JOSEPH J. SHRUM

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 741-742:

Joseph J. Shrum

(Farmer, Section 32, Post-office Schell City).

A resident of this county since 1872, Mr. Shrum has during this time been actively engaged in farming, and not without substantial evidences of success, as may be seen in his well improved homestead of 260 acres. This is kept in good condition and is carried on in a manner which shows good management and thorough acquaintance with the details of farming. Mr. Shrum was born in Moniteau county, Mo., July 7, 1844, the second of four children in the family of his parents, Josiah and Elizabeth (Houck) Shrum. The former, a native of Pennsylvania, was a farmer by occupation, and when Joseph was 10 years old moved with his family to Benton county, Mo. There our subject grew to manhood, making it his home until 1872, when, as intimated, he became a citizen of Vernon county, and since then his home has been in this locality, where he is now favorably known. In 1865 he united in marriage with Miss Martha Solomon, who was born in Cooper county, Mo. Five children have blessed their union: William E., Alice N., Tommie E., Arthur G. and Myrtie M. Mr. and Mrs. Shrum are members of the Baptist Church in Blue Mound.
