R. Pierce

(Montevallo).

   Besides the milling interests of Mr. Pierce—one of the important factors in the business affairs of Montevallo—he is, as is well known, one of the township’s prominent and successful stock men, having during the past season given his attention quite extensively to the feeding of cattle—some 200 head—and a large number of hogs. His mill is an excellent one, fitted with machinery calculated to turn out only the best product, and is supplied with three run of buhrs. It does both custom and merchant work. Previous to engaging in the business Mr. Pierce was occupied in farming, a calling to which he was brought up, and one in which his efforts were attended with substantial evidences of success. Like results have also followed him in later years. Originally from Armstrong county, Pa., he was born January 3, 1825, the son of Peter and Martha (Veasey) Pierce, who were parents of the following children besides Robison: John, Joseph, Lavina, Peggy, David, Johnston and Alexander. The father was a native of Maryland, but was reared in Pennsylvania, in which State the mother was born. Robison passed his youthful days in becoming familiar with the duties of an agriculturist. Living in his native State until 1838, he then went to Ohio, where his home continued to be until his removal to Stephenson county, Ill., in 1840. From that locality he came to this county in 1868, having before this been occupied in both farming and the dairy business. From 1864 until 1866 he was engaged in mining in Idaho, but on returning to Illinois his attention was again directed to tilling the soil. In 1881 Mr. Pierce discontinued agricultural labor to embark in milling, and this he has since followed, with his other interests as stated. In 1845 he married Miss Caroline Hathaway, of Pennsylvania, and to them seven children have been given: Catharine, wife of Stewart Greer; John, who married Herme Keithley; Thomas, who married Addie Pope; Martha, wife of N. B. Henthorn; Zach, William and Lucy. Mr. P. belongs to the Masonic fraternity.
