HENRY WHITE

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 762:

Henry White

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 22, Post-office, Enoch).

But few residents there are in Vernon county who have been located a longer period within its limits than the subject of this sketch, and though not a native of this county, he might almost be regarded so, for he grew up here from about the age of three years.  Dr. James White, his father, now deceased, was for upwards of 40 years closely identified with the interests of this community as one of its influential citizens, and it is but proper that short reference should be made to his successful life at this place.  Born in Orange county, N. Y., in 1809, he left there with his parents when he was 15 years old, and went to Columbus, O., where he served as deputy warden of the State penitentiary.  Subsequently he moved to Illinois and on July 4, 1840, he located in Vernon county, entering almost immediately upon the practice of medicine, the study of which he had previously taken up in Ohio.  Up to the time of his death he attended closely to his professional practice, though in response to the call once made he served as presiding judge of the county court.  Dr. White was three times married; first, to Miss Nancy Blaine, of Ohio, who died in 1852, in this county, leaving two children that are now living:  Archibald and Henry.  After returning from California, whither he had gone in 1850, he married Mrs. Godfrey, and at her death in 1861 she left three children:  Nancy J., wife of Harvey Rathbun; Anna, now Mrs. John F. Aitken [Atkins?]; and Eliza A., who married Sylvester German.  October 4, 1866, the Doctor married the widow of A. G. Hale, a man of prominence in the early settlement of this county.  Dr. White died July 4, 1876, after a residence here of just 36 years.  Henry, one of the two surviving sons by his father's first marriage, was born at Springfield, Sangamon county, Ill., December 11, 1837, and was brought to this county by his parents when very young.  Here he was reared upon a farm.  During the war he served in Hunter's regiment, of the State service, and afterwards was under Parsons, taking part in Shelby's regiment during the last two years of the war.  He was at the battles of Carthage, Wilson's Creek, Cane Hill, Lone Jack (where he was wounded), Marshall (there receiving another wound), and at Mark's Mill, remaining in service until the war was over.  Upon returning home he engaged in farming and has since successfully given his attention to this calling.  October 18, 1865, Mr. White was married to Miss Sarah J. Fry, of this county, daughter of Theophilus and Mary Emily (Beard) Fry, the former of Massachusetts and the latter of Tennessee nativity.  Mr. and Mrs. White have three children:  Jacob Ditzler, Mary H. and Sarah E.
