DAVID NIXON
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 677: David Nixon (Carriage and Wagon Manufacturer, Nevada). Since 1869 Mr. Nixon has been identified with the business interests of Nevada, and Vernon county has had no more worthy citizen than he. Born in Tyrone county, North of Ireland, June 17, 1832, he was of Scotch ancestry, his parents being Alexander and Isabella Nixon; the latter though of same name was no relation. When 11 years old young David came to the United States, settling in St. Joseph county, Michigan, his father having previously died. He remained in Michigan until 18 years of age and then removed to DeKalb county, Ill., where he lived until 1869. He had learned the cabinet-maker's trade in youth, and afterwards worked at carpentering. In 1869 he came to Vernon county, Mo., and for three years was engaged in contracting and building, but for the past thirteen years he has carried on his present business, in which he has been successful, having won an enviable reputation for the quality of his manufactures. In all things tending to advance the interest of the city he is active and progressive, and on moral questions is always found on the side of right. Mr. Nixon married Miss Cordelia Hummiston in October, 1856. She is a native of New York. Their three children are named Frank B., Effie A., wife of A. B. Davis; and Willie A. Mr. and Mrs. N. are members of the M. E. Church South. [Transcribed by Marty Patton] |
