THOMAS L. STRONG

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 743

Thomas L. Strong

(Of Strong & Co., Proprietors of Schell City Flouring Mills and Tile Works).

Thomas L. Strong, who has been identified with the business interests of Schell City for the past sixteen years, was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, January 15, 1834. His father, George Strong, was a native of the Emerald Isle, and came with his parents to the United States when five years of age. He was a farmer by occupation and after reaching manhood married Miss Elizabeth Lewis, who was born and reared in Ohio. To them were born ten children, Thomas L. being the youngest son. After his birth the family moved to Schuyler county, Ill., where the father died in 1860. Young Thomas was reared on a farm and followed this occupation until 22 years of age, then commencing his milling experience, to which he has since devoted his time and energies. In 1871 he came to Vernon county, and settled in Schell City, which has since been his home. The mills, now owned and operated by him, were erected in 1871, and are supplied with four run of buhrs, and have a capacity of sixty barrels per day. They do both merchant and custom work and have attained an enviable reputation for their product. In 1862 Mr. Strong was married to Miss Sarah C. Goodrich, a native of Ohio. Four children have been given them: Homer L., Jennie, wife of W. V. Herrick, Harry C. and Albert. In the temperance cause Mr. Strong is an active worker, and is a stanch advocate and a firm believer in its ultimate triumph. He is a member of the A. F. and A. M., and for seven years served the lodge in the capacity of its secretary, and since its organization has not missed a meeting since 1871, unless absent from the city.
