A. Thomas

(Farmer, Section 23, Post-office, Nevada).

   If there is any one in the present day who has reason to feel a just pride in the position which he may occupy, it is certainly is one whose individuals efforts, well directed and vigorously pushed, have established him comfortably in life, and secured for him a substantial and successful competence.  Such a person is Mr. Thomas, who has only to look to for what he now possesses.  On his mother’s side he comes of good old Revolutionary stock, his grandfather Prewitt having done active service in the War for Independence; he was also a substitute in the War of 1812.  His father, William Thomas, a Virginian by birth, was a captain in that war.  His mother’s maiden name was Elizabeth Prewitt, and she, too, was a native of the Old Dominion.  Young Thomas, the fifth of eleven children, was born in Essex county, Va., March 24, 1833, and was there reared to an agricultural experience.  In 1856, he moved to Lee county, Ill., remaining there until his location in Knox county, from whence he came to this county in 1866; his first settlement here was upon the place which he now occupies, and this has continued to be his home, 218 acres comprising its area.  Its improvements are above the average.  Having a natural taste for mechanical work, Mr. Thomas has executed all the carpenter work on his farm, with a skill and neatness plain to be seen.  His industry has been of that unyielding type that knows no such thing as fail, and as a result he is, as above mentioned, well fixed.  February 19, 1861, Miss Sarah Smith became Mr. Thomas’ wife, and to them five children have been given:  Clara V., wife of James Ware; Rhoda A., Salama Hester, Unora Lee and Arthur Glenn.  Mr. Thomas also came formerly from Virginia.  Mr. T. has served as President of the School Board of this district, as township treasurer, school director and road overseer, discharging his duties in these capacities very acceptably.  He belongs to the I.O.O.F.
