PETER G. WOODS

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 514-515:

Peter G. Woods

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 19, Post-office, Walker).

The parents of Mr. Woods deserve special mention in any history referring to—it matters not what portion of Missouri, for they were numbered among its pioneer settlers, and formed one family of a company who constituted the first inhabitants of Cooper county.  Green and Mary (Estes) Woods were both natives of Tennessee and came to Cooper county in 1821.  Peter Woods, Green’s father, was a Baptist preacher and a man of much social and moral worth.  In fact both the Woods and Estes families were members of that denomination.  Peter G. Woods was one of ten children; his parents, now deceased, were estimable people and highly respected, and their son has inherited largely those qualities which go so far towards gaining the good will of upright people.  He grew up to a farm experience, though deprived of more than limited educational opportunities, and when 21 years old he started for himself as a farmer, renting land for a while.  September 26, 1848, he was married to Miss Nancy J. Hagan, who was born March 25, 1833.  At this time Mr. Woods was not 22 years of age, for he had been born in Cooper county, Mo., December 28, 1826.  His wife died May 7, 1877, leaving the following children: Mary F., Louisa J., Adella J., Robert G., Emma A., Jalie K., Charles T., John M. and Ada A.  March 13, 1884, he was again married, Mrs. Eliza J. Thixton, née Gist, becoming his companion.  She was born in Jackson county, Tenn., December 9, 1832.  After his first marriage Mr. Woods farmed in Moniteau county, Mo., until 1882, when he came to his present location in this county.  He owns a well-improved farm of 220 acres, stocked with good graded cattle, and shows in the management of his place that he is thoroughly familiar with the manner to properly conduct a superior farm.  He takes a warm interest in educational matters and is recognized as a man practical and methodical in all his operations.  Politically he is a Republican; in religious affairs he adheres to the doctrine of the Christian denomination.
