J. G. McMATH
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 526: J. G. McMath (Dealer in General Merchandise, Ellis). The subject of this sketch, well known in this community, was born in Coshocton county, O., September 13, 1849, and, as may be inferred from the name, comes of Scotch ancestry. James McMath, his father, was a native of Scotland, but emigrated to the United States when some eighteen years of age, here devoting himself to the mercantile business. His (James') wife was before her marriage a Miss Almira Lawrence, of Vermont birth. Six children were in their family, and of these J. G. was the youngest. He was brought up in Ohio, and from early youth followed merchandising, becoming familiar with this trade in many of its different branches. In 1870 he left the Buckeye State and came to Missouri, and for ten years after this was occupied in running on the Chicago and Alton Railroad as conductor. In 1883 he chose a settlement in this county, and before long his wisdom in making this choice was seen, for the farm for which he paid $13.10 per acre yielded him within one year $27.50 per acre. In April, 1884, he opened his present establishment at Ellis, and from that time to the present has had no reason to regret having embarked in this enterprise. His stock is a well selected one, suited to the demands of his trade, and the custom which he receives is a satisfactory one. October 8, 1879, Mr. McMath married Miss Louise Eddins, of Glasgow, Howard county, Mo. One child has been given them, William Eddins. Mrs. McMath is now filling the position of postmistress at Ellis, having received the appointment as such February 26, 1886. It is safe to say that no more thorough or painstaking official could have been chosen for this position, and the interests of those whom she serves are faithfully guarded. |
