E. G. Scott

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 3, Post-office, Schell City).

   The subject of this sketch, a native of Springfield, Ill., was born August 19, 1840, and therefore is little past the age of 46 years.  His father, Enos Scott, originally from England, born June 25, 1813, was married after coming to America on May 29, 1838, to Miss Ann Garrison, whose birth occurred at Newark, N. J., February 29, 1820.  In 1840 this young married couple located at Springfield, Ill., but a year later returned to Newark and remained some five years.  Going thence to Cincinnati, O., they made their home there for six years, and finally became settled at Jacksonville, Ill., ten miles from which place the father now resides upon a farm.  The children in their family besides E. G. (who was the second one) were George, born March 27, 1839; Sylvanus, born September 11, 1842; Ann L., born December 18, 1844; Rosa, born May 11, 1846; Ira, born May 16, 1850; Jonas, born September 24, 1852; Caleb, born January 29, 1854; Evaline, born June 25, 1856, and Horton E., born December 26, 1857.  On the day he was 21 years old E. G. Scott enlisted at Jacksonville in the 1^st Missouri cavalry, took part in all the battles of the war participated in by this regiment and was mustered out at St. Louis September 1, 1864, after three years of hard service.  Mr. Scott now returned to Jacksonville, but in a short time moved to DeWitt, Clinton county, where he was married January 28, 1869, to Miss Jane Back, of that place (born February 8, 1852), the daughter of A. J. and Margaret (Brown) Back, whose union was consummated in 1846.  The former was a native of Indiana and the latter of Kentucky.  After his marriage Mr. Scott continued to farm near Clinton until February, 1879, when he located in this county, settling where he now resides.  His beautiful place includes 160 acres of well improved land, upon which are a good house and orchard, besides neat and necessary outbuildings.  The children born to himself and wife are Ira, born November 29, 1869; Emma Laura, born April 12, 1871; Harvey Winfield Scott, born September 8, 1872; Louis Ensign, born December 11, 1874; Isadora, born January 5, 1878, and Raymond Allen and Roland Everett, twins, born February 6, 1884.  Mr. Scott votes the Democratic ticket.  He and his wife and daughter are members of the Christian Church, in the affairs of which they take warm interest; as a family they are among the respected people of this part of the county.
