WILLIAM and ADAM ROTH

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 575-576:

William Roth and Brother

(Farmers and Stock-raiser, Section 26, Post-office, Deerfield).

Coal township probably has more large stock feeders, in proportion to population, than any other township in the county, and prominent among them are those whose names head this sketch.  William Roth and brother, two of the leading stock men of this portion of the State.  George Roth, the farmer, born in 1815, was a native of Germany, and emigrated to the United States in 1833, settling in Pennsylvania, where he gave his attention to farming; the maiden name of his wife was Charlotte Weaver, and she was also of German origin.  Ten children were in the family; five of whom accompanied the parents to Missouri.  Of these William was born in Clearfield county, Pa., May 6, 1856.  As he grew up he became acquainted with the details of agricultural life and the stock business, and therefore brings to his present calling a knowledge gained by life long experience in it.  About the year 1866 he came with the family to this county and has since made his home here, his attention having been devoted actively and successfully to farming and stockraising.  December 28, 1879, he was united in marriage with Miss Alice Border, who was born in Lake county, Ind., February 12, 1862, the daughter of George and Roanna Border.  Ten children were in her parents' family, and of these she was the fifth; they located in Vernon county in 1870.  Mr. and Mrs. Roth have three children; Charles, Albert and Goldma.

Adam Roth, the brother referred to, was also born in Pennsylvania, March 9, 1861, and like the other boys in the family was reared as a farmer and stock-raiser.  With the exception of some two or three years spent in the West he has principally remained here, attending to his chosen duties, and for two years past he has been associated with William Roth in conducting their large stock interests.  It should have been mentioned before that George Roth, the father of these two young men, died in this county September 5, 1878.  Their mother died April 7, 1866.

As has already been said the Roth brothers are recognized as among the extensive feeders of stock in this community.  Their farm of 840 acres is well adapted to the successful carrying on of the business, improved with substantial and convenient buildings an nicely arranged.  Their hogs especially are worthy of more than passing notice, and at fairs in which these animal have been exhibited nine first premiums and three sweepstakes have been awarded them.
