ABRAM V. WORMLEY

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 483:

Abram V. Wormley

(Farmer and Stock raiser, Section 14, Post-office, Schell City).

Abram V. Wormley, the eldest of a family of four children, was born August 19, 1838, in Kendall county, Ill., and from his earliest recollection has been engaged principally in agricultural pursuits.  His father, William M. Wormley, was born in 1805, in Steuben county, N. Y., and in 1836 he was married in Kendall county, Ill., to Miss Elizabeth Van [F]leet, whose birth occurred in Germantown, N. J.  Abram has two brothers and a sister, whose names are Alfred, George and Susan.  His life has not been marked by any striking deviation from the ordinary channels of his chosen avocation, and yet he has pursued his way quietly and energetically until a point in material affairs has been reached which he may refer to with pride.  March 14, 1864, he was married to Miss Marian King, who was born in Illinois September 30, 1844.  After this event Mr. Wormley continued to make his home in Oswego, Ill., until 1868, when he moved to Shabbona, returning thence in eight years to Oswego.  Two years later he again located at Shabbona and in October, 1879, he came to this county, settling upon his present farm in section 14.  His comfortable homestead embraces eighty acres, while in another tract he has forty acres of timber-land well adapted to the general purposes for which it is used.  For four years Mr. Wormley was a soldier during the war.  July 10, 1861, he enlisted in Co. I., 36th Illinois volunteer infantry, Fourth Army Corps, and remained in service until being mustered out October 8, 1865.  Mr. W. and wife have three children:  Emma E., born July 27, 1866; William M., born November 27, 1867; Nellie J., born February 19, 1874.  He is a Democrat politically; for some years he has belonged to Raven Lodge No. 303, A. F. and A. M., at Oswego, Ill., and with Mrs. Wormley he belongs to the Methodist Church.

ANOTHER SPLENDID CITIZEN OF THIS COUNTY PASSED AWAY SUNDAY NIGHT

     A. V. Wormley, eighty-seven years old, passed away at his home in Clear Creek township Sunday night, of the infirmities of advanced age. He had been in poor health for several years. Mr. Wormley is survived by his devoted wife, his son, Wm. Wormley, who lived with his parents, and two daughters, Mrs. W. B. Flynn of Nevada and Mrs. Jesse Slayback of Bacon township. Mr. Wormley came to Vernon county from Illinois more than forty years ago and located on a farm in Clear Creek township, where he had since lived except for a short time which he spent in Nevada. Mr. Wormley was a member of the Baptist church, the Masonic lodge of Nevada and the G. A. R. He was a kind husband, an indulgent parent and an honorable citizen. He leaves a host of friends who will be grieved to hear
of his death. The funeral was held at the home at ten o'clock Tuesday morning and burial was at the Leffler cemetery in Bacon township.

Death of Mrs. A. V. Wormley.

Mrs. Marion King Wormley, one of the early settlers residing in the Portia vicinity northwest of El Dorado, died at her home last Monday, her death being due to a stroke of appoplexy. She was apparently in her usual health Sunday, but Monday morning her son, William Wormley, who made his home with his mother, was unable to arouse her and she died a short time later.

Mrs. Wormley was born September 30, 1844, and was over 82 years of age. She was one of the early settlers of that vicinity, she and her husband, A. V. Wormley, who preceded her in death last December, having resided on the home place for a period of almost forty-five years. She was a most excellent woman and was held in the highest esteem by the people in the neighborhood where she had resided for so many years.

She is survived by the following children: William Wormley of the home address, Mrs. Emma E. Flynn of Nevada and Mrs. Nellie J. Slayback of Vernon county.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Broughton, were held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock and interment was in the Lefler Cemetery.
