NEWTON McCULLOUGH

Newton McCullough

(Farmer, Section 35, Post-office, Deerfield).

   In mentioning within these pages the McCullough family as early settlers of this county, reference should be made very properly to the father of the subject of this sketch, Joseph McCullough, whose residence within the community dates from the year 1854.  Though he is not now living there are many who remember him well.  He was born and brought up in East Tennessee, his birth occurring in 1808.  Some time after his marriage to Miss Rebecca Hale, he moved with his family to Callaway county, Mo., in 1836, living there for seven years, or until settling in Cole county.  There he made his home up to the time of choosing a location in Vernon county in 1854.  His principal occupation was that of a farmer, though in early life he had learned the trade of cabinet making.  After the war closed he decided to go to Texas, but a brief residence there failed to satisfy him and he moved to Benton county, Ark., where his death finally occurred.  His first wife died in 1859, leaving a family, of whom three children still survive:  Newton, Marion and Martha, who married William Smith.  Mr. McCullough was subsequently married a second time, and by this union also had three children.  Newton, the eldest son now living by his father's first marriage, and an agriculturist of established experience and success, was born in Tennessee, February 3, 1835, buy by adoption he is a thorough Missourian.  During the year above mentioned he came to this State with the family and settled in Callaway county, afterwards living in Cole county previous to locating here in September, 1854.  A residence of over 30 years in this locality has resulted in making him widely and favorable known.  Farming has been his life work, and he now owns a good farm of 120 acres.  November 15, 1865, Mr. McCullough was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Godfrey, daughter of Lemuel C. Godfrey.  She died in February, 1885 leaving two children living, Arthur and Richard.  Four others are deceased.
