JAMES W. RUSSELL
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 687-688: James W. Russell (Dealer in Groceries, Provisions, Etc., Nevada). For some 13 years Mr. Russell has had a mercantile experience in both Pennsylvania and Missouri -- a sufficient time to render him perfectly competent to successfully carry on the establishment which he now conducts. His grocery store is well stocked with a general line of groceries, provisions, etc., full and complete, and embracing all that is to be desired, and by his upright and liberal dealing, a good patronage has been accorded him. Mr. Russell was born in Mercer county, Penn., August 11, 1852, the son of John and Julia (Burns) Russell, also natives of the Keystone State. James W. was the eldest of their 10 children, and as he grew up in the vicinity of his birthplace his time was spent principally upon his father's farm until about 20 years of age. Then he entered upon a clerical experience in a mercantile house, finally moved to Barton county, Mo., in 1880, remained there until March, 1883, at first engaging in the stock business for two years, and then came to Nevada, starting his present store. October 3, 1882, Mr. Russell married Miss Nancy M. Pool, a daughter of W. W. Pool. She was also born in Mercer county, Penn. [Transcribed by Marty Patton] |
