JOHN M. OVERSTREET
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 741: John M. Overstreet (Of the Overstreet & Sluder Drug Co., Schell City). One of the most important of the business interests of this place is the establishment with which Mr. Overstreet is connected, and, indeed, it is unsurpassed by any like house in this portion of the State. The company is composed of R. S. Overstreet, W. G. Sluder and J. M. Overstreet, all men of extensive experience in the profession, the last named being in sole charge of the store here. They also do a large business in St. Louis, where they have another house. In 1880 this firm commenced at Schell City and have since had remarkable success, enjoying a trade of large proportions. Its prosperity is due largely to the efforts of Mr. Overstreet, the subject of this sketch, who has been untiring in this endeavors to carry on an establishment of which the county might well be proud. The store building is the most complete for the business in the county and is not surpassed by any in Southwest Missouri. The goods handled are all standard and of the best quality, and in the compounding and filling of prescriptions Mr. O. has the unlimited confidence of the medical profession and their patrons. He is only a little past the age of 25 years, having been born in Mercer county, Ky., December 7, 1861, the youngest of six children born of the marriage of his parents, Robert J. and Mary (Frost) Overstreet, both Kentuckians by nativity. The former was a farmer by occupation and young John continued to live on the home farm until 14 years of age, when he began learning the drug business in Lexington county. Since that time he has had practical experience in the calling, having followed it continually, and this has given him a thorough knowledge of the profession in all its details. March 10, 1886, Mr. Overstreet was married to Miss Cina Corkins, of Adams county, Ill.
