John T. Lancaster

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 20, Post-office, Goodrick).

   The family of which the subject of this sketch is a representative is so well known in Vernon county that an outline at least of some of its members is almost necessary.  The parents of John were James and Lucinda (Washburn) Lancaster, both natives of Tennessee, the former born in 1816; their marriage occurred in 1839, three years after which time Mr. L. moved with his family to Bates county, Mo., though in two years he had returned to Smith county, Tenn.  In the spring of 1859 he started for Vernon county, Mo., but upon reaching Bates county found it impossible to cross the river (the ferry boat having sunk) and consequently was compelled to go into winter quarters.  The following spring he proceeded to his place of destination and soon located on section 19-35-29, where before long he had a most desirable home.  In the family of himself and wife were the following children:  Fannie E., born in 1844; John T., born November 5, 1846; Robert F., born January 15, 1849; Samuel A., born March 26, 1851; S. Tillie, born September 7, 1853; James Lewis, born October 7, 1858; Eugenia N., born August 23, 1861; Herschel W., born March 1, 1863; and Mary Lee, born March 5, 1865.  Mr. Lancaster is a man of irreproachable character, moral and upright in all his dealings and highly esteemed.  Formerly a Whig, he is now a Democrat.  His worthy wife has been a member of the Baptist Church for 35 years.  John T. Lancaster, whose name heads this biography, came originally from Smith county, Tenn., the date of his birth being, as stated, November 5, 1846.  January 15, 1871, he was married in this county to Miss Julia S. Mobley, who was born August 21, 1851, in Hickman county, Ky., having accompanied her parents to Vernon county in 1857.  After his marriage, Mr. L. soon entered actively upon his career as an agriculturalist, his farm being located on section 28-36-29, but this he disposed of in 1884 and then purchased the place he now owns and occupies in section 20.  This is desirably situated and embraces 260 acres, the surroundings and improvements of which are destined to be among the most elaborate in this section of the county.  Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster have five children:  Charles A., born February 26, 1875; Elmar R., born February 16, 1877; Mary L., born August 8, 1879; R. Raymond, born February 16, 1881; and Oral, born December 15, 1885.  Politically Mr. L. is a Democrat.  He is a member of the Baptist Church and for over sixteen years his wife has belonged to the M. E. Church South.  Their family have been remarkably well preserved in health and since 1859 their physicians’ bills have not exceeded $20, and during their residence in the State not a death in the family has occurred.
