JAMES W. B. SCOTT
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 477-478: James W. B. Scott (Farmer and Stock-raiser, Post-office, Harwood). Mr. Scott comes of substantial Pennsylvania stock, his father, James M. Scott, having been born in Adams county, of the Keystone State; there he lived, married and died, Miss Rachel Linah having become his wife in 1833. She was of Irish descent and bore six children: Abram L., born in 1834; William J., born in 1836; James W. B., born in 1838; Annie E., born in 1840; Jane M., born in 1842; and Samuel F., born in 1844. James W. B., the subject of this sketch also owes his nativity to Adams county, Pa, his natal day having been March 27, 1838. He was both reared and educated there and continued to make it his home until the spring of 1857, when, going to Boone county, Mo., where his father had settled, he located at Claysville. Shortly after this, Mr. Scott left for Ashland, and while there he married Miss Phelix Patton, September 29, 1870, the daughter of Jesse Lee and Nancy E. Patton, nee Russell. The former was born in what is now Warren (then St. Clair) county, Mo., July 2, 1821, his wife’s birth occurring in Boone county, November 16, 1823. Of their eleven children, Mrs. Scott was the seventh child. The Patton family are remarked for their longevity and the advanced ages which many of them reach; they have voted the Democratic ticket from the first President down. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Scott are as follows: Laura A., James D., A. J., Mary L. and Nannie L. In 1871 Mr. S. moved to Howard county and was identified with the interests of that community until March, 1880, when he came to this county, and soon after his arrival he purchased the place which he now occupies. This is most pleasantly situated and the many and varied improvements which are constantly being added indicate without doubt the abode of an enterprising, energetic agriculturist, and such Mr. Scott has proven himself to be. Already the community in which he lives has felt the influence of his public-spiritedness, though whatever he does is done in a quiet, unassuming way. His political preferences are Democratic.
