COLUMBUS J. MOORE
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 836: Columbus J. Moore (Farmer, Section 2, Post-office, Milo). The subject of this sketch, only a little past the age of fifty years, now actively occupied in agricultural affairs in this township, owes his nativity to Henry county, Va., where his birth occurred February 24, 1837. Like so many other men in the county he came also of Virginia parentage, both his father, Thomas Moore, and mother, formerly Frances Wray, having been natives of the Old Dominion, the latter of Henry county. A large and interesting family of children were born to them, eight of whom grew to maturity, and of these Columbus J. was the fourth. When but four years old he accompanied his parents to St. Charles county, Mo., where he was principally reared, to an agricultural experience, later moving to Lafayette county, Mo., in 1869, where with but one exception he made his home for nine years. For ten months of this time (the exception referred to) he was a resident of Linn county, this State. Since 1878 Mr. Moore has lived in Vernon county, where he is now occupied in the conduct of his farm of 160 acres. This is in good cultivation and so managed as to secure excellent results for the labor expended. The improvements are of a good class also, and such as are necessary to the proper conduct of a farm. November 14, 1861, Mr. Moore was married to Miss Maria L. Carter, whose birth occurred April 21, 1841, in St. Charles county, Mo. She was brought up, however, in Warren county. Her father, Cyrus Carter, was a native of Connecticut, and her mother, Harriet (Moore) Carter, of Kentucky. Mr. and Mrs. Moore have seven children; Romeo P., William P., Hattie D., Edward E., Mary M., Anna L. and Cyrus T. Two are deceased. Mr. N. [M] is a member of the Anti-Horse Thief Association.
