W. R. Walton

(Stock-raiser, Section 2, Post-office, Fort Scott).

   The subject of this sketch, one of the most enterprising and substantial citizens that ever made his home in Vernon county, was born in Cooper county, Mo., March 15, 1854.  His father, John W. Walton, was a native of Tennessee, and as his occupation in life followed wagon making.  After locating in Missouri he married Miss Eliza Jane Rubey, a native of Cooper county, who bore her husband eight children, five sons and three daughters.  Of these W. R. was the seventh child.  Until 1873, or about his twentieth year, he was reared in the county of his birth, going thence to Bates county, where he remained until coming to this county in 1880.  Since that year he has been located upon his present farm in Richland township, one of the best homesteads in this portion of the county.  His landed estate embraces some 1,200 acres of rich, fertile soil, the improvements of which are unexcelled.  His residence is a model of convenience and beauty and adds no little to the value of his farm.  Its interior arrangements are in full keeping with the outside appearance of the house, and all its surroundings indicate it to be the home of refined, cultivated people.  Without flattery it is but the truth to say that few men, no matter in what community they may be located, have as good ideas as to the proper management of a stock farm as has Mr. Walton.  His entire attention is devoted to stock interests and in this industry his wise, business sagacity and energy have been shown by his success.  One of the largest landholders in the county, he has gained all he now possesses through his own endeavors.  Still a young man, his rise to a position of prominence and esteem has been somewhat unusual, but none the less honorable, and by all he is acknowledged to be worthy of his good fortune.  His estimable wife was formerly Miss Annie Wall, daughter of R. T. Wall, Esq.  Her birth occurred in Johnson county, Mo., and their marriage was consummated March 18, 1884.  In any true history of Vernon county the name of W. R. Walton will always be given an enviable place among the leading citizens of the county, and its self-made, progressive agriculturists and stock men.
