Isaac Sigman

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 23, Post-office, Eldorado Springs).

   Mr. Sigman’s military experience while a soldier during the late war was such as may be referred to with interest at this time, fraught as it was with exciting and dangerous service and narrow escapes from death.  He grew to manhood in Ohio, the State of his birth, and when less than twenty years of age became a member of Co. H, 78^th Ohio volunteer infantry, enlisting October 10, 1861, at Cambridge, O.  This regiment was in Gen. McPherson’s 17^th Army Corps, under Gen. Frank P. Blair.  Mr. Sigman participated in all the battles in which his command took part and received two severe wounds, one in the right leg and the other caused by a bayonet in his right hand and wrist.  On one occasion grape-shot carried away a portion of his blouse collar.  Such a record gained in defense of his country may well be a source of pride to him.  Isaac Sigman was born December 3, 1841, in Guernsey county, O., the fifth of twelve children of William and Margaret Sigman, whose maiden name was Lafollett.  The former was also a native of Ohio, but the latter was a Virginian by birth.  The children besides Isaac were:  Adam, Luke, James, Martha A., Labon, Raleigh, William, Mary, Jane, Joseph and Hosea.  After Mr. Sigman’s discharge from the army, July 11, 1865, he returned to Warren county, Ill., and was there married February 10, 1866, to Miss Catherine Chapman, whose birth occurred in Ohio June 13, 1847.  Upon leaving Illinois a location was chosen in Bates county, Mo., from whence, after a twelve years’ residence, he arrived in Vernon county February 25, 1882, settling where he now makes his home, in section 23.  Here he has 30 acres, and in section 24 is another tract of 67 acres, land kept in good condition.  Politically he is a Republican.  He takes great interest in temperance matters, and is a member of the Good Templars.  Mr. and Mrs. Sigman have the following children:  Louisa P., born January 23, 1867; Arminda D., born June 24, 1868; Loretta E., born December 7, 1869; Stella M., born January 14, 1872; Sherman M., born October 17, 1874; John S., born March 5, 1876; Leonora, born August 23, 1878; Hosea Blain, born March 23, 1880; Hattie S., born May 23, 1883, and Chester McPherson, born February 23, 1885.
