JOHN PHIPPS
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 836-837: John Phipps (Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 25, Post-office, Sheldon). For eighteen years Mr. Phipps has been a resident of Vernon county and one of her successful agriculturists, contributing by his industry and intelligence to its growth and development, and to its general advancement. Formerly he was a well-known and popular citizen of Cole county, Ill., where he was born and reared, his principal occupation while there being that of farming and stock raising. This occupation has received his attention during most of his life, he having grown up to that experience. Thomas Phipps, his father, was a native of Ohio, and an agriculturist by occupation. He died in Illinois in 1880, leaving besides his widow, who was formerly Miss Eva Harter, also of Ohio nativity, eight children to mourn his loss, seven sons and one daughter. In 1869 Mr. John Phipps became located in Vernon county, and here now owns an excellent farm of 200 acres, well improved, the buildings of which deserve special mention; and he also has 100 acres sown in tame grass. Success of a high order has attended his operations, his substantial competence, however, having been gained only by industry, economy and good management, and he certainly deserves his good fortune. In 1872 Mr. P. was married to Miss Judith Longacre, originally from Cooper county, Mo., and to them six children have been given: Minnie, Thomas, Henry, Sallie, Bennie and John.
