Andrew J. Snider

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 30, Post-office, Bellamy).

   The subject of this sketch is a member of the same family referred to in the biography of him whose life history is briefly mentioned immediately before this.  He is an older brother of Col. Henry Snider, having been born in Monroe county, Ind., November 10, 1828, the third of an original family of 12 children, 10 of whom arrived at maturity.  Elizabeth Snider, née Gray, his mother, was a daughter of James Gray, and she still survives at the ripe old age of 83 years, finding a pleasant home in the family of her youngest son.  Young Andrew grew up to a farm experience and on leaving his native State settled in Ralls county, Mo., where he made his home for some 25 years, or until 1875.  Then he became settled in this county, and since then has closely applied himself to the cultivation of his good farm, which now embraces 204 acres.  During the late war he, too, espoused the cause of the South, entering Porter’s command and going with his regiment through many engagements—that of Oak Ridge, Scotland county, Bott’s Bluff, in Monroe county, Moore’s Mill, in Callaway, where he lost an arm; then in the fight at Newark and also at Palmyra, later in the engagement on the Osage river, and finally he joined Marmaduke’s command and was appointed wagon master.  In this capacity he served until the close of the war.  Following this Mr. Snider returned to Ralls county, but in 1875, as stated, he came to Vernon.  In October, 1851, Miss Rebecca Umsattd [sic], originally from Indiana, became his wife.  They have a worthy family of three children: Clinton M., Eliza A. and Henry M.  Mr. Snider is a member of the M. E. Church South, to the doctrines of which body he earnestly strives to confirm.
