Johiel H. Rinehart

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 28, Post-office, Rinehart).

   Among those mentioned in this History of Vernon County, who now occupy positions of substantial worth but have come up in the world without friends or fortune to aid them in their every-day strife, Mr. Rinehart is by no means unworthy of notice.  Twenty years ago when he came to Missouri his worldly possessions aggregated perhaps $500; to-day he is well situated, owning large landed property, and the influence which he exerts throughout the community proclaims him a man above the ordinary.  Mr. Rinehart was born November 6, 1836, in Greene county, Pa., one of seven children in the family of his parents, Stephen and Lydia Rinehart.  The former was also born in Greene county, in 1795, and after his death, in 1846, his widow was again married in 1850 to James McFeely, by whom she had four children.  In 1847, Johiel accompanied his mother and her family to Illinois, where he continued to live, engaged in farming and attending the common schools until reaching his majority.  When about 22 years of age he was married in 1858 to Miss Lois Patterson, of Bureau county, Ill., whose birth occurred September 20, 1841.  She is the daughter of Robert Patterson and Rosina, née McIntyre, the former born in 1796 and the latter in 1807.  Her paternal grandfather was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.  In 1866 Mr. Rinehart left Illinois and came to Missouri, settling where he now resides and purchasing 80 acres of land, upon which he built a house; this was destroyed four years after by fire.  The country was then sparsely settled compared to its present population, and he has witnessed many changes, as new-comers located here.  His present landed estate embraces 690 acres of valuable land, well watered and excellently adapted for stock purposes, an industry to which he devotes some attention.  In 1883 he embarked in the mercantile business at Nevada and moved his family there, but owing to failing health he returned to his farm the next year, carrying on merchandising on a small scale at this place; however he has withdrawn from mercantile life and devotes himself entirely to his agricultural interests.  He takes great interest in everything he does and strives hard to prove himself worthy of the success which has crowned his efforts.  Mr. and Mrs. Rinehart have five children, whose names and dates of birth are:  Madison, October 26, 1859; William H., November 15, 1861; Stephen, January 30, 1864; Rosa, January 11, 1869; and Jay, May 17, 1871.  He and his wife are members of the Christian Church, in which he has been an elder since the church organization.  Mr. Rinehart's mother and her husband are now living upon his farm, respected by all who know them.
