ISAAC C. SICKELS
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 558-559: Isaac C. Sickels (Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 3, Post-office, Schell City). The subject of this sketch is still less than 50 years of age, having been born March 15, 1837, at Indianapolis, Ind. His father was Rev. William Sickels, a native of New York, and for many years a minister in the Presbyterian Church, a truly good man and of sincere piety. After reaching manhood he was united in marriage with Miss Alma C. Coe, a Virginian by birth. Mr. Sickels died in Indiana in 1864, but his wife survived until 1881, when she, too, was called away by death. Isaac C. was the fourth of seven children, four of whom are still living. William and Edward C. are Presbyterian clergymen, and Thomas N. is the editor of the Evening Reporter, at Independence, Kas. Young Isaac was brought up in the city of his birth and was favored with exceptionally fine educational advantages, opportunities which he did not fail to improve. For quite a while he was a student at Miami University, Oxford, O. In 1859 he came to Vernon county, Mo, remained until December, 1861, and then returned to Indiana, from whence he again moved to Missouri in the spring of 1866, settling at Balltown, where he embarked in the real estate business. In 1874 he took up his location at his present place of residence and has since continued to make this his home. His valuable farm embraces 360 acres of well improved land, so managed and conducted as to bring the best possible returns for the labor expended; and as everyone knows who is acquainted with Mr. Sickles, he thoroughly understands every detail of his business, carrying it on according to advanced ideas. August 13, 1860, he was married to Miss Mary W. McNeil, eldest daughter of R. W. McNeil, one of the oldest settlers in Vernon county, and frequently referred to within this volume, as a man well and favorably known. Mr. Sickels is a Republican in his political faith, and has done valuable work for his party in this community. He is well posted on the current events of the day and is advanced and liberal in his all views. [Transcribed by Marty Patton] |
