on display from Harvest Days through October. The holiday open house at the Museum was December 8th. If you did not have a chance to see the Museum all decked out in holly, cedar, and pine, etc, cand still do so through December 21st. New Museum Hours - Since November, the Museum has been open Sunday - Friday 1 pm to 4 pm. this will continue until December 21st, after which time a tentative plan is to close and then reopen with a Sunday only schedule for January, February, and March. Other hours will still be available by apointment. As you Museum Director, I cannot adequately exzpress my appreciation for all the help and support I have received. The Success we have had could not have been achieved without all the many Museum volunteers and others who helped out in various ways. Linda Blazer
Remember! Shop the Museum Gift Shop for you holiday gift-giving needs. The new 2001 Treasured Scenes Ornament - the "Ritz Theatre," sixth in the series, is available, as well as Jerry Rice prints and numerous books of local interest. Your purchases are tax exempt and all proceeds benefit the Historical Society. The Society members extend their condolences to the family of Juanita Beck Hyatt. Juanita and her family have long been supporters of the work of the Webster County Historical Society, and Juanita was a lifetime member.

Party Time! In lieu of a December meeting, Talt and Paula Greer have invited the
Historical Society members and guests to their home (129 S. Elm) for a
holiday party. Festivities begin at 7 pm on Tuesday, December 18th. For more information, call Paula at 468-2324. The Nominating Committee presented the following slate of officers for 2002 and they were installed at the November meeting: President - Paula Greer The old-time recipes collected at the September outing to Walnut Springs Farm are int eh process of being put together. It has been suggested taht these be added to the booklet compiled in 1998 (if you have one). Pages will be copied and punched and can easily be added to that previous book. For those who do not have the first edition, covers will be provided
