JASPER McCRARY

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 475-476:

Jasper McCrary

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 10, Post-office, Schell City).

Mr. McCrary has an excellently improved farm of 260 acres, and it is managed in a manner which at once stamps him the successful and prominent agriculturist that he is.  Upon his place he raises all kinds of stock and gives considerable attention to this industry.  Jasper McCrary comes of good old Tennessee stock, his father, Gilead McCrary, having been born in the eastern part of that State in 1810, and in 1823 he accompanied his father to Howard county, Mo.  In 1837 he (Gilead) was united in marriage with Miss Fannie Hackley, a Virginian by birth, born in 1819.  Their children were William B., born in 1839; John C., born in 1841; Mary E., born in 1843; Sterling P., born in 1848, and Jasper.  Mrs. McCrary died in 1850, and in 1854 her husband was again married, Miss Cynthia Sears becoming his wife.  Their two children were Benjamin F., born in 1857, and Annie Laurie, born in 1861.  Mr. McCrary on leaving Howard moved to Randolph county, where his remaining days were passed.  The subject of this sketch received his education in the latter named vicinity, and up to the time of his entering the army was actively engaged in farming.  During Price’s last raid through Missouri he joined that general’s forces in October, 1864, serving in several skirmishes, etc., until the surrender at Shreveport, June 5, 1865.  Returning home Mr. McCrary resumed his former operations, and remained there until coming to this county in October, 1869, and this has since been his abiding place.  His worthy wife was formerly Miss Martha Keeny, whom he married February 1, 1872.  She was the daughter of O. H. P. Keeny and wife, formerly Mary Laughlin, and was born in Osage county, Mo., February 8, 1856.  Mr. and Mrs. McCrary have the following children, whose natal days are as indicated:  Ira B., February 2, 1873; Lillie Belle, September 25, 1875; Mary E., November 9, 1877; Perry B., March 24, 1880; Nellie M., October 15, 1881; Willie C., June 1, 1883, and Amy Lee, October 15, 1884.  In politics Mr. McC. is a Democrat.  Both he and his wife are member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, and he also belongs to Vernon Lodge No. 99, A. O. U. W., at Schell City.
