MELVILLE C. PATTERSON

Melville C. Patterson

(Florist and Fruit Raiser, Nevada).

   Unlike, perhaps, any other person whose name appears in the present volume, Mr. Patterson is a native of the Indian Territory. At the time of his birth, February 26, 1844, his father, Samuel G. Patterson, and mother, Elizabeth E. (Paxton) Patterson, were residents of the Territory, where the former, who was a minister of the M. E. Church, was located as Indian agent. He (the father) came originally from Massachusetts, but his wife was born in Montgomery county, Mo. A family of sixteen children blessed their happy married life, of which number Meville [sic] C. was the fifth child. His early life was not a settled one for he grew up partly in Southwest Missouri and also in Montana and Colorado, applying himself at different and varied occupations until coming to Nevada in 1884. Since that time he has commenced an enterprise that cannot fail of proving profitable, as well as convenient, for the citizens of this place. Just inside of the city limits he has 20 acres of land, upon which has been built a commodious green house, and here he devotes his attention to the raising of flowers, plants, etc., besides raising small fruits. To the experience already had in the business Mr. Patterson brings an intelligent, practical application of labor, and thus early finds that he is well fitted for such a calling. A visit to his place at any time is well worth the time of every one. In 1873 Miss Mary Cook became his wife. She was born in Montgomery county, Mo. Two children now constitute their family, Harry Hardin and Fred Pearson. Two died in infancy. Mr. P. is a Knight Templar in the Masonic Order.
