Elbert D. Seamans

(Druggist and Dealer in Druggists' Sundries, etc., Walker).

   E. D. Seamans, one of Walker's most prominent business men, and a man whose influence has been felt in every worthy movement, tending to the advancement of the place, owes his nativity to Sauk county, Wis., where he was born December 8, 1856, the only son born to his parents, Ezra G. and Elvira (Dean) Seamans, originally from the Empire State; the Seamans were early settlers in Western New York, and the Deans in its Central portion.  About 1855 Ezra Seamans and wife moved to Sauk county, Wis., residing on a farm for several years, and in 1861 he enlisted in a Wisconsin regiment of infantry.  During his term of service he died, and within six months after his wife also died, leaving two children besides Elbert, Fannie and Elsie, all of whom were now taken to live among strangers.  Elbert found a home with a Mr. Ira Wright, of Onodaga, N.Y., and remained with him some 10 years, working on a farm and attending school.  For the next two years he clerked in a hardware store at Batavia, N.Y., and subsequently for four years he was employed in a drug and hardware establishment; upon coming thence to St. Clair county, Mo., he purchased some cattle, which he grazed, and in 1879 Walker became his place of abode, where for a year he was engaged in the stock business.  He then embarked in the drug trade and has since continued it, and besides this he has handled with success hardware and agricultural implements.  He has built here and aided in the erection of these business houses, the last being a two-story brick, and at this time he owns three dwellings, his home property especially being worthy of mention.  Mr. Seamans deserves great credit for his career during life, his present substantial position having been secured entirely through his own efforts.  He has been honorable and liberal in all things, as many can testify.  Though Republican in politics he has never been an office seeker, but for three years he was postmaster of this place.  October 2, 1881, Mr. Seamans was married to Miss Laura B. Cox, who was born in Findlay, O., December 27, 1863.  They have two children.  Mr. S.'s store contains a full line of drugs usually found in a drug establishment and he is having a good trade.  He belongs to the A.O.U.W. and Masonic orders.
