NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT: REACHING OUR GOALS When the Webster County Historical Society acquired the former Carnegie Library building in 1997, they established goals to meet in order to collect and preserve the history of Webster County. These goals were planned to be accomplished by using the former library building for a museum to display items, pictures, documents, and newspaper accounts of the past history of our county. One of the first goals was to return the “run-down” building as much to its’ original condition as possible. Everyone knew this would be a long, difficult project with only volunteer labor and no permanent funding. The printing of a new Webster County History Book was another goal, the information for which the members of the Society had already begun to compile. Thanks to the help of many concerned people, several of those goals envisioned four or five years ago have been, or are in the process of being reached. The building is not completely remodeled, but if funds become available, we see most of the original plans being completed perhaps within the next year. The History Book was printed in two large volumes, and now , due to the demand, a reprint is in process. The response from the classes in our schools and other groups who have toured the Museum has been very positive. Because of the increased interest in the Museum, it now requires over 100 volunteers to keep the Museum open during the summer months. The Society could not do this without all the wonderful people who so generously give their time. As we continue to strive for more funding in order to reach the rest of our goals, we encourage everyone who has an interest in preserving the history of our county to drop by the Museum and see the many items on display and perhaps learn a little more of what it was like in past years. -Don Rost, President

Book News Over 100 book orders were received by the pre-publication deadline of May 31st, and the books have been ordered. If you have not already done so, you may reserve your copy by stopping by the Museum, calling 468-7407, 859-2036 or 859-7700, or visit our Web-site to access an order form. The price is $75.00 per set (plus $5 if mailing is necessary) and must accompany your order. CENTURY CLUB The Century Club and Century Club Memorial plaques in the Museum have been updated and now include all donations and memorials made through May 1st. Century Club and Memorials are available to anyone making a donation of $100 or more and are an excellent way of recognizing your family’s place in Webster County’s history. Museum News The Museum opened May 7th with a special exhibit on Photography. The schedule will be the same as last year, Sundays 1-4 P.M. and Monday—Friday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., through October. Want to help? Call 468-7407. On May 17th, 21st and 22nd, over 1500 students, faculty and helpers from Hubble, Webster and Shook Elementary toured the Museum. Over 20 volunteers were on hand each day to assist with the tours. The students learned about the 1880 Cyclone, Photography, Del Massey and Family History. We appreciate the guest speakers and all volunteers, without whom the tour would not have been possible. All county schools are invited to schedule a tour by calling 468-7407. Other groups touring the Museum have been the Webster County Opry Hall of Fame and the Class of 1951. In other Museum news, volunteers are now working to list all Certificates in the permanent ledger and on Individual Control Cards. When completed, it will be much easier to look up information on Museum items. Thanks to Bud Krueger for organizing this work, and to the volunteers who are helping. Also, a beautiful new cabinet and sink unit, along with a hot water heater, has been installed in the Marshfield Room. The Society has made application with the Missouri Historical Records Grant Program for a $5,000 grant to help purchase preservation supplies for the Museum. Thanks to those who helped compile information for the application.

GIFT SHOP REMEMBER to shop the Museum Gift Shop for your gift-giving needs. In addition to the many assorted items available, including the limited-edition ornaments and Jerry Rice prints, we also have reprinted copies of the 1880 Marshfield and Her Cyclone, 1880 Goodspeed, 1955 History of Webster County, and an Index to the afore-mentioned books. These books are soft-backed, spiral-bound and sell for $10.00 each. A new item is the 1909 Plat Map of Webster County which is indexed and sells for $7.00. All proceeds benefit the Historical Society. Volunteers continue to work on probate court documents at the courthouse. This has now been moved to the southeast corner of the basement. If you can work an hour or two now and then, please do so. This winter, perhaps in January, February, and March, we will again make an extended effort to resume work on this project. The Museum will open at 9:00 a.m. on July 4th and remain open until 4:00 p.m. Volunteers for the 4th are being scheduled in one hour increments. If you can help, call the Museum. Remember! 2001 dues are past due! Provided herein is a list of paid members for 2001 and those who have recently paid as a lifetime member. If you do not find your name on the list and believe you have paid, please contact the treasurer at 859-7700. Dues are $5.00 annually or $50 for a lifetime membership.
